New Owner + Minisuit Keyboard - Nexus 7 General

Hello, all.
New Nexus 7 owner here. A few days ago my wife discovered that she could check out Korean language e-books from Korean libraries with an Android app, and suddenly she was giving me these sad, sad looks every time I left the house with my HTC Flyer.
Now it's her HTC Flyer
At any rate, I've been playing around with my new toy and let me tell you, it's PHENOMENAL! I love this thing. Smooth as glass (puts my ASUS TF300 to shame) and just brilliant in every way.
Now, I'm one of those rare guys who actually does real work with his tablets (not as rare as everybody says, I suspect) and so a bluetooth keyboard has always been a must-have accessory for me. Up 'till now I've been using an iGo Stowaway keyboard that I bought on eBay, and it's still the best portable keyboard out there, bar none.
But, the other day I was scouting out accessories on Amazon and ran across this odd little number:
Minisuit Keyboard
It looks just like those combination keyboard/case devices that clamp on to iPads. Wasn't too expensive, so I decided to give it a try. Gotta say I'm mightily impressed. No you won't be writing a novel on the teeny, tiny keys, but if your hands are reasonably small and you prefer to write on a physical keyboard then this is a really nice accessory to have. It clamps on to the Nexus 7 when not in use and has a rubberized, perforated texture just like the underside of the Nexus. At that point you're basically carrying around the world's smallest notebook computer. Only problem I've noticed with mine is that the magnet turns my Nexus 7 off if I place the tablet in the keyboard with the volume and power buttons facing up. So I have to place it in with the buttons facing down. This means, of course that if I want to adjust the volume I have to pull the tablet out of the cradle momentarily. But it's no big deal really, after all this is a bluetooth keyboard. You don't lose the connection or anything. One unfortunate omission: no tab key.
I'm a System Administrator and have to be available to work on emergency issues at a moment's notice. With the Nexus 7, this keyboard, a bluetooth mouse, our Citrix infrastructure and a wireless hotspot, I can be available and ready to work at a moment's notice just about anywhere. VERY COOL!
Just one more thing: looking through Amazon and eBay it appears that lots of companies are selling these units under various brand names. I'm sure they're all made in the same factory in China. You can buy them on Amazon for about $30.00, or if you're willing to wait a little longer for delivery, looks like you can get them on eBay (shipped from Hong Kong) for about $20.00

I have to admit I love the idea...the challenge is this keyboard is so Damn small. I bought one ad's love that it is a case and a stand. But on a "normal" keyboard I type 80+wpm corrected...I find myself hunting and pecking to be accurate.
Ihave connected to my HTC Amaze (Ruby) ... But find I am still faster with swype on both devices than with this keyboard. Great idea, just need to be a bit bigger for me.
I have given it to my 7yr old daughter for her N7. And I am sure I will use it on occasion.

Any SGT jumped shipped and bought the HTC Flyer yet?

I will visit the Best Buy store later this week and will try out the Flyer.
I have the 3G Galaxy Tab for T-mobile USA and I don't know if I should replace it with the Flyer or not.
My main concerns are the video playback and and the battery life. I am not sure if I will be using the pen that much.
nope. will not jump ship cause the flyer is not a real upgrade.
NO HC yet and only has a single core(though @ 1.5ghz).

That and it costs $500 WITHOUT the pen.
The fact that it's wifi only for $500 and the wifi Tab is $350 is making me say no. I love HTC products and if the price was comparable, I'd gladly pick it over the Tab. I like the size. I like the specs. I like Sense. I like the manufacturer. I do not like the price.
Almost...but they didnt have the pen! They couldnt even find the Tabs till i told them they need to look harder. Glad i didnt buy it, just would of been my soft spot for gadgets. STG is a great tab, but yes HTC is even better and will have alot of dev support as all HTC devices normally do. I have a sprint STG and i get lonely not able to flash anything with out beaking something else....Whats a phone, tab, computer..with limited support. So i may get it once it goes down to $400. With Best Buy discount its already $470 "employee looked it up while in store"...SO there is a large markup. We will see.
No way. The SGT is better for my daily routine. Besides I would be giving up the cell phone capability.

If I didn't have a tab (got a new one 2 days ago, 3g for 200 bucks, yay!), I'd still look at it.
It does look great, both in looks and internals.
But WITH a device already? I think I'd wait for another cycle before getting a new device. It's not /that/ different. (now, an Asus Transformer with dock? yummy).
I like the unibody and it looks well build, but it is heavier than the tab so that is a nono
the pen is a huge plus to me, ill love to see how well implemented is with the applications, the demos I have seen on the web show that you can write while your palm is resting on the screen with no problemshttp://media.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon14.gif
Also it is pressure sensitive, but according to what I've seen on the web does not seem to make much of a difference....... aaand the writing is not that good, you have to make big letters (perhaps similar to what used to be with old WM devices?)
So the pen is a big improvement compared to those crapacitive styluses but it still not where id like to be in quality yet,.. but it is a step in the right direction and hopefully will allow developers to create interesting applications
Also I don't hold any hopes in video and camera performance compared with our Samsung Tabs, sorry HTC but in my experience your cameras are usually not that good and on video and music it is hard to beat Samsung (even without Voodoo sound installed)
But....with all of the above said and what I seen on the web, the final prove is on the pudding, so if/when I have one in my hands I may be greatly surprised/pleased...time will tell
What I really would like is to try in our tabs that ultrasonic stylus that was demonstrated in MWC? a wile ago
Hope I make sense (pun intended), Engrish is not my second vodka...or was that third?... and the beers aand...
Nite
Htc flyer has max video playback of 720 p @30 fps with no hdmi so galaxy tab beats it with hands down
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
It can't do cellular call, or can it? So it's a no go for me.
But it looks like a good tablet.

[Q] Keyboard dock?

Hi,
Does anyone know of a keyboard dock for the Note? I haven't managed to find one. It doesn't have to be tailor-made for the Note only, but could be a "universal" one which is compatible with the Note.
I could just use Samsung dock with a bluetooth keyboard next to it of course, but would rather something simpler. I will be using it for word processing when travelling. It's not essential that the Note recognises the dock as a dock but preferred of course.
If you're using some other keyboard setup, I would be interested to hear your recommendations.
Thanks!

I've just ordered my Dell Axim bluetooth keyboard for that exact same reason. Its made for Windows Mobile but will work with Android.
There is also a really good but horribly expensive "iGo stowaway keyboard" at us$180 which looks fantastic.
Both these keyboards have a mount to hold the phone/PDA upright. I've looked for months and these are the only ones I've found. But they appear excellent. Mine should arrive from US in a week if you want to know my experiences

I've ordered the iGo "Ultra Slim" stowaway keyboard. As you said, it's pretty expensive new, but I found one on ebay for £40 ($60).
Let's remember to both post back here once they've arrived so we can see who got the best one
My only concern about the iGo is that it was released about 4 years ago so might be a bit dated.

You think that is dated. I've ordered the much older one made for old Dell PDA's maybe 8 years ago! ;-)
Yeah i'm pretty interested to see how they compare. But from pictures i've seen, it looks like yours was developed for Dell in the form of the one I've ordered. So either they will be the same or yours improved.
I'm happy my research has been good for another member of the Commonwealth ;-)

My Stowaway keyboard arrived and it's really good. I'll post a full review in the next couple of days.
PurpleMelbourne, is your Dell one the X30 or XTBT01? You're right that iGo (now called Think Outside) made both of those for them, but they made two variants. They resold them under loads of other device brands as well (Palm, Compaq etc) and also through Targus. And now they've sold the rights of the XTBT01 to a Japanese company called Thanko who still make them.
Complicated eh?! Hopefully you've got the X30, then we can compare.

Is the N7 for me?

Hey N7 forum,
I'm currently stuck between selling my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 + Keyboard Dock for the Nexus 7.
I'm planning on getting the Nexus 4 Smartphone, which will arrive next week. My question is, should I sell my TF300+Dock for the N7, if I have the N4 (4.7in Screen).
It's quite complicated.
My dislikes of the tablet I currently have:
- Too much like a laptop (but also something I like): During bus rides, I'd love to take out my tablet. One word: too hard. But at coffee shops, it's perfect
- Heavy, and a tad too big
- Slow I/O Hampers the tab's performance (Chrome, Installing/Updating Apps, Music can be a bit slow)
Likes:
- The Keyboard Dock, awesome for blogging and essay writing (I don't have a laptop)
- It's nice
So if someone could give me some insight, it'd be great!
Thanks~
Used to to have a tf201. Sold it to a friend for the same reasons basically, the keyboard was handy but added bulk to the tablet and found myself using it more like a laptop than a tablet.
The thing about the Nexus 7 for factor is that using an in screen keyboard is a lot more viable than on a larger 10 inch tablet. It's just too hard to hold a 10 inch tablet while entering text on a soft keyboard, and obviously the dock is useless for this as well. With the Nexus 7 I use Swift Key 3 in portrait mode and just type with my thumbs and it's very fast as far as soft keyboards go. Granted as a touch typist its still slower than a keyboard but I for one am happy to make the sacrifice in return for the superior portability of the Nexus 7.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Tricky one.
The Nexus 7 is not a laptop replacement. Its not as easy or quick to type on and not as powerful, with a lot less "useful" things you can do with it.
However, add a USB (via OTG, I've heard they work, but I guess you may have power issues) or Bluetooth keyboard and you have a pretty useful piece of kits. Its very portable and can fit in a coat pocket. However, with a case around it, its a bit harder to fit in a pocket. With my Roo Case, I cant fit it in my pocket any longer for example.
Being the size of an average book though, its more than practical for taking out in a bus though. I looked at both and went for the Nexus on cost and functionality. I have a stack of apps for the Nexus and I'm amazed by how useful its becoming. I've set up Cloud Print for instance so it prints out anything to my printer and with Evernote, it saves anything I am browsing and interested in, or with Quill, i can take handwritten notes (which are thus far illegible - I need a better pen device).
Would you take around the Nexus just for the more powerful machine and slightly larger screen? With me, its a no brainer, as my phone is an Xperia Ray and that's got a tiny screen. I wanted a Kindle style tablet that I could carry around and read etc. Would you make use of the 3G for instance? If so, thats another bonus for the Nexus.
Maybe use the Nexus 4 for a couple of weeks and see what the combination of that and the transformer feels like. The nexus 7 isnt going anywhere and as experience has shown, waiting will if anything make it cheaper and better.
How about getting a chromebook as laptop. should be able to write essays and stuff. I dont think you need a N7 if you get a N4, except you want a 7inch tablet.
I myself use the iPad of my father occasionally and it is far too big and far too heavy. its almost a pain in the ass writing and/or surfing on it while lying on the couch because it is too big/heavy. Thats why I choose the nexus 7, because it is light and smaller, imho perfect size.
make a pro/con list and think about the chromebook
My 2 cents.
I currently have:
1 Acer Timeline 1830T with 256GB SSD (main work computer) (11.6")
2 Asus Transformer TF101 w/keyboard dock
3 Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0
4 Nexus 7 3g being delivered on Monday
The Timeline is great. Does everything, great form factor.
The Transformer is caught between a tablet and a notebook. It's an awkward tablet and with the keyboard it's not that different in size from my Acer
Galaxy Tab is nice (it was an experiment for me, we had a couple left over from a giveaway at my company so I've been playing with it over the last two months). It really fits a niche for when I travel on business. I have to have my Windows laptop for work but there's lots of times where the Galaxy Tab is easy to pull out and do something (I was stuck on a plane for an hour at the gate last week in ORD when they were de-icing - watched a movie). Only problem with the Sammy is that to get online, I have to whip out my mifi and fire it up. Hence the purchase of the Nexus 3G. If I can get it to tether a data plan, I may even give up my mifi.
Conclusion, if you have a regular computer, I'd get the Nexus 7 (I ordered a minisuit bluetooth keyboard cover for it) for when you are mobile. If you don't have a regular computer and the transformer is filling that niche, I'd think twice (perhaps your Nexus 4 can fill the mobile need) For me, a 7" tablet is an accessory not a mainstay.
You have no reasons to buy N7 if you have N4 and Transformer, exept if you are a gadget freak like most of us
Hey guys! I'm also about to buy this tablet. I like many things about it(extremely cheap, hardware wise etc) but my only concern is the screen size. 7" sounds small compared to, say the iPad. I know N7 is much more handy and it can be carried with you every where you go but it's a tablet after all. Gaming, movies and web browsing? I'm into big screens and I think 4.3" is way too small for a phone, now will I be disappointed with the "small" screen of the N7.
Someone already mentioned in this thread that the small screen is great for typing. That's true I believe... Cheers.
Btw, I'm looking for a device that would replace my laptop, which is broken. I will still have my netbook, but I won't be using it for leisure due to it's crappy performance.
EDIT: I would buy some kind of a BT keyboard if they work since I'd be doing a lot of school work(+ a LOT of IM'ing ) with it...

Well, I've heard different stories... In almost any review I've read, they say it's the best tablet(for its price anyway) out there. Can you justify your statement? :silly:
The TF300 does not need the dock, so you can use without it. I have one too and use mainly without the keyboard. Also have a G3 that is 4.8"and no display space taken up by a nav bar.
The N7 is cramp for viewing space, compared to the TF300. The N7 is a nice tweener device and handier for travel, but IMO, not a practical replacement for the TF300. More like a complimentary device with the TF300.
i had the exact same thing as you, tf300t with dock that i liked, but i had to take a bag if i wanted to take it anywhere
i sold my transformer and got the n7, and i havent looked back once, i though going from 10" to 7" would be a big deal but its not, its easy to hold in one hand and is quick as hell, i couldnt recommend the plunge anymore i LOVE my n7

Looks interesting. I'd give it a go for 200 bucks. The iPad version seem to be getting good reviews.
looks like a macbook
i like it
I don't know if I would call it a laptop replacement. The site didn't give enough details to make a decent guess
My guess, it would be what we see with the iDevice versions or something similar to ASUS Transormer Prime/Infinity Pads. What I think you're getting is just a device just brings an Android experience to a larger screen and nicer keyboard to use. I'm almost want to say it's just going to mirror your device display.
If you're familiar with Android and normal OSs for notebooks--Windows, OSX, various Linus distros--then you'll know they're not exactly the same. Android is very capable OS, but it has it's limits compared to other OS choices
That said, it could a good choice for someone, maybe a student, for two hundred dollars. A lot will depend on what you need to use.
Looks great to me. I'd be a buyer. Even better, they should make it with a space in the back that you can pop your device in... Just order the right spacers and it should fit snugly.
Swyped from the closest Galaxy.
Wow, holy ****. I'd buy one in a heart beat.

Did some reading on the Interwebs, and my enthusiasm is dampened. It seems that Clamcase is not a reputable company, and their products are of awful quality with nonexistent support. The idea is a fantastic one, I'd daydreamed of something similar (with a backlit keyboard and a big user replaceable SSD), but these guys are worse than vapor-ware, apparently.

disappointing to hear. I forget which company makes it, I think ASUS, where there is a smartphone and tablet combo. The phone actually goes into the tablet. This is similar except it's a laptop and USB cable or cradle.
It definitely could be useful for some.

Nope. Lapdock has two connections, one hdmi, the other usb.
I use to use something like this for Windows Mobile called a Redfly that was more like a netbook size. This would still make sense to me except my Series 9 Ultrabook is already a better option and as thin and light as i need it to be.
The main thing missing for me in Android/iOS is the multi-window support, but if a product like this would come out and still support multi-window like the Note 2 does, it would be a good solution for not having a super light/thin but expensive ultrabook.
Wonder if it uses the old 5 pin mhl or the new one that the gn2 and gs3 use.
Guess I'll get a bluetooth keyboard trackpad combo and wait for this:

I've got a lapdock and may get the Mhl cable to see if I can get it to work. The lapdock is just use and hdmi.

unless both devices have MHL built into them, you'll need to get a MHL adapter.
I had no idea if the PadFone is available in the US either. I just remember the device existing and it's what device reminded me of. It's nice idea since most people are getting and using various smartphones. Why not trying to combine with something to be more robusts. I just see, as of right now, being limited because of the Android OS itself and how to apps designed and written. No mobile office suite compares to features and use to a desktop counterpart. Although, given the costs, it can me a nice alternative.
Personally, I would just get an older laptop if to fit the need. Other than maybe a need for bigger screen, I would just use a portable keyboard and stand for the phone and call it good. Not that I would recommend for writing a paper for school. I hold that statement for tablets too.

it looks like they'll be making docks for specific phones, so I imagine the note 2's dock will be the correct one. i'm guessing they'd also make a generic interface for non-so-popular phones, perhaps cable-only. In which case you can use the 11-5pin converter that Samsung sells.
i wonder how the keyboard/trackpad works. i'm guessing bluetooth?

[Q] Should I give this tab another go?

Hey guys here's a little background.
I've had just about every well known tablet ever put out...
After selling my beloved nexus 10, I bought the note 10.1 2014 as my latest tablet and honestly hated a few things...
The screen. I could clearly make out pixels. the tiny bezels I would find myself accidentally touching the sides of the screen unwanted. Finally the physical home and back button with no screen buttons. When in portrait mode, I would have to hit the back button on the bottom (side at this angle) of the tablet to go back and that would just be very awkward... So it's gone.
I also played with a 701t and liked the screen much better, could not make out the pixels. but am not too crazy about thick bezel size. I understand they need to be that to work with the dock but the dock itself is troublesome and I am waiting for definite news of fixed issues.
After years and years of android only, I am writing this post from my new iPad air 32gb. I didn't want to be one of the ignorant people that knocks apple without trying their product first. I love the screen resolution and think the ratio works well, but I miss the android environment dearly. I can say I gave this a go and now am ready to be sure that android is far superior to iOS. I only paid 440 for a brand new sealed 32gb air so I won't lose money selling it.
Having said that, I am sick and tired of waiting for a new nexus 10 device and am thinking of getting another 701t for a daily driver. I guess what I am looking for is a bit of convincing on why this would be the right choice. How is the tegra for gaming? How is the daily experience?
I am continuously looking for perfection and understand well that it doesn't exist, but I do like having things close to it.
Looking forward to some responses from you 701t owners.
Thanks in advance
The tablet running CromiX has performance optimization, less software issues than Asus stock, less bloat as well. The dock yes has problem but if you hold off on buying it they week fix it. The hardware is decent, I fixed the loose screen bezel on my own no problem now. With this price range and performance you only have this and note 10.1 which is 100$ more

Love my device. Owned the whole Transformer line. Best of the bunch, and not even close!
Sent from my New Transformer Infinity Pad TF701T using Tapatalk HD
I agree, the TF701 is the best so far. It's so fast out of the box that for me there's only one reason to unlock and custom rom it: I find it boring to just use it - gotta play with it.
The TF700 introduced me to flashing. It was so goddarn buggy and slow - I just couldn't stand it (and I will be forever grateful for that). The 701 is a great device out of the box. My only gripe is that I still like the screen on the 700 much better. Everything seems either pale or yellowish on the 701 and yes - I've maxed out the few options the Splendid app provides.
Even with all these problems with the dock and bezel fitting issues, I still have to say I'm glad I went with Transformer once again (upgrading from Prime). The big boost in specs really made this tablet a lot more productive than the Prime, and not to mention the great WiFi signal finally makes browsing worth-while on this machine.
If you're on the fence because of the dock, I would suggest to wait for another few month and wait for the corrected batch, hopefully Asus will pick up their game about that. Or you could also get a separate bluetooth keyboard, not as convenient but might work better in the end. I am currently on my 4th dock and even though it's another Oct one, it seems to be the best so far and hardly disconnects, so unless it acts out again within 30 days, I will be keeping the dock.
I just wanted to mention this here.
If anyone in the UK is looking to buy one of these then i recommend amazon. I had 3 from ebuyer and they were all 10.2013 models and had the dock disconnection issue. Ebuyer customer service is 5 star and exchanged the defective tablets without an issue but after 3 i thought i would give amazon a try and they have 2013.12 models and the dock connection in snug like the TF201. I have only just received it so cant tell if there is any other issues yet but the dock is a 100% better fit.
Hopefully this helps someone.
Thanks

Is the Dock the 12.2013 model? or the Tablet? You are the one of the few to say they received a December build. I have an October tablet and a November dock.

I have had 7 docks, 5 from Amazon USA, and all had the disconnect issue. I like th TF701, it replaces my TF101, but I am about ready to give up. Amazon has been great with customer service but the product is defective. BTW, one of those docks was an 11.2013 manufacture.
Hm this December dock thing is making me consider sending this one back again, since it still disconnect occasionally, and also the number 5 key became sticky and gets stuck for half a second since 2 days ago... Hopefully my next dock will be the magical December dock

By all means! Keep sending them back until you get one that works 100% - as you are entitled to!

Is the Dock the 12.2013 model? or the Tablet? You are the one of the few to say they received a December build. I have an October tablet and a November dock.

Ok guys, after a few hours of use i can say that the dock is not as snug as first thought BUT it is still alot better than the 2013.10 builds i had. I have had no disconnects no matter how i tilt the screen. So in my opinion this is a keeper.
@devilsaces, i am guessing this is a december dock since my tablet and dock came together in the package (thats how we get them in UK) and on the bottom of the retail box was the date 2013.12. Also the tablet and dock share the same serial number.

Thanks for the info. In the US they ship the dock and tablet separate. I'm not even sure if they are shipping December builds here. My November dock is much better than the October builds but does disconnect occasionally. As of now, Amazon pulled the dock from their store (not even under review) and are just selling through third parties. So I'm not going to mess with returns to see if the December dock, if it exists in the US, is better. If I return its going to be both tablet and dock for something different but there is not much out there at that price range that is better. I don't like samsung so only the Sony xperia is another option, or Windows tablets. I have until tomorrow to decide.
I'm intrigued by the ASUS Transformer Book Duet TD300. A Windows/Android dual boot tablet. Unfortunately it does not get released until the end of March.
I would say so. This device is about double what the tf101 is. Moores law every 2 years you get double.

Wow, thanks for all the responses. The iPad Air is gone. I wanted to order the tf701t from amazon but it looks like the price went up to $427 and it's being sold by a third party. I don't want to mess with that in case I have to return and it's an issue. I will check my local tigerdirect to see if they have them. I guess I will give it a go and hope for the best.
I'll let you know how it works out Who knows maybe I'll get lucky and get a good keyboard locally.
Hopefully by now they are not shipping out 3-4 month old defective products but you never know. Until Asus officially places a call back on the defective devices, retails could still have them on their shelves.
Holy moly. Did you give dead trigger 2 a try. Not expecting such quality and performance. Console quality. People crabbing about it. Glass half empty. I don't get it.
WARNING: Some screen protectors have rubbery surfaces not suitable for a stylus(ZAGG,Skinomi). RUBBER on RUBBER!
Definitely go for it. Check Tiger Direct if they still have it for $399.99 (no tax and shipping is free if you hook up your AMEX with ShopRunner). I got mine from them. There was a $50 rebate (purchased before Feb 8, 2014). It was a no brainer for me. Despite the dock still having issue, this is a great tablet at a bargain price. On the cpu and screen resolution, only the new Samsungs (I'm talking about Android tablets only) have similar class of CPU and screens but they are easily $200 more for the 32 gig model. I thought about waiting for the new Nexus 10. But Nexus 10 will never have external microSD slot. That's a big no-no for me. So far I've been happy with my tf701. It's so fast. And the screen resolution is so awesome.
If the keyboard was stable, I would get this. Since not stable, I am getting Best Buy to match the current Costco price of $530 for the 32gb version of the Note. The smaller bezel, less hot running, less battery hungry chipset and non proprietary connector justify the extra bucks for me. I had keyboard issues with the TF300 that I recently sold, so appears an issue they never really fixed with Android. Even the T100 Windows tablet has some keyboard issues, though not on the scale of Android.
overblown issue
I think the Dock issue is way overblown. I bought my tf701 (Typing on it now in bed) pre-order before it came out. I've been using it as my primary work laptop for months now. I have the disconnect issue, but in practice it really doesn't effect anything. It only disconnects when you're opening or closing the tablet, but is fine when it's open and you're tapping on the screen or keyboard. I use VDI 10 hours day, so the dock isn't optional for me. But really, I've been very productive this entire time and I'm happy with my purchase. The disconnect issue only gets mildly annoying because every now and then it does cause my tablet to not come out of sleep and I have to reboot with power switch, but this is more like a once a month occurrence. I travel all the time as well and this thing has held up great.
For VDI I use Splashtop and also vmware view.

Maybe your one is like that, but plenty of other people have had disconnects when it is open and they are using it normally. The amount of problem varies between devices.
