7.2.2 Root - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So just now I got the new 7.2.2 update. Lost root too. I will test qemuroot and see how it goes.

Let me know as well. I lost rot but market and Swype still work. I did not even notice this thing restart.

7.2.2 Lost Root
This morning I was attempting to get my wallpaper picker working and ES File explorer wouldn't let me copy into system/apps. qemuroot fails with copying /data/local.prop
I was just starting to like this hunk of crap.

lost root too after the update. have tried qemu tool but that did not work.
step 2 -exploiting
/system/bin/sh: cannot create. /data/local.prop: permission denied
rebooting
i also noticed that the /data folder is empty. is there any solution to re-rooting this device?
thanks for your help

I lost root also but I still have my launcher with widgets and play store loads up. Wasn't able to root with qemu tool. I can navigate outside the sdcard folder but have read only access. So far I haven't noticed any issues with existing programs after losing root.

On the other hand, the update did bring the swype keyboard and the new freetime thing. I hope this one can be rooted. It was a neat update since swype and other keyboards don't really work in landscape.

And I'm loving the new keyboard so far too. The thing I hate about the update though is that without root ADW Launcher is not recognized as a system application any more so it can't be bound to the home button and set as a default launcher. Also I can't add widgets on the desktop for some reason.
Otherwise the system is pretty much OK providing you have google play previously installed. But we really need the root back for all the newcomers that want market and customize the device.

Me too. Just got it usable (from Norway) and then the 7.2.2 came...

I did not get the update until now. Looks like renaming otacerts.zip really prevents the update?

7.2.2 Flu
Got hit myself. Neither Qemu or Bin4ry's Root w/restore were successful at restoring root. I'll just sulk with my stock Kindle until you frightfully clever fellows beat this one, too.

i root my kfhd last night and i was trying to install google play and boom!! autoupdate works and 7.2.2 came root lost :crying:

Got the update to 7.2.2 last night, didn't get swype KB, which would have been great as the stock KB is a dog, lost root as did everyone, ES still says i have root access but "I don't" desperately awaiting a tool to regain root, that said I've still got Play Store, and Go launcher is still my default launcher, so it's not the end of the world. what we really need is a cracked bootloader and custom roms to take control of what could have been a really nice tool.

Meh, I got this second kindle for my mom as a Christmas present, was planning on spending the day rooting and installing stuff
What are the chances that someone will come up with a work around before the 24th?
I need time to set everything up for her, debating on returning this to get a nexus7 or galaxy

Also trapped in closet. Hope 7.2.2 is rootable! Thanks ayaxxa for the tip with renaming otacerts.zip.

My root has gone!
I just rooted today an was installing google play store actually was pushing the apk to the kindle HD and when I noticed that it couldnt send it an was restarting !!!! after that i see the update logo!!!!! hate amazon ! Hope somebody can find the re root procedure guys!

Ouch just got this in the mail today and it has 7.2.2 already. Just my luck seems to be having wifi issues too... Well at least I won the darn thing

If Im sideloading apps does it pay to root device

Hi
Im just trying to find out what rooting the device will buy me...since I sideload apk files anyway...I know with rooting I can eventually get the Google play on the device...I'd like to hear from those that rooted it, what else it brought to the table. Because of all the bricked units and the bootloader being locked...Im a little nervous to do it..especially when I see one user successfully rooted it..only to have the screen come up blank a few days later..any input or feedback would be greatly appreciated....
If you follow all the directions right in rooting your device. Then you should not need to worry. If you have experience then you should be fine. Root gives you access to all system files. The reason people are getting brick is cause they mess with the system files. We do not fully know what all the files are for yet. So you just need to be careful. Root gives access to a completely different launcher keyboards. There are many topics on what you can do.

Just two things for example:
without root you can't use any other launcher except the amazon one
and can't use international keyboards.
Other things like backups, optimizing your device.. are not so critical

Not entirely true. Without root, you are limited to the number of launchers that will work. And with those that DO work, tapping the home soft button brings up the default Amazon UI. But you CAN use a launcher different than Amazon's.
I'm using ADW Launcher EX on a full stock unrooted KFHD. I like the flexibility of having access to both interfaces. I have decided that I won't root it until there is a foolproof way to prevent Amazon from forcing a subsequent update that would undo root.

is there a way to disable or freeze the component responsible for update downloading?
or to disable communication with update server?

I´m done with rooting
I root my KFHD as i get it out of the box; then get an ota update, lost root, root again, another ota, and another root and son on and on...
Since the google play market remains usable after lost the root privileges, i don't intend to root again; i live in mexico so i cant afford to brick my kindle fire.
The only apps screwed after lost the root where google maps and youtube; i got them in system/apps and disappear after the update, side loaded they dont log in, they need the google login service apk found in this forum, and after a reboot the login fine.
I dont care for backgrounds, widgets or alternate launchers; i just need to launch my games and apps on the superb screen of my KFHD and the amazon launcher does just that.
until someone breaks the bootloader...

[Q] Rooted my Kindle fire but it updated and now root seems to be undone

Hey Guys,
I recently rooted my Kindle Fire HD and installed Go Launcher onto it and everything was going perfectly. I then installed Google service and Google Play store which worked perfectly too but this seems to have triggered a Kindle Fire update which now seems to have removed Go Launcher from my kindle...although I can see that the apk file for it is still present. I was wondering if this means that my Kindle Fire has somehow un-rooted itself or if I just need to install Go Launcher again? I am a little baffled as to which way to proceed next, I could re-root but don't want to unless necessary since it is risky and I dont know the affect of re-rooted a machine.
Thanks,
Emmz
I did the same (rooting, play store, go launcher) and i didn't have an update and i still have root.
If i were you, i would first find out if the root-rights on your device really disappeared. For example you could use the ES File manager to find it out. Check if the root-settings in ES are set respectively can be set.
Did you install the go launcher correctly as described in the forum? Copy the apk to /system/apps, set the permissions and install it from there. Be careful!! Everything you do is at your own risk! Read the related thread before you start.
Good luck!

just reroot it would be my suggestion, update gets rid of root but ive read in some instances where people were still able to use their launchers too tho. i havent received an update yet but after i rooted mine, i renamed the otacerts.zip file to otacerts.zip.bak and i also checked that ota keeper box in superuser.
As others have said, OTA updates will unroot the device, and anything else you may have moved to the system folder will also be removed. This usually means launchers and the Vending.apk for Google Play too. It's safe to root again and reinstall your apk. This situation happened to me twice (OTA'd one day, and a few days later, another surprise OTA), and I've already rooted again and reinstalled my launcher.

[Q] KFHD still rooted... well some sort of

Hey,
i have a really strange problem. i rooted my KFHD some time ago. everything worked fine, superuser, google playstore, es-fileexplorer with system and so on. some days ago i wanted to install the app kindlefree (posted here in forums). but when i opened the app it said, it would need a rooted device. root checker from the play store also says "no root". superuser lists two apps with full permissions: es-fileexplorer and sixaxxis (use ps3 controller for android). both apps work fine and with the file explorer i can go up to the system files of the KFHD.
Maybe this problem has something to do with the amazon update. systeminformation says im on 7.2.3_user_2330720
so my quastion is what has to done, to fully root my device again? is it only some sort of bug or do i need to do the whole root-process + installing vending.apk etc. again?...i dont hope so because the rest of my device works really great but is was a long process
Does anyone else the same problem? thank you guys
If you were updated then you will have to re root all over again.
I recommend turning off the ota updates after you do it all again.

[Q] lost root today, no google play

Did I miss something? Was there an update in the last day or two that removes root access?
I noticed today that I couldn't access G Play Store, and couldn't delete hosts file because I couldn't mount r/w. Then supersu said there was no binary installed... hence no root
WTH man. Any advice? Do I need to re-root?? I use KFFirstAide, so I guess it wouldn't be that bad... still...
Thanks all
I heard that x.4.6 got released, root I think works, I'm not a amazon stock user as my signature says. Just go for it, it should work, if kffa doesn't try binaries root.

I know bin4ary's method works, because that is what I used.
Mine came with 7.4.6, and I am having difficulty determining what will work with it. If the update just went out, that makes sense.
Ok here's what worked:
Re-root using KFFirst Aide. Used the auto process, worked great (did not have to wipe device first).
Then followed KFFirstAide guide to installing Google Play manually. Works fine and I don't have to reinstall anything.
It appears that the latest update removes anything not stock in system/apps, which would explain why gplay stopped working (no logon services or framework)

[Q] Lock Screen ADS showing up again

Alright so out of nowhere today my Kindle fire 7 10.4.6 started displaying lock screen ads again. It's rooted and I've renamed the dtcp_apk.apk to dtcp_apk.bat. And it hasn't been showing ads since I rooted. But today it started again out of no where. Here's the complete background and what I've already tried.
Kindle has remained charged the entire day and has not died since purchase, I've confirmed I still have root access through Root Checker, I've renamed the dtcp file back to it's original .apk and restarted and then changed back to .bat and still ads show up. Confirmed that OTA updates are disabled, I'm at a loss here, anybody else having this problem or found a way of fixing it? Short of wiping the root and starting over from scratch.
And thank you in advance for any help or feedback!

Just received a KF2 (10.4.6) this week as a gift. Spent several days trying to remove the lock screen ads. Finally got it working. Hopefully this is not a repost - could not find it in the search.
Need to root device first. In addition to renaming the /system/app/dtcp_apk.apk file as referenced elsewhere on this forum, it looks like Amazon has put the same app in a different location. I also renamed /data/app/com.amazon.kindle.kso-1.apk, rebooted the device, and now no more lock screen ads.
