Swype beta - Nexus 7 General

For the first time, tonight I was finally able to install this great keyboard on the N7.

Good story.... Swype is a great keyboard, but not sure if this warrants a new thread.

I use swype on my phone. However I've not bothered with it on the N7. The standard keyboard does swype style movements and seems to be better for standard typing when I fancy it.

Swype 1.3 is the best and could never be replaced. The only thing that sucks is it uses its own voice recognition so you can't use Google voice offline recognition.

same here, it works fine.
but it sucks compared to Android GB Keyboard
i used to believe Swype was great until i started using AGB keyboard, now i can't live without it.
it's simply that good
AGB keyboard = stock keyboard on 2.3.3 / 2.3.4
i actually find swype to be cumbersome and slow now

Granted I'm a first time Android user, but I couldn't get used to the keyboard on my NS4G. I'm also coming from a Pre with a physical keyboard that I could type one handed without looking.
I admit the Swype keyboard looks like garbage compared to the new keyboard, but in terms of usability, I can punch out a text using Swype waayyy faster than on the new keyboard.
okay, yes, if you want to type one handed in the mist of a rush hour in a public transit, then Swype is a better choice
but for multi-touch fast 2 hands typing, the stock android keyboard is magnificent specially when it comes to language switching
it gives you instantaneous language swap, so in the same message you can mix and match languages without the looooooong steps required on swype.
Confirming also that swype is working fine on NS4G. I had to log into the swype beta website, 'remove' the old device they had listed for my account, re download the inataller, let it do its thing, e.g. install, license...
Off topic, do guys get key lag with AGB Keyboard? ..and did u install from market, or literally just the stock?
pileosnafu said:
I went there today, and saw that the Beta is still open. Just sign up to get the keyboard.
Also after 30 minutes of using the stock keyboard, and then 30 minutes of using the sywpe I went back to stock. The predection function is good. Almost as good as the real thing i had on the epic

do u keep vibrate on? Does that make the keyboard lag and/or miss keys (for you)?

Use keyboard manager from the market to use Swype in portrait and then switch to whatever other keyboard you want in landscape.

Is there any way to get the non-beta pre-loaded version that was on the Epic?? I really really miss the ability to double tap a misspelled word and bring up a list of other words....

SwiftKey x beta = best kbd for the Zio

A pretty gutsy claim, yes.
But I've been typing with this kbd for 2 days now, and I gotta say that with the general impreciseness of our screens, this keyboard allows me to type 50% faster than any other kbd on the market.
It has predictive text, but also searches for words that go with the prior word typed.
It also has the ability to learn from your typing style by analyzing your sms, text, gmail and facebook messages.
I highly recommend this keyboard for ALL zio owners.
You can download it @:

Very nice but at 17mb it eats up alot of ram. I'll give it a try for a while longer and see how well it really works.
Sent from my Zio using XDA Premium App
Its a beta release, so there are going to be bugs Im sure. Works 100% for me, and Im tellin ya, its far superior to all kbds I've tried. Even ultra kbd 0.o
Yeah, it does take up a little more RAM, but for the functionality, and the responseness of the program, I dont mind. Also being as it is a beta release, there might be some more code trimming to be done that will reduce the amount of ram.
But, If you think about it, its one of the most important apps for your phone; your keyboard. With that said, I wouldnt mind if it took up 20-25Mb, as long as it performs just as it does now. With my ROM installed, Im still at 55Mb-60Mb free RAM with it installed (and thats NOT stock -- on an established system).
I got the Language pack Error as well. Go into Settings/Language Profile/Language and download the English or whatever language you use.
I have purchased swift key and have been using it for over a year now. I rarely need to use more than two or three key strokes per word. The way it predicts the next word is simply amazing. Hands down the best keyboard replacement out there. Those of you who are using the beta version and having trouble with it should try the 30 day trial of swift key without the X available on the market.
Sent from my Zio using XDA Premium App
Download the English language pack by opening SwiftKey X from your app drawer.
Sent from my Zio using XDA Premium App
Got it working, damn this thing is magic fn magic

Funny thing is I bought the program a year ago but hardly used it, way quicker than smart keyboard.

Nice to see you guys comin' around to SwiftKey. i've been using it for quite a while and got in on the VIP/beta program for 2/X. It's gotten better and better over the last several months.
Option to apply skins is planned, too, FYI.
After using this keyboard for about two weeks, all I can say is SIMPLY AMAZING. The way it predicts words is phenomenal I rarely even have to type anything as it pieces together sentences for me almost flawlessly. I highly recommend this to anyone frustrated by the lame stock keyboards from android, or I would put it against any of the slide, swype style keyboards any day.
SwiftKey was super slow on my Zio. I'm not sure why everybody has such luck with it. Smart Keyboard Pro is way faster and uses up less memory. The text prediction really does suck though
Check out ThickButtons. Free. Best for zio IMO
Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and say swiftkey speech to text for the win I'm using it right now

Best Keyboard for ics?

Been using swiftkey for over a year and I love it but its laggy in ics. This isn't just a vivid thing either a Google search revealed nexus owners are having lag with it too. It ran fine on my captivate and fine on the vivid before the ics update. Tried several popular android keyboards and most have lag. Any suggestions?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA
I use swiftkey once in a while, the paid ver doesn't seem to lag for me, but I just don't like the small letters/fonts on the keys, especially on our qhd screens are even smallaer, there's no opinion to increase them from settings. I now, use the Thumb keyboard, very flexible and many themes.

I have thumb courtesy of foatd from Amazon. Tried it, still kinda slow for my tastes. Found a port of the its keyboard on the market and its very fast. Bought the paid version of it and its noticeably slower so I refunded and went back to the free one

In ICS, pressing and holding the input area is not how you change keyboards. That is done using a notification setting that appears wherever you enter a text input field.

I tried thumb keyboard for a whole day eventually just switched back to the ics keyboard I found in the market. Simply just too slow for my tastes. I have to say there has to be something different about the ics framework because all keyboards that were fast with gingerbread are slow on ics. I think right now the problem with ics is just not enough phones have it for developers to care

I stumbled across this looking for a keyboard with arrow keys. so far hacker's keyboard (for free in google play) is working good for me. quick, a bit smaller keys but it has arrows, control alt etc. supposed to work well with connectbot for ppl used to ssh etc.

You can change your keyboard size in settings.
The stock HTC one is very nice and fast but they left out one thing: auto space after prediction selection! Only android keyboard I've ever seen that doesnt auto space

which keyboard to go with

I'm looking to spend my $25 credit and I'm thinking keyboard.
Opinions on keyboards for the nexus 7?
You'll get so many different answers, try the free versions.
Swiftkey 3 for me though since you ask.
It told me earlier it'd saved me 10,000 keystrokes on my mobile and over 5,000 on nexus already.
Try thumb keyboard. Its great in landscape mode, and you can customize the keyboard as well!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I also suggest SwiftKey 3. One of the advantages for me is that it offers word suggestions and auto-correct in up to 3 languages at the same time. It also has the option for arrow keys at the bottom in the phone version.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I'll cosign Swiftkey. In landscape mode it's almost perfect, and works well enough that I feel natural using it. I still finding it surprising that I lke it so much considering my phone has a physical keyboard and I formerly used Swype as the alternative.

I use perfect keyboard. I love its split keyboard for for when I'm typing in landscape.
I second hackers keyboard for if you want something with the same layout as a real keyboard.

I've used Ultra Keyboard for over a year on my Nook Color and now on the Nexus. It has arrow keys, which I find invaluable.

Not that it helps with your credit, but I recommend Swype. I'm a little biased since I used to work for them, but I think it is the best keyboard input for touch bar none. You can get on the beta by visiting beta.Swype.com... this message was composed using Swype.

Swype beta is free and oh so buttery
Torn between swype and swift key on the nexus 7 myself. I use swype on my galaxy tab 10.1 and love it there but it can't touch the predictive accuracy of swift key. On my HTC One X I use swift key which I'd like to use on my nexus 7 but its buggy in Chrome for some reason. For now I'm sticking to the stock keyboard until I find something else or swift key update resolves the bugs.

I'm a devoted Swype user. Sometimes it acts strangely on webpages though. If that happens I switch to stock until in off that page
CDMA RAZR - .211 - KOA AOKP
I use Thumb Keyboard, I got it when it was the amazon free app of the day, and I really enjoy it. Although it seems to have some issues with Chrome that I'm having trouble figuring out.

Note 2 keyboard on One

Is it possible to put the galaxy note 2 keyboard on the One? Does it need to be rooted?
I really like the 5 row setup. I tried hackers keyboard as an alternative but didn't like it. Too many extra keys.
The note 2 keyboard was amazing.

Have you tried using Kii Keyboard? It has an option for the number row and when it shows up too (portrait only, landscape only, both). Only thing though is that it's a paid feature, although they let you try it out for an hour.
I'll give it a try. I've not used that before.

The Kii keyboard seemed to do the trick... But I'd still love to get the note 2 keyboard for free instead of spending the money. Is that part of the Samsung os?
Can it work on sense?

I don't think it would be as simple as installing an app if that's what you are thinking. Keep in mind the Note 2 keyboard has the handwriting input option and other Note 2 specific features. I, too, would love to have the keyboard. I think someone more experienced with this stuff than you and I could figure it out but if I were you, I'd just look for the best alternative.
