Is there a way to increase the quality of the audio when u rec 720p video?
Would be great if it uses both microphones to achieve higher quality, stereo sound.
not possible as of yet
Why is that? There are apps on the market that can do this.

XDA-Devs are probably worried about more important things right now...
Would be nice though.

I posted a thread about this at the Cyanogen forums a little while ago:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/1584-video-camera-audio-quality-examples/
The culprit is the AMR codec and abysmal bitrate. I'm not an expert, but from what I have been able to piece together, the ability of the phone to record video and audio is somehow limited by the radio and the formats and containers it can handle. For whatever reason, it is presently non-trivial to get it to write (say) h264 video with AAC audio. But I do think there's demand for this so hopefully we'll see it at some point.
I'm thinking this belongs in the Q&A section...
What codec is used on htc devices for recording videos? its awful, check it out

I have read in a few places that this is actually a problem with android rather than necessarily manufacturers...
The default sampling quality used by MediaRecorder is very very low..
This site recommends a tool called "Rehearsal Assistant"

the audio on the xperia arc, and samsung galaxy s and galaxy s II seem years ahead of htc devices, i dont think its androids fault

In that link you posted they say the default sampling is 4.75kbps, 8kHz! the iphone's is 48Hz , i remember the omnia hd had this issue and samsung FIXED it, where is htc?
For some reason, HTC always record using the AMR codec. they've been doing this for years, even on the old windows mobile devices, and they've always sounded crap.

time to start a petition? it worked for the samsung omnia hd , and here in xda we have MANY ,MANY htc users
It's not just the recording sound either - HTC are also way behind in speaker quality output. I'm not expecting hi-fi but something usable rather than that tinny crap they do put out woud be nice!
I have a pretty limited knowledge on this but from what I have read if both uses the Snapdragon 600, then the sound quality (with headphones) would be the same? Or would there be any differences which makes one better than the other?
Soundchip... whatever...
HTC One = AMP + Stereo Speakers !
I think the word ur looking for is DAC [Digital to analogue converter]..Samsung uses WOLFSON [one of the best]..Dont know about HTC but it must be great from what i am seeing.
LOL I have a one x and the sound with an audio mod that allows 96khz resampling is the best audio that i have heard yet. It beats my friends galaxy s3

I dont own a sg3 so I dont know if they have the wolfson DAC, if not that would be the main reason why. What audio mod are you using, acid or beats audio or something else? My personal opinion along with my buddies when comparing my note 2 against their phones is that the note 2 blows away the competition as long as I have voodoo sound support. Nothing can compare to that audio mod, I will personally slap anyone that things the beats audio mod or the beats audio headphones are actually good

NA S4 vs One: The HTC One wins. They have the same DAC, but htc has an external Amp.
Int. S4 vs One: S4 probally wins, but no1 has tested yet. If it has a Wolfson DAC, S4 wins, but by a small margin I would assume.

Generally, Wolfson > Qualcomm > Tegra. HTC One has qualcomm but I am interested to see what they have done with their "beats" stuff hardware wise
Beats is a stupid software mod which increases the trebble and bass..there are no real sound improvements in it. Marketing gimmick.

HTC have made an effort to provide good sound hardware (eg the speakers) so I wouldn't be surprised if we see some improvement over the One X. A dev who went to the launch event in the US told me that the sound through headphones was very impressive compared to his DNA

Normally I would agree with you 100% but in this case I think you are wrong. Beats sucks, but the audio for the One has been completely redesigned in-house and the drivers are made by HTC specifically for the in-house chip and made to interface with Beats.
But don't take my word for it; if any one is farmiliar with Myriam Joire (a.k.a tnkgrl) of Engadget you know she's a programmer and has a background in Audio, she knows here stuff better than 99% of the people here. On the latest mobile podcast (linked below, around 35 mins in) she talks about how its the by far the best audio you will get on any mobile device, period. She mentioned it was a league ahead of the iPhone/iPod, but no other devices were even mentioned. I'm not an audio file, but when I hear one make very bold statements like that, its quite impressive.
I would say the One wins by a long shot.

We know that one of the goodie from Z2 is that it has a special audio technology that are captable to reduce noise in some way
but is it hardware or software stuff?? i see mods that port Z2 audio stuff to other devices, does the noise reduction part really works??
or it is software but contain some bulls*** like X-reality and photo quality enhancement that make it impossible to port to other devices??
any idea guys??
(i'm not requesting for a mod or something, just interested to know what it is)

If you're talking about the Digital Noice Cancelling it's implemented to the Z2 and need specific headset.
Each earphone in the Sony MDR-NC31EM headset has outward-facing microphone. The two mikes pick up background noise and send it for processing to the Xperia Z2.
Following this, a signal processor inverts the noise's phase by creating an anti-noise wave. This gets mixed with the audio that is being played on the phone.

I don't think so, this technology is not included in the Xperia Z1 so that wont work even with proper headset.
I think that it needs to be confirmed. I'll try getting my hands on the Z2 headset and putting mixer_paths from the Z2. That might work if it's not buried deeper in the Z2 software.
I don't think that I'll get my hands on the Z2 headset before it gets released though.

Oh this thread is gettng old lol
thanks you guys for answering XD
I'm thinking that the only possible hardware problem on Z1 is the audio jack?
maybe the audio jack on z2 contains an audio-in part for background noise so it can process for the noise??
are the audio jack for z1 and z2 really different in terms of hardware??
if it's same... i think it's logically port-able to z1 maybe?? (probably need some work on kernel... oh well)
just saying XD

I may say something stupid but you said that a SIGNAL PROCESSOR inverts the noise's phrase. My question is why we cannot "emulate" this processor at our main processor?

If the signal processor is a chip it wont be pretty possible to be port for standard cpu, (or Sony wont need that chip)
I'm not saying it's impossible, this is XDA and genius here are good at porting
just hope it's software (run by the standard processor) stuff so it may be easier
Guys, a signal processor via software would be slower and cpu intense... =(

You should care, because it would drain lot of battery power, and phone would heat up easily.

I believe our cpu can handle the extra stuff within 1Ghz
If there's sound processing chip, it will heat up and drain battery anyway (logically
Sound processing chip is specialized for that kind of work, as our snapdragon 800 are not.
If z2 use some kind of sound processor it has speed around few mhz, but they have almost zero latency and lag.
It's hard to explain for me on English, but I study that right now on my college.
It can be done, but chanse that will work good is close to nothing if it is hardware based feature.

This is making sense
so can someone tell if Z2 really got a special chip
or just the regular s801?

Only Sony know does Z1 have separate sound chipset or not. But I think it use Qualcomm's sound chipset and 801 does not have much difference from 800 (only OC some things) so I think/hope Digital Noise Cancellation will be ported to Z1.

Ya i know Z1 dont have the chipset but i'm not sure if Z2 do
if Z2 doesnt have any chip either, we have a good news
still, there might be problem with the audio jack /_\
I was reading around Internet but didn't find answer.
Only thing that I found is that headphones have 2 mics which record audio from surrounding and send to Xperia Z2 for digital sound processing (didnt claim hardware or software), and then xperia z2 do the job of noise cancelation.
Also, that will not work on any other phone so far as Sony says.

haha ofcoz sony dont want us to know more about it XD
well just googled some stuff
Xperia Z2 and the noise cancellation headphone has 5 pole audio jack and our Z1 seems to got 4 /_\ (or maybe 5?? i'm not sure)
Maybe the the extra pole do the job??
I really hope someone who love doing drop test and break the phone just to show how rich he is will try to open the case of a Z2 and show us what's inside actually

yeah, basically any high quality wired headphones that can be driven by a smartphone will work. and if you decide to use a portable amp, then any headphones will work.

I have never tried those so I don't know. There are a lot of good portable headphones, just check out headfi.org under the portable headphones section. I personally use Sennheiser MM-500X. It's bluetooth (with aptx) and wired for my phones. Sony's current MDR lines are pretty good too. Just a little too much bass emphasis for me, but it's just personal taste. It's hard to recommend headphones tbh.
