I am currently running CM10, I'm completely satisfied by the ROM itself, but a quick question popped up - how do I install a custom kernel on my new ROM? Which one is the best for CM10?
And excuse me for such question - what is the main purpose of kernel?
Thank you in advance!

Hey
I really prefer the mackay kernel..it save allot of battery..plus u can resd the guide they got on their threads..the steps are available there itself..

Could you add a link to the thread? I can't find the original one, really.
EDIT: Found it, thanks for advice.
Any other suggestions?

I use devil kernel I will link it soon, with devil kernel you can save battery, but you still have performance, and if you install devil kernel manager from play store (first one),you will be able to switch your Wi-Fi between power saver and long range mode: )
P.S. sorry if the are any mistakes, but I just installed touch pal, it is a so cool swipe keyboard: )

Wow, thanks for this one. Waiting for a link. I believe it is compatible with my mentioned Android version?
And could you briefly tell me how to install it properly?
I am pretty sure I know how to but last time I hard-bricked my phone, so yeah..

Can you brielfly write instructions on how to install it? I hard-bricked my phone once, so wanna be totally sure
Yes, I liked it to you, just install it like so:
0.have a jelly bean rom installed
1.wipe all caches like dalvik and do factory reset
2. Install a room what would you like (Android 4.1.2 jelly bean) (install Gatos if you need them)
3. Reboot
4. Let it load fully (boot )
5.reboot in recovery
6.install devil kernel what I linked to you
7.reboot
8.download devil kernel manager
(if you swipe right in the tabs, and course misc, there is stronger Wi-Fi option)
9.enjoy
10. Press thanks... (not really I won't force you, just kidding xD ) so the real 10. Is ask if you have trouble: )

I already have Android 4.1.2 installed, so what does the second step is for? You mean I have to re-install my ROM?

Of you want, it is optional, if you have jelly bean already set up, then just install kernel them reboot, and download devil kernel manager from play store: )

I followed the android soul guide (google "Upgrade the Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 to TouchWiz 4 via value pack firmware XXJW4")
and then rooted it, same website, instructions are pretty clear .
Once done, you have a nice base to flash CM9 or 10 before going to slim ics/bean (as stated in their installations notes: GB->Slim bean needs to go through a CM9 or 10 before)

I figure that out,but thanks
i didn't now that slim bean requires that.what is the difference between CM9 and 10?
i have downgraded back to german ics 4.0.4 .. it's already rooted .. i was thinking of flashing a better safe kernel!
i need a good battery life and better performance one do u recommend any?

Speedmod kernel.
Very stable.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
what bout hydracore?
Sent from N7000 at the corner of this rounded earth ♥
See.you need battery and stability.hydracore ain bad but acc to me sucks battery.in my case speedmod is awesome.

PhilZ stock kernels are perfect combination for stock 4.0.4 , I use stock germany XXLRT rom and of course a PhilZ XXLRT kernel. It is perfect, not a single issue in about month of using, perfectly smooth and stable. This kernel is in a perfect middle of speedmod and hydracore. I try speedmod and it is a bit laggy for me, a hydracore is good but not battery friendly, so for now and on i recommend PhilZ because its stock, smooth, with very good battery life, and it is a brickbug free
Hope I helped!
Cheers!
Use the stock one. philz kernel. what can be better than that.
thanks guys .. can i directly flash phillz kernel over my speedmod?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
yes. either with CWM using zip file or with mobile Odin using a tar file
i just did , thanks .. though the kernel doesnt say its philz it says n7000 xxlrk 8f something
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
yes cuz its pure stock kernel with emmc erase command disabled, and modified cwm. no need to worry
thanks again one more question .. i have a blackcna jelly bean custom rom .. can i just restore it when i want to? and backup this too
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
if its as a nandroid backup yes u can.
And use the thanks button Sir instead or writing it
hahaha okay.. how do i know if its a nandroid or not ? sorry
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Hehehe....nandroid backup is made by using cwm recovery.ok.
So if you used recovery advance option to backup ur rom plus files then that is called nandroid.
And why are you so hesitating in hitting thanks.are we demanding money?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
hahahaa i did .. its just that xda app i guess ..
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
if phillz kernel is just stock with emmc erase command disabled, how can it be any better to the battery life?

quoting dr.ketan http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31914373&postcount=6 :
Battery management/performance will same as on stock kernel.
Again input battery statistics or comparing with other custom kernel having no meaning. B'coz this is stock kernel and it will be same as stock kernel, no more no less. So kindly avoid such kind of discuss. Right now Phill have not indicate to add tweak to kernel, so no meaning to put request for under/overclocking and so and so. For this you always have choice for custom kernel, there are already nice custom kernels are available on development section. This is only for people want pure stock kernel but patched brick bug with added recovery function. That's it.

its not.. its just the same as the stock kernel.. no customizations like undervolt or overclock
I've tried jellybeer hydrocore etc etc. can't get them to work . Any ideas ? I need one for some apps I use ,otherwise id use the stock as its grt.

The stock kernel is perform very well in terms of battery performance.
And consider smooth and stable.
Tips: go pages 49 or 51 to get the modify rom ( about 768mb ). Flash it over ebyee jb rom with wipe cache and dalvik cache only. This modify rom will give almost the fix such as root explorer and restore problem thru titanium backup.
Good luck mate.

Hi guys , I had Miui installed on my i9000 and did a reset to wipe the phone so I could give it to my friend to use for a while. After the wipe...it began bootloop so I reinstalled clockwork mod and now whenever I try wipe anything or try mount a storage I get the message " unknown volume for path " and that comes up quite a few lines. I'm guessing my partition has been wiped etc so I need to flash a new rom on here. Phone doesn't boot into anything apart from recovery. Any idea's how?
Thanks !

Do u have opened phone...i have one solution for this but it is temporary not permanent...Go to Download mode for 3 min and after 3 minutes restart your phone again..cwm bootloop occurrs when i9000 is unable to read internal memory...
Other pption is to apply dbdata.rfs.tar through odin..this method is also temporary..phone will work but when u shutdown it and restart after 1 to 2 minutes cwm bootloop again comes..

Hi mate , I found a solution to our problems. Easiest way to sort it out is basically download Gingerbread for the i9000 , then flash over the phone using Odin. Once that's done , install Clockworkmod recovery. This install a custom rom such as MIUI or CM10. I'd say MIUI is the easiest rom that works straight away. Or you can keep gingerbread.
Hope I helped

you need 2.3.6 bootloader to get jelly bean working, so visit My Android Collections and use the JVU 2.3. 6 ROM with 512 PIT , root and CWM kernel as your base to upgrade from rescue and recovery kits section ...upgrade to ICS first than to a Jelly Bean ROM. But First backup your efs folder
your problem is due to wrong version of CWM used in 2.3.5
Ok thnx very much for your help...
