I don't see why it'a any more distracting than any other visible mount location.
It does, though, obstruct much of the rear-view mirror view, which is dangerous and probably illegal.
Screens that high are illegal, at least in VA. This is probably mainly for night vision reasons as the glare from it will make it hard for your eyes to adjust. Also, why would you want to take away most of your rear view?
EDIT: At least mounted are, not sure if a phone mount would be a loophole.
There is no way that would survive my driving style/habits

Having anything on/hanging off your rear-view mirror is against the law. Does that mean you will get pulled over for it? No. But I bet you'll get written up for it before someone hanging an air freshener on theirs does. ;D
Lol to all the people taking about rear view laws. I drove box trucks for years, which obviously do not have rear view mirrors. Side mirrors are the only necesarry mirrors for driving.
Definately looks distracting though, but you are right big trucks do not have any rear view mirrors

It's not getting pulled over, it's getting in an accident and it being declared your fault because of it (even if it wasn't really the cause). I can see a police officer saying it was your fault because you can't see behind you or because you couldn't see out as well at night. You could try to take it off really quickly, but with everything going on might not think about it.

There's a huge difference between not having something and having it but it's not useful. In TX, when I was getting my motorcycle license, you don't really need a helmet (with the right insurance) but if you DO have a helmet, it needs to be DOT approved. Mine came from Germany so it didn't have the DOT sticker but all other international safety approvals. Was a no-go.

Just got a ticket in CT about three months ago for an air freshener hanging off my rear view mirror!:crying:
in Indiana, most parking tags/permits have a disclaimer on them that say to take them off while the vehicle is in motion and to only hang them while it is parking.
I like this idea, but not when it's an obstruction to my safety, as well as others on the road.

The ticket was for obstructing your view out the windshield, not for obstructing the rear view mirror itself. (The OP's mount does some of each, though.)
You could always turn on the front facing camera, thus the Note II will act as your rear-view mirror /camera as well
or if you can find a 3rd party camera app, add that to your multiview, thus you can have GPS + camera side-by-side
(Note II needs to be rooted to add non-stock apps to multiview)

Rear View mirrors are not needed for a car to be on the road, but if the manufacturer supplied one that doesn't mean you are just allowed to tamper with it or remove it! You have to have the kit that is designed to come with the car. What mirrors a vehicle has to have at a minimum is a law for the manufacturers to follow, not you.

They actually are required (at least by most state laws). A Lotus Exige comes with a rear view mirror that shows a nice view of a supercharger and intercooler and NONE of the road or cars on it because the laws say it has to have a rear view mirror haha

I certainly wouldn't mount a phone to the rear view mirror. People doing stupid things like that are what gets laws passed disallowing anything attached to the windshield. That's why a lot of GPS units come with a plastic disc to stick on the dashboard for the suction cup to stick to. Idiots putting them in the middle of the windshield ruined it for everyone else in their state.
As far as mirrors go, I'm sure it varies by state. Virginia requires only two mirrors, whether they be side view, rear view, or some combination. An old car I have only has a rear view and one side view mirror. What sucks about that is that I can't tint the windows unless I have two side view mirrors.
Yea, every device i have had has been a distraction, this positioning, to me seems safe (yes, only in your pocket) in moderation.
To me its more "heads up" (see bmw's new heads up display, sh*t, talk about a distraction. see pic)
Its a transit connect so it has a pretty big wind screen and these 2 OEM side mirrors with built in blind spot mirror. (see pic)
So with what i have, i look directly out the back window with half the rear view mirror.
To me it's in the same place as all the other stuff that's in the way.(better seat view pic).
But, as we all know, it surely is another reason to be pulled over-- (2012 California vehicle code book, currently 1133 pages)
Good time to test drive the voice recondition...
disregard the alien
It's cool!
I'm doin it. In CA the device must be within 5 inches of the lower left windshield or 7 if mounted on the lower right. In this configuration you could just take it down (provided you aren't stopped for it) if pulled over.

That is the big question. If you search online, you have a bunch of overprotective mothers and those that just pass down wives tales.
Is it really safer in the middle? Why? And what's the evidence?
Also, why would my Corolla just have the LATCH system for the side seats if it's so much safer the middle position with the seatbelt? The seatbelt strap-down method seems so bootleg.
Thoughts?

Does your corolla have isofix points in the middle? That is the only time I would ever put my daughters chair there. if not, its the side all the way, less to get thrown around, and, not going to be as much of a distraction in the rear mirror.

B!
I would assume the middle is safer, as their is no seats to fly into
No, but there is a windscreen, which is further away and has the potential to cause even more damage, such as the child being launched through it.....
Middle seat is safe because there is no B pillar to hit the baby seat.
I found this article randomly when I did Google search:

4 of the 5 devices I've had have had the finger prints on the metallic piece.
I can confirm this too on my multiple N7's. When I saw them, my mind instantly went the pictures of the foxconn apple ipad factories. Gloves and gowns. Guess ASUS doesn't care about it.

Hi all, I just want to share my experiences I made today.
I have bought a Wide/Macro Lens like used in the Video (from Amazon, they all seems to be pretty the same) and it is NOT working! The magnets from the lens are not attracting to the magnets in the phone, they are pushing away! Be aware, I don't thing there is a standardized way how the lens manufacturers build in the magnet since it is designed to hold to a metal ring and not to another magnet.
I tried to hold the lens just to take a test picture but the magnet interferes with the OIS, in some positions it caused hard vibrations within the N5's camera lens that was also visible in the camera app preview picture.
I would be careful with this lenses! I think the magnets in the N5 are designed for the OIS and not for some cheap 3rd party lenses. Gladly my OIS still seems to work flawless (This seems also to be why Google is not advertising such feature)

It's already known that some cheap ones on Amazon have more-or-less random magnetic polarity. The only ones confirmed for being consistent are the ones on Photojojo. As for messing with OIS, I don't have first-hand experience with these lenses, but it seems that that was also confirmed for not happening with the Photojojo lenses.
Unless you got the Photojojo ones through Amazon. Then you might want to post this in those other threads about this too, so people will see this result.

I tried to (with a little flat screwdriver), but it seems to be pressed in, it fits very tight. Maybe I try it tomorrow again (heat up a little??).

uhm.. this is totally wrong, I don't want a great picture quality, I want a wide-lens to have a wider angle for party snapshots or being out with some friends. You can increase the visibility range alot and I like the effect, so why not? I definitely DONT want to carry a camera all the time (by the way I have also a canon eos d1000, yeah I know it is just a "cheap" DSLR but it is enough for me).
This is not a "camera has too bad quality" thread (IMO the N5 camera is great) so go away
By the way, the lens is working perfect with the metal ring on my GNex
I can also confirm this. I bought these from Amazon. Received these today and when tried to put them on ... the reverse polarity on the magnet on the lens and the one on the camera itself repel each other. I was only able to hold the lens in place with my hand to try out the macro lens (picture attached). However I didn't experience any vibration or OIS not working. OIS was working fine for me. I used HDR+ mode.
Anyways, lenses are going back. Only lens confirmed to work with N5 are from Photojojo and since those lenses are way overpriced I will not buy them.
zoomed out photo was taken at the closest distance where the on-screen camera focus ring turned green. YMMV.
Excuse the fingers in the macro shot as I was holding the lens with one hand while taking the photo.
enjoy
Here's my post from another thread about this:
Got the photojojo and ehh not impresive at all. Although this one didn't seem to affect the camera like the others. When put up to the camera it didn't flicker like the cheap Amazon ones. Also it required me to have the metal ring attached
You're better off going with a product called Easy Macro. It's a macro lens attached to a band that fits around your phone so no magnets
Overall for $25 it's not worth it IMO. I'm returnng it and sticking with my easy macro.
Here are some images

I ordered the Photojojo's from Amazon -- FROM Photojojo, and it's no-go jojo for my photo phono circo.
Anyway, the magnet doesn't work at all. Not quite reversed polarity that I can tell, but only one small area wants to attract. Not enough to keep the lens on.
Yea. The magnet on my phone barely holds up a paperclip. I seriously doubt it was designed for lenses. If it was, Google would be all over that with their advertising, especially since they have been flaunting their photo capabilities.

The fisheye lenses that I got were REALLY subpar to me, so I returned it. Since I had to attach a metal ring to the camera lens so that the lens could stick to it, I couldn't really justify it. Like I said in my earlier post I really like the easy macro because it's on a band and I can easily remove it. If I found a fisheye that was on a band like that I might get it, but idk the image quality wasnt that great either and the metal ring was really a turnoff Use amazon, buy it and if you dont like it then return it

Oh boy!!! I can now confirm this. After a long time I couldn't control myself and bought another set of lenses from Amazon and decided to stick the provided ring to the phone lens. Macro lens seemed to work fine however as soon as I mounted the wide angle lens ... OIS started freaking out so bad I can't even begin to describe. You can feel the vibrations and see it on the screen as well. I immediately removed the lens and put it away. OP was right about this little thing ... I won't be using wide angle lens to avoid any permanent damage to OIS in the phone .
Any kind of strong magnet will also disorient the directional sensor while using google maps. I was wondering why the turn by turn navi would randomly tell me to make a U-turn.
Test for yourself. Pop open google maps and locate your position. Then put a magnet near the top half of the phone, you'll see your directional pointer spin away.

So much NO in this post. "real Photography"? Please. The fact that a photo is taken with a phone vs a DSLR vs medium format vs etc etc is irrelevant. You don't need a (relatively) expensive camera to take good photos. You need creativity and opportunity, that's it.

I was almost tempted to buy one to play with my N5 camera.. but reading this thread made me worried..
Now I used that little money and bought a wireless charger... should be coming to me tomorrow..
Good to know -- thanks for the warning, you just saved me some time/money no doubt!
So after months of waiting, when it was released on Monday I couldn't help but feel hesitant about picking one up, lol I'm not sure if it was justifying the money for a piece of plastic or the idea of it coming out was more exciting than actually buying it, for me the main seller is the cinema, I'm a huge movie buff and watch movies a lot before bed on my Note 10.1 2014 or Note 4 (If too lazy to grab my tablet) so this is right up my ally, i hope. The other sell is the Harmonix music player, I'm hoping its included because I haven't heard anyone talk about it since launch, I'm hoping they just forgot and it doesn't mean that it sucks or isn't included, being able to lay back on the couch and basically meditate and vibe out with immersive visuals to my favorite music sounds pretty awesome. Lets hope. Honestly those reasons and the fact I specifically opted for the Note 4 over the Note Edge in anticipation for the VR kind of pushed the sale, Otherwise getting the Note 4 would have been in vain lol.
Honestly I'm pretty excited to get it now that its ordered, needless to say I sprang for the Next Day shipping from Samsung because of my hesitation to grab one early in the week, and I wanted to get it to play with over the weekend, so It SHOULD be sitting on my doorstep ready to rock when I get home from work tomorrow.
Questions to the people who already have one in their hands:
Any tips or tricks I should know before getting this tomorrow?
Any cool features I need to know about?
Is the included content easy to run through within a day and does any of it have playback value? (I.E. The ocean, concerts, Iceland etc.)
Loading your own Movies from SD, simple?
Overheating?
Battery Life?
Worth the money?
Gaming?
Current Content & Does it seem like future content will be coming pretty regular?
Is there a content store or just what's on the Included SD card?
Etc.
Any and all thoughts appreciated, I've been reading the threads people have posted who have already picked one up and it's helped me find some validation in grabbing one.
Thanks Guys, Pretty jazzed up due to the wait and the reviews I've been reading and watching, but nervous I just dipped into the savings (especially during the already expensive Christmas time) to buy a tchotchke lol I mean I'm no stranger to Early adopting, especially with Samsung but you never know what you are in for!
Again thanks for any help!
To be honest, I don't want to ruin the surprise for you. But i would save the gaming for last...

So that the picture isn't blurry you have to put the Gear VR up and down on your face till you find your sweet spot by adjusting it with the headstrap.
And don't forget to remove all plastic covers from the lenses, they are on the front and back of the lenses.

Thanks!
Use the Cinema first, it's probably the most impressive and intuitive mode.
Games haven't impressed me much.
I concur that moving it up and down on your face is probably the most important thing for clarity, which Samsung doesn't elaborate much in its manuals.
This is very important if it's pretty cold where you live. If the Gear VR is cold, it will fog up for the first few minutes of use due to it being heated up by the phone and your face. You will notice this because a small fog will form on the lens. What I do is lift the Gear VR off my face about an inch and just blow up into the glass. It will then defog. I have to do this a couple times initially until things warm up. And I'd recommend you watch the Gear VR Intro Video first. And Cinema is real cool with 3d movies / videos. Good luck!

ya that fogging think make me go crazy, I used the cloth that come with it to clean it...but I think if we look at any lens solution for anti-fogging, esp for the glasses that might work? my sun-glasses get fog.....so there got to be a solution, if not...we can make millions just by trying to discover something new.
It seems to happen to me when it slightly slides down, I have adjusted it to sit very high on low I lid above the bag of eye, hasn't fogged since, I think air from nose would make its way in. Lol quit breathing so heavy. It is annoying when it fogs, it was only the left side for me
Everytime I use the VR... I have to literally sit in front of a fan for 2 reasons...
1. Fog
2. Heat (N4 gets hot and the VR tells me to stop for a while)
I went on amazon to see what they had, looked at some anti fog sprays. One of the reviews said people in hawaii were using baby shampoo mixed with water. You probably have to reapply a little more than using sprays but at least it's unlikely you'll get your eyes irritated if you do it wrong?
I'm wondering if samsung sells replacement lenses in case you scratch them or screw them up trying to anti fog it.
Quoting Gizmag ( What John Carmack Recommends)
Lens fogging is an issue on every VR headset, whether it's Oculus, Google Cardboard or the Gear VR. You can always remove the headset and give it a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth, but that only fixes the problem for a few seconds (and it doesn't exactly help with the virtual reality illusion).
The best lens fogging fix we've found came from Oculus CTO (and gaming legend) John Carmack: a product called Clarity Defog It wipes. Since we started using them, our Gear VR has been completely fog-free. Just wipe the eye-facing sides of both lenses before you put the headset on, and you'll have a clear window into your virtual world.
It's possible there are other products that will meet the same end, but we'd recommend steering clear of anti-fog sprays and wipes designed for car windshields: they use chemicals that were never meant to sit within a few millimeters of the human eye.

I personally would not use toothpaste. It's a abrasive and I don't believe you want to use a abrasive on optical grade plastic.
Toothpaste is used to promote oral hygiene: it serves as an abrasive that aids in removing the dental plaque and food from the teeth, assists in suppressing halitosis, and delivers active ingredients (most commonly fluoride) to help prevent tooth and gum disease (gingivitis).

The best result is to warm up the gear. I use a blow dryer or set it on my heater for a sec. Not getting it hot though. Just warm. The only reason it fogs up is because the gear is colder then the heat eminating from your face.

This is what I've been doing. If you got an Xbox one, I just place the headset on top of the console where the vents are and it warms it up nicely quick.
I use diver mask liquid spit from amazon. Works good. Just reapply every few weeks.
the fogging is due to temperature, cold lens + warm face = fogging.
try pressing your thumbs on the lenses for 30 sec prior to wearing it.
I received the Clarity Defog wipes last week. They work perfectly with one application lasting a few days. I use the resealable packs.

I had the same issue all the time until I starting positioning the VR a bit lower on my nose/face. I guess it is different for everyone but in the beginning I was so frustrated due to fog that I was contemplating returning the device.
After the minor adjustment, I'm a happy camper again.
