So it seems like a lot of people are having trouble getting 4G speeds with AT&T. After a couple days of back and forth with sales reps and tech support, I think I have it figured out. I'll try to make this an easy to follow guide.
Getting the Right Data Plan
First thing's first, you need to have a 4G data plan. To check which data plan you currently have, you can log into your account on http://www.att.com. After logging in, mouse-over the "Wireless" tab at the top and click "Add or Change Services." From here, you can scroll down and view the "Web, Text & More" section. This is what mine looks like.
Your data plan has to be a 4G Smartphone plan. If you are coming from a previous 4G phone, and you just popped in your old sim card WITHOUT calling AT&T, you should be all set and you can skip to the next section. However, if you DID call AT&T to give them your Nexus 4's IMEI, your data plan will default to "3G for Blackberry" or something similar. This is because the Nexus 4's IMEI isn't appropriated as a 4G smartphone in AT&T's system.
You have a couple options at this point. You can try to contact AT&T, explain it to them, and hope they give you a correctly provisioned data plan. This can be a quick and simple fix, and has worked for some people. However, it didn't work for me. After speaking with customer service over live chat, tech support over the phone, and going into both an authorized retailer and a corporate store, I was told that they can only provide 4G plans to AT&T branded 4G phones.
The solution to this is to give AT&T the IMEI number from one of their 4G phones. (NOTE: The only thing the IMEI does is tell them what type of phone it is, and what plans can be assigned to it. IT IS NOT LIKE A SERIAL NUMBER, AND AT&T WILL NOT CHECK TO MAKE SURE IT IS UNIQUE.) Find a friend with an AT&T 4G phone and note the IMEI number. You can quickly pull it up by typing *#06#. Then you can call AT&T customer service, tell them you have a new smartphone that you would like to get the correct data plan for, and give them the IMEI number you just copied down. (I told them I have an LG Optimus G, which isn't too far off I suppose )
Now you should have a 4G data plan.
Setting the APN
After you confirm that you have a 4G data plan, you have to set the correct APN. To get into the APN settings, go into your android settings, under "Wireless & Networks" go into More>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names. You can either select the menu button and create a New APN, or you can select the one already there and edit it to match the one below.

Be sure to hit the menu button and save the APN, then select it in APN settings. If at this point you fail to get a connection, you most likely don't have a 4G data plan and should go through the steps in the first section.
Enabling LTE
This part is optional, but I see no harm in doing it. Type *#*#4636#*#* into your phone. This should open up a "Testing" settings screen. Go into Phone Information, scroll down to "Set preferred network type:" and select "LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)" from the drop-down menu. If you happen to be in an area with AT&T band 4 LTE, you will be able to connect to it. According to this thread, AT&T has band 4 LTE in the Oklahoma City area. If anyone else can confirm any other areas, maybe we can get an idea of how widespread it is.
Hopefully this has helped some people. Let me know if there are any inaccuracies or changes that should be made.

I have galaxy s3 with LTE data plan so so when I get my nexus , I just need to set up apn . Thats it right.

No, it doesn't have to be LTE. You should still be able to connect to the HSPA+ network. You only need the LTE plan if you want to try to connect to the band 4 LTE network in the few areas AT&T has it.
So what are the speeds with this?
I do want the LTE network, so I guess I should call and get that changed. However, nothing works at all, no data, no HSPA, nothing. I guess 4G plan isn't valid.

Right, all you would have to do is put the sim card from your GS3 into your Nexus 4. It should set the APN automatically since it's already a 4G plan, but you can always double check.

This would depend a lot on your area. I seem to be getting 8-10 Mbps in a HSPA+15 coverage area.

Dose anyone know if this will negatively affect a data plan that is grandfathered unlimited. I don't want them to mess that up.

Try changing the APN setting from "pta" to "phone". I believe pta is the setting for the LTE plan, and phone is the setting for the regular 4G.

I think you only stay grandfathered unlimited if you don't change your plan at all. I have the 2GB plan that is no longer available, and on the "Add or Change Services" page it tells me that if I make any changes I won't be able to revert to my current 2GB plan. I would assume it's the same for all discontinued plans.
i have grandfathered unlimited data from an old iphone 3gs plan...here is what it says on att's website:

so is this considered "4G"? i live outside of philly and the fastest i've ever gotten on speedtest was around 6 mbits/sec...99.9% of the time it's between 1 and 3 (this is on my galaxy s 2).

Mostly correct -- I was under the belief the wap.cingular isn't able to achieve HSPA+ speeds (I was only able to get 1mbit up and down). Someone else in a different thread told me that they were connecting at HSPA+ speeds on wap.cingular. So it turns out APN's alone aren't directly indicative of what plan you have. However, being able to connect on either "phone" or "pta" APNs is pretty much a guarantee your plan is provisioned correctly as those are the APN's used for HSPA+ as well as LTE.

It may well be true that AT&T don't check that an IMEI is unique, but actually it IS a unique serial number ....

So far only updated the APN, and I was on the wap.cingular, with a grandfathered data plan. My Speedtest results after the APN change is now DOUBLE my wifi connection speed via DSL. I'm outside city limits South of Holland, MI, and getting 7-9Mbps now. I can't wait to go up to Grand Rapids where I know ATT has a very robust 4G network and see what I get there.
So would LTE on AT&T work with the non-smartphone unlimited data plan?
Does AT&T even pick up the nexus 4 as a "smartphone"?

It appears some people who are in AT&T LTE coverage where AT&T does not have 700MHz licenses are getting LTE over the AWS frequencies (the same ones used in Canada). The Nexus 4 only appears to have LTE operable on AWS. There's more about it in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021173
It's unlikely LTE would work with the non-smartphone data plan as those require the "pta" APN, which is only accessible on LTE plans.

I double checked to make sure I had my settings right, according to the OP.
I'm not getting the LTE symbol in the status bar (only H) and getting 8-10 MBPS down according to the speed test.
I assume that's still HSPA+ for the Atlanta downtown area. (By GA tech)
AT&T iPhone 4S SD Chip to N4 - 4G Compatible?
I am switching over from an iPhone 4S to the N4 and cannot get 4G data speeds (actually the best I can get is sub 2mb/sec). My old APN was wap.cingular and I beleive I was only getting 3G data with the iPhone; however, at some point AT&T started calling my service 4G and that is what would show up on the phone. Can anyone confirm that the iPhone 4S to N4 switch will require me to take the IMEI route to get the AT&T 4G speeds. Thanks for the help.

I want to put an HTC dream on Bell, because now that Bell is HSPA it is compatible with the device. All I need is a sim card and I'm good to go. However, would I face problems doing this? For example, how does the device know which number to dial to get a data connection going, and things like that?

From what I can tell, the telus/bell hspa network is 850/1900 and ONLY supports 3G, i.e., there is NO EDGE FALLBACK. This means that you *MUST* get a device that supports hspa 850/1900, which means you need a ROGERS HTC DREAM. An ADP1 or tmobile-branded DREAM will NOT work on telus/bell.
Note: Do NOT hold me to this info, do your own research to verify that these statements are accurate.
As for getting a data connection, that is simply a matter of plugging in the correct APN info that matches your network. But quite frankly, at $40 for 500MB, I would stick with WiFi for data.
I bought a Rogers dream. I have the htc Vogue with 7 dollars unlimited data now, so that's why I'm curious about if my data will work, as the $7 unlimited data was only for the Vogue.

Thr $7 unlimited plan will not work with the dream. Thre only smart phone that bell allowed that plan on was the vogue/touch and they consider it a pda device. The data will most certainly look different on bells network because you'll be connecting to the new hdspa network. Bell will be able to tell that you are on a smart phone on their new network and charge you accordingly.
The only possible work around I xcould think of would b e to register a 3g dumbphone on the new sim card and thewn try to put that sim card in the dream but like I said bell can tell the difference between dumb phone data and smaet phone data so you'll probably get dinged fairly hard

Hmm, I'm not sure which speed my data is on the vogue. At the top it says 3G with android, but on Windows Mobile it said EVDO.

Well bells cdma network was also considered 3g so if the phone was capable then it should of had 3g connection.
Like I said youn can try and register a hdspa equipped dumbphone and then throw the sim in your dream but I'm not sure how well that will work and that is assuming bell doesn't hardware IMEI lock the account

The dream and the touch work on complety different networks. Assuming the touch does get 3g data it does so on bells cdma network whereas rogers dreram wikk get 3g speeds on bells new hdspa network wich is more like a gsm network. There is no way to fool bell into believing the dream is working on the old cdma network.

I don't know if I'm allowed to switch plans during a contract, but even if I do I think Bell is ridiculously expensive for data. I pay $55 now, and I think it would cost me just short of $70 a month for just 1GB of data

I can tell you now that you're noting going to get $7 unlimited data on any other smart phone device other than your touch.
Depending on how far you are into your contract(more than 6 months) I would call retensions and try to negotiate a better deal. You can check the Bell section of Howardforums to see what is currently being offered. Also depending on where you work you might be able to get an EPP plan.
You can always change your plan on contract you just can't drop your plan. Also if you get a retension plan or EPP plan you will have to renew for another 3 years.
Also if you do switch to normal data read the fine print. That might also require a 1 or 3year contract, I'm not sure I haven't looked at it.

I have no idea how to get in touch with retentions, or what I could say to them. I just know I would burn through 500mb of data in several days

I can confirm that a T-Mobile G1 (sim unlocked) will not work on Telus.
I went to a Quebec telus store yesterday to try and have it activated, I bought a Sim card and put it in the phone, the phone was unable to see the Telus network, it was only seeing the Rogers network.

In fact, it was only seeing the rogers *EDGE* network.
Telus/bell don't have edge at all.
You need a *rogers dream* to find the telus/bell hspa signal.

Bell's website says it will work when I type the IMEI in, but on Bells website it says 1900mhz and on the HTC website:

lol like lbcoder says, rogers has their own frequency phone (with the proper crystal to work on rogers network). and that link is for the htc hero, its a whole 'nother phone

I can confirm the Rogers Dream works with Telus also. It always shows as Roaming but still works fine, just have to enable data connection when roaming.
Telus' APN settings are:

Also, anyone plannning to run CyanogenMod on their Dream or Magic should consider this tutorial for installation, it allows you to keep the 3.22.20.17 radio image that is stock on the Rogers phones and improves the data connection. There is also this bit of info that enables full UMTS support when running CyanogenMod.
Hello everyone! I just took the plunge and ordered my Note from Amazon. I am a former Dell Streak/DJSteve user who has been forced to use the Samsung Infuse with MIUI for the past 6 months and I could NOT be happier about the Note.
When it arrives tomorrow, what are the steps I should take to ensure maximum compatibility with AT&T's network/speeds? What configurations settings should I modify? Lets start an AT&T optimization thread .
I anticipate rooting the device as soon as I turn it on - any suggestions for a custom ROM/Radio while you are at it?

I'm another refugee from the Dell Streak 5, for which DJ Steve could do only so much. You'll like the Note much better.
I can't comment on rooting. Let me start the ball rollling on getting you going on AT&T.
I popped into my Note the SIM I was using on my Streak. Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't need a special "4G SIM" since the Note is not an LTE phone.
Next relates to your plan. Your post doesn't say what it is. I'm on a metered 4G Smartphone plan. Others have grandfathered unlimited plans. In any event, you need a compatible plan. The one you had for the Streak (assuming it was on AT&T) should work.
Third is the APN. There are a ton of posts in this forum on this issue. The wap.cingular APN works fine (if you can't find configuration I can point you to a link) but it is only 3G. You want the phone APN for HSPA+. But ... you need to be properly provisioned for that APN. Just having the SIM and the plan aren't enough.
if you call customer service, when they look up your IMEI, you won't be provisioned for the phone APN, just wap.cingular. (You can tell by the SOC for your data plan but that is a whole another discussion). Call tech support, nicely explain the situation. You'll need to give them an IMEI from an AT&T 4G phone. I used the IMEI for the Infuse (easily findable through a Google search). The tech then could provision me for the phone APN (if you can't find configuration I can point you to a link). I wrote here about this experience on my blog, and the AT&T tech even responded with a comment!

If you're grandfathered into an unlimited plan, stick with the wap.cingular apn. The newer apn's are regulated much more closely. You'll still get HSPA+, but your speeds probably won't go much higher than about 6mbit at best, which is more than enough for most things really.
The other thing to do is disable fast dormancy. From the dialer, enter in *#*#9900#*#* and disable fast dormancy.

If you are metered rather than unlimited (can't tell from your post) I would think regulation would be a non-issue as you pay through the nose if you go over your limit. Also, I believe that theoretically the phone APN has a higher HSPA+ limit than the wap.cingular APN. Nevertheless, in practice my experience so far (in the Los Angeles area) is that the phone APN and the wap.cingular APN have similar speeds. So even if you are metered, you might want to skip going through the bother of provisioning to the phone APN as long as your speed is OK for your purposes on wap.cingular.

Definitely good advice. I forgot that one.
I'm on grandfathered data and have never noticed speed differences between the APN settings floating around on the net. It's not a 4G phone, so at max, any APN will give HSDPA+ (i.e. fake 4G) speeds any way you slice it.
I'm just using wap.cingular and it works well enough.
ericshmerick was the guy who got AT&T to recognize the GTN-7000 as a phone so we could have voice + data. When I called AT&T yesterday and gave them my Note's IMEI, they knew it was a phone, not a tablet. We all owe ericshmerick a lot of thanks, since now all we have to do is pick and choose among APNs, as opposed to dealing with AT&T trying to kick us off the voice network.

Thanks guys. It's hard to take credit for something that was broken to begin with. I just emailed and called a few people who probably wondered how I found their information (google is amazing).

Just got mine around lunch from UPS, threw the battery in just to
fire it up. WOW! Screen is clear as a bell & bright.
Mine came from Germany via Amazon. Sealed Note box, inside a box
with the adapter & instructions to set it to English.

On the 2GB plan, you should use the Phone apn. You'll get the best speeds that way. Just do a search for the correct settings on the Phone apn, and make sure that your account is provisioned for 4G. I believe you need to make sure that it using the "HSDPB" SOC code.
As for fast dormancy, you should disable that by entering *#*#9900#*#* in your dialer and disabling it from the menu that comes up. Basically, fast dormancy is a feature that some networks use in order to more quickly transition from an idle UMTS state all the way up to HSPA+ and back to idle again (when the connection isn't being used for a period of time). The idea behind this feature is to a) conserve battery life on your device and b) more efficiently scale and distribute available bandwidth between you and the cell tower. However, as AT&T does not use this feature on their network, having it enabled on your device can have a negative effect on your battery life in addition to making your data connection more erratic and generally slower (because there's wasted overhead being transmitted). The effect of disabling fast dormancy while on AT&T is that you'll notice the initialization time for your connection from idle to active will be slightly longer, but once active, it will stay at the highest available transmission rate (HSPA+) for longer before going back to idle instead of rapidly going between 3G, H, and H+ all the time.

I'm not positive, but I believe that SOC code is for unlimited plans. Mine is a metered plan, and my new SOC code is HSSMT7. Once my SOC code changed to that, I was able to access the phone APN. Before I could not.
I'm curious if anyone else with a metered plan can confirm the different SOC code.

I'm on the 2GB Smartphone plan for 4G and my code, assuming I'm looking in the right place in my bill, is HSSM. I had to view my data plan details for my prior month billing to find it. But, I'm not sure that's the correct code because nowhere do I see the acronym SOC.
In any case, I'm using the "phone" APN settings and I get 6.6 down and 1.0 up.

I view my SOC code by the following method which I learned somewhere on this incredibly useful forum:
1. Log on to my AT&T Wireless account.
2. Choose Manage Features.
3. On the next displayed page, find and choose the hyperlink to your data plan. Mine is called DataPro 2 GB for Smartphones on 4G.
4. On the resulting popup window, take a look at the URL, particularly the end, which shows the SOC code. My URL ends: olamexecute?selectedFtrSoc=HSSMT7
Admittedly this roundabout way of viewing your SOC code is sort of like driving from LA to SF by way of NY. Reportedly there is an easier way viewing your data details, but if that alternative works, I can't figure out how to use it. Perhaps one of the countless more knowledgeable people on this forum can chime in.
FWIW, the very helpful AT&T tech who helped me provision my account so I could use the phone APN told me that the actual SOC code wasn't that critical, there were several that would get me to where I wanted to go (the HSPA+ fast lane).

You're welcome. One caution. I'm relating what the AT&T tech told me (about the actual SOC code not being that critical). He seemed knowledgeable as well as helpful. But I can't 100% confirm. Though after his change I had no problem accessing the phone APN.

Hmm thats weird my code is olamexecute?selectedFtrSoc=LTESMT2....I used my wifes APN settings from her skyrocket and I get way faster download results in speedtest from 1.92mbs to 6.0mbs, but it times out in the upload phase of the test. MMS works, text works, phone calls work and internet works. I'm gonna try the "phone" apn settings next. Her skyrocket APN name is ATT pta. We don't have 4g LTE in our area yet. I'm on the 2GB 4g LTE data plan (I had a skyrocket too and returned it) and so is she. I also have AT&T's LTE provisioned SIM card in my Note kept over from my skyrocket. Should I call tech support and have my IMEI provisioned for HSPA+?

Namuh, I'll let better minds than mine answer that. My advise is to hold off until you get those answers. Once you go back you may never go back, if you know what I mean.
On the phone with tech support. My account is provisioned for 4G Hspa+. under a different imei number than the note though. They did give me the option to replace the imei number that is on my account with the Notes imei number. Not sure what to do. She told me that her supervisor told her that the only apn settings she could give out is wap.cingular because its an international phone. But wap.cingular only gives 3g speeds right? I'm in an Hspa+ area. I'm off the phone with tech support. I'm going to wait on a reply in this thread or other threads to see if I should have them apply my Notes imei to my account.
So I'm writing this guide for SGH-I537 (ATT Samsung Galaxy S4 Active) users who want to use their I537 on T-Mobile or other carriers that support AWS (Advanced Wireless Services; see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Wireless_Services).
Initially I got my I537 and heard conflicting reports of DIY SIM unlocking being successful, supposedly some people unable to get the AWS bands. So, I played it safe and got the device unlock code straight from ATT. Everything seemed to work at a cursory glance, got LTE and fast speeds, great! Little did I know that I actually did not have AWS unlocked.
In my room I get nearly no reception and rely on a repeater to get signal and be able to do basic things like SMS, make calls, etc. I noticed that for some reason the I537 was not picking it up.
ATT runs their LTE over some TMO HSPA frequencies (AWS) and the phone by default won't do HSPA on those frequencies. An AWS unlock will allow the phone to do either LTE or HSPA on these frequencies, thus allowing it to talk to my repeater.
I followed the guide at http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-t...aws-bands-on-att-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337sgh-i337m/ but instead used the UMMS code of *#0808#
It works on the latest stock, unrooted ROM. My device was already SIM unlocked but I don't think that will make a difference for this process. I believe that one would require SIM unlock regardless, though, to use another network.
This guide unfortunately depends on Windows specific tools, so I had to use a Windows machine to do this. It's a pretty easy guide -- basically you tell the phone to expose its modem over USB, use a Qualcomm program to talk to it, do a backup of the NVRAM, and NV Restore someone's I337 NVRAM that has the AWS enabled.
It works perfectly for me and has worked for others as well (see comments on that guide). The only difference is we have to dial *#0808#
You may want to add the T-Mobile LTE APN as well:

Which step did it fail at? Can you walk me through what you did?
EDIT: Did you go to Device Manager, and see the two Samsung COM ports? Then in the QPST tool, did you add those ports manually? Otherwise QPST wil always say "No phone"

Very strange. I wish I knew the ansewr to this I stumbled upon the AWS unlock guide for I337 long time before I bought the I537. I guess I was lucky that it went without a hiccup then.
And you have the special Samsung drivers installed from that site and are sure some other drivers aren't trying to pick it p? =|
I would like to add that you should change the apn name to fast.tmobile.com (from epc.tmobile.com) that's how enabled 4g LTE in my city.
I would like to ask a 'stupid' question is there a way to enable 3g? It seems to be either edge or 4g/4gLTE for me, I've never seen my phone have a 3g icon.
For T-Mobile it's not going to show 3G afaik, it will default to showing 4G for any 3G or HSPA 4G mode. If you have LTE enabled (any of the LTE modes) then it'll show the 4G with "LTE" under the bottom right side. I leave my GS4A on T-Mobile with WCDMA Preferred which seems to offer the best speeds and connections. While T-Mobile is still working on their system here in Vegas and making improvements, the LTE aspect is of no use to me and just allows me to burn up my 5GB that much faster.
To change the modes you'll have to go into the *#*#4636#*#* menu and do it, again afaik. It's the least hassle free method I've found for myself so that's what I stick with.
And I've never changed the APN from epc to fast - it's worked since I did those same instructions to enable the AWS capability. I did change it one time but the speed tests ended up being effectively the same no matter which APN I used so I set it back to the default of epc.tmobile.com and have yet to have any issues.

Yeah, good call, I'll add the APN settings to this thread.
We have LTE in San Jose and San Francisco and it's REALLY fast and way better than the HSPA+ network. And it seems to switch to HSPA+ just fine if there's no LTE.
Added TMO LTE APN settings.
while the process went without a hitch for me, I did not see any improvements
I was getting 4G both before and after, no LTE
in fact, the speed went down fron 2.5MBPS to less 1MBPS !!
So i flashed the AT&T backup back!
might be cause I am in Seattle area

HSPA isn't LTE, you have to enable that aspect manually. By default when you put a T-Mobile SIM in the GS4A it'll set itself up for GSM/CMDA usage, and you have to alter that to get the LTE working, at least I did in my case.
I went into the service menu using *#*#4636#*#* and changed it from GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) to LTE/GSM auto (PRL) and you should reconnect and get the proper 4G/LTE symbol noting the type of connection (4 with smaller G above the letters LTE).
Here in Las Vegas that's all I have to do to enable LTE (it'll show as LTE:14). I don't use it because the actual LTE signal strength is like -105 dB here at home; when I switch it over to WCDMA Preferred it increases to -78 dB and the speeds are very fast with HSPA:10 or even HSPA:15 on occasion, and LTE drains the battery more as well (in my testing).
That's my usage and experience, maybe making some alterations with your service menu can improve performance for you. T-Mobile is still doing the upgrades across their whole network so, what might have crappy signal coverage now might improve soon.
My suggestion is try each of the potential connection methods and find the one with the best signal strength and the best speeds - for me, again, that turned out to be using WCDMA Preferred, and I'm right across the street (line of sight) with a T-Mobile leased cell site, just about 1200 feet from me with nothing in the way either when I'm here at home.
Also, I've never had to edit the APN info on my GS4A for use with T-Mobile. I know the recommendation is to alter it from epc.tmobile.com to fast.tmobile.com but since mine works just by altering the radio connection and ends up getting the same speeds (I've tested both APNs), I just stick with the default of epc.tmobile.com and I haven't had any issues worth noting. I did read some comments that said in some areas to get the LTE working properly you DO need to use fast.tmobile.com, but for me I haven't - could be something to check into for yourself.

Got LTE running on the opposite corner of my building, with abysmal speeds!
the LTE coverage in Bellevue/Redmond seems to be either very spotty, or very incompatible with S4A, not sure which it is... but overall the internet speeds are better with HSPA+ than LTE in any case...

Try each. One of them should come up as the phone.
SIM Unlocked on T-Mobile in Orlando:
Before Samsung replaced my Active I was running MF1, this hack wouldn't work. They sent me a new replacement with MF3 Monday. This worked!! Places where I get "E" are now "4g"!!

So I've gone through all the steps and now I am at the part where I add the APN but I can't seem to find the MMS Protocol section. I've also heard we should use fast.t-mobile.com instead of the fast.tmobile.com, would that matter??
Anyone else on AT&T unable to get LTE? The APN settings that auto-downloaded are correct according to AT&T's documentation, but I'm only getting H+.
Your GPRS could be disconnected. I'd you use app advanced signal status you can look at settings Beyer to see if your set up correctly

I had to use my girlfriends IMEI for her Nexus 5 for it to pick up LTE. Before that, I was only getting H+. Try to get an IMEI of another ATT LTE Android phone and it should do the trick!
Can't get LTE to work
I need some help. I have the new, unlocked, Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and I can't get on the AT&T LTE network as well. Here are the steps I have taken:
The Setup
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 that is on the LTE network with no problem
My AT&T account had a Lumia 820 device tied to my account (and old device of mine) and it worked fine for LTE on all of my future pones, including my S4
I purchased an unlocked D5803 Z3c from Handtec
My Activate Attempt
Went to the AT&T store to pick up a new nano sim card
I gave my new (Sony) IMEI number to the AT&T rep (stupid move, clearly) and they loaded it under my account
With the new sim, my Z3c could place calls and send/receive text messages
Data would not work
My Resolution Steps
I looked up APN settings online and tried several different variations
The HSPA+ Cingular APN settings worked, but left me without LTE service
I could not get the mobile.att.net APN and LTE settings to work
Reading Android Central and XDA, I discovered that others had this issue as well
Using forum advice, I called AT&T
The AT&T rep did confirm that my Sony IMEI number was registering as a "2G" phone, which is why I did not get LTE access
I put one of my extra LTE device IMEI numbers on my account
My phone still won't connect to the LTE network
I notice that even though they registered an LTE phone (and they confirmed it came up LTE), my AT&T account page shows an old flip phone silhouette
The rep noted that there was nothing else they can do...so I basically have to deal with it
I'm posting on XDA to leverage the wisdom of this crowd
I remain confident that this will get resolved, yet frustrated at the same time
I'm at a loss and wonder if I have to activate this nano sim in another supporting device or the like. Thoughts?

No clue, but AT&T tech support confirmed that my IMEI is registered and my previous two devices were all LTE devices. I have no idea what's going on either.

Are you having the same issue? Do you see the cartoon sketch of a flip phone in your account as well?
What you have to do is give them the imei of an LTE capable phone. It absolutely does not matter that you will not actually be using that phone.
If you already have an LTE phone, just switch your SIM to your z3 when it arrives. It is absolutely unnecessary to call AT&T with your new IMEI. Anything AT&T tells you to the contrary is flat out wrong.
Issue resolved!
Bottom line...do not give these clowns your Xperia IMEI number.
When they entered the IMEI number it flipped my data plan from a grandfathered unlimited plan to a pay-per-use plan with no LTE (why they couldn't figures this out last night, it beats me). He was talking about my wife's plan and her unlimited data. I then noted "mine is unlimited too" and then said it wasn't. You can only imagine how things went from there.
The unrecognized IMEI number automatically switched me off of my plan.
They have me on a temporary 3GB plan, as the support rep couldn't get me back on the unlimited plan. They have to send the change to their back office team and it will take a week to get it back.
My phone now has the 4G icon versus H+.

Nope, it actually still shows my previous LTE-capable phone.
I actually also initially had this issue ; I was sitting in the AT&T &T store on the phone with tech support until the sales rep realized my phone wasn't showing up in the system as an LTE device. He input a bogus LTE IMEI for me, after which I restarted my phone. It's been working for me since then

So everything that is claiming to have LTE ----> Do you have a 4G icon on your phone or LTE? I am in US, went to ATT store ---they entered an imei of a Samsung Galaxy S5 and now it shows 4G. If you go into mobile networks preferred network mode it says 4G preferred/wcdma/gsm. I am assuming this is just due to the UK software version not being the same as US...

If you go into mobile networks preferred network mode it says 4G preferred/wcdma/gsm. I am assuming this is just due to the UK software version not being the same as US...

IMEI problem rectified, they reverted it to my previous phone's IMEI. Now displaying 4G. Sweeeeeetness.
It's just silly that AT&Ts LTE is tied to the IMEI in their system and not simply having an LTE capable phone.
I ported a line to use with my Z3c and gave them the IMEI of an AT&T HTC One so that LTE would work, but they would only send me a micro sim because according to the IMEI that's the sim I need. Tried to tell them I need a nano sim but the gal on the phone said she couldn't send one, I'd have to go to a store pick one up.
If you are going from an LTE phone that uses a nano SIM card to the Sony Xperia Z3 compact, it is not necessary to contact AT&T. You will need to manually add the APN settings on your Sony Xperia Z3 compact. Here is the path to get to the APN settings..
Settings > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names > press + to add a new APN
Enter in the following settings listed below
Name ATT Phone
APN phone
Proxy Not set
Port Not set
Username Not set
Password Not set
Server Not set
MMSC http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410

Save the changes you made, select the APN you just created and reboot the phone. Everything should be working from there.

So I do have the 4g icon in my status bar. Does this mean that LTE is working fine?
The only reason I am asking is because on the MY ATT page I do only see the silhouette of a flip phone.
Edit: My phone automatically downloaded internet and MMS settings when I first booted it up. Is this what others are doing?

Yes, you are getting LTE on your phone
LTE = 4G in Europe
4G = H+ in Europe
3G
etc
If you do a speed test, you will see that you are getting LTE speeds on your phone
Problem here too. I just went in to get a nano sim. The guy hooked up my number from a note 2. Does not show data. He said I needed to put in my IMEI number from the box. I didn't from recommendations on here. The problem is that I didnt have a rebutle sp? Because I really don't know how it works. He said if my note 2 was lte, it should work. I don't know what the heck to do

I would try again, maybe try to get a different service rep. The IMEI from an AT&T Note 2 should work.
Anyone successfully connect to the old cingular apn? It won't let me get a 3G data connection (I get signal bars with an exclamation point on the icon). If I force 2G, it will fully connect to edge. Then if I select 3G as my preferred network type the signal icon switches to 3g then H and then back to the exclamation point all very quickly. I have tried a couple apn settings without any luck. Since I'm getting service, but it won't give me data, is there something baked in the phone not allowing me to connect? I can put the sim in my old phone (optimus g) and it connects fine.
I can connect to the normal "nxtgenphone" apn but I don't want to right now.
any help or thoughts on this would be appreciated
isnt cingular the old tmobile? cingular doesnt exist anymore from what i understand, so you cant expect to connect to it.
Cingular is ATT now.

I can connect to the att apns, but my download speed is a whopping 0.5 Mbps. Connecting to cingular apn, which I can do with my old phone, at least gets me back into 3g speeds.
Are you on an lte provisioned account? If so the older apn's are locked out. Att did this because of the ability to bypass the throttle restrictions when on an unlimited plan. As far as the apn that works for 2g, that's probably the mms network.

Check the attached screenshot for the APN settings, even though its called ATT. Its worth double checking. Otherwise, two things should happen - find your old phone and get them to reprovision your account to work with the old APN, or troubleshoot with them and find out why you're getting such **** data speeds.

Are you on an older unlimited Nation plan or Family talk plan with unlimited data? If so, your speeds are being throttled after surpassing 3gb. Those download rates are tell tale. AT&T has blocked APNS other than NXTGENPHONE for those using a capable LTE device for the reasons mentioned above . If you were to change the APN to regular 3g ATTPhone or Cingular WAP. Your account is auto provisioned to reduce speeds.
Yeah throttling is the issue. Just strange I can go through cingular with a different lte capable phone.

Using a Family Share Plan I had connected via the default AT&T APN. I believe it was AT&T "phone" APN. However, I recently switched to my company provides AT&T Corporate Mobile Share Plan, and I had to switch my APN to AT&T "PTA" APN in order to get LTE to work. This is what I'm currently using on my Nexus 6. AT&T's NXTGENPHONE APN did work for me when I was running the 5.0 Developer Preview on my Nexus 5 on the AT&T Corporate Plan. However I lost the settings for it. Does anyone have a listing of the APN settings for it? I would like to compare speed tests.
