The touch pro 2 is a nice quality build. I used to feel the same way about touch screen devices, but after 2 years with the hd2 and now the Lumia 810, no longer even miss the keyboard. Using autocomplete and wordflow can make it easy. If you must have a keyboard, select carefully, as now those are on lower quality devices made by third rate manufacturers like LG. The best bet may be to get one of the wp7 devices with keyboard and update it to wp7.8 as its rather close to wp8, and you could get a great price. Hope the advice was helpful, good luck.

actually i hoped someone would say.. wait 2 month and nokia will present the windows communicator
or htc touch pro 8

Currently there are not even rumors of WP8 devices with physical keyboards. Actually the only "high-profile" Smartphone release with a physical keyboard is one of the 2 BB10 devices Blackberry will release in Q1 2013 and even that will release after the touch-only version.
It seems those devices simply didn't sell well.

so i might just give that lumia 920 a try?
shame that its not available in grey yet

de to an ongoing "discussion" in diamond about what a flagship device is, i thought id start a poll about which devices were flagship devices when released.
Flagship devices are decided upon by HTC - not us. Just search for "flagship" on their website, and see which devices come up.
i just thought id say that some of the devices there are placebos, in that i thought id add some that arent exactly in the running to be flagship devices seeing as they were released when there were technologically better devices available.
Rory
It'll be interesting to compare the results of this with the official list.
I think Diamond is the flagship right now. Kaiser is slowly getting "old". Diamond has accelerometers, so thats just cool. Its already preped for WM7.

I agree. I think that, at least in the US, the Hermes was much more of flagship in its time than the Kaiser/Tilt is now. Hermes was much more of a jump in tech from the Wizard than the Kaiser is from the Hermes.
The Touch Diamond is packing HTC's newest and greatest tech, so I'm sure it will be the company's flagship for some time to come.

What for the next six months! Because that’s the rate at which they are releasing their touch range of devices at the moment!

Yeah, I know. They seem to have a new, "latest and greatest" HTC phone every few months.
Personally I'm leaning towards jumping the HTC ship and getting a Sony Ericsson X1. That big screen and metal case look nice...plus I'd miss my sliding qwerty with a Touch line.

It should be noted that the Touch family has been designed with one-handed operation in mind, unlike any similar devices (as far as I'm aware). Bigger touchscreens and keyboards require both hands to be used easily, which means that they interrupt other things more.

If I was concerned with full time one handed operation, I wouldn't be using a Hermes right now.
As it is, everything about the Touch that made it so one hand friendly has been made available, via the excellent people on this site, to those of us who have the landscape sliders. If the mood should strike me, I could leave my Hermes closed permanently and just use the on screen keyboards and what not. With only one hand; that's what I do when I'm driving.
An analogy I thought of is like this: You're buying a pick up truck, and the V8 (400mhz Hermes/Kaiser) gets the same miles to the gallon (one handed operation, same screen size) as the V6 (200mhz Touch), yet the V8 can tow and do more (full slide out qwerty, stronger processor). Why not get the V8? Likewise, why limit myself to a one-hand centric Touch when a landscape slider can do both? It can function as a one-handed soft keyboard device, but it can also slide open landscape-wise and get down to some serious E-Mail and document composition when it's needed to.

Cost on these new WM biggies is negligible. They slated to be very close in price.
But I'm with you on the size and weight thing. The Diamond is a sleek little phone.

I'll see how the two feel next to one other. I've decided to go with the X1, and my wife will be getting the Diamond, so I'll be able to play with both of them.

Actually the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is virtually no bigger than the last touch phone the O2 Orbit2 / HTC Polaris / Touch Cruise, so no additional bulk to carry if you’re upgrading from them. And much smaller if it’s an upgrade from the TyTn range.
When compared to the Diamond, the extra 0.5 cm gives you a larger screen, bigger battery, and expandable memory along with the keyboard, a good trade off in my book!
Hey even the just the optional larger extended battery for the Diamond will probably add that much extra bulk.
As beautifu as the Diamond is, it cant be a flagship device, not with the HTC Touch Pro release date imminent, just by pure specs alone, that makes it HTC's next flagship device

Kaiser/Tilt worthy upgrade?

Any Tilt or Kaiser owners plan to upgrade to the Touch Pro 2? Does it seem like it would be a significant upgrade? I'm curious to what you fellow Tilt/Kaiser owners think...
I have the Tilt and have not upgraded to the Fuze. I was waiting for the next big thing that ATT was potentially was going to bring over and it seem like this is it. I love the device's design in every aspect; looks amazing physicaly. What i don't like is that they stuck it with a 3mp camera (and removed flash!). I absolutely love the 3.6" screen. Basically, i'm pretty sure i'll be upgrading (i saved my contract upgrade and rejected the Fuze for this reason).
Yeah, I'm going to buy Touch Pro2, the reasons why, larger screen, better hardware, 5-row keyboard, looks very very cool, more finger-friendly.
iphone. if lack of a hw keyboard is not a deal breaker. After owning 2 winmo phones (currently using a tilt) and modding many other peoples iphones, i can honestly say that the iphone is superior in usability/apps/stability. after drooling for a touch diamond and then hearing my friend say its laggy after he bought it, was a real disappointment. Microsoft is really behind the curve in the mobile sector. Thinking about selling my tilt for iphone now. Might wait till winmo 7 to come out before purchasing another winmo phone. For the record i'm a pc guy and i think apple products/fans our generally pretentious and kinda douche-ie (not all though).
Not sure about the Touch Pro2. I rarely .. if ever use my keyboard. I am waiting on the HTC Topaz for ATT..... drool.
I'm probably gonna go for the TP2. 800x480 screen!
They only issue i see with the device is that they've removed the d-pad.
HTC looks like they've put every good feature into this device, from FM Radio to TV Out. It looks perfect, and although a faster processor or a DPAD wouldn't hurt. And a 6.5 upgrade sounds good as well. I am certainly getting this phone.
Dave
good thing i passed on the fuze too...The Touch pro 2 will definitely be up there on my next phone list...And this will probably be the real successor to the tytn ii...I think it also matches the specs we had a few months back on the then phantom "TILT 2" that never showed up...until now...
TP 2.... is it worth sniffing at?
Does anyone know if it'll have proper 3D and 2 D DirectX and Direct Draw drivers included? I'm not wanting a HTC customised menu so much as full native support of the built in hardware within the operating system and parts thereof such as Pocket Mediaplayer itself. I'd like to use video playback without having to slash the frame rates and/or resolution as I have to with my Kaiser (even under TCPMP).
I'm concerned to read that although it has GPS support, it doesn't appear to list what software is provided to use this in the UK/Europe. Does this mean that it could be the TP all over again with HTC refusing to acknowledge any GPS problems that may crop up? Without a tried and tested native GPS app bundled with the device, it won't be one for me.
I'm very tempted - but I think I'll have to wait until I actually can put my hands on one in a shop to decide. I fear I will find it too large and/or thick for my liking. The Tilt is thick, but small. The iphone is large to the point I feel mixed with regard to the size in the pocket/screen comfort balance, but at least is thin. The TP2 will be large AND thick. And it loses the DPAD indeed, and I use that a lot
only a few people think it would be a worthy upgrade?
What's that saying, once bitten....

If those who currently have Kaisers (or TPs for that matter) get a feeling of déjà vu with the 'finished' product and its shortcomings (video drivers, keyboard performance, GPS time to lock and any lag, important bits/features missed out etc) then yes, you are correct. HTC need to learn from its mistakes and provide a product that actually meets peoples needs fully and reliably if they want those who've already been stung by them to part with cash on a new HTC product. Many people here have already said they'll never buy another HTC product due to all the problems they've had so you get an idea of the extent of feeling about such things!
I'm planning to get the TP2
- Higher resolution big and wide screen
- Larger battery
- Faster processor
- More internal memory
- 5 row keyboard
- TV out
- USB OTG
- New TOUCH FLO 3D with larger soft menu screens
- WM 6.5 (when HTC will make it available)
I'll miss:
- D-pad
- Jog wheel
- Buttons!

Or, there are people like me who are really happy with the Kaiser, and for whom it would take something really good to warrant a change. As said, I'll see the TP2 when it's there, but until then I don't plan to change at all.
If the cookers start cooking good roms and it can be unlocked ok then yes it looks lovely

why did S/E avoid an Accelerometer in the X1??

Was that because the phone is fat?
I thing it's because they asked HTC to build the X1 for them. HTC made them believe it's better without g-sensor.

becuz no one will buy htc phone anymore if X1 has g-sensor!!
The only advantage of htc phone now is only g-sensor
I think with the motherboards used in the HTC's and X1, there are only a certain number of ports available for add-ons such as acceleromenter. We got an optical mouse instead of the accelerometer.
They got TV-Out, we got stereo headphone jack.
I'm just speculating though.
We could have Optical Mouse and G-sensor switchable if so.
i thing it's a pure marketing decision for HTC to play this way. SonEr are in no more contacts with HTC. X2 is developed with someone else help...
sometimes they do it because of some technical limitations but if you ask me most of the times they do it on purpose for dirty political reasons.
most probably to leave some room for "improvement" of future models. why would people buy fthe x2 for $700-$800 if the x1 has everything
htc did that with tp2. they put some artificial limitations on the touch pro2 to make room tp3 next year. why else would they release it with a slow 528mhz cpu or flashless 3.2 camera and no 3.5mm jack or more
apple are even worse than htc with their ultra low resolution hvga screen, flashless 2mp camera (1 year after nokia released 5 MPexel cameras with flash ) and the many software limitations that will probably be activated in next year model
bottomline...if manufaturers think they will be able to sell a lot of devices, it makes sense to them to give it to you with as little features and hardware defecancies as possible. it makes too much scene as far as their current and future profit margins is concerned
in x1 case though. i think SE didnt include the the accelerometer because it was (x1) announced in feb08 and at the time, there was no windows phone that had or even announced that it would have accelerometer capability. the touch diamond and Omnia were the first devices to have it and both were released much later than feb 08. seems to me that it was an honest mistake or by se part
Because they want to milk us for more cash. If the x1 is perfect you will not have a reason to buy the X2.
if those pics are realy then noone is going to buy the X2 anyway
btw, i dont miss the G-sensor. had one in my n95 and disabled it cause the auto screenrotation roratet teh srcreens when i didnt want to. it was more anoying the usefull.
i'd rather have a compass so navigation turns more realtime.
Another reason could be that, at the time, there just wasn't enough WM software available to take advantge of an accelerometer. So what would be the point of adding one?

Now what I am about to say...I think a lot of people on this forum will disagree on me....the removed it because it's a smart choice that accelerometer is an annoying feature and it takes hardware space.
I hate hate hate hate hate turning on the accelerometer so much! I'd rather have a button on the side of a phone to decide when to rotate the screen... all manufactures are too stupid to add a fast CPU and a switch button to prove to mankind that my idea is better than accelerometer.

This I agree!
I'd turn it off on the day one..
It is good for games, but not much else lol.
Well, I would agree with the last three posts. I've never had a phone with accelerometer, but, that's been my thinking all along...what exactly is it good for beside games? As slow as WM is, I would be scared that my phone would lock up or crash if I turned it too many times.
If they manage to put one in the next X phone and have some software that really uses it to it's fullest potential, then I'm all for it.
The Diamond and Omnia had it so that the screen can rotate when the phone is held in landscape.
The X1 has a keyboard & senses when it's opened, so doesn't need an accelerometer for anything that important.
Suggesting they left it out so that they can sell more X2s is quite funny - honestly, who's going to buy an X2 just because it has an accelerometer?
Similar to all those complaining the Pro2 doesn't have a snapdragon (which no currently available phones have) + better camera + flash + 3.5mm socket + all the form factor benefits of the pro2, all for the same price as an HD. And apparently it's all a con so we can buy the pro3 next year!

That's what I also thought, and it makes me so mad.....if only we could purchase customized phones the way we purchase customized computers/laptops or customize them ourselves, then we would totally get exactly what we want.

So if you were a marketing and economic advisor for your company, you'd tell the asking company that it would be a wiser choice to put everything in all at once? That's a waste. You have to understand that what you say is correct, but for an economic it is correct if in terms of services. Services typically strive to do better than other people who provide the same service, no matter what. Goods are a little bit different than service, in which as long as other companies set margins to what their device provide, then the company will also set margins as well. Now we aren't talking about eBay crap or haggling, so the end result is an expected increase in real profit.

X1, a long term investment??

Im really starting to consider the X1, but i want to know if the X2 (or whatever it will be called) has plenty of new parts in the interface will this be able to be ported to the X1, so that in a sense when the X2 comes out you could literally tailor make your X1 into the X2. As touch flo has been ported i would of guessed the X2 would be the same, with whatever new feats would be added??

TC,
Have you seen and felt the X1 in person and played with it for more than 15 minutes? The X1 looks much smaller in person, just be sure t oknow what you're getting yourself into. Also, there might be newer HTC devices coming with more powerful processors later this year. It might be worth waiting.
Just give it a thought. Whatever it is, just be sure to make sure you've seen the X1 in person before buying it.
Cheers.
I would say wait for an xperia like device with snapdragon cpu or tegra or cortexA8
oh and if you would take xperia. take also an insurance because this phone has alot of weird issues that appear after 2-6 months.. like cracks or a phone that goes off when sliding out.
Make the X1 into X2? It seems almost impossible, not with cellphones.

Whats Snapdragon and tegra and cortex, what does this do??
Wouldnt the warranty cover the cracks, for a phone this expensive i wouldnt expect any cracks.
I have an X1i with no cracks or physical issues. I purchased mine in November, shortly after it hit the market (I had to return my first one becasue the FM radio didn't work).
It will most likely be possible to upgrade X1 to WM6.5 when it comes out. Of course, you can upgrade it to the WM6.5 beta right now if you'd like, but of course it isn't 100% complete or bug-free yet. I don't think any phone is obsolence-proof though. Enjoy the X1 now, since who knows when the X2 will actually hit the market? They're both WM based phones, so the software will be compatible.
The price on unlocked an X1i continues to fall, with the cheapest I've seen lately at $449 US. That's also a consideration.

x1 to which phone?please advise:)

hi guys.i am x1 owner more than a year.i had good and bad experience with my x1.now this is the time to upgrade my phone.which phones you guys are recommeding?
3 things are essential for me.sliding keyboard(aka hardware keyboard) , fast cpu and large screen.what do you thing?which phone shoudl i get?thx in advance...
few i want recommend such as HD2 or X10 but they dont have sliding keyboard
I am pondering currently between the HD2 and much more simple HTC Snap.
HD2 is very expensive though...
And after what i've seen from Sony with the X1 - X2 is out of the question
I am thinking about buying X10 mini pro... Cheap enough and nice qwerty keyboard. and ANDROID!!!
get an lg expo 1ghz cpu nice screen and sliding keyboard.
I would also go for a LG Expo if I had to choose a phone now.
Overclocked milestone/droid
thx for all your comments and advice guys.you are very help full.lg expo looks very good.i review omniaII as well.looks not bad...is there any 1ghz one hand device guys?like htc snap?!htc snap screen looks small and cpu is same as x1...i must read and investigate more
I've made my decision....
X1 isnt that bad of a phone so i'm gonna stick with it until it breaks, for 18 a month i can get unlimited texts, unlimited data and 300 minutes for a sim only deal.
HD2 and Lg expo and that are just soo expensive! even with contract!
Its the same for me. I dont see a reason to replace my Xperia X1. It does everything I need just perfectly.
Samsung GT-B7610 OmniaPRO looks ok. But no D-pad

I'm with you on this one. Too bad it won't have Sense UI, though. I can hope they do something better than default Android OS.
Since I am in U.S. I feel deprived of options since HD2, Omnia series phones, and even the Nexus One are not usable on AT&T 3G.
I had Xperia X1 - it was a great device. The only problem I had was the poor reception.
If I was you, I'd buy one of the following:
- HTC HD2
- Sony Ericsson X10 (Nexus One is to ugly for my taste, sorry)
... or hold your breath for a while... Windows Phone 7 will arrive soon
Good luck!
I'm using my x1 from 3 month...i have 2 reasons to change it: the slide is going damnly ko (i will go soon to service center...), and is missing video acceleration for divx....!!
I think the better wm phone now is lg gw820 expo....but i live in Italy and it is not available in europe....!
Another nice one can be samsung b7610!
If you like android try to consider the cheap lg gw620.
I think i will repair my x1 slide and may be i will wait Christmas to upgrade it, because when will be availabe wm7 phones, wm6.5 phone will be cheaper!
Sorry for my bugged english...!!
