I had a Sony Xperia S (abbr. XS) before I bought a Nexus 4 (abbr. N4). And luckily I wasn't stuck in limbo lvl 3 for too long and got my phone on Monday morning.
Let's talk about the reported N4 issues here:
1. Buzz from earphone speaker
People reported the same for XS. And then we found out it's because of the noise-cancelling microphone. For my N4 I can't hear this mysterious buzz, and I believe my ears are much better than the average.
2. "Unreasonably" hot device
Definitely warmer than XS. But then XS is all plastic and N4 is mostly glass. Glass is a better heat conductor than plastic so this means N4 dissipates heat better than XS.
3. Poor battery performance
MUCH MUCH BETTER battery than XS. Now I can go through the day with 30~40% left. With XS, it would've been 10%.
4. poor touchscreen sensitivity
Touchscreen is definitely more sensitive than XS. And I feel it behaves differently from XS.
5. Feedback when plugged in.
Never know this so cannot comment.
Now my general impressions:
The build quality is definitely up from XS. I'm not saying XS has lousy quality but N4 feels more "substantially" in your hand. Two glass panels are slippery for sure. Took me sometime to adjust how to hold the N4. My device arrived in perfect condition: no scratched LCD, no cracked back, no cracked bezel.
Sound quality is a little bit worse than XS. Sony has an upper hand here because the Sony Walkman player is better than Google Music.
LCD screen is definitely not as good as XS. Colors look pale when compared to XS's LED-backlit LCD (343ppi). But it is still a VERY NICE LCD. I am NOT an AMOLED fan and NEVER WILL BE. So hold your comment.
On-screen buttons: mixed feeling. It is much more sensitive than XS hardware touch buttons but it takes away screen space. I prefer hardware touch buttons so I can have my resolution back.
I am not going to comment on Android 4.2 because it is VASTLY SUPERIOR than ICS.
Feel free to ask questions you need my clarification or if I missed something.
Great phone must buy!
Hi, I sold my Xperia S to get a Nexus 4 (still waiting for my order!). The one thing that bugged me about the XS was the poor viewing angles of the display, so how does the N4 compare? Do colours distort badly like they do on the XS? Thanks!

Well, I believe that Nexus 4 better than Xperia S when viewing angles because it uses IPS panel

Color distortion is there, but it's subtle at slightly off angles then start to see blue or yellow tints depending on the angle you look from. Doesn't tint any where near as much as my galaxy s 2 did, or xperia play. Text is visible on white backgrounds at ANY angle it's great having the LCD fused with the glass, helps so much.

Thanks for the question!
The viewing angle of Nexus 4 is definitely better than XS. But the readability under the sun is slightly worse than XS. Everything is a trade-off it seems.
Hope that helps!

Was about to comment on that.
Since both phones uses Sony sensor I don't see there's any major differences. The noise pattern is similar, the high ISO capability is similar, and the camera speed is similar. Xperia S produces some punchier color and contrast, Nexus 4 produces some more flatter image. Both has their pros and cons.
What's better with Nexus 4 is the HDR mode, which is lacking in Xperia S. Also, the focusing seems to be faster than Xperia S. Of course, if the color of Nexus 4 doesn't satisfy you, you can always use the stock image filter to enhance it.
One thing I missed the most about Xperia S is its physical camera button and quick launch mode. Nexus 4's Lockscreen camera widget is still way slower than the quick launch.
If you are into camera quality then Nexus 4 won't disappoint you.

I use to own an Sony lt28i (ION). Now I own the LG E960 (N4).
I found the IONS build quality to be much better than the N4, Sony Walkman kills Google Music, and Sony Media Apps are also very polished and work well. But the development was lacking for the ION ; mostly due to booloader being locked until recent.
The N4 has so much development already and tons more planned for the future. Most of the Sony apps can be flashed onto the N4.
Obviously Ion's 12 mp camera blows nexus 4's 8 mp camera away in clarity.
But did we forget about Nexus 4's Photosphere it is an amazing apk that really takes Sony amazing panorama sofware and basically turns it into a 360 panorama software.
I lost my Ion and got the nexus 4. There are times i miss my Ion but the nexus 4 has made me happy and is a suitable replacement.
AW: Impression of Nexus 4 from someone who had a Xperia S
For your sound complaint I'd suggest poweramp for playing music. I got pretty good sound with the equaliser

I have a Xperia S, Xperia TX and a Nexus 4 and the cameras on the Xperia's have a well known issue of slow focusing in low light. I would say the camera on the Nexus is better.
The screen on the Nexus is also better easily.

N4's camera has focusing issues as well. And you also has to take into account that XS camera is 12mp, when down sized to 8mp the quality is indeed better than N4.
The screen of XS is definitely better, at least color calibration wise. But plagued with yellow spots.
Of course XS and any Sony phones cannot get the same level of Dev activities as Nexus devices, no matter how Sony supports AOSP.

And I wouldn't exactly say Google music is that inferior than Sony Walkman player. The difference is small.

XS was terrible
I had the worst smartphone experience of my life with Xperia S. The thing that most bothered me was the touch-sensitive (or should I say touch-insensitive) buttons. They were very irresponsive and I had to touch them several times or press hard on them every time. It was like sony has designed them like that to bother the users. And it got hot even when I was browsing the internet. The only good thing about it was the screen but even that matched with a mediocre battery was not a good idea.
My N4 is a bliss to use. I really can't find anything wrong with it.
The screen on my N4 blows both the XS's that live in this house out of the water, it's much better.
My XS screen was just as nice to use however I had removed the shatterproof film of mine and this made it much more sensitive.
I have to agree about the sound though, can't get my N4 to sound as good as my XS did and the equaliser on the N4 just doesn't work right, dare to go a little to high on one of the band's and it just keels over sounding as flat as a fart.
Mine worked great out of the box. Most of the issues stated above weren't present on my nexus 4.
I actually had problems too till my 3rd nexus. The first one had a bad screen and awful sound distortion. Then I got the second. Everything was perfect but when I tried to turn up the volume the rocker was like broken. Most unlikely thing ever. Then 3rd time was the charm.

Own and love the Galaxy Nexus, I think 16gb is well more than enough storage for on-the-go music and app combination.
The two major issues I have with it however are:
1) The camera quality.
I find the image quality quite grainy after taking photos. The camera just doesn't cut it for me. However I'm hoping that the 8MP camera on the Nexus4 (I know megapixels isn't everything) will solve that issue.
***2) THE SPEAKER LOUDNESS***
I think of the old Christmas poem "Night Before Christmas"...
"'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even the Gnexus at max volume".
That'll be the deciding factor on if I'll be picking up the phone or not, in all honesty.
Love you XDA,
-Aero
Well its not release yet, but we can take a few clues.
Base on this review: www.youtube.com/watch?v=a24txcFBWyE
the LG Optimus G have very weak speaker, saying that when on its back, one might even miss a phone call. Although that doesn't necessarily mean it will be the same for the Nexus 4.
As for camera, I have no proof that the 8MP camera of this device is similar to one on the Optimus G for ATT, but maybe if it is, we can look at those sample shots posted online. I think the general consensus is its not that great and might have trouble under low lighting. Overall I think it will be at least better than the current 5MP which is enough for me.
Just wait for feedbacks from other buyers before making the purchase.
PS. I still laugh at the fact when the Galaxy Nexus was just released people claimed its 5MP camera is better than the SII camera, even with side by side pictures comparison.
I'm disappointed it won't support GLONASS, base on the specs from the PlayStore.
The camera uses a Sony BSI Sensor, so I'm sure images will be crisp and sharp. Not sure what aperture it uses though, hopefully a f2.4/2.6.

Well, just a very very simple thought: they advertise with their new feature, that panorama thing .. that's one selling point.. so the camera quality MUST be good, right?
Oh man, but I just remember Apple's Maps service ... hmmm.
Here's hoping both are better on the Nexus 4 as they are both somewhat of a disappointment on my Galaxy Nexus for me.

From Josh Topolsky's initial impressions, he stated that the camera performance was a big improvement, and that Google has specifically concentrated on low-light performance. I have high hopes that a Sony sensor, let alone a BSI sensor, leads to respectable if not admirable image quality. If the f/2.4 aperture is an indication, we could easily see this sensor beat the GS3 in terms of how much light it lets in, but it all comes down to how aggressive noise correction is, which is entirely software, and affects image sharpness the most.
While the camera is a big deal to me (a BIG deal), what I'm more worried about is the speaker/earpiece output. As everyone knows, the GNex speaker and earpiece aren't great (that's putting it mildly), so I'm really hoping this phone has great speaker/earpiece volume. Do I expect it to rival my SIII? No. But being able to actually use the phone as a PHONE in a crowded place and being able to hear would be nice.
According to Cnet- The battery life and Camera are the two weakest points of the Optimus G (ATT)- its unbelievable how the google nexus phones have sourly disappointing cameras year after year.
It is becoming a HUGE feature for people- and while software can correct come issues- hopefully it does, it has to have a good sensor to start- which the LG should.
I guess we will have to wait for a proper review to get some camera samples. that is def make or break for me. coming from a One X, so camera bar is set rather high
Sony makes the camera for the legendary iPhones so I don't see why they would disappoint now.
Wonder how it would compare to the Lumia 920

ATT Optimus G has 13 mpx camera and LTE.
maybe that's why google decided to go without the 13 mpx camera and without LTE.
the 8 mpx camera which is also used in the sprint version is supposed to be better.
and leaving out LTE saves battery.

I dont expect the 920 to be great...the 900 was overhyped with the ziess lens and was garbage. the 920 will have GREAT low light photos- that much we know...as for regular performance, I think it will still be slightly below the top notch camera phones (S3, OneX, iphone, etc)
Praying the nexus 4 has a great camera...if so, I will snatch it up.
and what about capture speed ?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
The One Series camera's and the Lumia 920 have a lower aperture f2.0 which is better suited for low light conditions. Now I'm pleased with the HOX camera, this has to be on par at least for day shots as I rarely take that many low light shots.
Be interesting to know what BSI module it uses so we can make comparisons!
I hope the camera is good same as speakers..

I have both and it is a matter of preference. The One is a fine piece of Hardware if you can get one with no problems Sense 5 is nice and well done, great camera, and amazing sound. Nexus 4 you will have the most current software out there but a sub par camera IMHO. Both have good call quality reception etc etc. I like them both for different reasons it is just a matter of personal preference. Good luck with your decision just be sure to check your One over before you walk out of the store I am #3 but it seems good so far. First one was very excessive heat and major lag issues and the second one the volume rocker did not work. Just letting you know so if you make the decision you can know to check them out before you leave
thanks for the responses.
I bought a nexus 4 earlier this month and a one on Saturday. I am returning ng the n4 because hspa was just too slow for me. I came from a one x which I had set on h instead of lte was still faster at loading web pages. Even when I was using WiFi, I found my one x faster and locked on better. There are some aspects of the N4 I like but the one is pretty sweet. Happy I switched.

It's definitely better than the n4. Vanilla android is featureless, colorless, and boring and the one runs faster and smoother than the N4 and the software and hardware is miles better than the N4
thanks guys. after playing with demo units today, I'm gonna go with new n4 (hopefull released on the 15th). JUst not worth the $300 premium for me. I found out i like the stock android experience.
I ended up upgrading to the ONE, it's been only two days but I'm kind of leaning towards It not being worth the cost premium.
The colors are a bit nicer, and the screen autobright is brighter, but my eyes can't really tell the difference in clarity. I'll be switching back and forth and will update my post later.

I owned the Nexus 4 since Nov. Now I have the One Developer. I can honestly say the following:
PROS
1 - The One is noticeably faster
2 - Flash is there on stock browser
3 - GPS locks are lightning fast
4 - Screen is sharper, clearer, better color reproduction
5 - Camera is much better
6 - Battery life is better (after last update)
7 - Sound from speakers is incredible - blows away the Nexus
8 - Listening thru good headset the sound coming from the HTC again blows away the Nexus (Beats)
9 - 64 gb storage vs 16 max on the Nexus
10 - Voice quality on normal calls is crystal clear
11 - Build quality much better
CONS
1 - No wireless charging
2 - No Google Wallet
3 - Nexus 4 will always get the updates first

quality of the camera is best .. its better than the iPhone 5 , Nexus 4' camera stands nowhere infront of htc one's camera. Hardware wise s4 pro vs snapdragon 600= huge difference . And Sense UI is way better than stock android ui atleast for me and dozen of folks around . Samsung GS4 is rubbish build quality sucks infront of the all metal one , ONE feels way better in hand ( both are of same price approx.) SGS4 camera has tough competition from our 4 ultrapixel cam .. You are wrong about the sense ui and quality of the cam ITS the one of the best out here on mobile (probs on no.1)
I'm not bothered about comparisons between the HTC One and Galaxy S4. I had the Galaxy Nexus and the AMOLED screen is not my preference. I do however, have a preference towards Stock UI. I have been using Nexus phones since Nexus One. The camera is only an issue if i decide to flash CM on the HTC One which means that the AOSP rom will not be able to process the photos in the same way, resulting in bad quality photos.
Depends on what you want from your phone and what style suits you, both of those phones can perform really well, so it really comes down to what you like the look of and what pros and cons can sway you as an individual.
For me the One is the better phone, without sounding biased.
Plus with cyanogen mod team doing their thing it won't be long until we have a fully fledged working vanilla style rom.

tmobile 1.27 here. 1.29 is supposed to improve things like camera, and the capacitive buttons. Both phones stock. i've used my nexus 4 for ~12days and my one for 3 days so far on tmobile. If the camera was clearly better or I needed the wifi calling or LTE, it would be worth the $230 premium to me easily. If you ave the option of a subsidized phone, then I would buy an S4 > resell, then buy the phone you want.
with tmobile, I haven't needed wifi calling yet, data speeds are plenty fast without lte (and we don't have it yet). The camera difference discussed in more detail here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41717762#post41717762
what's important nexus 4 vs one for me.
NEXUS 4 PROS
-noticeably faster in 8 tracks and tapatalk. (especially when scrolling, the one jitters a lot more) [turn taptalk posts/page to 50]
see discussion here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41719714#post41719714
update After enabling 2d gfx acceleration. The one is now a lot faster scrolling in 8 tracks. the N4 is slighly faster scroller in tapatalk. Giving the edge to ONE here now.
-camera is better outdoors. haven't done enough indoor testing to know yet.
-one gets hotter while using away from wifi
-less bezel, and much better screen to front face ratio. part of this is the physical buttons and front
speakers
-*major the n4 keyboard is much better. the one keyboard lags when switching to number mode and back. Also, during intensive applications the ONE keyboard lags even when typing letters. more noticeable when swyping. Swype on n4 is also better.
-the OS is more intuitive.
-power controls accessible from the the slide down menu.
-one has overly fragile camera cover plastic from reports here
-gallery app much better. I can share via gmail app and google plus directly and easily. on the one, you have to open up gmail app, then hit attach > find your folder.
-you can browse all your google cloud uploaded photoS on the gallery app.
-*minor n4 has google wallet (i use rarely)
-naked, the n4 is more comfortable in my hands.
BUTTONS
-htc one has physcial buttons, but the menu button is onscreen for much of the phone use. it's a waste of
screen space. the n4 has all on screen buttons. 100% on screen >> 40% on screen + 60% off screen buttons.
-at the botton of the front face, the htc has a speaker, capacitive buttons, and onscreen menu button. a
big chunk of space I consider not well spent. n4 has much less wasted space
-htc one capacitive buttons are less ergonomic for me to hit, because of this the phone feels less
ergonomic.
-on n4 screen buttons. I thought I would hate them, but I found out I love them.
*major visual feedback when a button is pressed. with the one, sometimes I miss the home button, and have
to press multiple times. (supposed to be improved with 1.29 update). this never happens with the n4.
every button lets you know when it's pressed. you know when you missed, and when the phone is just lagging.
*back, home, multitask, and menu buttons on in the same easy to find place.
*buttons change dynamically. if the back buttons minimizes the keyboard, it changes it's shape to be clear
It displays a menu button only when and if there is a menu option
ONE PROS
-*major screen has better colors,
-screen better clarity
-*major screen is brighter under auto bright
-*major battery life is supposed to be better, haven't had long enough to really evaluate
-*major 32gb vs 16gb on the n4 model. it's a major to me.
-IR remote is really cool. I don't know how much I'll use it though. Hopefully they come out with some 3rd party universal programmable remote software. If so, this will turn in to a *MAJOR.
-phone looks sleak, metal construction
-phone is louder, sounds better
-phone vibrate is very strong
-tmobile wifi calling + lte
-*major camera is better low light shooter, and quicker to focus
neutral
-the n4 is slightly wider screen aspect ratio. fits slightly more horizontal text reading. The one has more vertical space, more vertical text (at least when you don't have that pesky menu bar)
-gps locks plenty fast on both devices
-one phone feels denser

you can look at youtube vids to see how the one is ever so slightly faster in opening up browser and loading webpages. However, the nexus 4 is faster scrolling tapatalk and 8 tracks (one has jitters here).

thats because tapatalk is not optimised for 1080p
update After enabling 2d gfx acceleration. The one is now a lot faster scrolling in 8 tracks. the N4 is slighly faster scroller in tapatalk. Giving the edge to ONE here now.
hey guys you know that both of these phones are pretty good.so lets see if the cameras are the same too.
To see the comparison,go here:http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/12/04/nexus-4-vs-iphone-5-camera-shootout/

Okay, i honestly thought the iphone 5 is miles ahead camera wise. Guess i was wrong, comparison makes me more than satisfied with the output.
The Iphone 5 Camera isn´t better, you can´t rely on such comparisons because you could so easily manipulate them in a way you like. After you had both smartphones in your hand you can decide which suites you better. But in the end its a phone which isn´t made for taking hq pics, like all other smartphones as well.
im just annoyed with the pinkish purple tinting in photos
Never owned iPhone so didn't know it was so close to Nexus 4 in camera department.
All iPhone does it add punch to certain colors like green to make the photo look good. Nexus 4 on the other hand had more accurate colors. Especially the first photo where sky color was pretty accurate with Nexus 4 where as iPhone have it purplish tinge

I own both phones, iP5 and N4 and the iP5 camera is much better no question about it.
I think our camera blows. Only cuz low light is horrible.it's the same as the galaxy nexus.but I can't complain since the price is half an iPhone.

The iPhone 5 suffers from horrible purple fringing when faced directly at the sun (or another source of light). Apple won't come up with a recall, just expect a fix once the 5s comes out.
The camera on the iphone 5 is better, its one of the best cameras out there on a phone.

+1 My wife's Galaxy S4 makes me wanna cry. And to the point about phones not taking HQ pics, today's phones are without a doubt the next generation of point and shoot. We NEVER take our camera anywhere anymore unless we just happened to remember it. Now there's phones coming with 41 megapixel and great lenses. Cameras are becoming more important as we shift to this digital lifestyle. I for one wish we had a little better camera. But it works for me..... For now.

sweet I can compare to phone I will nver touch or want
I think the only reason iPhone camera *might* arguably produce better looking pictures is because of apples software which automatically adds a bunch of effects for the iSheep. I can just take a pic and edit it with default editor and I bet it would look better than iPhone s pics.

I remember having an iPhone and the camera is way better than the current Nexus 4 camera. Still room for improvement!
You also have to consider the price of the device out-right... N4 is a much cheaper phone using parts not has expensive as the iPhone5... if you take that into consideration, N4 puts up a good fight..
So if you compare it strickly on hardware without factor in price, there is no comparison the iPhone5 will be a better device...
Lots of Apple haters.. Then again it is XDA. Personally, and from a photographer's standpoint, my iPhone 4S took better images and videos than my Nexus. More specifically in low light situations. Can't see how the Nexus would also take better images than the iPhone 5. Because that would mean the Nexus takes better pictures than the Galaxy S4. Either way, I'm not saying our camera on or phone is terrible, but it most definitely isn't in the conversation of being in the top 3, and possibly not in the top 5.
As an owner of iPhone 4s, user of iPhone 5s and a new owner of Nexus 4, I'd say both iPhones have superior cameras in terms of image quality and colors. Nexus 4 has seems to have a faster camera though, and while the image quality isn't top, it is still quite good. Why would you expect a better camera on a much cheaper device anyway?
The issue I have with the N4 is that the pics look good in preview mode sat using up a quarter of the desktop screen but if you go full size...whoahhhhhhhhh. Noise noise noise.:silly:
I've tried several different camera apps (even one that will take 8MP 12MB .PNG shots) and the result is the same for all of them, just noisy full size shots, even in bright sunlight. So the issue with the N4's camera isn't compression at the file output stage it's somewhere earlier in the chain.
Colour balance is good though.
Someone really needs to hack that camera but I fear it may be a hardware limitation.

its behind s4 camera, not even talking about Lumia 920/925/1020. But again any phone looks like toy agaisnt Lumia cameras...
Personally from my experience all Nexus phones have come with crappy cameras. The problem is the company doesn't implement a really good camera for the Nexus which is beyond me. Even though it's an 8mp camera my note 2 takes way better still images as well as videos.
For instance on this phone when recording a video you can't click the screen to focus in on whatever your recording, instead it just takes a picture which is stupid. Quality isn't great.

hi all
i need your suggestions about xperia z1 and gs4 i9500.now a days i am planning to buy phone but i am confused which one should i select between these cells gs4 i9500 or xperia z1?
anybody can suggest me which one is the best between these two cells?
which one is best performance wise?
which one is best camera results wise? i saw pictures and videos both these cells on some forum and i surprised to see that gs4 camera result is better than xperia z1 but how is it possible that gs4 is camera result is better than xperia z1 because xperia z1 has 20 MP camera?
and the last question is that which one is best battery life wise?
If I were you id go with the X1. The ui is Much nicer, the Phone just looks gorgeous and is Made of good Materials, and Its faster the camera thing is afaik a Software issue thats fairly cpmmon on Sony phones So just play with. The settings a Bit Also tje 21 Mp are only while taking 4:3 piczures so a Lot of People get their hopes too high when comparing the z1 camera with other smartphone cameras.. But go with the z1 you will like it and Its waterproof

When I decided to buy my Z, I look at S4 and saw that the rounded corner design looks like the rest of the other Samsung phones.
So I bought the Z. Performance wise, not groundbreaking difference. Looks and feel, very different...
More Suggestions please.....
No Touchwiz.

I would either go with the s4 or Korean version of the g2. S4 because of better screen and removable battery and better camera than the z and comparable with the z1 but top reason better battery consumption in my opinion and longer video playback and web browsing. Korean version of G2 because removable battery and camera with ois for better video recording and better low light pictures and videos and a bigger screen but smaller in size than the z1.The only thing that bothers me about the g2 isnthr placement of the volume rocker and the power button . That's bout it. The IP rating is the one of the few things that get my interest in the z but after a while I don't really care about it . It never get near water at all but its a good feature to have.

I disagree. The z1 destroys the s4 in almost every aspect. Its faster, better built, bigger battery, better camera and allthough the screen has worse viewing angles its true to life, unlike the oversaturation of samsungs. The g2 vs z1 vs note 3 is a better comparison. Also the s4 camera is comparable to the z and g2, not superior.
The only superiority you are seeing is post processing since they all use the identical exmor rs modules,
Sonys software is notoriously shoddy with their cameras since they make the sensors for most highend devices, they put their latest tech in their devices first. This gives no time for sotware development. The 13.1mp exmor rs module came out in feb 2013, the z came out that same month, hiw could they possibly have tested proper processing mechanics in time? Each firmware relase seems to improve the quality.
The z1 sensor is larger, higher pixel count (can do lossless zoom like the nokia), faster aperture, wider capture range. In pure specs it is a superior camera and it will improve with firmware.

Its just my opinion . And my opinions are based on real life hands on by using my cousins s4 . And picture quality and video from video reviews . And for being faster etc , is it that fast like seconds faster ? And if I'm not wrong I forgot which site that I visit that the s4 is one of the best in battery consumption. Well i guess op just have to go to a shop and try out all the handsets and decide on his own.

Fair enough, it's your opinion.
But the cpu is more than just speed, it's the SOC, as a whole. In particularly the gpu (these are 1080p devices) and the newer adreno 330 is significantly faster than the adreno 320. 50% more infact. Add a newer architecture, improved memory speed.
And with the cameras, when conparing a z and s4 side by side. You immediately get a slap in the face from the colours the display produces. to the untrained eye the s4 produces better results simply from the exaggerated colours on screen. Transfer the photos onto the same device and the difference is insignificant (the z initially had over agressive noise reduction which was corrected in firmware, which is why early reviews gave the edge to the s4).
I see what your saying about the battery, dissapointing cconsidering the sheer size. Hopefully it'll improve in fitmware.
Would I buy a s4 over a z1? No chance. Maybe a nexus 5, g2 or note 3 but not a s4.
I had s3 and note 2 last time I decided to buy new phone same one told me to go for z. So I was between s4 or z because of very good reviews I bought xperia z AND I REGRET IT EVERY DAY. Xperia Z is a good machine but not what I wanted. If you like to root your phone and like to play with different rooms /mods then stay away from xperia
Lol.. With z1 you can't even compare s4. Trust me I've seen both the phones personally. Z1 looks so premium. I would personally go with z. Amazing camera features as well. And customisation wise, really.. It doesn't matter as long as stock is good. I've tried all Roms around for zl. And frankly I just reverted back to stock. And if you want pure stock feel Go with next nexus 5.
What exactly are you trying compare here anyways

Are you a noob or just some kind of troll? The Xperia phones are the most userfriendly when it comes to rooting / modding / tweaking, compared to the Samsung ones.. Ever heard of the anti-rooting KNOX warranty-breaking thing that Samsung is so proud of?

I was debating and then I was like "what was I thinking" though the camera is mediocre, and speakers are Ok, everything else is fantastic.
I was going to wait for the HTC one2, and realized that more than likely no other phone soon will be able to last as long as the z1 with their battery saving software.
to be honest with you, as much as I complain about my Z1, overall there isnt one device out there for me that tops it. Just hope that the new update will do something to the Camera and 4K vid recording is something I really really wanted, but not enough to move be back to Samsung.
I have Z1, SGS4 and used the nexus 5 for a day and a half, I will compare them below
Nexus 5 best performance but lack features
SGS4 worst performance (too much lag and stuttering) but has lots of features (most of which are useless and no-one actually uses them except to show off)
Z1 excellent performance (almost identical to the nexus 5) and has some useful features like camera apps, small apps ...etc
Although the Z1 is not perfect (nothing is perfect), but it is the best overall phone out there. I will get chance to play with the HTC ONE for few days in a week or two then I will probably be able to say what is the best phone currently available (apart from the LG G2 which I haven't had the chance to play with).
Not even considered it, got it sim free and I'm happy with it
I returned mine because I spotted a dead (or maybe stuck) pixel on the screen. I hope I'll have better luck next time.
I am very very disappointed in the camera, the speaker is actually close to top considering its a tiny waterproof speaker but I love every thing else about the Z1 so no, I didn't return my device and I wont be doing so.

Actually I had the Note 3, it is the worst mistake that I made up until now!
now the problems I had with it are more philosophical than fair, so to make it fair I'll only point out the problems that "others" consider worthy!
1. Not so great looking even though its an improvement over the S4 and Note 2
2. Has A LOT of bloat ware
3. Cheap looking/feeling device (like all Samsungs)
4. Depending on what you do with it scales form lagging a couple of times a day to constantly lagging (I couldn't handle the lag so...)
5. Bigger than most people would want it to be (I actually where okay with it mainly because I didn't called anyone with it)
6. You would look Very-Very stupid talking with it on the street or anywhere else for that matter!

mostly personally preference but Im coming from a S3 owner, but here are some of the reasons
-touchwiz, hate it with a passion, actually got to play with a real note 3 today at the store and it actually still lag a little bit like seriously lol?! Checked the ram consumption it always over 1.2+ gigs after I clear everything it goes back up quickly no wonder why they keep added more rams for all the galaxy phones. My Z1 has to be on for a couple of weeks to hit over 1 gig and generally around 0.9.
-hate OLED colors, it has gotten a lot better with the pentile problem but still not enough to bring me back. Triluminos looks better to me straight on even if you have to sacrifice the wash out colors in extreme angles which I never look at my phone that way. Plus I see color shifting problems on Note 3, like yellow would turn green in a angle, so viewing angle is not a clear victory on the note 3 neither (same with Nexus 5 and G2 which have their own problems in extreme angle when I played with them today). Didn't get to do out door test with the note 3 not sure if it become unreadable under the sun.
-Built quality, I dont think I need to say much here, just personally when I pay hundreds of dollars for a flashship device I want it to actually feel like a flagship device.
the only features in the Note 3 that I want in the Z1 is the 4K video recording, downsampling 4K video to play on 1080p screen is a huge difference. You don't need a 4K display to take advantage of it. I used to think that the multi screen features from note2 and S3 is going to make me happy with my S3 again, but after the update came out I've never use it once.... Its all personal preference so those my not apply to others.

I'm coming from Note 2, Galaxy s4 and HTC one to Sony Z1, apart from note 2 (which I liked) the other's are disappointing s4 has lag and loads of stupid features you turn off, HTC One was boring and battery life was rubbish plus I was scared to scrape or dent the metal (best sound though) . I was wanting Note 3 but too expensive and cant believe it still has lag, plus Knox! (which totally put me off s4)
Sony Z1 feels premium has a decent enough camera and battery is probably the best with the note 2 I've had.
Before I had Z1 I was waiting for Nexus 5 and was going to sell s4, but after seeing it, Z1 is much better.
Thank you all guys you opened (again) my eyes. There are just few things that make me sad about the Z1.
- camera is not so fantastic. Unless you have the stone hand just pressing the hw button from focus to shoot makes the phone shaking and the picture a little blurry. This is almost not noticeable with high lights but as soon start to be a little darker things gets worse. Thus in low lights this camera is totally incapable to take decent pictures, what you see 'good' in your screen will be post processed and 'destroyed'. No manual mode could help ATM.
- freaking hardware buttons
I can't believe that my 5" real estate triluminus 400+ DPI 1080 **** should have a damn waste of space: soft keys IMHO are the android cancer. Now I'm using a pie (after gtm) it's okay but still annoying and uncomfortable. I'll be happy to pay one dollar more and have at least a central hw button. Note that I compared twitter, Google+ and Chrome with the iPhone and on the smaller 4" there is much more space!!! This piss me off!!!!
- unlock the boot loader. I used to pay the retail price in order to not increase the US mafia of carriers. After more than a month this phone isn't really unlockable. No official words from Sony about the fact they are working for a fix or a date. This scares me.
- 2013 and our display is not oleophobic. This makes me sad even more when a friend tell me: cool phone can I see it? And my screen is a finger print fest. Tried almost any good screen protector antifinger print. None of them really works without decrease the screen quality.

Just one tip.
Don't compare N5 and Z1 now.
Wait until Z1 gets 4.4 then you'll see what Z1 is capable to do.
As I said few times, it's better to have great camera (hardware) which is fixable than great software without hardware support.
Z1 has great camera and with 4.4 update we will have the best device money can buy...
Everyone compares N5 and Z1 now and all of them are unique in conclusion - these two devices are similar but remember we are comparing 4.2.2 with 4.4 - so you can just imagine Z1 with a KitKat under the hood
It will fly
