What is the problem, this so called community I've heard about is not much of a community is it.
There's no need for it at all.
Can someone please offer some real advice.
Ok, here is a real advice:
Please read the tutorials.
I have, but the one I am reading shows an old JF1.41 rom, when I looked at the other roms it says things like only for 36b phones ect..... It's confused me a little because tho I am amature techy I am also extra cautious and dont want to brick my phone.
Would I be ok using CyanogenMod [v3.9.7] && Palm Pre theme [1.8] ported for instance
I think the reason people are being a bit hostile is because you posted a question in the development section. That may seem OTT but there are some days when the whole first page of the development section is filled up with questions.
Before you flash a cupcake ROM (cyanogen, JF) you will need the new radio. I'm not entirely sure if you can flash that radio on RC7 or whether you will need to install a custom ROM first (like JF's RC9) so if someone could clear that up that would be useful. It can be found here. Copy that to your SD, name it update.zip and flash. Then you can flash a Cyanogen or any other cupcake ROM. That particular ROM you were talking about sounds like it was ported to the HTC Magic/Sapphire. Only flash ROMs from the dream section.

Hi mate, I wouldnt flash 3.9.7 if you only just rooted your phone, go with the stable v3.6.8.1 first, then use Nandroid recovery to create a backup. Then worse case scenario you can always restore that image if needed.
There's a good reason 3.9.7 is marked as experimental, and there is alot to learn before attempting any Hero roms etc.
If you get stuck with anything feel free to shoot me a PM Im always around and happy to help.
Long time lurker first time poster btw
Thanks guys, I will not post in this section again and sorry to those I have upset, would hve been nice to have been simply told.
Thanks for the help.
lol that was hard as nails

Wow that was by far the hardest groaned I have ever seen in my few months on xda!
People are just tired of everybody posting in devolpment when there is a q and a section, and when there are 20 to 30 new threads that have already been discussed, the devolpers get annoyed. Go with the stable version of cyanogen's rom, flash the new radio image and get yourself the hard spl, not the special, if you see warnings, run very far away. Install the s a lifesaver
ahem...
I wasn't hostile before, attempting to be civil now.
You posted two questions in the development forum. The first was regarding root. There are numerous tutorials available on this forum and even more via a simple google search. I know this because I read them, learned the process inside and out and successfully rooted my phone within the first hour of owning it. So yeah, I made a joke about a hard working mod having to move your thread... no personal attack so whatever.
Your second question was an open ended request for what are basically opinions. There are a number of great custom roms being developed here on XDA and all of them are unique in their own way. Roms like HERO and Cyan's experimental rom are definitely not for newcomers and the threads posted by their developers clearly state the risks involved in attempting to run them. 15 minutes in the dev forum and you could have made an educated decision on your own. One post in Q&A and you would have gotten much friendlier responses but in the end, you'd still have to choose your own adventure.
Let me make one thing clear...
I'm not a dev. I'm an end user who tries to contribute something useful to this forum and learns a whole bunch in the process. I've offered help to many people via PM and replies in threads (as long as the discussion is on-topic) but over time I've come to the realization that simply handing out information instead of forcing you to find it on your own actually does a disservice to not only the forum, but YOU as a user. So hate on us all you want. I think you'll find that following forum rules in the future will make your experience here a happier one, and snarky comments like yours are better left un-submitted.
To answer your question: I started with JF's 1.5 rom and think it was a great way to gain exposure to the world of custom roms and root. A lot has changed since then and things have actually become a lot easier since cyanogen released his recovery image w/ nandroid and tools like switchrom came out. Its now very easy to hop between roms and there are fewer chances you'll screw something up in the process. Personally, I've been sticking with Cyanogen's roms since 3.4.6, and though there have been some bumps in the road I've had very few issues and am currently working with his 3.9 experimental builds.
Hope you get where I'm coming from, good luck to you in the future.
Hi All,
Please would someone be so kind and explain how to make a rom from a phone using anything would be good, but preferably flashable via odin
What i am asking is how to dump an I9000 rom so that I can flash it via Odin on a I900 once again, not porting just a basic dump.
i'm interrested too
Really dude? Read stickies, search, read up a ton before posting stupidly pointless threads like this. Sorry, but this is a busy forum and people like you asking baseless questions aren't a part of it.
In case you didn't know, porting ROMs from devices is extremely hard. There is progress going on porting HTC Sense from the Desire HD but it's extremely time consuming and difficult even for very experienced devs.

Did you do a search? well there is FA info at all on this topic, and I am not looking at porting a rom, i simply want to dump my rom as is as a image.
dd i guess could work, but how the hell do make it odin friendly?

Which am I, the one asking the baseless questions or the one telling others not to? =P
Dumping a ROM is definitely different than porting from another device, but the way your question stated you wanted to take a dump from another phone (Desire for example) and then magically stick that in Odin and make it work or something. Sorry for misunderstanding.
I take it you want to dump your current ROM and then publish for others to use, like Nandroid backup style? I guess that might be interesting although I'll personally stick to cooked ROMs like Docs that are ready to flash with all optimizations and changes applied at the get-go.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for life. Cryptic as it may be, but I guess the OP is interested in trying to make a backup.
I know samfirmware has most of the firmwares, but it would be nice to know how to create a flashable rom.
Some of us really would like to know how to do this. Samfirmwares does not have all the roms. They do not have the ntt docomo rom for japan on their site. The phone was just released the 28 October with the official 2.2 froyo rom on it. I would like to walk in the store dump the rom from their demo phone to sd card. Put the rom on my phone. I really want get my sp mode working. I have rom mananger. Does rom manager do rom dumps with the back rom option.
I agree this seems like a good idea, my bad for not understanding the Cyrptic OP lol
I don't think we get nandroid backups right now. I don't think anyone has taken a dump from a running SGS and turned it into a flashable ROM. I just know that Doc, Tatyuma and others have taken Samsung's packages and cooked them into their nice flashable zips.

Post updated, hopefully it makes more scene now
Im sorry but I Didnt see a thread dedicated to this feature. I apologize in advance if this has been covered elsewhere.
Y!S
All roms are flashed via CWM unless they say to do it differently in their thread. CM7 is about the only one that's not done this way.
Nobody gives install instructions anymore since it should be common knowledge if you did your research.
Also, this is NOT a development question. We have a Q&A section for these types of questions.
all custom roms come with CWM built into the kernel.
once you have a custom rom you DONT USE rom manager anymore.
also this is the DEVELOPMENT section.
DO NOT POST QUESTIONS HERE!!!
questions go in Q&A

you guys are misunderstanding his question, ROM manager is capable of sending out OTA's for individual ROM's if the ROM creator implements this feature. as far as I know, there are yet to be any ROM's that use this in the Captivate section, though please tell me if I'm wrong. CM7 will use this feature once it's capable of using ROM manager through a properly functioning param.ko
as for you two, no need to be so aggressive/rude. you didn't answer his question properly and were a bit extreme in your judgment toward him. but as for you OP, they are correct in that this isn't truly related to development and is more suited to "General" or "Q&A" from now on.
my point was nobody uses rom manager after stock anymore.
if someone cant properly post, they wont get a full complete answer

Hey TRusselo you have gone beyond making it known that I posted in the wrong section but no matter how I look at your answers you still come across as a big fat jerk. There isnt any need whatsoever for you to post that.. and then to come back and repeat yourself with another entry saying the SAME thing and MAINTAINING the attitude.. you got my attention.
Kaik541 did answer my question. I was wondering if any devs have used this feature in rom manager. For over the air updates.
As to the reason why I posted in the DEVs section was because i thought that it was a development question. ROMS updated over the air thru ROM MANAGER is implemented by DEVELOPERS. It stands to reason why i have not seen any notes in any DEVELOPERS release and that is apparently no DEVELOPERS are using this feature. I hope that I made it understood as to WHY I posted in the dev section. I am now more familiar with the rules so I do beg your pardon for posting in the wrong place.
Nightly builds that can be updated over the air seems like it would really be something that a DEV would utilize with all the tweeks contently done to these roms. I for one look forward to having such a useful tool.

Nightly builds aren't considered updates. They are made so the flash happy people have something else to play with and test for the devs. They aren't meant for everyone to use as DD's. Utilizing this feature for nightlie's would end up with TONS of questions from newbs that don't know how to fix what they just did.
This has been brought up a few times and to be honest with all the possible issues that could come across from OTA updates like flashing a bad file cause you lost connection for a split sec and didn't notice, I wouldn't use it. The first att OTA update proved this. Thousands of bricks, then it was released by Kris update. Alot less bricks.
So i know the closest phone to ours in terms of hardware, is the Galaxy W right?
And guess what? They got the CM9 port this week.
So i guess this could help some developers to port it to our phone?
*_*
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576874
Here's the link btw
i thought it has been mention a lot of times although same specs but it is not possible to port as the mobo is all different
Yeah, I'm not thinking on getting their rom and trying to install it on my phone.
I meant get their base and develop something similar on our phone, using the same cpu/gpu drivers, wich i think are the main problem we have right now.
I'm no developer, but i don't think that this is impossible.
Their original developer is porting it as we speak, so maybe we should continue the talk here ?
If dev is porting... new thread will open
Hereby thread closed!
Go arco. He brought CM7 to my old phone (htc wildfire) so it is just a matter of time until we have CM9 for our S+.

Maybe i'm a noob. I'm not a develorper, but does it mean i shouldn't make part of this forum?
First of all, i've registered here not to create stuff, but to show my apreciation for the work of people who do create it.
I've donated to estimulate the development of other projects on other devices, but aparently people of the 9001 section don't actually care about this kind of user ( aka noobs).
And when i try to point that other developers managed to get CM9 on a phone that is very similar to ours you react that way? Seriously, you didn't became more of a man when you answered like a dickhead.
Anyway, i'm sorry for trying to help out the development of our device by bringing unharmful information.
C ya.
Your thread is in the wrong section. It should go into 9000 General section and the thread title should start with [9001]. That's the rules that were set up by XDA officials for us and our device. Not very handy but that's it.
This topic is not new and was discussed several times already in various other threads here. Ironically in the Cyanogenmod porting thread arco68, who ported CM9 for Galaxy W, has been around for two days and started to analyse out device. If you searched and read a bit, you would have found that. So this thread is a duplicate.
And thanks for the dickhead.

I can understand this reaction.
It's in my opinion the result of lacking our own general forum.
it's a shame that if i want to read topics in the general forum i have to use the search button to see i9001 topics.
When the Samsung Galaxy S Advance arrives does it get a subforum in the i9000 forum? if this is so this wil make things again more confusing.
And if there is a administrator then close this thread
But on topic there wil be a thread from arco68 ? about porting cm9.
Hello People
I have just got a ROM to test for our i9506. It is one of the best ROM's out there for other phones but I wonder if it works for our phone. one of very successful developer shared this personally with me. My i9506 is currently used for business purposes but for all those adventorous folks out there, please test it and let us know how it works. May be its a great beginning for all of us.

Good work Eclipex
It's true, or at least is very very dubious!!!
It looks like he wants someone to try what he really fears to do!! If someone bricks a phone is not his problem. This is a shameful behavior...
Already in that thread, the user @s3icc0 has answered his doubt... so posting a new thread here is just to get a victim who believes in his good will... what in fact is a bad faith behavior...
