I just can't let the Nook Color go! [Well, not really :D]

I've been enjoying my NC since February. I use it mainly for e-books, e-mail, web surfing, casual gaming and occasional Netflix streaming. I love tinkering with it using different ROMs, etc.
About 2 weeks ago, I purchased a XOOM and have been enjoying it as well. Initially, I thought that I would just sell the NC since it would be redundant to have two Android tablets, but I just can't let it go. The experience of using both devices is very different. While XOOM is great for surfing the web (native resolution webpages without zoom in/out), typing long e-mails or watching a movie, NC is very portable and perfect for reading (can't hold the XOOM -or any other 10.1" tab for that matter- in one hand for an extended period of time).
I guess I'm going to keep both. I was wondering if any of you were/are in the same situation? Did you end up keeping the NC?

I'm not quite in this position just yet. But I know exactly how you feel. I really enjoy the Community that the Nook Color has, I love the size and portability that comes with this device.
But I want more. Really, I want to be able to have a tablet media center on the go, and the Nook is really lacking without hdmi out.
So I find myself really pondering what to jump for next... And unfortunately few things are making me want to. Doesn't help that I promised the wife this Nook Color in fall for her classes... Hope Amazon hurries up with their Nook Killer a.k.a Coyote.

I'd like to pick up a 10" tab running android.
I can't see ever getting rid of the Nook Color, even when that happens. I'll own this device until the end of it's life.
I like the form factor, and the nature of it as an e-book reader means it will always have use for me.
I can't see being the avid reader I am on a 10" tab.
I've been looking at tablets with my lady, and she still wants a Nook Color. It's the size that does it for her, and the quality of the device.
The Nook Color hits a quality level in it's offering that hasn't been seen in quite some time on the regular retail market.

Also remember 7in Acer Iconia A100 will be out in the US in about a month for approx. $300.00

This is going to sound weird after stating this thread, but I sold the Nook Color today
Someone made an offer that I couldn't resist (came ahead at the end), and after seeing the upcoming 7" tablets, as well as the 8.9" Sammy and anticipated Amazon tablet, I decided to let the little guy go before its value stats to decrease due to competition.
I'll be definitely picking up a 7" tablet to accompany my XOOM in the future, but I don't know which one yet.
I guess this should be my good by post to the Nook community. It's been fun!

Does the Acer bring with it the end of the NC as a tablet?
I looked up what specs I could find and the features do look impressive, except for the battery. It appears this is the tradeoff that was made to cut down on weight so "it would be suitable for female users". 1530mah that will last up to 5 hours? That sounds a bit optomistic to me. To put it in perspective the NC has a 4000mah battery that is supposed to last up to 8 hours.

No tablet currently available can beat the nooks beautiful screen. You can all the specs in the world but if your screen sucks there really isn't any point to it.

Isn't it just an IPS screen with 1024 x 600 resolution? None of the tablets (not just 7" competitors)? Really?
There are many tablets in the market with similar -or better- screen compared to NC. Besides, my XOOM doesn't have an IPS screen and I'm perfectly happy with it.

When you look at the overall specs of the nook as compared to the other 7" tabs on the market, the nook just comes out on top. This takes into account the price and the screen. One of the most comfortable things about the nook IMO is the design which boots first from the sd card. It is almost impossible to brick this thing. The only feature the other tablets have that I would want is a functional webcam. With CM7 and host mode enabled, I have all the features the other tablets have except webcam. At present, HC, as an OS, leaves a lot to be desired, the other tabs have poor to average battery life and there are few tablet optimized apps. Yes, HC can run all the apps out there but the overall results are somewhat less than optimal. For my money, I'll wait till q4 when we should have ICS and the quadcore chips out there. Not trying to flame any other tablets but I have tried out most of the 10" tabs extensively and have not found one I would jump on right now. Just saying.....

I may be looking into selling my nook here. The new 7" Acer Iconia seems like a great deal @ ~$300, with all the dual core goodness and nook size, but I shall be waiting for reviews before making up my mind.

As already mentioned in this thread, the main category that NC lags behind is anything multimedia related. The speaker, headphone jack, lack of microphone, etc etc. Of course, these are not expected on a NC, because it was designed as an eReader. However, since you are putting it above other tablets -even the 10.1" ones- then the comparison will be valid (again, normally I wouldn't even compare it).

Actually, one of the reasons that I decided to sell the NC now was because it is pretty much alone in its segment (i.e., 7" tablet) and the price is its biggest strength. However, any 7" tablet that is around $300 may make it harder to sell the NC in the future.
As I mentioned, I am still in the market for a 7" tablet. I just need Staples to start carrying 7" models, so that I can get it for next to nothing

So, you're saying size really DOES matter... lol... just had to!

My situations with the Nook is this. I didnt need a tablet. Couldn't even try to make up an excuse as to why I needed to buy one. All I knew is after reading these threads is that I just wanted one. Now I couldn't live without it. Its totally replaced my laptop and put a serious dent in my main desktops use too. I will buy another tablet once one is released that's worthy but the Nook has earned its right to stay indefinitely.

I bought the Nook Color because it was cheap and hackable and I figured it'd keep me busy and avoid ay temptation to buy something fancy/expensive because there will be lots of movement in the field this year. But once CM7 came out for it I've just been a really happy camper. I think what it's going to take to get me to move is a 4x3 aspect IPS screen maybe running ice cream sandwich, and a "family" data plan so I don't have to think about tethering or wifi access. The 16x9 screen just doesn't fit web pages or book reading nicely when in portrait orientation which I seem to favor. Yeah I just described an iPad, but I'm not going there.

Rumor has it that XOOM2 will be in 4x3 aspect and will be released -according to Moto CEO- in September.

[Q] Thoughts on KFHD with GAPPS and Alt Launchers

Hey everyone, now that the KFHD can run alternative launchers and access the play store, I'm wondering what your opinion is on the KFHD, specifically how does it compare to the Nexus 7. Now that the N7 got bumped to 16gb for $199 and the KFHD can run the play store and alt launchers I think they're pretty close. Any thoughts?

Unless you are invested in the Amazon ecosystem, I don't see the benefits of the KFHD over N7. Having said that, I'm KFHD fan and NOT a fan of the N7

IF you want the FULL Android experience, the KFHD is nothing but a half assed version. Even after root, gapps and alternative launcher.
IF you enjoy Amazon Media, have Amazon prime and invested in Amazon, then you will be happy with the KFHD.
I felt nothing but trapped and frustrated with the KFHD because I wanted the full android experience with FULLY functional gapps.
It varies between people and their needs and wants.

But my point is that you can get the Play store working on the KFHD so the Amazon ecosystem vs. Google Play Store is a non-factor now, as is the 8 GB vs 16 GB since they are now both priced at $199 for 16 GB.

Not all apps are marked 'compatible' with the KFHD on the play store. Doesn't mean it won't work but you would still end up having to side load anyways.
Still not a deal breaker though, since it still brings much more to the table. Just throwing that out there in case people think the play store will automatically let you install all available apps.

However from this quote, you sound like you've made your mind and just looking to justify the purchase..
Just remember, if you want voice search, you won't have it. If you want Google now, you won't have it, if you want the latest and greatest Android software, you won't get it. The only way would be through a custom rom. Headway is being made but it's still in early development, but you need to keep in mind that you will probably have to choose between Amazon and Android ROMs.
Choose what you think you'll be happy with.

Youtube also works half ass. Can't login into account and sometimes it hangs for no apparent reason.

Yikes that might be a deal breaker. I really like the 7" form factor as a media consumption device (reading RSS feeds, streaming videos from a network drive, youtube, etc.). I do like the N7 but the speakers kinda suck and dual-band wifi would be nice. Any other serious bugs?

The speakers on the KFHD were awesome, wish I could have them. I do however use an app called music volume eq which is free from the play store. It's actually pretty amazing, especially with headphones. IMO it sounds even better than the zune software player through my PC and headphones. But if you just want straight up great sound without the use of headphones, KFHD would win in that department.
The KFHD is slightly wider and heavier than the N7. Being a woman and having smaller hands, the slight difference still makes the N7 more comfortable and easier to hold. People say the N7 fits nicely in (larger) pant, coat or dress shirt pockets. I haven't done that myself. The KFHD feels bulkier but it feels solid. I read people stated that the N7 felt cheap but I was shocked when I opened the box. It felt nice to me and no cheapness feel at all, but still not as solid as the KFHD, it has a much larger bezel.
There are some build complaints about the N7, though some of it makes me wonder if it's just nerd OCD or misuse. Anyways, it's advised to find a later build date C9O was the most current. I have a C8O which was perfect out of the box. The number corresponds to the manufacturer calendar month.
It can be a tough choice. If you have the extra $$, you can get both locally, play with them for a week to decide and return the one you don't want. Just find a store that doesn't ask questions about returns and no restocking fee.
I love my N7 but I try to stay neutral in these respects. However between these two forum sections, the KFHD gets very little traffic. Maybe more once the boot strap is functional but right now the N7 is winning. They are selling about a million a month according to Asus.

Yes, I understood your point. But why go through all the hassle of rooting the KFHD (and run the risk of having it unrooted at the next update), adding a custom launcher (that may not work 100% correctly) when for the same price you can get a device that simply works out of the box?
I own a TON of tablet devices, included in the mix is a 16GB KFHD and Samsung GTab 2 7.0. I love 'em all, but if I had to pick one to be a general purpose tablet it would NOT be a KFHD. I've "specialized" my KFHD to be "media consumption only". CBZ/CBR books, videos (MX Player is terrific), and music (UberMusic w/Zune skin is beautiful). My KFHD is NOT rooted but I do use ADW Launcher EX.

Trade kindle fire hd for chrome book?

Hi everyone. I have an offer for someone to buy my kindle fire hd. If I did sell it I would be picking up a chrome book. I type a lot on forums and use within at work. I am thinking it might be better for web browsing. What are your opinions? I really like my fire hd and I would miss the touch screen along with the many games. I don't know what should do so I am looking for suggestions. It is a pain to type on the fire hd, I really wish you could install swiftkey keyboard as the predictive typing is terrible on the kindle. Once again just shoot me your thoughts,this isn't a one is better than the other, I just want to make an educated decision.
What I do on my kindle.

If you really like having the touch screen and still want the option of having a better way to type, you should look into the Asus Transformer series tablet. You can buy a custom made keyboard dock that doubles the battery life and adds more ports(usb, full size sd I think). Its not one of those cheap keyboards either, its made by Asus for the device(super thin, very portable) hence the name Transformer, best of both worlds touchscreen tablet or mini laptop. It is very easy to attach and detach. Also Asus is awesome about updating their software, usually one of the first tablets to get new android updates.
This device would fit every need you mention above. You can get the TF300 series w/ keyboard dock for under 500. If you want best of the best the TF700 w/ dock is about 620-650, screen resolution is amazing something like 1920x1200.

Hi,I would love to get the asus but price is 2x what I am willing or able to spend right now. Before I bought the first fire, the transformer prime was what I wanted. Where I am right now,about 250 would be my Max budget. I am offered 200 for my fire hd with my case and the remaining 10 months on my best buy warranty for accidental coverage. So the chrome book would only be an additional 50 bucks. That's about all I can do right now as money is a bit tight. Thanks for the suggestion though,it was a great one.

Chrome books are a fair spec on paper but the screen is horrible. Not IPS... matt and low viewing angles.

How do you know the screen is horrible? Do you own one? Is the screen as nice as the kindle hd..... No. But it's not horrible, I have used one and the screen still appears high Def. Regarding viewing angles, I sit in front of my computer not off to the side so that's a non issue. Some people prefer the matte screen over the gloss, I do.

Nexus 10.. and get a blue tooth keyboard if you need to type a lot. It was debuted online on 10/29. Not sure of the release date yet. It's made by Samsung, not Asus this time around.
The Asus transformer is not a bad choice. With the dock, it gets turned into an android netbook of sorts. Not to mention it's detachable and you can just carry the tablet portion around if you want. Though my husband says that it feels awkward on the dock, he hardly every uses it. Possibly only with the 1st gen, never tried the 2nd.
Or you can be adventurous and get the Microsoft surface running full windows 8 Not light on the pocket book though.

That's nice but budget is 250. Choices are slim.

Perhaps the N7 then. You can install keyboards to your hearts content without jumping through hoops. Plus get a BT keyboard. The 16 GB is now $199 and the 32 is $249.
Otherwise you can take a look at pre-owned transformers, but I'd take the N7 any day.. I love the 7" size.

So you would take a nexus 7 over the chrome book? I have heard negative things about the 7s build quality. I think I would rather keep my kindle hd. Why is no one for the chromebook?

It's a new OS. From my knowledge, it doesn't run Android, it runs chrome OS. It can go either way and it would be in early development in comparison to Android. Someone's gotta test it though

I have used one in the flesh for about 20 minutes. I don't own one because I did not like the screen quality.

"The new Chromebook's display is still a fairly mediocre TN panel, but for anyone used to the majority of low cost PC notebooks over the past few years it's really not any different. The 16:9 display measures 11.6 inches along the diagonal with a 1366 x 768 resolution.
Viewing angles are pretty bad. Max brightness tops out at 233 nits, although contrast ratio is better than a lot of low cost notebooks. The low max brightness means that outdoor use will be an issue, generally speaking for really bright sunlight you'll need something closer to 500 nits to be usable."

thanks deagle. I ordered 2 of them but they are out of stock. I am gonna hold onto my kindle hd until I test out the chrome book for a little while. The other one is a Christmas present from my sister and I for my parents who are not computer savvy at all. I figure this will be easier than a windows Pc would be for someone who never owned a computer. Thanks again

I think the chromebooks are great and especially since they are that cheap. The only thing that turns me off is that there is no internal storage, you have to access all your files from google drive. Not a bad thing if you are always near wi-fi or you have the 3G version($450 though).
Have you thought about just getting a bluetooth keyboard for the kindle, i'm sure there is one out there that is compatible.
By the way I own a KFHD and two Nexus 7's. I don't agree with everyone that says the build quality on the Nexus is bad, feels solid and one of them has been dropped at least 10 times w/ no damage, screen has no light bleed and great color, a powerhouse when it comes to multitasking, and all jacks(usb,headphone) are very tight.
That being said the KFHD has an even better screen w/ richer color, 10x's better audio, hdmi port, and better overall handling feel.

I think the thin client/cloud model has a future... and I have been tempted... and would have pressed the "go" button but the 3G ones were not available... and I don't like the screen too much (but then again, I like IPS and glossy).

Fire HD or galaxy tab 2?

I am selling my iPad that I regret buying. I want something else. I'm between the kindle fire HD 8.9 and the galaxy tab 2 10.1 are there good reasons to get this over the galaxy? I see the specs difference. But I'm still undecided. Any help would be appreciated.

Its a big "it depends"
If you're a prime member, that's a huge + for the kfhd
Its much easier to have a normal android experience on the tab2, but the specs are a lot lower. If you're willing to deal with rooting to get play on the KFHD and dodging amazons updates that break root the KFHD is better device. Or if you don't care about the full android experience and just want to consume media, the KFHD is great. I think only you can answer how important some of this stuff is to you.
Tab2 wouldn't be my first choice unless you got one of those crazy black friday deals on it for a 10" tablet in that price range though. I'd be more likely to compare the tf300t. Much better SOC and cheaper.

Is the kindle that much faster and is the display really look better? I like the idea of being able to expand the storage on the g-tab and I own the s2 and I love it. Whatever I get will be rooted almost as soon as I take it out of the box. Its what I do so that doesn't matter.

why did you get rid of the ipad? The kindle sucks, i'm going to return mine (got the 8.9 for $250). I can't even run Gmail without it crashing.

I'd tell you to look into the nook hd+ if you're rooting for sure, it has the SD slot, cheaper, but no camera. Can't tell you what the progress is on root though.

I don't like the iPad. The os is so limited. Everything is so slow. And programs crash all the time. The crashing may have been because I jail broke it but either way it just sucked. I prefer android.

Was it an ipad 1? IMO the ipad 3 i have is worlds above the kindle fire HD, except for the price. The kindle is going to be even more limited and slow than an ipad 2-4. Samsung has been known to not updating their software so i'd recommend a nexus tablet if you want to go android.
I returned my kindle. Right now i have a nexus 7 and an Ipad 3. The ipad 3 works so good it's kinda boring, the nexus is completely open and there are alot of mods you can do to it. At this point i would not recommend a kindle unless you really like the amazon interface. CM10 looks like it's coming soon, but there will be lots of bugs, and you have to wait.

Maybe not exactly the info you're looking for, but here's my experience with the various manufacturers..
My current round up of devices include:
1. NookTablet
2. NookTouch
3. Moto Xoom (gave to Dad, but I still maintain)
4. Sammy Galaxy Tab 2 7"
5. Asus/Google Nexus 7
6. Kindle Fire 8.9 (just got this week; they had a $50 off deal one day)
7. Sammy Note I (phone)
4,5, and 6 are the only "current" models; all the other have newer versions.
They all have their pro and cons...here's my opinion on some of them.
Overall, the Nexus 7 is the winner.
If you're looking to run custom roms, the N7 has the widest selection and (more importantly) most active development community.
It also has the fastest proc of the bunch.
Its one real drawback, as you and others mentioned, is that it does not have expandable memory.
The Gtab2/7"..the 4 things it has over the N7:
1. Rear camera
2. Expandable storage
3. I/R blaster
4. A lot cheaper (I've seen refurbs on woot! twice now)
It also has a good selection of custom roms, but the dev community isn't as active as the N7...and that's only going to get worse as time goes on.
It is noticeably slower than the N7!
If you run any rom not based off of Samsung's rom, you lose the I/R blaster.
It's not that much of a loss because the available I/R remote control software sucks.
I've used the rear (and front camera) not more than a handful of times.
As for the Nook:
I would only recommend a Nook if you happen to frequent B&N stores often. Or you have already purchased e-books/magazines through them.
Their stock rom allows you to read any book while in store.
Their "Nook Kids" is available as an app for iOS, but not available for any Android devices except their own Nooks.
From my experience their Kids apps are nothing more than a larger selection of kids books, and they allow you to record yourself while reading the book.
I've run custom roms on it and ended putting the stock rom back on (rooted and Google Play installed of course)
As for the Kindle:
I would recommend if you have already purchased e-books/magazines through Amazon and/or have an Amazon Prime account.
Amazon (AFAIK) doesn't allow you to stream any video through android devices except their own Kindle Fires.
So as a Prime member, I was able to watch Fringe for the first time last night (a title not available on NetFlix).
You can also "check out" a lot of books without purchasing them.
I did root and get the Google Play store installed on this too.
I most likely won't be installing any custom roms on it.
Not because I like the Amazon UI or anything...but simpy because:
With both the Nook and the Kindle, you get value added services (like being able to read books in store and streaming content not available on other devices/roms)
So for me personally, I'm a big Amazon user, and am digging my 8.9 and the Prime features.
If I was looking for best specs and most open, I'd probably get an Nexus 10

I own a GT 2 7, and theres a catch about the SD memory expansion and is that you cant install applications or application data on the SD; not at least on stock rom; the expansion its only useful for media (music, movies, docs, book, etc..) not for apps.

It all depends on the features you want now, and or later.
If you like The Fire HD, it has amazing dual speakers and is a great multimedia device, but is limited at the moment due to the Amazon ecosystem. But both the 8.9" and 7" variants, are having custom roms being developed for them, because the bootloaders have been cracked. So if your willing to wait for the goodies, then go with the Kindle Fire HD.
If you want something with more of a all around Android Experience now go with the Galaxy Tab. In my overall Opinion if it maters, pick the Kindle Fire HD either model size.

I ended up ordering the gtab 2 10.1 I want the expandable storage for movies and pics. 16gb is fine for The rest. Thanks to everyone for their input.

KF 8.9 vs Nook HD+

Has anyone here tried the Nook HD+ also?
I'm on the fence between a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and a Nook HD+. I wasn't sure if I wanted a 7" or 9" at first but I think I need a 9" because I mostly will want to use it to look at PDF tech manuals and CAD schematic drawings when I'm on the go crawling around in areas where it is inconvenient to carry a laptop. Aside from that, its nice to have something to use on the plane or sitting around at the airport.
The main differences I see are:
Kindle: thinner (barely), has mimo wifi (don't know if its a real diff), camera (already have a phone camera), micro usb (don't have to buy proprietary connectors), ambient light sensor (might save some batt)
Nook: lighter (not by much), higher ppi (barely), external storage (although I'm not sure if I really need it)
Price is about the same if I look on ebay. Software is the same if I put on CM10, although I'm not sure if the kindle is as far along.
For me, seems like the biggest diff is the micro usb vs the external storage, and maybe the weight, hard to know how important 2.4oz is. I suspect that the external storage won't really be needed so if the weight isnt a big diff, I think I may lean towards the kindle.
I'd be interested in any other important differences people have noticed.

They are all so close as far as specs...
I chose the kfhd for the hdmi output, otherwise I woulda gone nexus.. perhaps nexus 10 is a valid option? Gps is a nice feature.

The nexus 10 is $400 where the kindle fire 8.9 and nook hd+ can be got for the $250 range so its no comparison there.
If I was getting a 7", I might get a nexus

I've rooted every device I've ever owned on the Android platform. I chose the Kindle 8.9 because of the huge speaker sound difference, hdmi out, and I have Amazon prime. I fully expected to have to root this to be close to what I consider a working tablet.
But... considering the ability to sideload apps, which nook doesn't do out of the box, I have no need to root. There isn't one app I use that hasn't easily installed. I use Chrome as the browser and it's definitely speedy enough for me. This thing is a pleasant surprise and I love it right out of the box. The ability to sideload apps without rooting is the largest difference between the nook and the Kindle, and that makes the Kindle a no brainer to me.

To me the only advantage the Nook has is the ability to boot to CM10 from the SD card. Amazon's content and the sound quality on the KFHD won me over.

Well, I don't intend to use any of the amazon content. or at least very rarely.
The speakers are of no value to me as I would use headphones (unless the audio on there is better too).
but yes, it seems the SD card is the only major advantage. and to me, it seems the proprietary connector and the lack of ambient light sensor is the major disadvantage.
I'm not sure if what kind of difference there is between the displays. or just holding the device. the nook is lighter but I don't know if it is noticable. I saw one member mention that he thought it "felt" much lighter" eventhough he knows they are about the same.
I'm also assuming the CM10 will run faster than the standard with sideloaded apps

Yup same here I picked the kindle fire hd for the great sounding speakers and its good for emulators

I've held both in my hand briefly and couldn't really tell. But maybe I missed something

Like I said it's subjective. The fire just felt more solid in my hands
