After running many different setups, I went back to totally stock. I unlocked boot loader and rooted but that's it. This thing flies!! Actually did the same with my Nexus 4 and same thing! Surprised at how smooth the devices are unmodified. Tried an assortment of Roms and kernels, always wipe with a fresh ROM. My boot loader was outdated with my nexus 7 but can't imagine that making a running performance difference. Maybe the complete flashing of all internal memory from Stock Google images helped? Anyone else notice the same? Let's see how long I can resist the urge the flash a custom setup...

I have a galaxy s phone and i had many custom roms, but thats because the phone doesnt have oficial android 4.0
While on nexus 7 after i tried some custom roms i came back to stock, theres no reason for me to install a custon rom or kernel, now i have only root.
I run stock rooted and it is great, the only reason I ever used roms on my other devices was to get rid of bloat ware and to have an updated version of android for speed but it is not needed on my Nexus 7 maybe down the road I will run some roms but for now I am good with stock rooted

Well im just waiting on my nexus 7 coming.
I've tried just about every rom imaginable on my galaxy i9000 and settled on slim bean, but that's just to do with making an old phone good again. I think like you guys I'll just unlock and root my n7. See how long I can keep it that way before i can no longer resist.

i was stock for 6 months or so until 4.2 came out. sadly it was very noticeably slower than 4.1 and i finally decided to flash a ROM and kernel (PA and franco).
as far as i can tell it is 100% as stable as stock for everything i've tried and much faster/more customizeable so i'm not disappointed. i agree though, I would've loved to stay stock rooted. you guys didn't encounter lag when 4.2 came?
although, I did read that the 4.2 problems were from upgrading and I'll admit I never gave 4.2 a full wipe try. But then again, that's supposed to be one of the nice things about stock. I don't want to have to wipe for an OTA update.
I had the slowdown and freezing on 4.2 so I just tried cm10 and I will probably never go back to stock !!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
just got my n7 and i have been toying and flashing roms but i have to say i was impressed with stock
Before I bought Nexus 7, I was playing with different ROMs on my kindle fire and got tired with instability and upgrade issues. Now I can't be happier with stock and rooted only.

Running stock ROM which is rooted on my nexus 7 tablet. As long Google keeps the updates coming for the nexus 7 I'll be good.

I use multirom, and have both stock 4.2.1 and rasbeanjelly based on 4.2.1 installed. I find each one has advantages/disadvantages, depending on what my needs are at a particular time. Being able to boot into the rom of my choice for the needed task is a huge plus. Why decide on which you want when you can have both. Although, I understand that not everyone needs, or even wants two roms installed. But hey, thats what we love about android. The option to choose based on our individual wants/needs.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I have stock 4.2.1 with root. Only issue with stock is the battery sucks. Also no volume booster app works
I must admit that I get used to some "custom" features. But I prefer stock-like roms than totally customized stuff (like MIUI, that I used to use for few days and never wanna use again). IMHO choosing stock when you root is a waste of possibilities and choosing too much mods is overusing of your device.
I like stock rom but 4.2 is unstable for me and i install pa 2.54 and i have tablet mode and 4.1 <3
Stock (rooted) 4.2.1. Smooth as silk. Not one problem.

Stock sucks.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Yea, this is pretty much the only device i use that stays on stock 4.2. It just feels cleaner. The only thing i miss is themes, but i will say that not running a complete theme coaxes more creativity out of me when designing my home screens. Apex and UCCW help fill that void for me. Pretty much every rom ive run has had some hiccups, and stock is no exception, but i feel like stock and a lean kernel, or francos kernel, is all the customization that i need. PA is awesome though, and shows that some roms can absolutely shine on android tabs.

Stock the way man and root

Do you maybe think that Google, knowing that there's a high percentage of people who actually know what they're doing with technology using Nexus devices, are using Nexus owners as guinea pigs for ROM updates, having us basically as beta testers? Quite clever of them if they are...
In fact, they're probably watching us now...

Rolling another green android as we speak.
I am definitely addicted to Android since discovering MIUI.us 2.2.3. Take the best features of IOS, add to it the best features of Android, throw in a liberal dose of nuance, style and flair and you have the perfect ROM.
I never thought i'd be saying this but it really is an order of magnitude better than Cyanogenmod. The infamous Android lag is all but gone! The N1 touchscreen wonks..gone! It's like i died and woke up in smartphone heaven. Most of the apps i used to use i don't need any more. Decent File Browser? Check. Decent Browser? Check. Decent SMS/Dialer/Alarm? Check!
What i don't need in a ROM are a hundred features that i have to turn off because i don't use them. What i do need in a ROM are core features that just work well. Consider me converted!
I seriously wouldn't trade my two year old phone for anything on the market right now, not even if it were free. Not a chance!
Wich phone you own?

pure curiosity
first, i have the android phone, then switch to iOS then at now, android again feeling to be more comfy with android (though iOS still rocks on perf and display)
but guess, loving now android coz to put my dev-inside
MIUI.us is working out so well for me. I have apps that never worked well on CM7 that are working perfectly now. The famous N1 touchscreen wonk has disappeared completely, (which is a miracle in itself), and not only are the stock apps better than AOSP, (Gallery, you know i'm talking about you), but they're better than the usual replacements. (Sorry, Quickpic).
A big plus is a beautiful U.I that is consistent throughout the software and on par with IOS. It's like somebody read my mind and made a bespoke ROM for me! It's all the little touches too. The nice animations, the way the music fades out when you pause it, (not to mention Lyrics support and a pretty visualisation), options for re-ordering Bookmarks in the Browser, a good Notes app, in built backup for apps, system and theme. It's incredibly fast and smooth too. Without the OC i had in CM7 it actually performs better!
Pics for the uninitiated:
How about a stock Data usage app, or a Firewall:
How good is that?
I love my android phone...
Still my first (galaxy mini), but i hope my next one will be better...

Im going to flash from eclipse. Should i do a full flash or is just a wipe/data reset ok?
Nice ROM. Debloated, but still has some of the Blur and VZW apps I do use. With the Razr M Launcher addition, I might make this my regular ROM.
Question though...this comes with two home screens to choose from. I have the Razr M home screen as my default, but what about that second launcher that still is supposedly present and just covered up by the Launcher being currently used? Is the background launcher consuming extra memory and battery just by being there? I would tend to think it is, to some extent. In that case, should I freeze or uninstall the unused launcher? (This is something I've always wondered about secondary launchers, not just this one.)
Other than that, nice and effective ROM. I look forward to future updates.
You can freeze it with no problem. I leave it as a system/app just in case someone wipes data after they install the rom.

Lol, i figured it out. Thanks to google for answering my question
Hey all.
Basically i just want to hear all your thoughts on your current devices, and what you think of the next device in that product family.
My thoughts.
My first android device was the Motorola defy which really sold android for me, the fact i could treat a phone horribly by accident and it not care was a really solid selling point. The developer community for it was really quite strong too, it even receiving CM10 before my current S2.
The original transformer isn't the prettiest, lightest and fastest tablet anymore (not that it was ever lightest SO MUCH GLASS) but it was and is my first tablet and still works amazingly today. Good job Asus.
My current phone is the Samsung Galaxy S 2 which i bought outright after everyone that had one giving raving reviews and a quick view of the forum showed a very active community. Little did i know the issues the developers faced to get the aosp roms working properly, it is not pretty and it is entirely the fault of Samsung and their hardware partners (I am looking at you, yamaha). I know this and love the developers for supporting my S2 so well, especially codeworkx whom has been moving devices lately.
I love the idea of getting the S3, but i would only be going for the larger screen and if all i want is the larger screen why not go even larger and get the Note 2? Especially after its drop test video. It is a tank of a phone.
The One X+ Kind of interests me with unlocked bootloaders etc. But the fact i have to flash the kernel separately to the ROM every time (or at least that is my understanding) would really annoy me.
After the defy i would rush to a unlocked bootloader on a Motorola. That and screen size were the only issues i had with my defy.
But my current plan runs out in December which is only a few months away and i would love some ideas on devices coming into Christmas season.
Currently i am thinking Note 2, but i don't want to have half baked aosp roms because of hardware support. Ideas?
And yes doing a BYO 6 month plan with my local carrier is an option.
How bout this one?

There are some really cool devs and contributors who have written apps and scripts that enable you to flash everything all at once, kernel included.

I have the SGSIII and the One X. In the case of the One X (not the One X+ but it's basically a refresh of the One X) yes, you do have to extract and flash the boot.img via your pc using fastboot and the flash the modules via recovery...not as bad as it sounds. It's a great phone.
The SGSIII not only has a bigger screen but a higher resolution than the SGSII. There are many ROMs for it and in the case of the US variants I've flashed ROMs made for the AT&T variant on my T-Mobile one. (The international version also has great development.)

Thanks Babydoll one of my friends has the one x which i rooted/cm10ed for him the other day, it was an interesting look into HTC custom roms and i must say it is not overly difficult or anything. And i did see the scripts Tommy was talking about, they would be nice in easing the transition. How do you find the one x build quality? I heard it was hit and miss between users.

Hi, I really fancy getting this phone due to its form factor, but all the reviews seem to disagree about its performance. Antutu scores (around 13500) suggest it should be much faster than snapdragon devices but some reviews say it's average....Confused!
Anyone give me some real life impressions of how fast it is? (my other options are the big boys, htc one x etc... Not sure about size)
Also do you think Cm 10.1 will arrive eventually after x86 issues are solved?

Not sure about CM 10.1 but dang, this phone is fast! Been using it for months now and it litteraly flies. And that is without the upgrade to JB even.
Testers from this forum found it as fast the Samsung Galaxy S3 so don't worry about the speed.
I agree. I'm not rooted and have ICS and I find this phone faster than any other I've had (recently Desire and Desire S)

Hello ALL did you discover lags, slowdown between screens after update ? JB on my mobile (xt890) working so slow. I don't know what is the problem. I didn't do factory reset after update. What you thinking, that could be a problem? I started using difference launcher (NOVA) and seem my problem gone in 80% because I really like Motorola's launcher with amazing circles widget.
Lucky you having JB!
The first thing I'll do after updating to JB is to factory reset the phone as I'm sure that this resets everything and should stop any problems left over from the previous operating system.

My RAZR i is running stock JB and I get a split second of lag when going back to the home screen from an app. I think that the launcher doesn't keep in memory like the ones you get from play store. So it has to reopen the launcher when you go home. Not a big deal. As far as speed, I get over 4100 in quadrant. Beats out the Asus transformer and matches the one x (according to quadrant) so yeah. Fast fast. Love this phone.

Thank you for the great replies, it sounds like it performs way above its mid range billing. I get the feeling that a lot of the online reviews try to compare it with the likes of the gs3, when it's real competition like the HTC one s seems at least a little slower, has no memory expansion and it's way more expensive at the minute.
There are some great deals on it at the moment, so I'll go for it. Just have to hope it ships on jelly bean. I'm sure I'll be around the forum a bit once I get it, everyone seems really helpful. Thanks

I had vijendra's, and was pretty happy with it in spite of the problems, but, now, I'm thrilled with KitKat. There's no comparison. If you're careful with your configuration, it's speedy and stable. Also, I've run across a couple of apps that caused random reboots, namely Google Voice and Greenify. But, I'm running almost all of the same apps as I am on my N5. Miraculous.

Up until a couple of weeks ago I was still using my Nexus One as my daily driver. It was my first and only smart phone up until that point. The most current ROM I was using was the Pixeldroid port by tommypacker (fantastic ROM, by the way).
However, I felt the phone was starting to show its age so I retired it. It is now back to running CM 7.2 and being used as my music player in my car. I couldn't bear to toss it in some drawer somewhere to be forgotten, so I'm glad I still get some use out of it.
My loyal old Nexus One is now my girlfriend's daily driver.
