Best USED replacement for my REVO? - LG Revolution

I don't get an upgrade till June 2013, and I'm just sick and tired of this phone. Its just not as snappy, fast or useful as it once was. Tried rooting and custom ROMS and all but it just gets slow time and time again.
What are my options for a decent replacement or better phone for under $150? I was thinking the Galaxy Nexus? Ideas? Thanks.

Galaxy Nexus
The Galaxy Nexus is awesome!! Went from the Revo to a T-Bolt via Verizon replacement. T-Bolt sucked so I bought a used Nexus about 2 months ago and absolutely love it. It is leaps and bounds more advanced than the Revo and will probably last well past your upgrade date because of the strong developer community. No brainer here.

Droid bionic is another decent replacement. Just upgraded to ICS and has JB based custom roms. It also has TWRP recovery that gives the ability to boot between 4 custom roms plus stock

Factory reset, limit apps, and watch RAM/cache?
Just a thought, because I went from the laggiest Revo to a perfectly acceptable Revo. Actually, I was forced to, when my original Revo got the infamous boot-to-lit-gray-screen. So I bought a used one off eBay.
Old Revo: 170 apps (at one time, over 200), very laggy. I knew I had too many apps, because it performed considerably better when I reduced from 200 to 170.
New Revo: I judiciously added only 58 apps to the pre-intalled 54 for a total of 112. It's a whole new world, I'd even say it's speedy. (I only updated one of the pre-installed apps, Kindle.)
Caveat: I watch my RAM usage constantly (e.g., Settings-->Applications-->Running services), and am at the borderline already, ranging from about 70 - 150 MB free RAM at any one time. That means I cannot have an e-mail app other than Gmail (e-mail apps use about 50MB of RAM), so instead I use a browser to read the non-Gmail accounts (seems fine enough to me).
On the other hand, maybe mine will get slow again, like yours did. But I don't see technically why it should, if I continually watch my RAM and cache and limit my number of apps (like for seldom needed apps, just install, use, uninstall), and severely limit the number of widgets.
Just posted in case you want to try this (free) route via a Factory reset. (Free in money, not in time.)

The revo definitely runs better if you take an approach like jjt2mey's above. But if you just can't do without a lot of apps installed and running you'll need something more robust. My droid 4 is very snappy without having to be careful about what's installed and running. I imagine that means the similar razr line would be too.

Would you suggest a rooted Nook for a luddite?

I've been looking at posts regarding the Nook Color but there are still some details I can't quite work out.
My father has asked me to buy him a Nook Color and root it. (How often does a 71 year old luddite ask you to root something?) He primarily wants to use it as an eReader while on vacation, but he is keen to also have access to the Android market and his email. I've got him using TuneIn and NPR on his phone.
However I don't want to get it for him if the Nook Color is slow or buggy. After all, I'll be doing all the maintenance and we don't live anywhere near each other. Can anyone answer some questions to help me out?
- How responsive is it running the rooted stock with something like LauncherPro, or Nookie Froyo or CM7? Are screen taps recognized most of the time and do apps trod or fly?
- Do apps crash much? There are posts talking about instability in all the non-standard ROMs and different launchers, but not many posts about the stability people have. Do they work well enough for a non-techie to use?
- Any reasons why he shouldn't use a Nook? I don't want to set it up for him and then spend all my time answering questions. He knows Android well enough as he has a Droid 2.
- Any other relevant questions you think I'm missing?
Any info is appreciated. Thanks!
More experienced users could answer your questions better than I could. I'm just wondering what a luddite is.
I would think that once you have it set up for him if you had rooted it as 2.1 it would be fine, until the B&N 2.2 upgrade. Mine is not buggy nor crash-y. But you'd have to re-set him up after the upgrade.
I use 2.1 rooted, but have played around with froyo and CM7. I like that 2.1 maintains all of the barnes and noble functionality so I can buy and read books with the B&N interface just like stock. I can read magazines, etc.
I have a ton of apps and none crash, no tap lag but the corners of the screen are notoriously un-responsive. In fact I have had no issues with 2.1 rooted whatsoever and would never have known that this is not how it came out of the box.
No flash on 2.1 if that is an issue, but if he has a droid phone I wouldn't really call him a luddite. My MIL can't use a mouse or manage her digital camera- THAT is a luddite.
My biggest gripe is battery life and that is just crap. I have to keep turn wifi on and off when I want it to get more than a days worth of light use out of it. And even doing that I have to fully charge it every other day. That has been kind of an issue with me as this is a hybrid device, so I want it as a e-reader in bed and an android wifi device all day, so the only way for it to work for me is if I charge it on my bedstand everynight.
Stock root for now. When the update hits, he may well be happy with that. Sounds like there will be more app access then.
The touchscreen should be fine for him, as good or better than my Eris.

This is the only thing I'd worry about. When the 2.2 update comes out you'll likely need physical access to the device to re-root it (assuming the 2.2 update doesn't create other issues oin rooted NC's).
I have no stability or performance issues with CM7 + Launcher Pro. The stock kernal even supports moderate overclocking (about 15%), if desired.
The corners are not quite as sensitive to touch as the rest of the screen, but I certainly wouldn't rate it as unresponsive... It's fairly uncommon that mine doesn't register the first touch there.
One issue, depending on his vision, may be the small font sizes at the default pixel density settings. This can be remedied by increasing the value, but altering it can break some apps, causing them to render incorrectly.
You may want to wait for a non-development build of CM7 to arrive, however, as improvements are still appearing at a rapid pace.

I'm so glad someone else had the same first though! I looked it up on wikipedia:
"In modern usage, "Luddite" is a term describing those opposed to industrialisation, automation, computerisation or new technologies in general."
Sounds like a lot of people I know.....
A tongue in cheek reply!!
Since I am a 78 year old former luddite, I feel qualified to offer some advice. I rooted my nook the first day I had it but became addicted and tried most every ROM available on this site. I really like CM7 but it still requires a bit of fiddling and it does seem very slow compared to the rooted stock. I,ve gone back to the rooted stock 2.1 for a number of reasons. First, I've got the Kindle app and most of my on-time is spent reading either BN or Kindle books. I do check for the grandkids e-mails a couple of times a day and that's about it. I have a basket full of 2GB microSDs with photos, audible books, etc, etc, and like the ease of changing to whatever I want. For my usage, the rooted stock is probably the best alternative. Of course I do have my andromeda 1.2 based Captivate for everything else I want to do. I don't think anyone knows for sure what will happen when (or if) B&N really does provide an OTA upgrade to 2.2. Maybe a rooted stock won't upgrade and if it does it may have to be rerooted. I still have CM7 on a micro SD just in case. By the way, I had three semesters of computerese in 1971--1974 while working on my PhD and my first computer was an instant hernia producing 40 pound "portable". To me it sounds like your dad would get along just fine if you'll just root it and introduce him to this marvelous website with it's great devs.

Without question all '-ites' should get Nook Colors...
Troglodites, Mennonites, Frenchites, Americanites and of course my Luddite brothers and sisters as well...
But seriously, I told a newb friend of mine, who is very interested in Android, to get one and play with it. Many, many others and I all learned by playing around and making tons of mistakes and asking questions of others. Hands on is the way to go.
note: Google/search XDA with any questions before posting; otherwise you'll get scarcastic responses that won't be polite.
Good luck m8!
I'm using the NC with 2.1 and absolutely love it. I have a lot of apps. love the B&N features, love the whole android experience I can get on the NC.
I'm a 52 year old grandma who has found a fun hobby learning to root her NC and load android on her HD2 phone. I figure if I can learn to do it, anyone can!
LauncherPro Plus is my launcher of choice. I have tried ADW and Zeam. I like the scrollable widgets, facebook widget and the many home screens with LP. LP works great on my NC.
I use my NC for staying organized (calendar, contacts and email - all synced to my google account), listening to podcasts (podtrapper), listening to audio books (Audible and local library), listening to favorite music (pro amp), keeping up with the news & blogs (pulse news reader, news and weather widget), facebook (launcherpro widgets), reading books and magazines (Nook and Kindle apps), crossword puzzles (shortyz + NC native), playing games, keeping cute pics of the grandkids to show off, lots of educational apps to play with the grandkids, etc. etc. How did I live without one ????
My screen gets buggy once in awhile, but it's usually after playing Angry Birds or something that is heavy on using resources. But I rarely get any force closes. You Tube does go wonky once in awhile, and I have had to clear cache once on my gmail, but install Titanuium Backup and walk him thru clearing the cache. Works. Every time.
My battery life is what I would call decent. A couple of days - depending on what I am doing. Even with wi-fi running in the background. I have never had a problem getting wi-fi to stay conncected. Battery lasts a lot longer on my NC than on my HD2 running android.
I walked my daughter thru the rooting process over the phone when she got her own NC. She not a 'techie' in any sense of the word. This was about 3 months ago and she hasn't had any problems with her NC and now she is another NC/Android convert.
All this boils down to my saying that I really think your 72 yo 'luddite' would really like the NC. And I think the NC should 'behave itself' enough for him to get good use out of it.

Can the OG be a daily driver?

I have gone through quite a few android phones in the past year since becoming a smartphone user (Droid X2, HTC Thunderbolt, RAZR MAXX). I keep hearing stories of the good old days about the original DROID, and then Daily Steals decided to throw up the device in retail packaging for 70$ shipped.
Given I've recently been extremely unhappy with my RAZR since the ICS update (no adobe flash support/comp ability for embedded videos, which was the main use for my phone) I decided 70 bucks was a small gamble to try and regain my satisfaction with my daily driver.
Given the small amount of RAM is the device still able to handle the apps of today? I don't use it for much other than streaming movies and TV shows aside from web browsing.
Can I expect to use this phone or did I simply purchase a piece of cellular history to put away in a sock drawer?
Thanks for any suggestions and input!
I just recently upgraded to the galaxy s3 after using the Og Droid for 2 1/2 year's, and the droid remained faithful to the end. Although it got to the point where I really had to tweak the hell out of it for me to be happy with daily performance. But if you just going to use it for light browsing and streaming with a minimalistic lightweight setup and a few tweaks you should be good to go.

Lets see where to start ...
1.I'd recommend running Cyanogenmod 7.2
2. These build.prop tweaks and other mods http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426443
3. Limit the amount of apps you have installed and move as much as you can to the external storage
4. History eraser app https://play.google.com/store/apps/...edium=organic&utm_term=history+eraser+android to remove junk files like app chace and delete browsing history to keep things running smoothly
Edit:
And holo launcher as well

Awesome list!
I was running my droid 1 on CM7.2 nightlies and Prime's kernel at 1.1GHz. I always used TiBU to delete system components that seemed superfluous, like screen tips, theme stuff, email client, etc. This freed up some memory for the ROM.
I tried swap and v6 supercharger but gave up on them.
The OG Droid is sincerely lacking the RAM for lots of apps, but will certainly run well as a light weight daily driver. If you don't need gingerbread (and continued support of the ROM) , then check out a froyo CM release. Should be very light weight.
CM7.2 nightlies are still coming out, although now on a weekly basis. I keep my OG updated even though it is retired.
Loads of people are using Steel Droid ROM, which is still being updated by the dev. I never tried it.
-CM7 on DInc2
I was using primes kernel but for some reason it kept causing my data to drop in and out. And V6 supercharger worked well for me in the beginning but then became pretty hit and miss performance wise. But like you said keeping things light weight yet efficient is definitely the way to go.

New to Revo Root/ROM

Okay I just got a free Revo and currently have a Droid X. I want to use the Revo but the stock setup sucks, I want to root and get a stable/functional Rom on here. What Rom would that be? Also would I bide able to hack to use WiFi teather?
Thanks
There is really only one custom ROM for the Revo, called Broken Out. I'm using version 1.1, but there is a version 2 available. There seems to be mixed results with all versions for users. I think it works well of you don't overclock it and get things how you want then, then allow a few days for the system to kind of sort itself out. After that I recommend just leaving it alone and not doing constant tweaking. The Revo just doesn't like a lot of change for some reason. Also, for best performance and stability, try to leave about a gig of memory free and 100 mb of ram free by not having too many apps set up to constantly run. And yes, you can do wifi tethering. I haven't used it lately, but have used foxfi. It worked fine, but I believe they've changed it so that the free version only works for short intervals at a time now. I imagine there are better alternatives.
Thanks for the quick response, do you think it's worth switching from a RD.
I'm not sure I've come across that term. What's an RD?

Well, if you're really into customization, probably not. On the other hand, if 4g speeds are important to you, then yes. Also, though I don't know how much memory the DX has or how much you need, the Revo's 16 gigs of storage is a nice element as well.
I owned a DX and its a good phone no costomisability cuz of locked BL but the revo has a little more ram and a lot more memory that can be used for everything not just apps like the DX so yea there both pretty lacking in the SW development area but yea good switch at least my bro thinks so...

Downgraded to 4.1.2 - Very Happy

I bought a Nexus 7 about a couple weeks ago, and was instantly disappointed by the washed out colors and lack of saturation. Also, I was having charging, lag, and Bluetooth issues. I tried the a custom ROM, kernel, hacks, and still wasn't happy with the performance or colors of the device. I had read all the threads, and pretty much decided to sell it. Before I did though, I decided to downgrade to the factory 4.1.2 OS, since many of the performance issues were caused by 4.2. Long story short: I will be keeping the N7 now. I haven't tested Bluetooth so far, but I haven't seen any of the performance issues so far. No lagging or glitchy behavior with any apps; especially when multitasking. I have all my apps, music, and videos loaded back on it, and all is good.
Interestingly enough, the colors actually look better as well. I noticed it pretty quickly, but since everything I read said it was an issue with the calibration, I didn't think it would be resolved by the downgrade. It was pretty much confirmed when I opened Facebook for the first time on 4.1.2. On 4.2, even the simple blue splash screen looked like it had a low bit rate. The best example would be the way a picture is degraded when saving in MS Paint, or when you set the display colors to 16-bit and get the circular wave pattern on the background. On 4.2, it was the normal smooth blue. Also, the colors don't look overexposed when the brightness is increased like before. Even when compared side-by-side with my RAZR M, the display looks more natural than it did on 4.2.
Its charging right now, and that is much faster as well. Yesterday, it was charging like 10-15% every hour, and now its charged about 10% in 20 minutes or so. I will update the thread as I continue to use it, but just wanted to put my experience out there. Also, it is rooted, but no custom ROM or kernel and I couldn't be happier.

If you are rooted you can install the Trickster Mod app from the Play store and turn Smart dimmer off. That should fix washed out colors.

Take your time, save & backup apps & data on your N7 first, move them to an external source or cloud (hint, hint - Goggle Drive & Dropbox) and always good idea to start with a fully charged (or, at least 80% plus) device.
Use one of the Nexus tool kits to help guide the steps in downloading & flashing the 4.1.2 factory image, then root it (bootloader should remian unlocked) and flash 1 of 2 custom recovery image - reboot & set up the device again, give it time to "settle" & restore - and you should be good to go in getting your Apps & previously saved data back on the device.
While you are at it - you might want to select an alternate browser that support Flash Player 11.x, and, add Beats Audio/DSP to boost the speakers volume, and get 720p video back on your camera - and use custom recovery to make a full backup and set it aside safely. Disable and ignore the "prompt" for software upgrade and enjoy.

The Trickster Mod didn't work for me. Plus, its more to fix the washed out affect caused by playing videos. With that said, I play all videos through MX Player. It allows you to adjust the brightness of videos and overrides the auto-brightness feature that causes the wash out.
Also, as mentioned before, make sure you properly back up your apps and data. I saved all my info to my computer before downgrading. It will wipe everything and give you a clean slate.

Going to have to downgrade too this week.
The Bluetooth problems are killing me. I am off on holiday soon, and want to stream music to my Bluetooth speakers, but 4.2 is totally broken in this regard.
Waited as long as I can for Google to release a 4.2.2, but it's not happened. It's such a crime that the media went ballistic over the December non-bug and gave that all the media attention, but the real problems get no press at all, and Google are allowed to drag their heels on a fix.

Nah, you don't have to deal with that nonsense every few hours or daily, just disable it or turn it off - it's been discussed & # of ways to do it - my stock Rom being rooted, I used the free Autorun Manager from the Store, edit the framework & bam, done in 30 seconds. No more reminder - 4.1.2 is great for me and it does all that I needed with a bit of customization - I don't need overclocking for fancy kernel, etc.

Same here. I used Autorun to kill the Update process under the framework.
4.2.1 is great if you get rid of all the bloatware. I'm running sgt7 with lean kernel and its faster than 4.1 was for me
I was a bit underwhelmed with 4.2 as well for a bit. Finally CyanogenMod released 10.1 (Android 4.2) nightlies, and that combined with a custom kernel and TricksterMod has my N7 running quicker than 4.1 ever did.
Only side effect is symlinking doesn't work. But I'd rather use my 16GB flash drive to play my old PS1 games instead of what's available from the Play Store anyways. Much more fun, but may be due to nostalgia.
Y downgrade ?
U got a Flagship nexus Tablet so you can get the fastest access to the updates and then you dont want the update or want to go back.
Why ?
I have no issues on 4.2.1 (just flash a good kernel and ur good to go).
P.S: Never look back unless ur at the end of the road
4.2.1 works great for me. Bluetooth to an external audio device works, colors are 'normal' (don't look any different than any other release of the OS) and battery life is great. Guess I'm lucky.

Got my N7 last summer and installed 4.2 the day after it came out. Downgraded a week later. The deal killer for me was was the inability to run scripts to bind directories on my usb stick and then see them from my installed apps. Never tried Blue tooth as I only got a BT keyboard after I downgraded. But then there was also the volume nag screen when the head phone jack is active.

That is such a narrow minded oversimplification. 4.2.1 is proving extremely buggy for Nexus 7 at the moment. The amount of issues and lag are tremendous. If an update means lag and bug in no way it is wise to update.
You don't have any issues, congrats. I for one has a close to useless device on 4.2.1.
Now, will you try to make posts that make more sense than "you have updates, update" please.

I've been on stock 4.2.1 since the update first came but I haven't liked it since it lags more than previous versions and also the tablet freezes and reboots from time to time (at least once a week). Lately I have been thinking about downgrade to 4.1.2 with the nexus 7 toolkit but then I read about the upcoming 4.2.2. Hopefully it will arrive soon(!) and fix all that were broken with 4.2. Otherwise I also will downgrade to 4.1.2. One of the reasons I bought a nexus device was to avoid rooting and flashing and still be using the latest that android had to offer. But as 4.2 turned out maybe I have to reconsider my decision

How to get a buttery experience w/ our phone

Since I have gotten this phone I have noticed an influx of complaints about how slow and laggy this phone is due to it's low RAM. I too have experienced these same issues as everyone else. After using the Galaxy S 3 since July it was hard not treating this phone like it was a power house. Well this phone obviously isn't, and as Android OS and Apps are advancing the slower this phone is going to seem. Remembering what life was like when I had the Samsung Intercept on Virgin Mobile I was able to get some what of a buttery experience with this phone. So I am just going to share my set up and what I am doing, and other's may share their experience. My hopes is that we can all learn what to do and what not to do and somewhere in between. I am no expert and do hope to learn some pointers from people more experiences and more qualified than me
#1 I am using a light weight rom, slim bean 4.1 to be exact I am sure any rom will do, but with this phone I would assume less is more in terms of performance. Also play around see what works best for you, ,GB, ICS, JB4.1, JB4.2. There is no best rom just best rom for you. Once you find one that works for you golden!
#2 Since I am using Jellybean I went into developers options(to enable go to about phone and tap build number 7 times) and I set the background process limit to 4. My reasoning is I dont' want to forfeit multi tasking all together but it's very apparent that this phone can only handle so much. You can also set it "don't keep activies" which wont allow any multi tasking like old school iOS.
#3 I use Android built in task manager to exit out of applications I am using quite frequently. If you hold the home button for an extended period of time the task manager will appear. (maybe different depending on which rom you use)
#3 don't overload this phone with apps, not only do we have limited storage for apps, but the more apps that run in the back ground the slower that it takes. What I did is many apps are basically short cuts to website for instance bank of america. What I did was in the stock browser I bookmarked the website, and then made a short cut to my desktop. I also changed icon to something similar to what the app icon would look like. Not all launchers support changing the icon. I did the same with facebook as it is often runing in the background. If you don't use Navigation uninstalling google maps might be a good idea. If you play games delete all processes before and after playing
#4 A lot of games take up a lot of resources so if you must play games especially one that uses a lot of power than maybe a good idea to delete processes before and after game usage. If the game(or any app for that matter) is constantly freezing than perhaps you should just delete it.
#5 don't use a launcher that takes up a lot of memory, the lighter the better. Stock launcher is probably a safe bet. I use Espire launher(iOS launcher), I know Atom would also be a good one. Stay away from any 3D launcher anything with eye candy imo is bad idea. In my experience Go Laucher, mihome, Launcher7/8 are memory hogs, I mean if they slowed down my old GS3 just imagine our phone. Although with Launher 7/8 If you were disable the live tiles it may run smoother. My opinion though is what's the point. The live tile's is the reason what attracted me to those launchers in the past. In the end just use what works for you
#6 If the phone starts acting up go ahead and reboot,
#7 If using a rom that supports theme's try not to use them, often times I have run into many so called bugs that magically disapeared when reverting back to system theme. Right now I am using xperia cm10.1 and so far no issue's what so ever
#8 I disabled Google Now, my experience has shown me that our phones aren't capable of handling it. Google now is constantly running in the back ground and I suspect causing the phone to slow down, freeze, or just randomly reboot.
#9 I do not use live wallpaper, nor do I use any widgets. I love widgets and depending on the widget may not use any extra resources. That being said for me on this phone I would rather be safe than sorry

This has improved my phone greatly. Make sure your ROM meets the requirements and doesn't have any tweaks.
Using these methods I get decent performance, and battery life. This is no GS3 so I believe to get the most out of this phone you really have baby it to get the most out of it. I believe the issue is with how little Ram this phone has. I have had the HTC Mytouch 4g and I never had this issue. The MT4G also had almost a gig of Ram. I don't believe it's the processer as there are many 1GHZ single core processing phones that do not have the FC/Freezing issues we have.
Try CM7
I have been using Slimbean 4.1 and 4.2 too for the past few weeks and I have experienced frequent lag spikes when multitasking which sometimes drived me crazy. Recently, my phone was stuck in a bootloop while I was out of town so I had to flash CM7 and I was surprised at how buttery it felt. Overall, I really like the performance (although I do miss some features of JB) and I strongly advise you to try it out.

To each his/her own. I am not interested in gingerbread unless absolutely necessary. I think many of the problems are with Google now

Smartguy used TWRP and says it works just fine. Just make a nandroid as always in case you have an issue, I don't think you will though. Just be sure to disable any task killers if you use them.
It works flawlessly in twrp
