So I'm getting this phone today. Like most phones...after they "honeymoon" stage, ROM threads kind of die down. I like things simple...I'm coming from a Droid 2G, Droid 3, to the 4. (Which, by my luck, means the announcement of 5 will be any day now.) I'm looking for a ROM that's simple...and strong on battery. I'm not an average user, so I'm pretty sure I can get by...but I'm curious for ROM choices. I prefer a debloated stock rom as its usually the simplestest. But in true nerd fashion...I gotta ask..what's your preferred ROM?

eclipse. I've tried droidHD, aokp, cm10 and cna and frankly, I can hardly tell the difference (except for the screen rotation bug in jelly bean). eclipse is fast and easy on the battery; I'd go with it.
note, however, that with safestrap 3.x you can experiment with different ROMs all you like...
I agree, plus there are no bugs on Eclipse though I love the customization options of the JB roms.

Thanks guys. I thought I read somewhere that there was a screen rotation issue with Eclipse. Is this true?
Definitely the Eclipse hybrid. I left my phone stock for 2 months and I didn't like the battery drain and just decided to root and install safestrap (very easy) and I tried a few ROMs but came back to the eclipse hybrid. It's debloated and i also have it slightly overclocked to 1320 but with low voltage. Excellent battery life and very snappy! you won't be disappointed.

I use nova launcher but while I was using eclipse' launcher I didn't experience any problems
The rotation issue is with the JB-based roms (AOKP, CM, CNA0.
I've seen a lot of people recommending eclipse but this is the first time I've seen "hybrid" attached to the name. What is meant by "hybrid" in this case? Is there an eclipse rom and a hybrid eclipse rom, or is it just differing terminology for the same thing?

Agreed. I've noticed this too, specifically on droidforums.net and was wondering the same thing. That brings me to my next question...does anyone have a link for the Eclipse ROM that is so popular? I'm seeing mostly JB links around..and I'm perfectly happy with getting ICS. (I'm on GB right now)
Regular Eclipse is stripped to the bare bones, the hybrid version has some Verizon stuff still in it because some people still wanted to make use of some of the Verizon apps.
As for the link to Eclipse, there's a thread a few spots down with Eclipse.
EDIT: here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815079
I always keep the latest version of Eclipse on one of my ROM slots because it's always reliable and never lets me down. I use CM10 a lot on another slot because I like messing around with some of what JB has to offer but I always need to swap into Eclipse when I have an issue on CM10.
Best ROM thread.

Ive been running MONSTERrom 1.1 since it came out. Looks very nice and runs very fast. 1.1i is the latest and greatest at the moment, but he releases new versions all the time (which is absolutely ok with me)

+1 This is exactly my view as well.
ditto ditto. really like this rom. best part is not only how well the dark theme is done, but the fact that you don't feel like your running a rom. it is solid, fast and stable.
Agreeing with everyone else on Monster Rom. Awesome rom to fulfill my needs until we get some CM7 and MIUI.
Monster Rom 1.1i i would never run that junk...
but Monster Rom 1.1j on the other hand works for me.
lol i thought it would be longer before we saw one of these threads.
Best rom, for now, is the XT883 one.
Not all themes seem to be compatible with it. So, I'd have to disagree if it limits customizing.

Who cares about themes, first we need a functional rom, then we can start to thing to customization.
And the XT883 rom is way more functional, although affected by the lack of a functional bootstrap loader.
Considering most people seem to be adding themes? Plenty of people care about themes. Not to mention I haven't seen any problems with SD or MR yet. I will say your ROM is very good if you're looking to keep the Rom stock, and it is very sleek. Plus I seem to have more Ram available on MR versus the other two.
But most people that flash Rom's, also want it to be customizable.. that's why ROMs like Cyanogen and MIUI are so popular, even though they're not always completely stable.
I say it comes down to personal preference in this case.
Ok, so there is only two custom rom availabe atm for Droid 3?
Monster Rom v1.1j
Details changes is here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-3-roms/176253-monster-rom-v1-1-a.html
This Custom Rom is more on theme added FM Radio function etc.
Another Custom Rom is XT883. Can't find any info on this rom. Don't now the changes. Any link?

Looks good. What is the latest Android Base of Custom Rom for Droid 3? Is it only based on 2.3.5. Is there any higher to 2.3.7?
Steel Droid is a great choice if you like Blur. It was just as fast as Monster and equally debloated.
The only reason I did not stick with Steel was the font. It was driving my eyes crazy. I have since jumped to Monster and so far I am very happy.

+1 the rom is really functional with no default, no bug.....
Themes are a big deal, they give the visual illusion of an upgrade and on a fast rom it just feels good.
Voting for Monster but will probably move to narcotICS.

Let's say Ice Cream Sandwich out, do you think D3 will have USB Host capabilities? I think I read it somewhere that Motorola Droid had USB OTG hardware inside.
Been on pinnacle for a while now. Its been the most stable/battery efficient rom i have used so far. This will be my go to rom for the time being.
The problem is im kinda bored, and i wanna try something else out.
I want to give cyanogen/miui a shot again, but the battery life i had with both was just awful. I guess it has to do with a proprietary driver?
I also have used apex with bad results in the past. I guess the problem there was that it wasnt an actual captivate rom.
I know this limits my options, but what else is out that i can try? Battery life is one of my main concerns, and im pretty sure i wanna stick with a captivate-based rom.
To answer your question, I would give Serendipity 7 a shot. It's pretty fast and very stable. I've had very good success with that rom. However, when was the last time u tried CM. I've been using the CM Nightlies and i've had decent battery life on it. It's not as good as some of the stock based roms, but it's not far off. Even the CM 7.1 stable release for the Captivate didn't have horrible battery. Although the nightlies are definitely battery on battery life and performance
to answer yours or anyones question, go to the dev section, read what each rom has and pick one you like.

I'm looking but I can't seem to find any working big name roms like Cyanogenmod, AOKP, Paranoid Andoid, or Slimbean ROMs for the AT&T s5.
Am I missing them or are they truly unavailable?
Have you been in a cave...LOL...Just Kidding. Welcome to the new At&t Samsung way. LOCKED BOOTLOADER
FOREVER.
Unless we some how get a Loki workaround, we will never have custom kernels.
Big Name ROM? Lets give credit to the devs we do have - giving their time for our device and only TouchWiz.
Damn...I just found out about towelroot and I was so excited about finally being able to wipe my phone clean with a cool big new rom. No offence to the little devs, but it's just not the same, ya know?

I'm thankful for the devs who are giving their time, but I look for roms with the features I want and need, not by who the developer is. Let's help these guys become "big devs" by supporting their work.
My point is, all of the ROMs available look and function pretty much exactly like stock except they have bugs. Big name ROMs have tons of features and few bugs as well as completely changing up the stock experience. It's a shame, but I'm just going to go back to stock because all of the ROMs out now are (to me) no different than stock and filled with bugs.

Not true, Vision is stock all the way, I just changed the stock look a little, everything works PERFECT. I agree, you start modding the phone with a bunch of non-needed mods that btw, xposed can handle, it tends to have issues. This exactly why I built Vision, for this purpose.
Give it a try. You will not be disappointed.:good:

I don't understand how one can say CM or any AOSP or AOKP Rom are bug free if that was the case then why nightlies? I've flashed MANY AOSP Roms on my S2 S3 and S 4 and never found one "bug free". Now development is just beginning for the AT&T S5 and whether there's a loki exploit or something like it remains to be seen, however, there will be and already are themers and modders working to give us choices.
I prefer T/W for the stability and and really "bug free" experience. Hence no need for nightlies.

I'm curious, what exactly is a "Big Name" ROM? I have been Devin for a long time AOSP, AOKP, CM, SENSE, and currently TouchWiz (which by the way is actually very stable model or not). There isn't even a stock oob firmware without bugs if there was there would be no updates or patches from oem.
I appreciate your wanting a highly themed ROM however, during early stages most devs look to take care of opening things up and enabling what was removed or disabled. Personally I leave the heavy modding and style changes to the themers.

Hi,
My Droid mates, are you still using Droid 3? It has been collecting dust in my drawers for some time. Today I am going to give it a new life. Any development on the best ROMs? It seems to me that Cyanogemod has stayed cm-10.1-20140216-NIGHTLY-solana.zip for awhile. So what keeps you use this QWERTY?
i am using it.. no new development..
I am keeping mine as an emergency backup device in case my phone (Droid Maxx) spits the bit, but I'm a few months away from an upgrade (sometime this fall, most likely), and I'll likely retire the D3 for good. I still fire it up once a week or so to make sure all is copacetic in case I need it.
Man, is it slow and laggy though!
cm11
there is a cm11 for this phone, works rather well. but i find that if you have to many things installed. aka gapps.. its going to lag. so i used my tablet to send the device apks. like messenger, and it runs well now.
Could you provide a link? Thanks.

Sent from my XT861.
still using it, i'm with 2.3.4 version of xt860 kinda crappy now but i'm lookin a way to turn it into a 4.1
Unfortunately, despite many custom 4.x ROMs are available, I found none of them as fast and stable as 2.3.4 based ones.
wow this is totally depressing then. its terrible to dont be able to not use all apks out there cuz they would never work on 2.3.4, but whats bad about others roms that you hated?
All (almost all) are luggish, slow, and unstable. Camera doesn't work, in some ROMs there are problems with wifi, in some data connections break down. I had a lot more custom ROMs for my previous Milestone 2.
a real good one was my milestone 1 really nice, android 2.2 but ram memory sucked hard and internal memory also.
---------- Post added at 11:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:19 PM ----------
hey did anyone test this rom cm11? cuz it didnt work on my xt860 ;/ and what gapps did u use?
I tested, but as I stated before, it is luggish and unstable. A lot worse than CM11 on Millestone 2.
Im still with xt860 because of its qwerty keyboard, and no newer phones with phisical keyb are avaiable here in brazil. I kinda regret selling the droid 2 to upgrade for the 3, I could never use a newer version than 2.3.6, too bad, its a nice hardware btw.
Just wanted to know that, becouse i will have to update the s.o version to install it (i have 4.1) but i dont know if it will work anyways.
Thanks.
Ive got CM 12.1 and my phone freezes when i try to start pokemon go. If you wait for it to load for like 30 minutes, you can hear the game music, but thats as far as i got.
I would also like to hear other people's experiences with pokemon go on the droid 4.
Ive got CM 13 and "pokemon go" work, but game very often freezes when I caught Pokémon 1/3.
and Gyroscope not work.

I'm not sure at the moment. Uninstalled Go after their cracking down on Xposed users and general falling out of style locally where I am.
If he wants to play Go on a D4 you'll have to do a lot of optimization because took some patient. I remember something with 2D textures and another with 3D decreasing to .5x or something. It's pretty easy to learn, just install and test out the main settings on the top mixing and matching on what helps the most.
Don't run stock for him. I'm current running KK (CM11) fine and Go worked decent with good optimizations. Might for him test out some of those overclocked kernels on here (low voltage ones too).
You're on the latest stock. There is a Nougat custom rom out (CM14?). Haven't tested too much, could be something good to look into.
For Go I would probably go with another device than a D4 sadly. Depends on who your brother is but he may not be very patient and wanting better speeds than what the D4 can offer with Go. May expect more from the D4 than it can offer. You're the judge, just a thought. You know him and your own ability.

He's got my old D3 at the moment. He likes it well enough. He wants an Iphone 5S and is into a lot of older things. He's a classic car buff. I figure the D4 will be an improvement on the D3 he currently has. He and Mom went to the Verizon store today to look into upgrading his 'dumb' phone to one of the latest and 'greatest'? phones and left with his old 'dumb' flip phone. That poor D3 is so old that store doesn't even have SIM cards to fit it anymore, so he can't use that for his regular phone. Again, I figure the D4 will rock for him, I have a SIM card for it and he has memory cards.
As far as fiddling with roms goes, I have enough experience to root 4.1.2 (Jellybean) and rock with Mike Reid's Spirit1 app. I haven't ever overclocked or fiddled with settings like that, since I prefer the stock roms usually. I wonder if I can find a stock KitKat (4.4) to flash and instructions on how to do that. The Pokemon Go app says it supports 4.4 up to 6.0, so I guess nougat is out of the picture since it's 7.0?
If I were to consider using the CM11 rom could you point me in the right direction to find instructions on how to flash the rom to the D4?
Do you know if CM11 is rooted? That might make life easier for me cuz I have a new to me D4 that needs to be rooted to run my favorite app and I haven't done it yet cuz it's a bit complicated for me.

First install SafeStrap (3.75) and reboot to recovery, then you're home. Wipe the stock, flash a different rom. Look for the updated CM11 on here, (updated 2016).
