Staples vs Walmart protection plan - Nexus 7 General

Hi everyone
I was wondering if any one had an opinion on protection plans.
I purchased my nexus from staples with a $55 accidental protection plan. I just saw that Walmart has a 2 year accidental plan for only $28
I am still in my 14 day return proof with staples and was wondering if purchasing the device and plan from Walmart would be a better deal for me
Does any one have any experience, good or bad using either of these plans?
Thanks

When do they start accidental coverage as office max doesn't start accident coverage until the manufacturers warranty has expired. So a crack in year one leaves you uncovered.

I guess having worked at Staples once, I would say neither... They are all overpriced really..

As someone who used to sell "replacement plans", they're basically one step above scams.

Not at the Best Buy I work for. But then again statwise were also one of the "best" Geek Squads in the entire company, and when stuff comes in under our extended and accidental damage warranties they get full service without question.
I just shipped off a Marines 2010 Macbook to our service center last night that took a three story fall in Afghanistan and literally "exploded" when it hit the pavement. Guess what hes getting in about a week? A brand new 2012 Macbook shipped directly to his door with no questions asked. Try getting Apple to do that for you.
Theres a reason we have the extra accidental damage plans and theyre not anything close to a scam. You need to pay close attention and read the terms of the plan. If you just buy a regular extended warranty, its just that. Its an extension of the same stuff the manufacturer covers, which doesnt include cracked screens, water damage, batteries/power supplies, etc. We replace stuff left and right every single day with ours. I cant even imagine how many shattered pieces of iCrap and other cellphones we replace in a year for people.

I ended up going with the Walmart plan. I just registered it online and confirmed that for 28$ I am covered from 11/25/2012-11/25/2014
Also confirmed that it covers from cracks spills drops outages surges and battery. Let's hope I don't have to use it.
How do I know what version I have c70/80 I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find it
Thanks for all your help

Not bad at all..

I do not know about staples. But Walmart took great care of my on a tv.. The tv had a popping issue about 13 months into owning the tv. It was Panasonic very nice tv.. After a cable box update the tv started popping when connected to hdmi cable. It would make the noise switching from a hdmi port to the tv apps like netflix.. Sometimes the tv would reboot.. Walmart replaced the board in the tv. It did not fix it . They refunded me all of my money.. Two days later the repair shop called tell me they found a fix. they told me where to download the firmware for the tv.. I did so.. Called Walmart back and was told to keep the tv and the money..
So thats my walmart warranty story.. I did go to walmart and buy a new tv and put that 50inch in my sons bedroom for his video games..
I have square trade warranty on my nexus...

I ALWAYS use SquareTrade to warranty any device I have...so easy to deal with & offer very fast turnarounds. Price would have been $29 for 2 yrs coverage & accidents.

I have walmarts ins. On my 7. Costed $28. They cover anything thats not covered by the manufacturer. Except theft or lost items. An if rite before the date it runs out if you break it an they dont carry that model anymore theyll just give you a gift card with the same value. Wich you can just use towards the next thing out at that time. Cant beat that. Also have it on my Vaio i bought there. Even the lady in electronics told me herself that i can just throw it against the wall rite before it expires an il get a fresh one or Credit for another one. Hahah

Eeyup, hit the nail on the head here. I also used to think that things like this were just a franchise's way of getting more money out of you. Then I saw the Black Tie *Now known as Geek Squad Protection (GSP)* in action, and was surprised at how effective it really is. As long as you don't drown your device or shoot it, they'll pretty much repair or replace the device. Sure, they're a little costly, varying from item to item, but well worth the buy if you have any doubts about how well the device will be taken care of.

Nexus 7 insurance

I'm starting this thread to discuss insurance possibilities to protect our beloved devices. Since there have been MANY reports of cracked screens due to the universal screen lift issue I figured it would be a good idea.
Im considering ZaggSafe

Best insurance is a replacement policy! Used squaretrade for mine. Even if I drop it and it breaks I get a new tablet. Costed like 60 I think.

I got the squaretrade warranty when it was discounted to $39. While I don't work for McDonald's (actually I did when I was a kid at $1.90hr way back when), it is still $250 and paying $39 to replace it regardless of what the reason is, it worth it to me.
Note that it is also transferable...if I see the device in a year to move up to something new, I can pass the warranty on to the new owner... adds value to the device for the new owner to ensure that if it craps out, they aren't out their money for a used device.
Personally, I think those warranties are not worth it. Then again, I've never dropped a tablet, laptop or even a phone before. (Knock on wood..err...Asus plastic)
Perhaps I'll change my mind now that I have a toddler running around, but 16-25% of the cost of the product isn't worth it to me, especially when all but accidental should be covered under manufacturer warranty anyway... and I get coverage through my credit card that doubles the manufacturer warranty.

Although I understand where you are coming from $39 to get my tablet replaced for anything stupid that I might do sounds like a great deal to me. I like you and have never dropped any phone, tablet, or laptop I have ever owned but the fact that if I do for any reason (Or my girlfriend, friends, parents, etc) happen to I get a new one no questions asked.

Under absolutely no circumstances does a low budget tablet justify a significant drop in quality control. Period. Done. Over. Fact.
To all Nexus 7 owners: I love my Nexus 7 like you cannot imagine. I would still recommend it to users. But I would absolutely have insurance on it. In fact I'm not sure I could recommend it without immediately recommending insurance for it in the same sentence... which really doesn't give credibility to how I feel about its build quality, but it is what it is. I was offered insurance and denied it. Two weeks later the screen cracked at some point when I was walking to my car, yet I never dropped it.

Yes it does, as long as you get the accidental policy.
The only thing it doesn't cover is lost or stolen devices.

Looks like I'm getting the coverage for $60.
I'm curious if you guys can clue me in on a little something about SquareTrade. I thought I read SOMEWHERE on the SquareTrade web site that this is only good for devices you've purchased within the last 30 days. Luckily I'm on day 28 (imagine that?) but I'm grabbing one right now. I do have to +1 ASUS, they claimed to have repaired my cracked screen and it's on a Fedex truck coming back to me now, but even still I want to grab a warranty to have handy in the event something does happen down the line.
That being said, I cannot find the 30 day thing any longer on the SquareTrade web site, but I did see a screenshot of a July deal where the warranties were on sale for like 15 bucks off the regular price, and right below I saw "only applicable to items bought in the last 30 days." Is the 30 day thing just applicable when you're buying an on-sale warranty?
Also, I put in 249 for the warranty and it came out to 50 bucks. But then I got to thinking, should I be rounding up? I re-did the quote for 250 and it jacked the price up 10 bucks. Does it matter? Should I be using 249 since that's the appropriate shelf price of the N7?
i bought mine with amex platinum and i think they double the warranty and offer replacenent, not sure how it works
i got reimbursed for dropping my macbook pro in the hot tub last time so i know they dont mess around

I just called SquareTrade. Their system works like this. With ebay purchased items, you have 30 days to get a warranty through SquareTrade. With retail purchased items (Best Buy, WalMart, Costco, any cellular store like Sprint, etc) you have 90 days.
So with me on day 28 having bought it at WalMart, I'm clear within the 90 day window to purchase the warranty. The only problem is with retail warranties I need to provide the receipt. I KNEW I had the receipt in the box, but the problem is I sent my N7 to ASUS for RMA. Even though it's getting fixed, I'd much rather not go through this fiasco again in the event it happens again, hence my interest in SquareTrade. I know I have the receipt somewhere, but I'm not sure where...
I wonder if WalMart will reprint me a receipt based on previous records??
Did anyone buy the Staples insurance?

$50 insurance for a $200 or even $250 tablet seems a bit excessive to me. Plus, there's a chance that, by the time it does break, the price would have been discounted or there'd be a newer tablet out anyway.
Everyone is different. For most people the warranty is excessive. I got it anyway. Fact is I can afford to buy a 40 warranty, but I can't afford another 250 bucks. If you can afford another 250 bucks, and your usually good with your electronics and don't have them around small children, it probably isn't worth it. But for me, the peace of mind is worth it.
Another big reason for buying it was the problems with the Nexus. I exchanged mine 3 times. The one I have now is good, but it's nice to know if something goes wrong I don't have to necessarily deal with Asus if I don't have to.
By the way, is it true that if you bought through the google store you can replace it through them for a year for warranty exchange, instead of Asus? Or was that just a rumor?

By the way, those of you who do plan on getting square trade, if you have 90 days take your time and try to find a coupon code or sale. I mistakenly thought it was only 30 days and rushed and bought mine with only 5 dollars off, whereas if I had waited a week they started that sale again for 10 dollars off the Nexus warranty. Which I was told I missed out on. Pisses me off, I should have called them and demanded the adjusted price....
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Personally I think the warranty is worth it. It'd be one thing if the warranty was 50% of the cost of the tablet, but no matter how you slice it, 50 bucks is significantly easier to eat than 250. Period. If I had gobs of money sitting around where I know I'll always be in a situation where I can drop 250 on a new tablet without flinching, yeah I'd pass on it. But I'm not in that scenario, so 50 bucks to help future proof myself for another 2 years is a huge :good: to me personally.
A tablet is a device that you'll likely be carrying a lot. It's a mobile device. It's not something that will frequently be in a backpack like my laptop, or in my pocket like a cell phone. To be quite honest, I think warranties on a tablet make more sense than anything else... with cell phones close behind, of course. Just my 2 cents though. I didn't purchase a SquareTrade warranty yet as I don't have my receipt since I bought other things that day at Wal-Mart and had to send in the receipt for a rebate on another item. Wal-Mart informed me they looked in their records and can pull up my old receipt for a re-print so I should be okay.
I don't really think the build quality of the Nexus 7 is something that scares me to the point of needing the warranty. If you Google search for iPad screen cracks and sift through the users who say they did nothing to cause the crack, you'll see just as many complaints with similar scenarios. I think it's important to acknowledge that tablets as a whole just might be more suseptible to accidental drops and whatnot. Based on that premise alone is why I'm getting the warranty.

Seriously, that's an insane amount. My homeowners insurance is only $600 for the year, and that covers a $250K home. What a racket. Spend money on a one year insurance policy, for an item that already has a one year manufacture warranty is just insane.

Worth Ave insurance quote AMAZING

I just called Worth Ave. If My wife takes 1 single online course. They will give her a college bundle discount with a $25 dollar deductible for up to 4K of insurance!!!!
For...drum rolllllllll.......
$110 a year. She just has to be enrolled first. Unreal. Best deal EVER.
Oh...and after the course is done...we can keep the bundle package as long as we don't let it lapse year to year after that.
4K of insurance (laptop, phone, camera, lens) accidental damage, or theft...for $110 a year.
Done deal. Better than home owners insurance even.
You are welcome.
Oh...normally it costs about 100 per 1K of insurance per year AND $50 deductible.
So..for $800 it is around $80 a year and a $50 dollar deductible (without the college bundle).

lol I suppose you can do that, but they specifically state they will not replace lost/stolen phones if "forced entry" is not apparent. (ie leaving it on your couch, or in an unlocked car). If your cars window is smashed, they will happily replace it if you file a police report haha. not sure your window will be worth it though.

Just called them. This applied to locking your car doors ONLY. Not anywhere else.
Lock your doors.
How much insurance do I need for my Note 2? I see on Sprint without an upgrade it costs $650. I'm guessing that amount?
EDIT: I can't buy anything more than $599 on a "cell phone". How do I get more?
EDIT 2: I called them. The most they offer on non-iphones is $599. So if you break your phone tomorrow, you'll have to pay the $50 deductible and then another $50 to buy the phone from Sprint. I'm guessing the price will go down eventually.

You can take a single online course and be allowed to have the insurance.
You purchase the insurance and choose the closest college to you. Then you call them up and tell them what online course you are doing. they told me they didn't care if it was for Photoshop...Lightroom..an Adobe product....or a pottery class. I'm not kidding.
I think this thread has ran its course, along with its sales man.

If this is legit, it is a great deal. Even though most homeowner policies do cover your mobile devices, you really never want to turn in a claim on that. I will be looking into this more, thanks for sharing!

Hey senior member. Do you see how long I have been in XDA? Do you see how many threads I have posted? My wife shattered her phone. Want to see a pic of it? Not everyone is a scam artist working for a company dude.

But don't troll in here assuming someone is trying to scam you just because they are discussing insurance for a PHONE unless you have something productive to offer..
Paranoid often?
Edit: I have renters insurance. Doesn't cover dropping your phone. And it has a $500 deductible. I know my stuff. I'm a research-a-holic.

So was the student quote you got to cover both you and your wife? I'm in the same boat as you, I want these things covered with a cheaper option than sprint is offering once I get my replacement.

Nexus 7 (Asus fail RMA)

Finally i got my Nexus 7 back after 3 weeks. You don't even know how happy i was to get it back. That is until i found it that they didn't repaired it. Well they did repaired my nexus 7 dc jack but they didn't repaired my screen. I was having major screen bleeding and i specifically told them to fix my screen and dc jack. They only fixed dc jacked but I just got off the phone with Asus and now i got to RMA it again... This is very very annoying but i hope that they actually fix it this time. There go 3 more weeks. I really love this tablet but it sucks that i can't use it for a total of 6 weeks since Asus fail on their repair.

Im surprised too but their quality control on devices sucks.
Well to be fair, it sucks, but about all mobile device manufacturers have crappy warranty service. Google does advance shipping on nexus devices that's why I bought my tablet straight from them. Wasn't crazy about the extra $14 to ship it but figured if I ever had a problem it would be less hassle then dealing with Asus.

Yea Google needs to setup some kind of advanced replacement for this stuff. Never have I ever had to send a device out for repair. Just send me a refurb, I'll send you mine, fix mine, and return it to someone else. Seems it would be better that way. Customers shouldn't be bothered with whatever happens behind the curtains...
I can understand laptop and PCs as those are a little more personal because of data and parts.

This is one of the things people forget about when they say Apple charges too much money. When you have a problem, you goto the Apple store, they'll hand you a 'new' device on the spot. Its usually a refurb, but if they don't have any refurbs, you get a new one. And if they don't have any new ones, you get an upgrade. My wife's iPhone 4 had an issue with the charging port. They had zero iPhone 4's in stock at the Apple store so they gave her a brand new 4S. Not a refurb, they opened a brand new box and handed it to her.
I'm surprised Samsung hasn't started doing this even if its a 'mini store' inside of places like Best Buy or the like.

That's why I got mine from Google too. I've gotten two replacements. Hardly any wait. They but a hold on my card, but I can understand why.

Yeah that's typically how advance shipping works. You typically require a credit card to use it, exception being a carriers warrant service, which is because they can just bill your account if they find the warranty to be void

Wow! Good to see people's nexus 7's get repaired. I sent mine back a few months ago. *I had screen lift* . They returned me a new nexus 7 as they said, and when i opened the box there was a nexus 7 with screen lift , and scratched screen + someone tried to open it so i have real bad scratches from the sides all sides. How nice. Paid 260 euros for a nexus 7 16 gb. For that money i could've had a 32GB 3G Nexus 7 . Well that is how my luck is .

Call and complain. The N7 also doesn't have any type of serial numbers hard coded on the back once the removable sticker is gone.
I'm not trying to be a **** but I would just buy a new one and make a switch/return as damaged.

A few weeks ago after light use, and most of that reading, I noticed an entire band of pixels lighter than the rest of the screen. Mind you, my Nexus was 3 weeks old and that was 3 weeks ago. Notified ASUS and quickly got an RMA. Sent it in, got it back, read the repair note *BATTERY BAD, REPLACED BATTERY*. Nope didn't even fix the screen, let alone touch it. It still has the same band of light pixels. I promptly emailed them back and am still waiting for a reply. I read so many mixed reviews about ASUS customer support that I dreaded sending it in. After my incident I understand why.
just received my nexus 7 after three weeks
let me tell you how happy I am to have it back, though they didn't fix one thing on my c9o. not the screen flicker nor the charging issues..nothing.
on the paper had said found nothing wrong. also they stole my charger...it was written in the report that I was going to send that in as well and wrote on the paper inside the box.
this was Texas facility
I called then where's my charger..they opened a case for me, said were going to put me on hold to speak to manager, stayed on for 15mins then they hung up on me.
yo. **** you Asus I swear

Helps to be near an Apple store for that. I had the awful luck to be at school (with no means to the nearest Apple store before my warranty ran out) when my trackpad went nuts two days before warranty's end. Now I live next to one but I'm past warranty. And as the student manager for our college helpdesk, Apple makes mail-ins absolutely awful unless you're willing to argue.
That said, done and done on their in-store support. But Apple's got the on-the-ground presence to do that sort of thing. If Google made their own retail shops, I would be a happy person indeed.
...but what would you call them? I think it's Microsoft's Experts, Apple's Geniouses, and Google's...I dunno, kNow-ers?

Anybody Else Buy Their HTC One at Best Buy?

I am extremely happy I got the phone yesterday after pre-ordering on the 5th, but Best Buy really left a sour taste in my mouth. First off, they did not recognize my entry in their "Phone Freedom" program which offered a $50 gift card if you bought a phone through them within the year. The stupid thing is, they said that they couldn't find my email address in the system, yet I only started getting emails about their specials after I signed up for that promotion. That made me pretty unhappy. I even signed up twice for the promotion a few days apart since I thought it was so strange that I didn't get a confirmation email the first time. After I didn't get it the second time, I just assumed that they weren't sending out confirmations (Strange, but I didn't think it just wouldn't work twice in a row).
The next thing was that it is plastered all over the walls in the mobile section of their store that they price match and have a low-price guarantee; yet they only price match phones that are purchased off contract. That might be common place on this forum with phone fanatics, but out in the real world (in the US at least) most phones are purchased with a contract. Saying that they price match "any deal" and then ruling out 90%(Edit: I guess I was a little optimistic, 66%) of phone purchases doesn't really seem like fair advertising to me.
Has anyone else purchased their One at Best Buy? Did you get your gift card if you signed up for the Phone Freedom program? The cashier said that it was a very common problem, and that it only really worked if you went in store to sign up, and that the online entry didn't really work.
I love the phone. I can not believe how much better it feels compared to my aging E4GT, but I wish I had a better purchasing experience.
When I signed up online for the "phone freedom", I did get a confirmation email and I made sure to save it. When I upgraded my phone last year, I also made sure to take a hard copy of the email with me just in case. Good thing too because their system was down and the only way they were willing to give me that discount was if I could show them the confirmation email (which I did). After that, the manager adjusted the price by $50. When I upgrade to the HTC One (as soon as the black version is available), I am definitely going to be sure to take a copy of the new confirmation email I got from BB when I signed up again earlier this year.
The price match policy actually really just depends on particular stores and what policies they know and abide by.
Best Buy's policy most recently changed on 3/3/2013 to exclude contract mobile from price matches. However some stores will still recognize and offer price matches to brick and mortar stores for contract phones, which was their old policy. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a brick and mortar store that had a price less than $199.99 when I went to my local BB.

yes i got mine no issue pre ordered the 6th i love the phone
I did the pre order there and I also got my confirmation for the $50 gift card from the freedom program, Also I did my research where to order the phone and I knew they changed the price match policies to be able to match online retailers but excludes on contract cell phones. I guess they did because amazon prices their smartphones dirty cheap after a few months(With a new line).
I know its a little off topic but does anyone know if Best Buy's Black Tie program is any good? I'm pretty sure they tried to make you buy it if you bought the phone. When I bought my iPhone they made it seem that I could destroy the thing and get a new one free of charge for only $10 a month. I'm thinking of getting insurance for my One when I get it because I don't want to get a case and hide its premium feel. I heard it doesn't hold up against scratches and drops too well :c?

I brought their insurance for my daughter's Note II back in november and I got it for my One, is cheaper if you buy the 2 years in advance $169 vs $240($10 * 24 months) + taxes. So far the only claim I have done is for the Note's charger, my daughter somehow pulled the plastic tubing that covers the charging cable close to the USB plug, We went to best buy and they order me an new whole charger( charger box+ cable) and they let me keep the charger box. I read the fine print and it covers damage accessories(included with phone) for 1 time replacement. The only thing that doesn't cover is if the phone is lost or stolen with $0 deductible.
Also if you decide to get the black tie insurance as a bonus, when is time to upgrade to a new phone they have trade-in plus, They will give you 100% the value of your phone at the time of trade-in plus a $50 gift card.
I do indeed have best buys insurance and am very happy with it. I got it with my Galaxy S2 and a month after I got the phone I dropped it on concrete and cracked the screen all up.
I went to best buy and told them what happened. They said they had to send it off and offered me a temp rental phone to hold me over ($50 charge that they refund when you return it undamaged). I took the rental and like a week later I went back and they said the damage to the casing was too bad (it was scraped up on the side badly) and it was unrepairable so they gave me a new phone.
I gave them back the rental, got my $50 back, and went home with a new phone. Very good experience, and so far it was my only claim.

They screwed me out of mine also because they claimed I used the wrong area code when I registered. I *****ed but to know avail, I'm going to call corporate on Monday.
Even if by some chance I did , they should honor it. I love the phone also.
To the other posters I bought my insurance for $90 from SquareTrade. It typically costs about about $40 more but I get coupons all the time for being a customer. It covers all defects and drops and spills.
Only have a $100 deductible but that's ok.

The did not find my freedom $50 either. They called someone and they emailed me a $50 giftcard. The put the free zagg on (fo free) as we waited. (I'm ready to take it off, as it sucks IMO) then she tried to sell me on a case. I already had a cruzerlite with me. She left the case on the counter. She put my phone and zagg case in on top of it. As she bagged everything she grabbed the case too. It took over an hour to get it all set up but I got the phone and some freebies.

I ended up calling corporate yesterday, and they were saying I may have signed up in the wrong place... I followed their email in February for the promotion. Anyway, the guy said he was trying to figure something out right before the line was disconnected. Bah. I'll just call back tomorrow. I will say, the customer service people were extremely nice.

Bought two from Best Buy had great experience. Only thing was they were unaware of free screensaver's and had to go back.
Posted this Friday.
First at Sprint Store this morning I purchased 3 accessories and got half price (they looked at me weird because I didn't have phones yet). Then at Best Buy I traded one of my htc evo LTE got a hundred dollars for it, the other goes to my daughter. Plus I am sending two htc EVO Design's back for a hundred dollars a piece from the preregister I did with HTC. Also was able to do buy out through Sprint at $150 which is half the price they originally wanted so I upgraded both lines, instead of just one and paying outright price for other. Then to top it all off Best Buy gave me two extra gift cards $50 each to price match Radio Shack preorder (play store gift cards) even though they weren't supposed to!

I went to Best Buy on Friday to pre-order both the HTC One and a GS4 (not knowing the One came out that day). The pre order process was easy going and the lady that helped my wife and I was very pleasant. We left an about an hour later got a call that the HTC One had arrived and was ready for us to pick it up. I went back to pick it up and after waiting about 10 mins for the other customers to finish was given great service in my opinion. There were no issues with anything and didnt even have an issue with the e-mail promo some of you did. I also got a Zagg HD screen protector and Pt Case for it and love them both. Also very excited to use the warranty on the Zagg. I also did switch over to the Best Buy insurance since I had to replace my GS3 through insurance not to long ago due to a crack and wasn't to happy about the 150 deductible. I have heard good things about Best Buy's insurance so I hope if I use it, it goes well.
So overall my experience was good and will be going back to Best Buy to buy my phone from now on. Also excited to see what i get for the HTC One in two years since they will give me %100 of the worth plus $50. Sorry to hear about some of yours bad luck but hope all goes well again when I pick up my GS4 this Friday.
Best buy freaking sucks man. I bought a Zagg and then paid for them to install it. 6 tries later and all seems well. Until I get to the car and realize theres 5 spots because of the fuzzies rubbing off of the cleaning cloth. Oh. Its 7pm and we're closing sir. Please come back tomorrow. Not to mention 3 of the 6 Zaggs they used, they tried to charge me for.

Repair Experience

The purpouse for this thread is purely informational to see what other peoples experiences have been in the repair process involving LG
I am not really looking for stories of how LG (or Google) simply replaced your phone, but rather out of warranty cases, what you had to do, how much it might have cost out of pocket and for what repaired.
This is so others like my self know what to possibly expect.
My story:
I picked up this phone on Craigslist for $30 already knowing it was bricked, in hopes that I might be able to reserect it. upon finding out (after money was exchanged) that it was done not just while trying to root but that he believes that the wrong file was used when his "friend" was trying to do it i realized that it was probably the wrong boot loader so many have loaded by mistake. After figuring out my only solution based on my research was probably a JTAG service I decided to give LG a call, and told them what was up. asked if I could send it it and get a quote to re-flash it. unfortunately when i got it the rear glass was already cracked and i was upfront about this. upon inspection they said they wanted to replace the entire housing including the LCD as well as the main board. I was unable to get further details as to what was wrong with the board, but they only wanted to replace the LCD due to a scratch on the front. I tried to just have them replaced the board but it was an all or nothing deal. Soooo... not having $181 laying around for basically a new phone with my old battery I had them ship it back.
Additional Information: upon having my unit shipped back to me I discovered it to be shipped back with no padding other then the shipping invoice in the very thin box and a non-padded plastic envelope. I contacted LG as I was concerned about additional damage to my phone that I might not be able to determine till such time as I might be able to send it back when i can afford the repairs they informed me this was standard shipping whether my phone was repaired or not, I told them the box had been crushed on one side and I was told they would make a note and send it to their service center so a change in packaging could be made if it was deemed appropriate.
Parts LG would like to have replaced for the aforementioned $181 (USD):
Battery cover (with glass)
Mainboard
LCD (including digitizer and front glass assembly)
LCD replaced, $140 total.

Only 40$ more and they include a new mainboard? Sounds cheap.
I won't hesitate paying 180 and get a totally new phone. You can always sell it after and earn some dollars, considering you just payed 30 for it. It's your only solution, buying a mainboard and a screen would be much more expensive.

So you paid $30 for the phone and for $181 ($211 total) you will essentially have a brand new n4? Outside of the shoddy return packaging I see no issue with this.
To be honest though, if you can't afford a $180 repair bill you have other priorities that need addressing just sell the phone for a profit (you'll get alot more than $30 on ebay.)

Maybe, but for a phone with broken glass and mainboard, you can only use battery and some other components which not usually break. Will be impress if you get more than 50-60 dollars and then discounting what PayPal and eBay charges...
I'm really impress they only charge you 180 for a full fix. If I were you I will just wait until I get the money, then fix it and sell it.
As of my experience, I had my screen replaced by LG due to a white pixel, (didn't have RMA choice). They did not charge for it and sent it back in 4 working days.

I do recognize the value here. trust me . I plan on getting it repaired as soon as I have funds as I would love to be able to use it. Just have to sell my spare phone (Atrix HD) first. At the end of the day, the only real complaint I have is that the LG service center has an all or nothing policy. The rear glass is broken (i have a nice TPU case that hides it) the LCD and digitizer is fine, just has a scratch on the screen (I can deal ith that), I just want the Mainboard replaced but they will either do all of it or none of it. I understand why, they want to guarantee their product. just a bummer for those that might not have quite that much cash on hand for such things.

I actually think they are not charging for the main board, that will explain the price. If it hasn't got any signs of physical damage they usually repair it free of charge. I had my Gnex main board replaced after a sudden death having no warranty, bills or anything.

Trust me I tried every thing I could. I ended up selling another phone I has lying around and shipped my N4 off for repair. Should be back by next week. according to the invoice they are replacing basically everything but the battery. Looking forward to having it back
Attached is the form from LG, with the personal info changed of course.
LG recieved mine on the 22nd and charged me 140 to fix it . . still haven't received it back or anything haven't even heard from them since they called me telling me the LCD is damaged I'm just hoping i get it back by saturday.. I didn't get a detailed email from them or anything either but i noticed it took them 9 days to send you one so i guess patience is the key.
So I just got mine back and there's a yellow blob on the screen and its really annoying what do I do ? Call Google for an RMA or call LG again

If you received it back from LG for service I would call LG again.
Back and good as new.
I have received back my N4 from service. had to call 3 times to figure out what was going on since there is no reliable way to check online. was told on Wednesday to call back on Friday to get and update and hopefully tracking information. then received an email stating it had been shipped on Thursday. It was shipped back 2 day service (FedEx) and got it on Saturday. I have all ready rooted it and got it up and going. It looks new from top to bottom. over all I am pretty happy with the service turn around time. But (recognizing I am a bit impatient) I felt like I had to be more involved with keeping up with what was going on then I would have cared to. Status updates are important to me when it comes to such expensive items.
