If I'll do Restore to factory defaults, will I loose root? Reason is that after rooting and installing couple of apps from market, I can't see task bar anymore. Seems it's hidden and it slides out for half a second with every task bar update, like clock change. I can't figure out how to bring that bar back.

Yes, you usually loose the su binary on the Factory Restore. The factory restore usually leave the /system/apps
intact. The /system/xbin is "Restored" which is where you will find the su binary file. Having said this, Superuser.apk
will remain intact giving you the false appearance that you have not lost Root, yet when a program tries to call the
su binary Root will fail. So, a long story, short: You will have to perform the steps to Root after performing a
Factory Restore. Follow our simple Root instructions, we will have you Rooted in less than 10 to 30 minutes.
Thank you for explanation.

I know this might be a stupid question and if it is I apologize.
If you root the phone can you do a factory reset on it?
I ran into some threads that look like you cant until there is an unroot available.
I just wanted to get a conformation on this so I don't do something stupid.
Thank you
Yes, you can Factory Reset.
You can't Factory Reset if you've frozen/removed/renamed /system/app/ apps (bloatware, etc..).
Factory reset will wipe /data so any downloaded apps will be removed, user configuration settings/passwords/etc.. will be removed...
SU will remain (as it's in /system/bin or /system/xbin) but SuperUser is gone....so you'll want to reinstall that since it's the "control system" for what has SU access.
What happens is people delete/rename/freeze things that are required to "setup" the phone and a Factory Reset wipes those settings....and then can't run the app necessary to configure those settings.
It's not root that causes the problem...it's the users.
Factory Reset is fine, unless you make /system file changes.
Thanks for that information. I just unrooted my phone for 2 important reasons:
1. because I'm a noob
2. because I'm a noob
I do not want to have to keep up with what I have frozen/renamed and do not want to brick my phone. I will keep reading on this wonderful forum until i feel confident enough to make intelligent decisions about what I doing
In the mean time I'm gonna (KISS)

quick question, might be dumb but im new to this whole rooting stuff and I don't wanna mess something up.
I rooted my D3 and uninstalled slacker radio, blockbuster, and citrix receiver.
I didn't mess with anything else but I wanna do a factory reset and start all over.
should I just reintall these apps from the market or can I just do a factory reset without them?

Does a factory reset of a rooted but otherwise stock 6.890 droid3 remove clockworkmod ? I want to back out to where I can install SafeStrap2 instead. Then kexec Hash's ICS and maybe JB, someday.
I have so far refused the 7.905 OTA.
Nothing is frozen or deleted.

Installing safestrap over the top of bootstrap (clockworkmod) should remove all traces of bootstrap (clockworkmod)
To answer your question though, no. A factory reset deletes the /data partition, with app data, etc.

I'm pretty sure you need to uninstall the bootstrap app, and safestrap will remove the actual recovery

So far I have uninstalled the boostrap app and then flashed 7.905 OTA.
Lost root, so I have to re-root before anything else, right ?

Factory Reset For Update
I would like to unroot my Samsung Galaxy S3 (AT&T) because I would like to be able to update my phone (I am still running Android 4.0.4). I have tried to update my phone multiple times, but it always says:
"- - Installing: /sdcard/update.zip"
"Finding update package..."
"E: Can't mount /sdcard/update.zip"
"Installation aborted"
I have tried deleting SU, but it still hasn't worked. I was wondering if I could factory reset my phone in order to, I guess, unroot, which would allow me to update my phone. If you are wondering if I have a backup, I have my phone backed up to Samsung Kies on my laptop (Will that also keep all of my saved games/apps/contacts/ect.?).

Ask in Samsung Galaxy S3 forum, not here.
Howdy all!
When I install an appp on my phone (like fb messenger) for the first time everything works great, including push notifications.
Whenever I clean install a new ROM, like i've just done going from CM10 to CM10.1, and I restore the app+data from Titanium Backup push notifications never work. I can only get it working if I completely uninstall and reinstall the app from the Play Store.
Does anyone have a method for solving this problem, or can tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!
Try clearing the data of the app you restored in settings/apps.

Thank you for your reply. That's what I've had to do, and doing so brings back push notification functionality.
I was just wondering if there a way I could get it back without removing data and having to start from scratch, for future reference.
I've tried deleting the bloatware manually using a root explorer but it isn't letting me delete them. I've tried using Titanium Backup as well and it says it uninstalls the apps, but when I check my app drawer they're still there. What's wrong with my phone? All root apps are working perfectly so I have no idea what's going on. Anyone know what the problem is? This is on my Verizon Moto X, by the way.
Try freezing apps with titanium backup instead of deleting them.

Tried that, nothing happens. I've never seen this on any phones I've rooted in the past and have no idea how to go about fixing it.
I believe the moto x root method only allows you to make permanent changes when booted through the recovery. So try that.

What do you mean exactly? Go into recovery and reboot from there? Oh and by the way, freezing in TiBu worked, but I need to uninstall the MyVerizon app. It doesn't work. When I open it it just freezes up, hence why I'm trying to remove it so that I can install it from the Play Store directly.

Recovery is hijacked into a version of the system with system-write enabled. So it is no longer a recovery. All you need to do is boot into recovery and it will seem like you're booting normally, but you can do root changes. Then reboot normally after you're done.
Also, this is why I don't like to root my moto x. Way too complicated and it messes with OTAs. (never take an OTA when already rooted, since you don't have a real recovery you will end up in a boot loop. There are certain steps you need to take.)

Wow, that seems like a really complicated root exploit. I wasn't aware it was like that. The only reason I rooted was to add the one-click toggles to the quicksettings page in the notification bar and to add in a few other toggles (e.g. rotation toggle). The bloatware was just something I noticed today that I figured I'd remove (mostly the MyVerizon app, since I actually need that to work since I use it frequently). I am aware that I should never take an OTA, though. That part is clear to me. Thanks for the help, man!

Are you using safestrap? Check the settings in TIBU, is there an option for freezing system apps? Maybe that's the problem.

Before you go deleting bloatware--could you send me the "CallerID" bloatware app? I really need it; if you do, I'll walk you through every step of the way.

I honestly have no clue. :| It's only on the Verizon MotoX as far as I know. It's "CallerID" something. It's in /system/apps. The icon is green, I know that much.
Is there away I can root this phone without having to factory reset it? I was kinda spoiled by Odin when I was with the galaxy line. Just one click flash and done. I was hoping HTC had something similar but I haven't found it yet.

in order to root it, you have to start by unlocking your bootloader through htcdev. this wipes your phone, there's no way I know to get around it.
you could back up all your stuff first. Helium (carbon) is the only app I know of that can backup your app+data, sms, etc without root:

HTC Backup also does a surprisingly good job of backing everything up and restoring it after a reset.
I second the HTC Backup. Link it to Drive or Dropbox and let it do a full backup. When you are setting up the phone again, log back into HTC Backup and choose to restore a previous backup. It will re-install 98% of your apps and will restore lots of settings like wifi routers that you've saved and even restore your Sense homescreen, including widgets.
If i goto in recovery and restore my phone to defaults will i still be rooted? will all the bloat ware that i froze and remove stay how they are or will i have to do all that again? I really want to have a fresh start on my phone with root because i dont really use it for anything else so it would be nice to have a clean slate with only the things i need.
So to shorten up the question, is there a way to restore my phone to default and still be able to have or get root again?
I do have capabilites to back up user data incase that makes a difference in the answer.
Thanks you

I don't know enough about the towelroot exploit to say whether you will still have root after a wipe, but you will be able to root again. The only thing that stops towelroot from working is updating the OS past the build date in geo's thread (March 30th I think). As far as all your stuff, you'll have to freeze/remove it again.

so going through in recovery and restoring after i do backup of things like pictures etc. wont do anything drastic that could ruin the phone? Just might need to reroot?
