Hi all and a special thanks to Paul for his work on the O2X.
My previous phone was a HTC Desire, and with a great video guide I was able to put the Defrost ROM on it (Very easy), witch was the best thing I had ever done to the Phone.
So of cause I really want to do the same with my O2X.
I have read all threads in this forum, and I'm ready to put on a custom ROM on my O2X.
But is it to soon if I'm looking for a stable version?
And when I read this tread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007863
And read something like this "READ THESE CAREFULLY!", I'm getting nervous that I might do something wrong and ruin my new Phone.
Would i be possible for someone to just list each step I need to do to get a working custom ROM on my phone?
Some thing like this, or maybe someone with some spare time could make a cool youtube video going through the steps?
Something like this:
Root the phone (Link)
Do something (Link)
...
...
All done!
Just do as the guide for the custom rom says... If you read carefully and follow the steps provided you're safe. Flash recovery first...
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
I asked this question over at Modaco... http://android.modaco.com/content/lg-optimus-2x-2x-modaco-com/336019/root-before-recovery/
Paul gave me a short guide which was helpful, and the ROM thread gives step by step guide...... BTW this should be in the General section not development!
I will try tonight, and follow the guides and hopefully get it to work without make any damage to the phone
hi
i had a Samsung galaxy 3 which is used by my wife now that i got the Mi 410
i have also been a very active member of the forum
u see in this forum their are a few rom cooking tutorials which has created many rom cooks and thus many roms for us to use
I humbly request on the guys with knowledge on the same to provide a tutorial on how to cook Roms for our great phone so we could have much more development for our phone for example see below SG3 development forum and ud see what i mean

[dsixda's kitchen]
This is the best kitchen I have found out. (To have rooted ROM, w/o any bloatwares, bash, de-odexing, and many more options)
You need to modify the updater-script file to a greater extent before using custom ROM developed by this kitchen, otherwise there is a possibility to brick your phone.
Though I have found out the correct parameters or changes to this and could build a custom ROM of my own. (fully functional ), but please allow me some time because creating a new thread takes a lot of time. Such that there are no loopholes and nobody should suffer any losses from the tutorial.
Since currently I have a huge office work load, I will post a tutorial soon as I had mentioned before in some other thread.

Just go through the this thread:
[dsixda's kitchen]
for brief details:
dsixda's Android Kitchen
Compatible with Windows (Cygwin) / Linux / Mac OS X
Who is this kitchen for?
Those who are brand new to creating custom ROMs and want an easy place to start learning
Those who just want to modify shipped ROMs or someone else's custom ROMs to their liking
Those who are confused by all those scripts and complex commands required for building and extracting

Please check: [GUIDE]dsixda's Android Kitchen - Now with Huawei Ideos X6 support(Windows/Linux/Mac)
Supports for cooking stock ROM or custom ROM built on Stock. Not supported for Cyanogenmod or MIUI releases.
Hey Napstar! I have ported Galaxy Mini CM ROM to my Galaxy Y. I have zipped the folder after replacing Kernel and editing several files but when i try to flash it from my stock recovery I get errors like:
assert failed: write_rawimage("/temp/boot.img" ,"boot")
E:Error in /temp/sideload/package.zip
(Status7)
I think something is wrong with the MANIFEST-INF folder in zipped rom.
Can you tell me how to make a new MANIFEST-INF folder for my ROM.
Waiting for reply...................................................
Hey Guys...
First of all - I am Amazed by the level of this forum... Its truly great...
I am Very new to XDA. I Still managed to figure out essential things for my captivate.
I spent straight 8 to 10hrs [Approx a Month ago] reading and searching variety of threads, links and videos and got the Idea about rooting, Custom ROM, Flashing etc...
[I must Repeat - "Just Idea", Because having no real background and knowledge about anything related to these things... I obviously feel like Still Missing a lot of basic terms]...
Anyways - Point for explaining all that is to Make my 'Beginner' Level clear... B'coz Members here called as beginners are also quite good with all these basic terms...
I am using 'LANIGHT' ROM right now...
Now the problem is... There are still some bugs in this version... [Camera, SMS, etc]
So the question is:
1. The Best, latest and most stable version of ROM out there - which would be great for beginners like us? [We can have this thread for the updates of such ROM time to time] - For Us - This part seems very difficult to figure out...
2. Also the process of installing that ROM...
3. And if there is a quick way to figure out the 1st question in forum... Except spending hours just reading the threads... Very very difficult work... [Hats of to you guys...]
Thanks in advance...

1. This question can't be answered. For many reasons but mainly because the Best ROM for you, that feels in your needs and such won't be the same as let's say, the best ROM for me. The best you can do if look at the features list and go through the last few pages of the ROM to know about the bugs/issues. There isn't a perfect ROM, just gotta find the one that suits you the best.
2. Follow the ROM's instructions in the OP (Don't forget the Gapps)
3. Refer to #1. Also, for respect for the Devs and to avoid flaming, threads like these often get closed.
Hey, we all start somewhere
Welcome and BWolf gave you some very sound advice. I've been flashing new ROMs pretty much on a daily basis this week to find the ROM that suits me the best. Enjoy flashing and playing around with different ROMs. The nice thing about this phone is that pretty much there are ways to revive it if something "happens."

Dude hats off to you. Very correct. Even I flash ROMs almost daily. The worst thing ever happened to me was a boot loop and a home made jig saved me. Now I have a confidence that nothing can stop my phone.

Choosing a rom is a hit and trial method. Just go to captivate android development forum and choose any rom which looks good download it and flash it using recovery. Most common thing is clockwork mod recovery to install any ROM. keep flashing different roms until you find the one that suits you. Happy flashing.

I used to hold off buying a jig... until I truly needed one. Thanks to one click odin and heimdall, if anything happens, then you're always good to flash back to stock and try again
I highly recommend a jig as it can save you from a LOT of headache.

You can buy one or build it yourself. It's a great investment and insurance plan
Feel free to flash whatever Captivate ROM you like, just pay attention to the flashing procedures in each thread (as Bwolf said).

Beginners like you? IMHO, there are lots of different beginners and you haven't shared enough for me to know what kind of beginner you are.
By recent and best, do you mean that you just want a stock ROM, perhaps rooted, but otherwise pretty much the same as the last stock release, Gingerbread KK4? It is 'recent' - because it is the latest and final official release, more recent than earlier releases.
Or do you want a ROM that is unofficial, won't be supported by your carrier or by Samsung, but that runs Jelly Bean 4.2 with an occasional bug or broken feature?
Beginner is relative to the field in question, yes? An Olympic gold medal swimming winner in his first year in medical school is a beginner at surgery,
Do you excel at really carefully reading and understanding all instructions before you start on a task?
So, if you are starting as a complete newbie, maybe go for KK4 Gingerbread and add the Corn Kernel. Get stable with that. Get comfortable making nandroid backups, and using root browsers to back up efs and other folders. get comfortable moving the files to your pc, to the external sd card, etc.
After getting all the stuff backed up with good knowledge about how to restore it all, then go flash a stable 4.1 or 4.2 jelly bean rom. you will need to flash twice. oh, and get gapps, too.
does this all sound like jibberish? read the sticky threads, read the glossaries, etc,.
If you're looking for a ROM with a lot of UI and benchmark improvements, Captivating by Sephi looks great, although I haven't tried it myself. No one here really wants to pick 1 specific ROM, because everyone is different and don't want to be rude to the dev's .
Flashing ROMs on the Captivate is fairly simple, and as others have stated if you have a jig (if you don't want to buy one pre-made, you can make your own w/o soldering, there's a guide in this forum for it), you can just play around with different ROMs and can almost always fix the phone if anything bad should happen.
Just browse XDA until you find one that you think you may like, read the reviews, and try it out for yourself
I recommended Captivating ROM by she phi.. U will not disappointed

HI every body
thanks for everybody that works hard to get us these amazing stuff ...
first of all , i`m not a developer nor an expert or have any good knowledge about developing ... but i really want to enjoy these great roms and tweaks as everybody else .. so i have 2 suggestions that i really think that will help anybody just like me :
the first one is when a developer release a new rom , i really need a step by step installation method with links for every kernal or anything needed to install it ... ( i came up with this suggestion after i tried yesterday to switch from a rom to carbon rom , but unfortunatly the installation failed even after an other member tried to help me and gave me instructions what to try to install it )
maybe alot of you thinks that is a silly suggestion , but believe me that there is people like me that dont know about developing and want to enjoy these roms
the second suggestion that if you could make a thread that contains all developers roms and kernals and any other stuff and group it like : ( best roms for games ) or ( best visual looking roms )or anything like that ...
i don`t know if this is allowed in the xda forums .. but if it is , then it would be great .....
i know that some members will tell me to try it by myself .. but believe me i love to try roms by myself but i really dont understand every feature in every rom , actually i dont understand most of the features .. so if you do this suggestion it would be great
thanks again for everyone that works hard at this great forum , we all appreciate your work ... hope that you continue the great work

Hello.
1. Each new ROM, Old or New will always have complete installation procedure in the OP Page 1. Failure to install Rom can be reported in the thread or try addressing the dev directly.
2. I'll tell you this before our forum moderator tells you. Best Roms and such are in violation of XDA rules thus not allowed in XDA. Our kind developers created lots of ROMS for us users with the "BEST" interest thus it's up to us entirely to choose which ROM suits our preferences best. And since many of them are busy with their actual real life, I don't think any of them has time to maintain these 'links to here and there' thread. It's our user's duty to search and learn by ourselves and finally post a valid question in this forum. No offence really but your request is basically like asking your teachers to do your assigned homework.

about the the installation procedure .. not every rom has specific information about needed kernals or recovery mods (specially ) ...
and about the teacher thing .. i said that im sure that somebody will come and tell me that i should do it by myself and test the roms ... but to let you know that i tested 4 roms in just 10 days and tried to test the 5th but couldn`t install it ... thnx anyway

Not wanting to debate, but for kernels it's already stated that always use a safe kernel. When you come from a TW based kernel. Philz kernel is the best option to choose. As in KK roms, always flash a Raw 4/5 first as a base kernel, reboot to recovery n then u can always flash philz latest KK compatible recoveries (V.6.0.4 up) to do all wipes and formats before flashing rom. If you flash recent roms starting with 4.1 up, these are mandatory steps to take. The rest does not really matter.
Again I mean no offence, but I think you can see that each devs has painfully written all instructions in their OP so that's why I think it's really not fair for us to ask total guidance like that. And since you are able to flash test that many rom, u should already know what to ask in this forum.Again no offence meant. Thanks

Hi guys
Enough of the bootanimations now I have done way too may and now I want to learn about building ROM. I want to design my own custom ROM, want to create it's own Kernel (just for information how to be advanced ) create own custom recovery, setting up GApps support editing updater script, build.prop everything.
I am a BIG TIME NOOB in programming so I want that I should be told every step of how to program even commands (kidding)
But I really have no idea with programming that much. All I know is to use dsixda's kitchen and few other NORMAL tweaks.
I know that there are all sorts of guides out there by great people like doomlord, mjraider etc( sorry know these two names only)
I want a full compact and complete package of links if anyone can provide me pretty please! I have searched s lot and all I found i was a big ZERO.If you are gonna say that it requires patience the test me I have a lot and dedication towards my work I'm a quick learner (proof you know as my bootanimations) so please bear with me ONCE! Provide a compelete set of BEST GUIDES OUT ON XDA FORUM and youtube video links if any that can teach how to to build a custom rom in which I can carry out themeing and other tweaks such as modding the status bar and battery icons etc. How to set my signature on ROM. EVERYTHING! I don't know much but you guys know what to cover in everything! SO PLEASE MY HUMBLEST REQUEST TO ALL JUST BEAR WITH ME ONCE I WILL BE HIGHLY OBLIGED!
Special Request to Mjraider : Sir I know you occasionally visit these threads and answer the questions, you are one of the biggest names here so please consider my request and help me once, I will be highly obliged:victory::angel:
