Restore? - Motorola Atrix HD

If I restore my phone with root will it brick? What if I unroot it? I'm trying to get a clean ics so I can update to the JB leak because I deleted apps and for some reason they won't install

[Q] Do I need to unroot for any stock updates?

So, when I got my first Captivate, I got into my epic Android zone with all the ROMs and all that good stuff and managed to mess all that up royally. Well I got my new one and made myself keep it at stock 2.2, but rooted (in case any cool apps came about needing root and CWM wouldn't flash correctly, got a bunch of E: errors so I am assuming that I don't have CWM installed anywhere). So, with this in mind, whenever (or should I say if they ever) they push the OTA update for gingerbread or allow non market apps (preferably both) do I need to be unrooted (meaning will they shut off my device once root is detected on from the OTA or will it just not be pushed because I'm rooted) or will it just push over my current ROM, possible recovery?, etc.?
EDIT: So, does the unroot function of superoneclick work or no?
Anyone care to touch this?
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for another stock update, just my two cents.
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.
When I had my rooted D1 I tried the OTA to see what would happen. I received in error saying that it did not work. I don't think it will work with a rooted phone????

If you are rooted the OTA will fail, but then OTA from Att always fails. OTA updates are not safe to begin with but that is just my 2 cents

To be honest I am not sure. As I only run stock long enough to,find the info to get a custom rom. If I remember right it wipes the device kinda like Odin when flashing so you may be ok.
The first update that came out for captivate, I was rooted and it worked. Worked for many others. Then the update to 2.2 came out and those who were stock rooted lost root. Its just best to be stock with update. Those that had failed updates, the majority used dg's odin package to go back to stock. That's what I remember in the "let's figure this out" thread.

Does the unroot function from Superoneclick work? Or is there an unroot thing through adb because odin doesn't work with my computer
Use heimdall stock package. No problems that I know of.

Easiest way to get back to stock rom Z7?

Do I just download the Z7 .tot file to the SD and flash as a normal rom?
No. Read my forum in development. There's inscructions in how to flash the tot

Got it. I downloaded Z7 stock rom and then was gunna allow the update to install automatically, I guess I should have downloaded the Z8 rom to save some time?
oh well..
Alright, made it back to Z7 and did the OTA update to Z8..
now how do I root and get CWM again?? That ALLINONE executer does not work.

Attention read before flashing official ota!!

keep in mind before anyone updates to the official jb. i suspect the official release will be patched to not allow us to return to ics. if you keep root after the update good but if you some how break root there might no be a way to get it back as of now! so be cautious before you accept update. we should at least wait for an official jb fxz if you plan on keepng root this way if you mess something up at least you will have a working phone back without root of course. again i dont know they will patch the official release to prevent downgrade but lets find out for sure to be on the safe side. i dont think were gonna get dan to make us a jb root method right away soon.....
It could be considering its small size. Those who have updated to JB OTA should install safestrap and make a backup.

This exactly what that was, I am no longer able to downgrade to 4.0.4 using the Atrix Utility. No biggie for me though, I'm rooted with SS3, and I have backups!

That's not the official one... A leak update for a leak update is not the official OTA. The official package (if for some reason it is 98.4.20) will be the size of at least the 2 leak update.zips together. It is not a 10 MB change from ICS to JB. It's a 10 MB change from JB leak to JB leak.

Hello friends!
I've got AT&T Atrix HD with JB leak installed, with uncomplete root (root is present but any app cannot access root!), and yesterday I've received software update (98.4.20.en.US).
Tell me please - can I flash back to ICS, or somehow in another way gain root access??

I can confirm that this OTA does block you from going back too ICS. Lucky for me, I have backups, and i kept root, so I can go back by restoring one of my backups. But I think this leak OTA is pretty good, so I'm not to upset.

I second PeteSeiler2010's confirmation. I installed this update and tried going back to ICS with both RSD Lite and the Atrix utility.Neither worked. Luckily though, I too had made a backup with SS3 and was able to revert back and get root again.

Unfortunately, I do not have any ICS backups for my phone, I must have named a JB backup as and ICS thats all I can think of...anyway, I too and hoping someone can upload an ICS backup somewhere so I too have the ability to go back to ICS if need be. Sorry for the false hope!
If any one has a backup off ICS, I would be happy to upload it my dropbox site so we all would have that to fall back on.

Just to clarify for Pete.
We don't want your information stored on your phone.
1) Restore back to ICS using the "restore function" in SS3/TWRP
2) Do a Factory Data Reset in settings.... privacy..... Factory Data Reset (this will wipe all personal info from the phone).
3) After you've done a Factory Data Reset, do a backup in SS3/TWRP.
4) Zip up the folder that has the backup you just performed, and upload it to a file server somewhere.
5) Post the link in this thread.
6) Be a Hero!

How to get back to stock from JB OTA?

After doing the OTA while on the leaked JB, how would I get back to a stock unrooted look? I read somewhere a factory reset removed root, but left the superuser app and unable to be uninstalled.

A factory reset will not remove root.
Not sure what you're asking, nor why you would ask it, but if you're asking to go back to stock ics, there's no way possible at the moment.

Before updating to jb read the forums. We have no actual jb root so you have to preserve your root during the update.

Yes and No.
Yes, if he flashes JB, he'll be stuck as flashing back will brick your device. Root or No Root that will happen.
No, If he backs up root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper method me and several other people used to keep root, he could still have root on JB.

Are you using a laptop by chance? My laptop wouldnt recognize mine. I had to use a desktop to flash via RSD.
Also, having root won't keep you from updating. I backed up with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and flashed the update just fine. Then I restored root on JB. The deleted apps are the only thing stopping the update.

Someone with root that has first hand experience needs to help you. Whatever you do don't update. Root is more important than jelly bean IMO. Jb has some annoying bugs. The keyboard issue is the worst.

can i still flash the batakang rom with it running on ics...and is that the only custom rom out for the ahd right now
Just follow the directions carefully after the utility to retain root then update to jb via the unofficial zip then you can do batakang
Sent from my JokerATRIX HD MAXX
just wanted to thank everyone for helping out, i now have a rooted ahd running on jb....now onto the batakang rom!!!!!
safestrap it, make a slot1, then flash the stock JB411 rooted rom found on this board.
make a backup
then restore that backup to the stock slot.
problem solved, still rooted.
He already got it covered man.
