Got my Exhibit 4G back when it was called something else at WalMart. Ran it the first two months on T-mobile with the stock rom and it was "eh", but the monthly cost was cheap and as long as I stuck to mainly text messages the phone was passable.
Now a year later I am on CM10 - which means the almost latest ROM on a phone that cost under $200. It runs faster and lasts longer on a charge than when I first got it - though partly that's because I now cheat and turn off the 3G/4G radio to use it only via WiFi. Still with Skype service I've had folks ask if I was borrowing my daughter's iPhone or my wife's Nokia - sound is pretty darn good.
So if you're looking for a good budget phone with a very active user community, you've found the right place!
I got mine about eight months ago on Family Mobile (I work at Walmart so I pay 30 bucks for unlimited everything) performance was good compared to my previous phone but not flyin. Now its basically a galaxy s2 with a smaller screen maybe even quicker

Any help or input tia
I am running camcory's slim bean rom with smartguy's 1.4 kernel oc'd to 1.6, 368 min, with smartassv2 governor. It runs super smooth and I have no complaints. Battery life is nice too and it seems really stable. I highly recommend you try slim bean rom and smartguy's kernel. Makes this phone a pleasure to use.
After a 100+ flashes this phone still works as good as the day i got it. An the color still looks good too unlike my other phones where it gets wore off on the corners. It has some minor scratches but dont use a case or screen protector. It has been by far the best phone i have ever owned. Most fun too thanks in large part to the devs.

Despite the ghosting thing that happens, the screen on the Galaxy Exhibit is really quite nice. I'm always impressed, and even a couple co-workers with an S3 and Note II have commented on how vibrant and crisp/clear the screen is.
This is only my 2nd Android. My first was the Optimus V and I cut my romming/rooting teeth on that thing. I haven't hit 100 flashes quite yet on the Exhibit, but I'm getting close!
The biggest thing that made the Optimus V such a fantastic little phone was the development community. When I bought the Galaxy Exhibit, I wasn't yet aware how great the development community was becoming. I had no idea I'd be running a smooth-ass port of Jellybean so soon. I have the same feeling about the Exhibit as I did for the Optimus V.
It's nice when a boom in development affords you the opportunity to feel like you have a new phone (sometimes many times over), when in fact it's the same piece of hardware you've had tucked away in your pocket for months, or even more a year in some people's case.

Since running SlimBean, I no longer overclock. I have the regular Camcory CM10 kernel that comes with it. It's very fast, and I always have more than 100MB of free RAM (this will of course vary on your personal apps).
But it's really so quick and smooth at stock speed, I feel no need to mess with overclocking. I've tried the OC'd kernel with CM10. On CM10, it made a big difference in eliminating a lot of the lag. On SlimBean, I don't really feel or see a difference. Honestly. I realized the slickness I was experiencing with SlimBean and the OC kernel was placebo, when I reflashed SlimBean without the OC kernel and it was just as quick and slick.
there is no placebo effect when you flash my kernel haha just playing but slim is fast with an oc kernel

Sorry man! Should have worded that one better. Don't want anyone to think your kernel doesn't do anything. lol. Cause it certainly does. When I was running CM10, along with a lot more apps, Speedy Gonzalez certainly made a significant difference. Since I've been running Slimbean, I've purposely kept things slim across the board. Minimal apps, and using stock stuff that I used to replace (keyboard, browser, etc).
When you keep it slim, Slimbean flies with it's stock kernel. So for ME, it was placebo, but only in that slimmed down Slimbean configuration. I'm started to add a few more apps now and I'm already feeling the sluggishness creep in, and I'm almost ready to flash Speedy Gonzalez again!
haha its cool man i didnt take it wrong i was just messing with you....you are right tho with some roms its not needed but its great to have....slim is well slim so its blazing fast any way same with the rom im working on its fast to out of the box
This topic is nice, but I have no clue what some of these stuff mean.
Only thing I even considered doing was to root the stock rom, then flash it to peach sunshine via cwm 6.x
Does this topic mean that doing above will not help much and it will still be laggy? What are some of the things you guys mentioned like overclocked kernel (can it run with any rom, how can I install one? Or can I install one on top of stock rooter rom?)
Like "Smartguy's 1.4 Kernel", "Overclocked to 1.6" "368 Min", "Smartassv2 Governor"
Is it that SG's 1.4 kernel allows overclocking or can you overclock stock kernel?
What is the stock processor setting does it actually go below 368? And of course what is Smartassv2 Governer?
Sorry if I asked too many questions, but I just got this phone for my wife and even though she doesn't seem to complain, I can see that the phone gets laggy once you have two or three apps running (and I try to have her keep Skype or IM+ running all the time so we can chat, we don't have texting plan)
Any input/guidance will be very appreciated.
Thanks guys.
The sg kernel is for cm9 cm10 slimbean and so on. As basic rule has to be CM9/CM10 based rom. If using a stock based rom such as peach you won't be able to overclock. Icecream and jellybean Roms are all pretty decent with multi tasking and don't really need overclocking. Smoothass is the governed to use as smartass v2 has been k own to cause probs

I am running MIUI ICS with Doadin's Custom 2.6.35 Kernel and it flies! (as much as a device with 384MB of ram can fly) buttery transitions, sleek sexy interface, definitely a must-try for our device.

I just got a Galaxy Tablet (t-mobile).
I am familiar with rooting (have a droid incredible running Lou's Revolution "Senseless" Rom and Kernels).
The tablet is going to be a family device. I want to avoid going through the process of trying Roms as I did with my incredible..
What is the most stable Rom that will provide good performance and battery life for running Launcher Pro? WiFi connectivity is very important - dialing or fancy phone agumentations are not necessary (only using this as a wifi device).
Thanks.

I'm wondering this as well. So far, I have rooted, ran OCLF, and pretty much everything else is stock T-Mobile. I use my tab for surfing, blogging, streaming video and music from my media center, and ebook reading. I use it regularly all day every day.
It goes for about a day and a half before I charge it. I have an iPad that my daughter uses. It'll go 2 full days easily.
I have not had a single issue that required me to reboot since I got the tab over a week ago.
Realistically, Is there a single mod out there for the galaxy tab that can say this? Will Overcome behave this well?
Of course, I'd love it to be faster when I've got several web pages loaded. I'd love better battery life, too. I don't want either of these things if I have to wonder if/when the OS is going to explode, or reboot on me all the time. I guess I would consider a couple reboots a week to be acceptable.
Are these expectations realistic for modded firmware?
I've been using Overcome for a few weeks now, and haven't had a single reboot. My battery life is slightly lower, in that I use the Tab as my phone as well. So, the constant cell radio usage trims my battery life down to 24 hours or so.
Otherwise it's far snappier and responsive than stock (T-Mobile) especially overclocked to 1.4ghz and undervolted. Keep in mind, that flashing a Euro Rom (as you're thinking of doing) will change your Build.Prop... essentially changing how the Market and Apps see your device model listed. Which can be good and bad.
Gameloft for example, has more games available for the GT-P1000 than it does the SGH-T849 (T-Mobile Tab ID)...which is great, however I had to change my Build.Prop back to stock, to be able to use Samsung Media Hub on my device.
I have a similar question, but for the Sprint version.

I notice that you have a g-tablet. How would you compare the two tabs from a performance and stability standpoint?
Well...the Tegra2 in the GTab flies...for sure. I don't notice much performance difference between my overclocked Tab (and ext4) and it tho. Quadrant avg for GTab is around 1900-2100...Galaxy Tab hitting 1700-1900
Main issue I have with the GTab is the screen. Seems like they ripped an lcd from a netbook and put it in the GTab. Quality of the Galaxy Tab's screen is much better.
Battery life is good, considering. Had to replace the Rom immediately, cuz stock out of box made the device barely usable. Seems to handle video just fine, however my wife sitting next to me on a plane trip had a hard time watching the movie at an off angle.
Gaming is fluid, tho I haven't tried the Tegra games as of yet. The GTab is heavy with prolonged use...tho most 10 inchers will be. Otherwise, for the price...and with the support the devs are giving it...it's worth it. Although...I think my main device will end up being the 8.9 inch Galaxy Tab, the size just seems to be the perfect bridge between the 7 and 10 inch tablets.
I have not loaded any roms, only rooted and flashed MaDaCo kernel only. Its fast and everything works great. I have not found any ROMs that I would consider flashing. The stock ROM works fine with a new kernel. Problem is also that the Tab development section has come to a hault. Nothing really new for a long time

I agree...not a ton of NEW stuff coming along....but Alterbridge has been steadily updating his Overcome Rom & Kernel...it's a stable daily driver. And, one guy (not sure how legit it is) has been working on HC port for the Tab...and said he'd be finished with rough draft in another week or two. (crosses fingers)
The ONLY reason I flashed a Rom was to enable Phone activities on my Tab. Otherwise, not a huge reason to go beyond stock firmware...Kernel upgrade is a must, however! Effin Sammy won't pull it's head out of it's arse and get rid of RFS format, so converting to ext4 is a huge performance tweak.

You must have had some serious good luck with your gtablet. Apps on mine FC'd a dozen times a day, it randomly rebooted, and wouldnt sleep. I had vegan 5.1.1 loaded. It drove me nuts. Im a little 'rom shy' now. Lol.
On a side note, i dont notice much difference in performance between my unmodded tab and the gtablet. If anything, the tab is snappier and infinately more stable. The thing about a modded rom that scares me the most is lack of stability. Id blame my gtablet issues on myself, but i bought it already modded - from one of the vegan devs.
. . . sent from my iPad 2 running Windows Phone 7
No doubt...GTab FC's happen, and some of that can be attributed to the Roms...tho I daresay it's more about the device itself.
The only FC's or reboots I've had on the Tab is when I mess overly much with the voltage settings.
I have had zero issues with Overcome ROM/Kernel, even with OV/UV applied. I also like how he is constantly updating his work, as stated in a previous reply.
I added Roto's modem switcher and used the SIM hack, and I have full phone functionality with my G1 SIM on my tmo tab.
Yep, im a Overcome fan for both rom and kernel. Not a single problem so far.
My TMO tab is coming in tomorrow, is it still the consensus that the Overcome 1.2 ROM, or rather Overcome 1.6.3 now, is the best bet?
I'll be making a full Roto Backup before playing with it so hopefully it won't be a problem going back to stock from Overcome 1.2 if need be.

We are up to Overcome 1.6.4 now.
Thanks, dude, post had been updated...anyway the question remains.
Overcome 1.6.4 ROM/Kernel are your best choice. You won't regret flashing it over.
Thanks, will do some downloading to be all set tomorrow when it comes in.
Agree, Overcome was rock solid easy to install. My SGT on tmous, is very stable.

OK, its time to upgrade my trusty DHD.....
...but what gets my hard-earned (no, really) pennies?
To me there are 4 options........
1) HTC One X
2) Samsung Galaxy Note
3) Wait until the 30th and get the Samsung Galaxy SIII
4) Keep the DHD for another 12 months and benefit from a cheaper contract.
So, if it was your pennies getting spent, where would they be going?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I love my note. It's definitely my favorite phone out of the 8 smartphones I've owned (iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, HTC Sensation, Samsung Vibrant, LG G2X). The downside? It is the most disappointing phone development wise. There doesn't seem to be any good ROM out there. Stock is painfully slow. There is no CM7 which is really disappointing. Any of the ICS I've seen out has had major problems which is why I haven't upgraded yet. There are horror stories about people bring their phones when upgrading to ICS and so far it doesn't seem to be a small number of people which is really sad. Samsung is JUST rolling out ICS now but I've heard stock ICS is also very slow and if you have CWM on or from what I understand have rooted your phone at all, you run a huge risk of bricking if you try put ICS on.
TL DR; If you don't mind staying stock for a WHILE, get the Note because it's awesome having a huge screen, resolution, and the SPen.

I flashed tons of ROMs and back to stock. At least I won't be bricking my phone this way.

To the OP: If I were you, I would get the One X or the S3, depending on the needs. Like I need the sd card and removable battery so it would rather be the S3 for me. Assuming you haven't used the note for long, both these phones must feel great to you. For almost all of us here, they are just too darn small. Once you use a note, you just get addicted to it.

Thanks guys. Keep them coming.
I played with the Note and the HOX today and liked them both, but the huge Note battery is drawing me towards it.
I'm 6'1" and have hands like pan-shovels so the size of the Note isnt a -ve to me.
love mine too!
Yeah loving the bigger screen. I'd never go back to something smaller.
On a different note.. (haha) had mine a month and have rooted and switched the rom and Kernel.. wasn't very hard just had to get over the mind set of bricking it.
Buy one!
Note, large screen, s-pen apps (if you're inclined to use them), some good roms, ICS development with the new builds should be on their way soon
the rest? S3, rather than 1x. or at least wait till reviews come out comparing the 2.
wait
wait for Galaxy S3 - I allready have it and It's awsome!!!

The Note is fabulous - better than the GNex I came from. Why? The screen principally - the Galaxy nexus screen just seemed so small compared!
I think the answer is this:
1. If you want the latest tech - go for the One X or the S3.
2. However, as it's so early in their life cycle you don't know what problems they will have (other than we already know the OneX has cr*p battery life) and we all know that no phone is perfect. Each phone I've had (and I've had a few) has had it's own unique issue.
3. If screen size is important, forget the other two and go for the Note. There is just simply no question of that (until Note II is announced in future!)
Maybe quad core will be a bit faster than dual core but I doubt it will make much of a difference in everyday use. In any event, I hate TW / Sense etc so always remove that bloatware and, hey presto, android flies on the Note (not that it was sluggish with TW).
And the lack of reliable ICS at the moment? In the words of Catherine Tate (look her up if you're not British!) - am I bovvered? There's such a clamour for it and, yes, it's a bit prettier and more logical in places but GB is absolutely fine for 99.98%.
Just my £0.02. Good luck with the decision.
Edit: Just seen that you're a brit - no need to look up Catherine Tate! More importantly, just realised you've got a DHD. Move on, you won't be disappointed. Sure, tech will move on over the next few monts, years etc but it always does.

Thanks for that. I agree with your assessment, especially ICS which is definitely leaving me underwhelmed in terms of how "un-different" (new word!) it is to GB, especially after having used Honeycomb on my tablet for the past 6 months.
I've decided (with a feeling of I'm cheating on a loved one) to get a Note online, then I can return it under distance selling laws if I find it unbearable to live with. I suspect it wont be going back.
Genuinely, many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Your insight has been much appreciated.

I love the large screen and battery of the Note.
The S3 is more future proof, but only because of the processors. RAM is the same.
One thing in the s3's favor is the LED notification light! w00t! I have been missing this on EVERY device that wasn't a blackberry!
The s3 also has a large battery, but .. the Note takes the cake.
The One X is out of the picture. Why? Removable battery. Also, they pushed the device so fast to get it out on the market as one of the first quadcore devices that ... well, to me it doesn't seem that attractive. The s3 on the other hand looks mighty fine!
The Note is awesome for its screen and battery size (as well as the S-Pen).
It's really your call... Sometimes I wish my note were a tiny bit smaller, but I don't regret it when I'm actually using it! hehe.
I upgraded from DHD to galaxy note and can say it was the upgrade. Absolutely amazing display over DHD, much better battery life, faster, smoother, much better camera, etc. When I look back now to already my wife's DHD, it seems to be a nice small phone ... Was able to replace most of work on my laptop with note thanks to Swype ...
I have both on stock ROM, didn't find need to go for ICS on my note. Everything is working flawlessly, maybe will change my mind half year later when there will be more positive reaction from community ... my few cents .

One thing that's driving me mad is the sluggishness of the stock Gingerbread ROM. Is the official ICS ROM still sluggish?
If so, would rooting the phone and deleting some of the bloat help? Also, is it possible to remove Touchwiz from the official ROM? I'm a bit scared to try any other ROMs in case I brick my phone.
I've had my note since november and I love it!! The huge screen is so much fun and great to surf the web!!! It doesn't feel bigger in my pocket than my previous phone (iPhone). Even though it has a huge screen the battery life is really good (especially with my actual rom Criskelo)
I haven't tried the other phones you posted but I am still trying to understand why anyone would need a quadcore in his phone today!! I installed spy cpu on my SGN and my CPU almost never rises to 1400MHz so what could anyone do with the extra power maybe 3D games since I don't play any so can't tell about the performances but I doubt it since the note still has one of the best processors out there! The games I play are: solitaire, temple run, fruit ninja,...

I don't really notice the sluggishness, everything seems smooth!! The rom I am using is lighter than the stock rom so there may be a difference! If you wan't to remove Touchwiz you'd better install a new rom on your phone would be easier than to modify the stock rom! In either case you need to root your phone! At first didn't want to do it but in the end I am happy and giving some good feedback about the rom I am using! And the bricking is pretty rare!!
To install a new rom if you literally follow instructions you can't run into problems!! A bit of research and in the end it just takes 10/15min to change rom!

That's an easy one. Root and install one of the stock rooted GB Roms. No need to 'remove' TW. Just install another launcher (let's not start the 'which launcher is best' argument here) and then set that as default. TW will fade into the background and won't be used and your Note will be faster.

Only 2100mah I think? Not that big - nearly 20% smaller than the Note.

I'm with the stock LG ROM on the LG Thrill.
Can I do something to make my phone faster.
Yes roms and the right tweaks and this phone is awesome

A custom ROM will make your phone run faster. There are you can tweak the build.prop and other things like scripts to improve the phone as well. Right now I just flashed the Mokee v1.0 ROM and it is the best ROM I have ever used on this phone. I would definitely recommend getting a CM7 ROM as long as you don't care about 3D and HDMI as they are broken currently with CM7.
I find the phone quite snappy, but then again I'm coming from a Samsung Epic. That phone was good but is getting very long in the tooth. I'm using Thrillseeker 2.1 on mine and so far I can say yes, it does improve the phone's speed. Next on the to try list is CM7(which is downloading on my phone as we speak). It's a boring day at work, might as well be productive, right?

The right kernel is really all you need ... But you need to know about basebands also if you wanna get into that .. if you wanna keep it simple just download a few different roms and see what works best for you

hi dude can you explain further about that scripts and how to usw that? tnx a lot dude
Actually, I've been fighting this for a while.
Sometimes the phone is blazing, other times it chugs like molasses.
I've slowly chipped away at the issues, because it's obvious not everybody has these issues, but considering how many times I've tried custom ROMs and kernels, and nothing fixes it, it has to be something I'm running.
Over time, I got rid of Folder Organizer, because that seemed to make it chug. The device seems to have very little RAM and it goes REALLY slow when it's close to full. I also tried things like deleting the downloaded files for the GameLoft titles to speed up the media search on boot. (Less files searched, less RAM used, right?)
Recently one change I made that seemed to help IMMENSELY was uninstalling SwiftKey. I'd LOVE if I could get some help confirming. The circle-swipe to unlock seems much smoother, even after a day, after getting rid of SwiftKey. I'm guessing it just used too much RAM.
At this point, I'd be at a lost otherwise. I changed launchers and used CPU monitors to see what's using up all the CPU, but came up empty.
Additionally, if you haven't tried using Seeder, I'd install that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987032

Hi notmevlak!
Yes i totally agree, the Galaxy S is still a very attractive phone and is imo still better than most budget phones in the same price range. I have been running many different roms i all generations (gb, ics and currently jb) and I have to say that JB is amazing on the galaxy S. Iam currently running a stock rom ported from the Galaxy nexus with a galaxy s3 theme (Launcher and everything) and It's silky smooth! Almost no lags at all if youre thinking about the UI.
You can find that rom on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1902777
The best way to find a rom that suits your needs is to try them all. I see myself as a real flasholic hehe, it's like youre getting a new phone each time
Good luck! And if youre wondering about anything else, feel free to ask!

In short, no. There is not a single rom out there that won't lag at all. Apps are getting more and more cpu intensive as hardware specs improve. Even low grade androids now have duo core cpus.

I thought 1ghz single core is enough, i don't really play any games or use any hardcore intensive apps. Thats why I wanna cheap phone, but I hate ICS/GB androids lagging. Is rly every jb rom lagging? I think I should go for some cheap wp7.5 phone then
What does lag mean to you?

I guess part of the answer is related to how you define 'lag'...
I have been running CM10 for about a month or so and been really impressed with how fast my GalaxyS runs on Jelly Bean. I haven't tried some of the other roms because CM10 does everything I need really well. I am coming from the earlier GB 2.3.3 version and for me, JB is way faster on this phone. From my experience, similar to many other posts I have read, installing JB was like getting a new phone.
In reality, some apps take a a few seconds to load and you can tell when a given app is taxing the system but to me this is acceptable knowing we only have a single core processor and 512 Mb. I can listen to any song, watch any youtube video and play most games and apps I have tried. It's not perfection and certainly a dual core or quad core rig with 2 gig of memory would be better but you won't get anything like that for $100 or less.
I would never consider a win phone simply because it would be pretty much a dead end for apps...while this phone can still run any app I have tried short of the super intensive games that need a tegra or something...
Will I get a new phone when my contract is up? Sure, if its free. Will this phone do me for another year until then? I'm pretty sure it will...
FYI: CM10 just updated to JB 4.1.2 last night...only a day after it was released for the Nexus 7.
My 2 cents...
Try codename-3.6.5 finally
Mix from Aokp ROM & Aosp ROM

atm i have the galaxy s, had it since it came out and haven't upgraded since (either didn't feel the need to or too financially challenged lol).
Anyhow, I was on GB roms for ages but changed to JB ones (skipped ICS altogether), and i gotta say the SGS does a fine job running JB. If you're worried about lag and battery problems, I can safely say that the phone handle JB beautifully. You'll probably need to charge the phone at the end of every day but there's not worries about lag or any other issues. Battery drain was my main concerning but I've figured out that you can get the phone lasting off one charge if you turn off wifi and 3G when you aren't using the internet. You won't be able to play games on it for hours but i barely use the phone for games since im bored of them all.
Thinking of selling my gs3 to get some bills handled and was impressed at how cheap this phone was and the development for it. I had this phone a year ago before there was even ICS for it. I understand its not going to perform like my gs3 but bow buttery smooth is.

I prefer cm10linero optimized odex version with blood kernel and feel it is silky smooth. There is so many ROMs out that it is a candy store with something for every taste. 4.1.2 version is standards now with 4.2 in works. Bang for bucks this cell has been very good and beyond reliable to me.

take it from someone who also came from the s3...this phone isnt to bad considering what it is....obviously the camera isnt as good the screen size sucks ass but with cm,pa,aokp etc and an oc kernel its tolerable
Is there any one working on touch wiz 5.0 for ICS/jellybean? Touch wiz on gingerbread sucks but since ICS+ wiz has really become nice practical minus the stupid zoom in and out by swyiping the side...really Samsung?

Pretty much what I was going to say right to the last word (except I haven't owned an S3).
I should also throw in the fact that we have very little RAM, and it makes multitasking a pain in the ass at times, especially on ICS and JB. Or impossible at times, rather... A few small apps are usually fine, but that's about the limit. I've played with the minfree's to no end, adjusted the low-memory killer over and over to find a sweet spot, but I don't think one even exists here.
Basically what it comes down to is: If you want multitasking, expect lag/freezes. If you want performance, expect your apps to start over every time you switch back. Also expect to keep a task killer on deck at all times.
I'm currently running SmoothieJB with Tim1928's kernel and it's been a fantastic combo. Fast, stable, (relatively) decent multitasking and great battery life. It's one of the best experiences I've had on this phone, so much that I almost don't want to touch anything else in fear of losing what I've got... But deep inside, I'm a flashaholic. I will succumb to my temptations sooner or later.

I've heard that CM10 can have trouble with 3rd party camera aps, such as bank check deposit etc. Anyone found that? If so what is the best option for that? I haven't flashed to JB yet mainly because I don't want to lose that checking account option.
That has been brought up many times in past. My beat suggestion for a work around though may seem excessive would be to make a nandroid of a full functioning cm9 and use it for checking and use the cm10 or 10.1 as your daily. I know it isn't the answer liked but it will suffice.

Ok, so I have a dumb question. How easy is it to switch back and forth between CM10 and CM9? Would this mean flashing the ROM all the time? Since I've never done any ROM flash, being a total noob, I haven't experienced one flash much less trying to switch back and forth all the time.

Well if you had a nandroid of both, you could just restore either whenever you wanted to, provided that you make a nandroid every time you change something.
Hmmmm. Cumbersome just to have check deposit. I'll have to think on this for a while. I suppose it takes a few minutes each time: make nandroid in CM 10, flash CM 9, deposit check, flash CM 10 and do this for each check. I don't do checks very often so it may still be worthwhile.
Do you happen to know if this is an issue being addressed and just might be fixed for, say, a CM11 release?
