Well Lots of people told me my Visa Debit Card would not work, so I just added it to my wallet 3 minutes ago and just bought an App (VPlayer Pro for 4.99 to test it out).
It said success and it said it will send me the link momentarily.
I live in Canada, And I have a TD Visa Debit Card.
I don't have a Real Credit card and thought I would not be able to purchase the Nexus 4 Without asking a friend to use his Card, turns out I should be able to now
Sure debit cards work. Not sure why it would be different for Canada. But I guess it could have been. I only use debit cards for these types of things. Just in case the info gets stolen. I only keep what I'm spending in the debit account.

I've used Visa Debit cards constantly on Google Play, so....
Google Wallet has supported adding all major forms of cards for many months now. Initially they didn't but this has been fixed and now they use a virtual mastercard that charges your own card when making purchases.
Oh okay, Because I added the same card months ago and it always never worked.
I took a shot at re adding the card and it worked perfectly
Ironically I forgot my CC's at home on launch day, tried to use my TD Visa Debit to buy the phone, twice, fail, recycled the CC info Google had hoping that they wouldn't ask for the digits on the back of the card...tense moments.
I'll have to test the TD card for an app purchase or alike.
Yeah once u add the card, buy an APP first so it goes through the system fine. After that you should be able to buy the Phone as long as you have enough balance in your acc.
what how did it work, i used my td visa debit to initially buy it didnt work, so used my moms credit card
This doesn't appear to me to have anything to do specifically with the Nexus 4.

Hi Peeps,
I tried to purchase a nexus 7 back on July 10th using my pre paid CC that I only put enough on to purchase the Nexus 7 and a bit extra just incase.
So google then emmidiatley did a Pre auth charge, that took all the money off my card in a pre paid state until it would ship and then take that money from the Pre auth they already tried to take (so I thought)
So I only had about 15$ left on my pre pay card because they pre authorized the charge, they then tried to charge me again when the unit was in stock to ship, but since they had taken the pre auth there was no extra money on the card to cover the cost of the unit.
Now today its been 2 weeks since the pre auth charge and my bank released the funds because google did not claim it.
My question now is , if I update my google wallet to say I have money on my card now, are they going to pre auth the charge again and then try and charge me late?r, making this same scenerio happen again and me be out of that money for another 2 weeks until the funds are relesed to me?
Thanks for any help, I emailed google about it last weekend but they have not responded (not shocked)
Not sure how that is going to turn out differently.

You would think since I was already Pre-authed once, and then charged, that they would just charge me once I have updated my google wallet. But you assume they would do another Pre auth charge again and not just charge me?
sigh.
Could just be an issue with the pre-orders. Now that they're actually selling the device it might just be a one time charge.
In the case of a pre-paid CC with a balance of close to the amount, it will most likely do the same thing. The card is not going to allow anything that could possibly cause the balance to be negative. While it looks like a credit card to the seller, it is a cash card to the buyer and only good for the amount they put on it.
Using a regular credit card would not have this issue. Same thing can happen when you use a Debit card without overdraft protection authorized.
I just got my replacement N7 today and when I was setting everything up I opened up the Google Wallet app and sure enough when it finished setting up my account it showed another $10 on my prepaid card. It's especially nice since i spent $8 and change from my first Wallet account filling up my Buell last night.
is your replacement device free of any issues. I'm about to return mine due to screen separation and death pixels

So far so good. I've only had it for 3 hours tho so we'll see how it goes but all seems good now.
Yea the money is linked to the NFC chip. It will reset back to $10 when you switch to a custom rom.
My Galaxy Nexus did this and I got $15 twice. I used the N7 to buy McDonald's and after switching to CM10, Wallet reset my balance to $10.
So if you play your cards right, you can maximize your gift cards.
I wouldn't try to take advantage of the process but I also won't turn away a free buck. My Galaxy Nexus and N7 have 2 different balances even though I use the same account. Why they don't limit it to one free gift card to any one account is beyond me. Google is smart so I'm assuming this was intentional.
They are trying to push their Wallet system so what better way to increase usage then to give people free money to use it with.

Actually, I first signed into my wife's account on the replacement and it gave her $25 to use then when I unlocked and rooted it I used my account like usual. I got my original and my replacement from gamestop so I don't know if it it work would or not on a unit straight from google.

Do the replacements usually come with another play store credit? I thought that play store credit was tied to your account and not per device?

It is tied to your account, but if you use a different account when first signing into your replacement, that account will get $25 credit. I used my wifes's account, signed in, she got the credit then I turned on usb debugging, then unlocked/rooted and signed in on my account.

I had my family buy a bunch of google play gift cards for my son for Christmas.
We've been purchasing apps without a problem until today. I went to purchase Greedy Spiders for $0.99 and I could not use the Google Play gift cards. The card was greyed out with a message right below the cards stating "This payment method has been declined.", but noting a balance of $12.05.
I called Google Play support and had to go through 3 calls and 6 support reps before one finally addressed the problem. The developer of the app is not allowing payment using Google Play gift cards. The developer of the app only accepts payment by credit card. This seems crazy to me. It's kinda like going to BestBuy and being unable to use BestBuy gift cards to buy a Sony TV because Sony only accepts credit card payment.
I'm not sure how many other developers are not accepting Google Play as a payment method, but I wanted to share the story.

yep. Aren't those gift cards supposed to help protect you from compromising your personal information online? ID theft is a pretty huge problem nowdays. I would be wary of doing business with that developer....
While I'm certain this vendor is the exception to the majority as I've had an Android phone for years and never experienced this, there will always be some vendors unless Google changes their policies to prevent developers from doing this. IMHO, I blame Google more than anyone. Google should not be providing developers the option to exclude Google Play gift cards when developers sell their products through the Google Play store.
I just came across this issue too but it seems to be for EVERY app or movie i have tried to download. I have a google play balance of $85 that seems to be utterly useless now! I need to do more research into this because this is just not acceptable and i feel extremely cheated. This is the first thread i came across so thought i would share my experience. If anyone has any input or an alternate reason as to why i can no longet use my play credit to make purchases i would be very interested to know.
Well with respect, Google Play is more like Amazon or EBay as such they allow anyone to write an app and publish it. And since Google is a world wide service, some countries may not or be able to accept that gift card service.
It happens but it is rare. We dealt with this with the initial $25 Play Store credit we got with our Nexus 7s. A very few developers wouldn't/couldn't accept the Gift Cards...
Or maybe it is a time factor. Maybe the listings have to be updated to accept gift cards?
I don't see a huge issue with this. I personally like the idea that devs can choose their method of choice.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
My problem with that is that i cant find a single app, movie, or song i can download with my play store balance. If there is NO devs that are going to accept gift cards as payment then Google needs to reimburse me for the money I already put out on their gift cards to download from their store which now seems to be completely void. If i knew i was going to be put in this position when i spent $150 on gift cards i would have never bought them. They claim on the card they are good for all purchases from the store apart from tangible products and when outside the US. I will be calling them tomorrow during business hours to bring this issue up.

I agree. When I got my N7, I had no problem using my $25. Seems fishy to me. It shouldn't matter if the money came from a gift card, green is green.
And I was just thinking about getting a gift card for the Play Store. After reading this though, maybe I should try something different.
Well now.. that is pretty retarded.
If your goal in writing an app is to harvest credit card information, it makes perfect sense.

Hi, I know it's a bit late but I have just found a SOLUTION to this problem. You can solve this by creating another Gmail account and using the same payment method as this problem is not related to the the payment method but the account as I have found. Go into Settings>Accounts>Add Account>Google>New. Then create a new Google account which will work alongside your present Google account and NOT replace it. Go to the Play store and swipe right across the screen and you will see a drop down menu from your present Google account going into the Google account you just made. Use this new account to purchase the application. The application will be downloaded to your phone hopefully without your "payment method being declined" .
First I've heard of sellers even getting that opton. It's not on my developer console. How would the developer know anyway? The income isn't broken down by method of payment. nothing related on the merchant account either.
I suspect a glitch rather than anything deliberate.

App writers never see credit card information. Only the payment processor (in this case google) does.

Yep. Works great.
Keep in mind though, that a lot of retailers may show the "Tap 'n Pay" symbol, but they don't have it enabled, so it won't work. Retailers such as Best Buy, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc., are trying to start their own service (CurrentC), and have disabled "Tap 'n Pay" as a result. So, you can't take the symbol as a guarantee that Google Wallet will work. However, when it does, it's awesome. Hopefully, these other retailers will come to their senses, and allow "Tap 'n Pay" on their terminals eventually, especially with all of the recent bad press about retailers getting hacked, and credit card information leaking. Google Wallet, as with any "Tap 'n Pay" system (like Apple Pay) doesn't actually give the retailers the credit card information, just a transaction code, so it's a LOT safer, and you should use it whenever it's available. CurrentC wants to pull directly from your checking (which is the whole point -- the retailers are tying to avoid credit card fees), will need your checking account routing information, and won't offer the MasterCard protection that comes with "Tap 'n Pay." Imagine how screwed you'd be if your CHECKING account information get's hacked!
Even if you don't use Google Wallet, you should feel free to download CurrentC (the app is on the Google Play store) long enough to give it a 1-star review. Let these retailers know that this isn't the best way to do business.

Just keep in mind that the Wallet card is a bit different than the app. While the app can directly pull from any credit/debit card that you have added to your Wallet account, the physical card will ONLY pull from your Google Wallet balance. It requires that you transfer funds from your checking account or credit card manually prior to any transaction, and if your Google Wallet balance is lower than the transaction amount, the transaction will be denied.
I have a physical Google Wallet card, which I ordered the day they were announced, thinking it'd work like the app. I was very disappointed to find out the above, and it's literally sitting on a shelf unused. I use the app exclusively. I simply never keep a Google Wallet balance, pulling directly from my debit/credit cards. The physical Wallet card is useless to me.
It works great on my Nexus 6! I love the look on people's faces when I psy with it because the Nexus is indeed a whale
Can't wait for all of this crap to settle out. (Disclosure: I work for a large financial company...trust me, you have heard of us and our credit cards...I don't work in the card division, though). I do not have a debit card...ATM card only. There is absolutely nothing to be gained for the consumer with any kind of debit transaction. No way I am giving Home Depot. etc. my checking account info to get set up on their system when I can just use a credit card. I am not going to give up points/miles/cash back and take on increased risk just so I can take my phone out of my pocket instead of my wallet. And we are still a long, long way from not needing a wallet (driver's license, medical insurance card, auto insurance card, AAA card, etc. etc.).
Heyo, I have a question for all you boys and girls. This is going to be my first un-rooted phone in a loooong time and now that I have the ability to use NFC payments, I was wondering which is best? I was doing some research and I read that Samsung Pay now sucks because they did away with the MST technology. I figure Samsung Pay would be easier to use because its a Samsung phone but a lot of people say they like Google Pay better. Which do you use? Have you used both, and how well do they do? What would you recommend? Thanks guysss
ps I added a poll up top!
I prefer Google Pay as it just works without any worries for me. Its actually the single reason I HAVENT used the 4.0 Beta.
I just feel Samsung's versions of apps to be clunky. I mean it could be my mind thinking it's still 2011 when TouchWiz got a lot of hate. The only Samsung app I use is the Phone Dialler. Apart from that, it's all Google for me!
Samsung Pay. For the added ability to use with my Watch 3.
Used Google Pay on old Pixel, a nightmare with pre charges and my bank. For example, taxi app pre charges the maximum fare of £20, when trip completes and final cost £15 = £15 charge of card and leaves the £20 pre charge which takes 7 days to clear on my bank. Also the new Google Pay app is worse than the previous one according to reviews.
so....I signed up for Samsung Pay today. It's alright, pretty convenient. However, when you scan your debit card it makes you put in your PIN to your card. This is just an extra step. Does anyone know if Google Pay avoids this? I've read mixed things about it online.

I've read so many things online but nothing is 100% accurate. I've now had some time to use it at many other stores and I've found out that if the payment terminal originally made me enter in a PIN with my card, Samsung Pay will do the same. If the terminal approves it without my PIN, than Samsung Pay wont make me enter in a PIN.
At this point I'm just gonna keep it for a backup incase I forget my wallet, but its not at the point where its so convenient for me to use Samsung Pay over my debit card. It's actually less convenient because I have to scan my finger into my phone before I can pay, and I don't have to do that with my debit card.
