I've rooted my G1 and have tried several different roms including SuperD and others that claim to be the fastest. Within minutes of flashing the rom my phone starts to slow waaaaay down. Moving from open apps to the home screen gives me the black screen for a good 7 or 8 seconds and another 5 seconds later my icons show up. Even going into the dialer does this. I kill all open apps every few minutes to clear up memory but it's still extremely slow. Is there something I did wrong when I rooted or am I just unlucky in my choices of roms?
Is there a way to run the stock rom on a rooted phone? I never seemed to have this many speed issues before I rooted...

Root doesn't slow you down, the specific build does.
If you want to run a stock rom on your phone, I suggest the one available at developer.htc.com/adp.html.... which has root, just restricted (for your safety) to adb connections, i.e. only the "shell" user has the right to "su".
By build are you referring to the ROM? or the SPL? I'm relatively new to this if you haven't noticed
So what would be a good build that doesn't have restrictions and doesn't bog my phone down? Do I need to just start over?

SPL is just an SPL. It has absolutely no effect on performance whatsoever. Its job is literally OVER as soon as the linux kernel takes control.
Just like the BIOS in your computer.
As for what build to run, OEM tends to be pretty lean and performs fairly consistently. Some of the community builds are very powerful, but tend to get BLOATED and slow. Cyanogen is an example of this (and typically everything based on it). Not to say that there is anything wrong with that, just a different characteristic.
You need to look at different builds that are available, and maybe try a few, and decide what you like best.
Go in to Spare Parts and enable "Launcher in memory." This should fix the home screen lag. If you're fine sticking with 1.6 roms, Super D is a solid and very fast option.

Try enomther's "theofficial" builds.. they're based off stock but with loads of config options.
Moved to the Q&A section.
well...ive run quite a few roms....i had cyanogenmod 4.2.15 n was happy with that...i would enable compcache and enable the home in memory option....
i tried super d also and liked it...i tried super csdi or something like that and liked it but it started lagging on me....kept it for a while n went back to cm
now im on cm 5.0.8 and im pretty happy with it....i have it overclocked to 576mhz, have home in memory and compcache enabled...my only problem with it is that i miss using snap photo...images come out all garbled for preview....
i tried the hero roms and i didnt like the lag on them...look nice but i prefer performance over looks
Hi, my question is simple but the answer could be an entire book...
Since we can no longer trust Motorola and their crappy customer care (don't want to waste time to say those things again, all of you know what I'm talking about )
I had a look over the Internet to understand which ROM is suitable for an upgrade, but now I am confused :
there are a lot of ROMs out there, and I don't have time to test each one (more, I have only this phone, if I brick it, or block it due to an unusable ROM I have to fix it asap.).
Is there a fully working unofficial ROM with a better performance than the stock one? (with flash and app2sd?)
I understand that the locked bootloader isn't helping on this, but I'm interested in the full features of my smartphone: if camera doesn't work for example, for me it's a shame (either if everything else works flawless..).
I am root already if that can help...
Thank you in advance
Pol.

Bro, try shadowmod b3,
I have used froyomod, cm6, hobomod and shadowmod,
I can undoubtedly say that shawdowmod b3 is the best one,
Advantage:
OK battery life, never lag, stable
Disadvantages:
Aggressive autokill
(but would not affect music player, doesn't matter to me)
SMS notification light doesn't work
Sent from my A853 using XDA App
be experimental
its a question of what u personally prefer...
aesthetic appeal,lag,bugs gotta be considered..
i use the beta CM6.1.2 milestone port...
its a lill(very lil) laggy but everythin seems to work flawlessly
plus the cpu is overclocked to 900mhz. which is favourable
try diff roms and choose ... but be sure to make a backup of what u already have
I am using for about two weeks ShadowMod B3 and I'm pretty satisfied with it.
Pros :
- fast ;
- ~stable ;
- no battery problems (1d and ~15 hours - moderate use).
Cons :
- can't listen music and play in the same time (player is killed) ;
- some problems with the gallery and with the camera (specially when pressing the camera button) ;
- about ~3 restarts per week (surely the problem is the ROM and not my OC).
BTW , my SMS notification works (green light blinking). :-?
Comparing this to what I've already used (stock Eclair , CM 6.1.2), this is pretty cool, but it would be much nicer is the agressive autokill could be removed.
Thank you for your answers
I saw an outstanding performance of Quadrant on a shadowmodded milestone on Youtube, but I am worried by those bugs: as I can see there are different bugs on different milestones (how is it possible? aren't they sharing the same hardware? )
What do you mean with "Aggressive Autokill"? No multitasking?
while the cons mentioned by Abazel are not reassuring
The little lags on CM are the only issues? I read somewhere that you can no longer mount the SD card via USB and that there are some problems with camera too.
How about random reboots with this ROM?
Thank you again
Pol.
CM 6.1.2 was pretty stable for me but I was a bit laggy (not very much and was ~the single problem I found). ShadowMod b3 it's a bit weird - it works downloading and playing something at the same time but I can't listen to music and play simultaneously - the player is killed => the music starts singing => stops again (thing which could have been done easily under CM 6.1.2). These days I am encountering several problems (restarts or freeze at "Gallery"). I don't know what is the problem. With the SD card i don't have any issues at all... works fine for me. So, if you want improved stability, go for CyanogenMod 6.1.2. If you want a "bumpy ride" , try ShadowMod. ) Have a nice day!
Thank you,
I assume that these are the two best options.
I wonder if CM7 is already stable enough or if it's better to use CM6 since it's already stable.
BTW I believe that ****ijsood is right, I have to be experimental. Just need to find some spare time to waste on this...
Yep, the main problem of shadowmod b3 is the aggressive autokill,
Because of this feature, the phone never lag.
Some think that this autokill is disturbing coz they are used to listening to music and at the same time play game.
But as I never do that, this autokill wouldn't disturb me.....
As this phone has limited ram, there is always a tradeoff....
I am not saying that cm6 is not good. It has the best features and widgets.
But I just cannot stand the laggy feeling
If the Autokill would affect only "heavy" apps like games and music players, maybe it's not so bad.
I think I'll give Shadowmod a try, I can always change again if I find it too buggy.
Thank you for your answers
polengo, or others, sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I was wondering if there are any 'improved" ROMS out there now for the MM1.
I recently acquired a Milestone (3-4 months) running Eclair and it's been kind of quirky. Random freezes, random reboots, laggy, when bluetooth or headphone is disconnected the music player starts on its own. Battery life has been quite good stock, with light to moderate use.
Thanks.
Cm7 for me has been the best. I have had one random reboot in the past couple weeks. runs smooth, and the battery life is as good as any other rom ive tried.
Well, right now, I think the best rom around is latest CM7 or HONOmod. Although, you might want to give a try to CM6 or Luca's froyomod, if you need an extra piece of ram. The only drawback with froyo based roms right now is the lack of active development. You have to face that MM1 is an old piece of hardware right now!
Enviado desde mi Milestone usando Tapatalk
The CM9 Alpha runs quiet smooth.
I use it in my daily life.
Trying to install HO!NO! using clockworkmod and keep getting (error 7). I am not seeing this error with other roms. I tried toggling the signature verification and that only pushed the error back a few more seconds. Should I move the file out of openrecovery directory and place it in the nandroid directory and ask Nandroid to perform a backup using the HO!NO! zip file? In other words, should I use your zip as a backup and not as a rom? I look forward to checking your ROM out. The buzz is pretty exciting. Thanks.
**Edit**
My bad, wrong thread. please delete.
I have the 16GB Vodafone UK Galaxy S. Today I was in a city trying to use satnav and it was rank rotten. So I thought I'd see if an upgrade would do it. I was using the very first Froyo that Vodafone came out with - I upgraded to that and hadn't upgraded since. I did have it rooted and 1 click lag fix was on it.
I upgraded to Gingerbread just there, sadly I had to do a factory reset, however it's all working.
I have realised that if I am going to put a custom firmware on it then now is just the right time to do it.
Is there one out there that's stable, and an improvement over the Gingerbread I'm using? Particularly I'd like it to fix the lag (if that still needs fixed) and even better would be fixing GPS/Satnav.
Pinpong blockbuster rom - ticks all your boxes. Get faster fix from market.
Your gps will never be 100% satisfactory in the city, in fact it will probably always be poor - no matter what custom rom you use.

Have you think about CM7? Great Rom, works well on my phone, and add many new things.
Hi Mate, I tried many custom roms and finally settled for
(ROM)GingerCriskeloV77-9LS-CamHack- SIP + NoIncRing I9000/T/M JVP 2.3.4
Cheers
Well, I managed to get it on. Booting up is weird though, it looks for a long time as if the screen is broken, but eventually ti comes on to the Blockbuster lock screen and then everything is fine. It does seem faster - but I'll only really know when I get to one of those situations where I feel the phone is frustratingly slow.
Thanks very much Woolf!
Time allowing I'll give the other roms a shot, although this Blockbuster one does seem to be good enough for me.
Sadly my phone now reboots constantly. it seems to do it when the screen locks

Check you got the installation right for that rom, maybe you had to flash a jvp stock first or some similar omission?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Sorry to hear you're having issues. Try flashing to a totally stock JVQ first (with repartition) once you've backed up, then if you don't like that, try a custom ROM. I don't think many JVQ custom ROMs are worth trying if you want a taste of custom ROMs. Better to try CM7 or MIUI for something fast and different.
As a side note, the best tip I've seen for fixing the dreadful GPS we have with the i9000 is to buy a Nexus S or just ANY other phone! Yes, some radios appear better than others, but nobody can prove anything and it's almost all subjective feedback. A drop in the ocean of improvement needed for satisfactory function. If you must use it, a bluetooth GPS receiver and 3rd party navigation app seem the best way to deal with it.
I've now stepped away from Blockbuster. Even doing the a perfect install it crashed often and repeatedly. I did try upgrading to the very latest and that crashed several times in the past hour. Part of the problem was the rom starts with a lockscreen that has a messaging unlock on it, but it isn't set to an app that comes with the rom, so it reboots every time. Sadly that wasn't the only problem, as I was still getting loads of reboots.
So that's out of the way.
I'm now a lot more comfortable using Odin so I'll be able to try other options. I'll try the other two suggested in this thread first of all.
Next to test is CM7.
Thanks for the help folks!
CM7 aborted. Instructions are incorrect, the file they say to download doesn't actually match the instructions so that's out. Plus it clearly states it's not suitable for day to day use... so I don't thnk the time in working out how to fix it is justified since it looks like it wouldn't be useful.
I'm going back to the original question in the thread, to say that I'm looking for something stable. I now think that a custom rom is not the way to go. However some modifications may well be.
Can anyone suggest some kind of lagfix/speedup that isn't a complete overhaul like CM7, Blockbuster etc, that is very stable and that'll make my phone faster?
Edit : Part of what I was doing to install Blockbuster was install Speedmod kernel. So I've gone and put that on, and used the clockwork mod to root it, and also convert to ext4. I think things are looking pretty fast so far. I'm not sure if there's a lagfix for this, but I'm quite comfortable just now footering around - unlike the complete rom I don't feel out of my depth. So I think I'll be ok for now.
hey guys!
Well i was trawling the android forums and found this!
http://www.neopeek.com/viewtopic.php?t=7524
All thanks yo neopeek for the rom.
I decided to test it out on my kovsky. This coupled with I believe duckkly's kernels worked like a charm!! ill post the kernels up here too as I experimented with quite a few to see what worked best!
Battery life: 8 hours on full blast so i rekon around 11 on normal usage
Wifi: never ever ever dropped on me so far! thou it does seem to be weak in some places around my house where i usually should be getting more signals and strong at places where i get little signal :S.confusing
phone: well calls come in and stuff but sometimes ull see a black screen and cant see who's calling! :S
Bluetooth: paired with my mw600s just fine dont know about file transfer
market:works just fine a bit slow though..could be my internet speeds out here in pakistan.
Apart from that using whatsapp like a charm. facebook apps. gaaps everything works!! not a single sod to date been using it for around about 5 days or so.
Sorry for the spelling errors! big thanks goes out to neopeek and duckkly or whoever compiled those kernels !
PS: oh and the keys will freeze up as you hit around 20% battery. I simply reboot. Also terminal doesnt seem to be working. keeps crashing on me but i dont really ever use it in daily use so it seems to be pretty stable apart from these flaws. Also you'll need to reinstall quickpic from market
Also im on radio 1.16 i believe. 1.14 seemed to drop calls randomly.
please read all of neopeek's instructions before flashing ! happy flashing
can't confirm 20% battery being the point where keys stop working. for me 4 hours of uptime seems the be magic point...
i stopped restarting modules via script (how to has been explained many times in here) and simply restart. most of the time it happens when an app is running - now what good is it if you have a shortcut somewhere, but can't get there because back- and home-key isn't working?!
but yeah, neofroyo is a big step forwards. first time using android on x1 is fun!
for terminal to work you have to reinstall it just like quickpic.
i just hope we'll see some kernel-update soon. without it the whole thing is pointless.
lol truee..thanks for the terminal update. oh if u press the camera button it will take you back to your home screen. than i guess u could load the keyboard modules..annoying i never bother with it. try my combination of kernel it gives me decent battery lifee but yea its the kernel with all the problems. tried the new kernels but they dont seem to work properly
hm, which kernel-version is that?
might try if i know which it is. just had to step down from ygge-monster to ygge-turbo. monster made my touchscreen getting unprecise in left half.
thx for the update with cam-button - never bothered to press that, since camera doesn't work anyway.
yeah, new kernels suck for our device, especially since they're missing the specific battery-driver for x1. the only guy still working on x1-kernel has been silent for months, but i can see he's still at it (porting 2.6.35.7).
Just tried pressing cam-button.
Falls back to lockscreen, after unlock shows homescreen. But system is frozen and after some time reboots directly to android. But lots of stuff doesn't work, especially phone-stuff. So i have to reboot winmo anyway.

i think its the ducckly's keyboard not loaded as modules turbo verison. I believe it should be that because i remember the msm drivers werent really working properly on it

From 2 months I am trying to make roms for ubl work on my phone, but they just don't. I have a super slow phone when I install them, very unresponsive touchscreen... Please I have no more things I can try. In these two months I tried everything. Locked bootloader roms are better, but they still aren't that smooth and after a few hours I need to restart the phone, because I get unresponsive touchscreen again. I really want kitkat on my phone, because stock sucks too much with so low ram. I beg you guys for help. I am exhausted of trying and trying

Regarding your problem, if you think LBL roms are better then why don't you stick with them as they are equivalent to UBL roms in every aspect. I am on MrSteve555 M12 and can say it is smooth as silk, so what's all the fuss about?

Ive run PA, Omni, PAC and CM11 and none of them have lag on quick settings or settings once the ROMs 'settled in' which is usually a few hours after install when everythings run and updated and synced fully. Is this lag happening for you on a clean phone with minimal gapps and no other apps installed?

Use a small gapps package. It does wonders, as long as you do the following steps in the correct order:
1. Format /system.
2. Wipe data, cache and dalvik cache.
3. Install ROM.
4. Install Gapps.
5. Reboot and leave the phone alone for at least half an hour.
6. Run through set-up (if required)
7. Leave phone alone for another hour.
8. Enjoy.
Google Search seems to be a big problem for performance, even on Nexus phones. The easiest is to get a package which does not include it (Velvet.apk it is called, and it is found in /system/priv-app).
I recommend Paranoid Android's 'pico' gapps. Google it to find the post on XDA by TKruzze.

I remember running LagFix off of the Google Play Store. Someone recommended it to me. What it does is it enables TRIM on your /system, /data, and /cache partition, which, in theory should work and improve performance two-fold. It applies to the SP, which uses NAND flash to store these partitions and therefore would suffer from the afore mentioned symptom.

I sort of think that it is all with your mind. If you like, would you share a video showing the "lag" you've mentioned in those mentioned areas (notification sliding lag, settings lag) if you are currently running CM11. I would like to actually see it.
I would like to see a video recording of your phone by using another camera, not a screen recording or cast directly from your ROM.
With your video, people will finally could see how the "lag" is and decide if it is the normal lag, or supposedly a problem of your phone.
About touch screen sensitivity, I was unable to find a thread about the same problem (the one before you started a solution thread). I've searched like mad through the General forum. It contains a build.prop modification fix. If you could get me a link to it, gosh I would appreciate it so much and will show you to the right direction

Have you tried LagFix yet? Run it and see what happens.
Plus don't use themes unless you wipe your cache afterwards: the theme modifies SystemUI.apk and therefore the cache file is incorrect.
