what is sleep2wake? - HTC Incredible S

Hi all,
I know this is probably a very noob-ish question, but can someone tell me exactly what sleep2wake (S2W) is and what the benefits of it are? I've seen several references to it on the forums and I've seen a few posts mentioning that it can have a negative effect on battery life, but I haven't come across any mention of it's real purpose.
Thanks

actually s2w mean swipe to wake. search in this forum about kernel.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using Tapatalk 2

It's a function from a custom kernel that allows you to swipe your capacitive buttons to wake or lock your phone. Basically functions like your power button.

Ahh, I got it now. Thanks to you both for the info. I was a little confused. l0st.prophet referred to it as sleep2wake in this post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30901781&postcount=351 . I guess he meant swipe2wake?
Anyhoo, doesn't sound like something I'd really need anyway, especially if it affects battery life noticeably.
Thanks again for the info

Yes it's Swipe2wake, can also swipe to sleep . Anyway yes I would disable it if you use redux kernel as it's enabled by default, the battery drain is noticable.

le sweep 2 wake.

What determines how fast the phone wakes?

I'm running CM7 stock and I have very inconsistent wake times. Sometimes I'll wipe and flash CM7 and wake from sleep is instant. Sometimes it's a full second.
This doesn't seem tied to CPU speed or governor (I've tried several options with no effect).
What's the best way to ensure wake is instant?

Simple answer: because the people here know the answer and it very much relates to kernels and how they handle sleep/wake.
Longer answer is I don't know how to move it now that I've posted it.
(Yes, I'm fully aware the longer answer is shorter...)
I have the same issue. I have found that the NEO kernel 18 on nightly 181 has relatively consistent wakes though it still is often over a full second. Worse if you have had your phone in sleep for longer periods of time, I imagine it has to do with deep sleep.
For some reason it seems that pressing volume down and power button often wakes up the phone instantly (if it puts the phone into mute or ring mode) but this method is not very consistent. If my phone is connected to power, it wakes up instantly.
I have also tried different governors and overclocking including putting the phone at minimum 200Mhz but it still wasn't consistent.
Flashing a stock Gingerbread Samsung ROM does have instant wake-up. I haven't tried flashing older CM7 Nightlies to see fi the issue emergers at an specific point, but not unlike you it seems to be a recent issue with me somewhere in the ~170s nightlies.
I'm finding I get fairly consistent instant wake with Glitch's V13 kernel (even with max 800mHz to save battery).
Just wondering what the method is behind the madness.
I don't think it would be an app as freshly flashed still shows the problem. Ill try that kernel see how I go with it.

This is a very good question, and something that has bothered me about the Galaxy S for a very long time. HTC devices snap on instantly when you hit the button regardless of how long it's been off, but the SGS takes an annoyingly long time to wake up most of the time.
That said, these folks are right, this doesn't really belong in *development* unless we are investigating the cause at a lower level or working on a solution.

This is directly relevant to the development of SGS roms and kernels and we're attempting to discuss the problem and possible resolutions - I am hoping for a "low level" answer regarding the scheduler in use, perhaps. However obviously some disagree, so I'm happy to move it, but I have no idea how.

well, afaik this is a bug in latest cm7 nightly, i am running older cm7 nightly, mintberry crunch miui and super osr and my wake is instant.
Among other things maybe, it has to do with the voltage set at sleep mode... i think.
Notice how it wakes up instantly when the charger is plugged in..
Those interested could use setvcell to change the voltage at the lowest speed for the sake of experimenting.. but do give us your feedback please.

Quick settings effing sucks

Google dropped the ball on this one. First, no gps button. Second, the buttons that do exist only take you to a menu (ie, the wifi menu) from where you can actually turn things on or off. Also, apparently no ability to customize whats in the quick settings.
With all the great implementations of quick settings available in both custom roms and widgets, google had a lot of great ideas from which it could have modeled its own quick settings, but somehow it managed to put out this worthless piece of garbage. I think most people will have to keep using widgetsoid or notification toggle and google's quick setting will almost never be used. What a disgrace.

The kind of people who want to badly customize it, is also the kind of people who do not need settings to do it.
I'm fine with it, if anything it'll probably only take the CM team a few minutes to change the functionality of it.

I agree. If anything, it gives a new platform/base for CM or other developers to build upon and a pretty spiffy one at that. I think it's a great first release for a feature. Just because you can see the future of it in current roms or inherently tell where it's going doesn't mean it shouldn't be a welcomed improvement. Could they have made it better? Of course, but that's not a reason to overreact and call it a "disgrace".
Yeah, I don't know what they're thinking. The buttons should obviously be toggles for quickly turning things on and off, not shortcuts to various settings menus. That's what the regular settings button in the notification shade is for. I was really excited when I first heard about this feature, since I expected Google to do the logical thing and put a bunch of useful toggles in there, but what they've ended up doing seems pretty pointless to me.

A great first release? I think it's a horrid first release. It takes as many clicks to turn wifi on or off in this implementation as it does under the current ics or jelly bean 4.1 without the so-called quick settings. Moreover, this is hardly a new feature. It has been around in roms and widgets literally for years. People want one-touch access to the most commonly used settings, and this so-called quick settings fails to provide that. And who the heck made the decision not to put gps in there?
Even as a first release, Google should have surveyed what is currently out there and tried to make its implementation at least as useful. I think it utterly failed. If you don't, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Thank you... I am not sure how anyone could disagree. Yeah, the two fingers to swipe down is cool, and maybe people think it looks nifty, but functionality is nearly nonexistent. And isn't functionality what android users demand first and foremost? If I want a beautiful but useless user interface, I'll look to apple.

Do like me, ignore them and hope CM will keep what they are doing best...
I liked the idea of swiping twice to bring a second notification shade down. But yeah, them just linking to settings pages sucks a little. The ideal setting is to tap to toggle or hold to dive in and change settings in detail.
Ever since I found about about most settings just directing you to the appropriate settings menu, I was also disappointed.
The only proper toggle I think there is brightness, it brings up a little popup in the middle of the screen with a slider.
google's probably going to update it soon
Keep your opinions in here

show me your tweaked display

anyone mind showing me a picture of your stock display and then a picture of the display after tweaking color/gamma/multiplier settings for comparison? i want to see how much better the screen can look or are we stuck with a "washed out" display because i was told the tweaks can bring vibrancy similar to AMOLED?
Coming from an s3 I'm happy with a more natural time myself

Yeah it is a huge difference but the only way to really tell is to try it out yourself. Personally when I got the N4 I was quite happy with the display coming from an HD2 but once I flashed PA (with the halfbreed calibrated kernel) I realised just how awful the stock calibration was.

take your pick, you need a custom kernel that supports it though... as I linked both faux's kernel and franco's kernel support it.

also you'd have to tweak it by hand to get it how you like it, but franco's updater app includes presets if you're lazy. i'm unsure if any of the others have presets.

Yeah, you searched so well that you are pointing me an app that doesn't answers my question at all  I DID search before posting and I didn't find anything. Now I'm not even sure that you know what sweep2wake is. For anyone who don't know, s2w is a KERNEL feautre, so developers have to implement this. Only rooted nexus devices can add this as an app but they are the only exception (see PGM app in play store). This feature allows you to make a swipe on your screen *while it is off* (is kept on only the digitalizer and if you don't touch the screen, you won't have battery drain) to turn it on and vice versa. It's useful especially on big screens where reaching on/off buttons is not easy. About all HTC phones has it (even desire x, not an hi-end device), Sony xperia z and many other devices join day after day. LG g2 has this feature out of the box (OK, it's a double tap to wake, more than a sweep, but the way it works is the same, changes only the gesture).
And I checked all the 4x kernels out there, but didn't find this feature listed. And I'm asking why, since 4x has the same SoC of HTC one x, so it couldn't be so hard..
Sorry not to be the little lazy noob that you expected.

Did you bother reading the threads that had previously been created in the 4X forums which discussed Sweep2Wake? I searched for them and found that link which is why I posted it.
The reason I didn't research that app properly is because I have absolutely zero interest in this feature but as there were several threads discvered by searching -- one of which included my posting this on the 18th December last year
On the old HTC Desire S we had "Sweep2Wake" - but that requires kernel modifications AFAIK. Maybe something for the future as it was quite a nice feature, and I don't like using physical buttons to wake my phone as it wears them out too quickly.

so I would suggest that I am well aware exactly what S2W is and what it does
You would also have discovered that one of our key developers @laufersteppenwolf has looked at implementing this feature in Werewolf (both Kernel & ROM) but isn't sure due to the battery drain used in keeping the digitiser on all the time.
So, are you still going to claim you actually bothered to search properly?

Actually, you can turn Battery Saver mode on at any time. Problem is that you have to deal with those garish orange bars on the top and bottom, and it'll disable vibration, ambient display, and most background data (i.e. no more push emails or app notifications). It also throttles the processor and disables animations, so Battery Saver mode is not an ideal solution for all-day use.
Reining in bad apps is the best way to maximize battery life. Either uninstall/disable bad apps, or prevent them from burning through your phone's battery through Greenify.

Ah you're right. I was referring to automatic battery saver. I would rather tweak battery using Franco kernels per app mode which enables profiles on performance based on what app is being used in the background.
In my opinion, battery saver isnt very good. It cripples your phone to the point where you're not using your phone since so many features are disabled. It's good for having the essentials like texting and calling but other than that there are better ways to get the most out of the battery

In my opinion, battery saver isnt very good. It cripples your phone to the point where you're not using your phone since so many features are disabled. It's good for having the essentials like texting and calling but other than that there are better ways to get the most out of the battery

I concur, that's why it's only useful when you're down to 10-15% of battery life so you can get an extra hour or so, which could be useful in cases where you need to be able to call/text but you're not able to get to a charger.
