I'm currently running a rooted stock ICS w/Chainfire kernel.
I'm going to try one of the leaked JB (LSA to be exact) along with the associated Philz kernel.
My only concern is that if I don't like or have too many problems with JB and I want to go back and restore my ICS nanadroid backup.
Question: IF I do need/want to restore my ICS backup from JB, would I run the restore from Philz kernel or reload back Chainfire kernel and then do restore?
Thanks
Restore from philz kernel will do the job

Restoring my CWM recovery will do..its just like restoring a Restore Point in PC (here even the data will be restored)..

SGS kernel flasher says not supported. With so many kernels out there for us, is there any simple way of flashing kernels back and forth other than Odin?
Think we got to stick to cwm for now.
Sent from my ICS powered Captivate
this would be just restoring system?
A nandroid backup will backup your kernel. I've never used sgs kernel flasher or Odin since there's no point if you can just use cwm

That requires backing up the entire rom, i just want to back up the kernel.
Nandroid does NOT backup kernel or modem. It only backs up System, Data, Datadata/dbdata, cache, and dalvik.

But when you restore one, you end up on the kernel you had in that backup

Here is the CM9 ICS Kernel from #13. You can keep this on your sdcard and flash it anytime easily. It is only the kernel and will not mess with any other settings. So if you decide to try out a different ICS kernel and want to swap back just flash this CM9 KERNEL REVERTER http://db.tt/o1IOmK4d

No, it doesn't -_-

Yes it does. I can do a miui flash from any stock rom, restore my nandroid, and not only am i back to a platypus kernel, but it has the same oc/uv, g governor and scheduler as before flashing to stock. Try it,i think you would be surprised. I don't know if it had to do with the version if cwm used or the type of ROM its used on. But i know it will restore a kernel.
Hi All,
This might look like a silly question but i am really curious to know.
If i make a nandroid backup with a speedmod k3-13 kernel, then i flash hydracore 5.4. i go to cwm and choose to restore the nandroid backup i made with speedmod, what will happen?
does the nandroid restore ... put the speedmod back in?
sorry for the example but all i wanted to ask was
is it ok to do a nandroid restore made a particular kernel to be restore on a different one ?

I haven't tested it on Note but I have tried it on my ealier phones (X10i, Optimus 2X , Desire) and it always worked fine.
Restoring backup will change the kernel too (the one included in backup).
so ideally it should just change the kernel that's included in the backup and restore normally right ?

Yes, ideally it will. basically it's like flashing a different rom, I have seen few developers distributing their roms as nandroid backup.
From my personal experience there could be issues if different version of CWM are used for bkup and restore.
I always do as follows and this way works for me with no issues:
1) bkup with any kernel
2) restore with speedmode or abyss 4.2
so if I backup with philz kernel and restore with speedmod won't that be diff version of cwm?
Hi all, so I'm currently looking for a way to go back to stock Touchwiz (4.0.3) from CM10.
I'm currently running CM10 and i do have a Nandroid backup from when I was on Touchwiz (and running PhilZ safe kernel), but the thing is I've been running CM10 for a few months and have a lot of new data stored on my phone.
So instead of backing up anything new and just restoring my backup, could i just flash a stock firmware through ODIN or CWM on top of CM10? Or if I tried that would I have to wipe anyway?
Thanks any help appreciated.
going back from custom to stock causes boot loops and a wipe will be necessary. so better do a nandroid backup of th current rom, then when in stock rom, use tb to restore data using the nandroid backup.

Ok this thread is dead but I will have to revive it now because I wanna do the same thing.
I have been on Cm10 and wanted to go to Alliance ROM today. So like a complete idiot I flashed pre-rooted KJ1 gingerbread ROM from Dr.Ketan over my CM10 and got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily had a nandroid backup and now restoring as I type.
What is the correct process to go from CM to stock GB or ICS?
Any and all help is appreciated
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Kaushik
EDIT: I flashed the pre-rooted GB ROM because I wanted to do a full wipe and then flash over to stock ICS and then to Alliance JB ROM.

Either flash using PC odin. after flashing if on GB, boot into recovery and do a factory reset. If on ICS, install a safe kernel (eg,Philz) and reboot recovery and do a factory reset,
OR
Flash a custom GB or ICS rom using recovery after all wipes and formats (system, data, cache)
Well,
I did update to JB 4,1,2 stock, but before i did a backup of the ICS (stock either) that I was in. Is there anyproblem I use that backup from JB stock rom? I'm using Philz kernel.

yes, that works fine. I restore mine a few days ago...the only different thing that I saw is that if you flashed with Odin PC and got bootloader updated, the CWM will first analize the partition, but then everything was working fine.
Hi
I want to return my Note to stock. When I first bought it I rooted it and made a nandroid of the stock ICS rom that was on it.
Since then I have installed Alliance Rom on Jellybean. Can I just restore the stock ICS nandroid straight over the JB rom or will this brick my phone? I've read that there's something about ICS stock kernels that can cause bricks so I'm a bit nervous about how to go about it.
I have already downloaded the two files from the unroot thread to remove superuser and binaries, do I just flash these after restoring the ICS nandroid? Also, how do I get back the stock recovery?
Sorry for such basic questions but I'm new to the Note and it's a bit different to flashing things on the One X which I came from.
Thanks x
yes.. you can restore the stock rom nandroid.. but i am not sure as Alliance JB LSZ use TWRP recovery and the backup you made may be using CWM.. so its better to install a CWM kernel on the rom... Like philz and then restore the rom,, for stock recovery you will need to install stock kernel..
but why go into so much trouble ... just install a stock ICS rom using pc odin.. (no wipes after installing stock ICS rom).. make all the wipes while on a safe kernel

Thank you very much for explaining, that's a big help
The Odin way does sound a bit easier, I'll look into it. Thanks for explaining about the ICS wiping problem.
Much appreciated
