Hi everyone,
I've a problem with my SGS.
I was trying to install my first custom rom on the stock android 2.3.6 - CM10 following the WIKI.
After I've installed as suggested Heimdall, I've tried to install hardcore's ClockworkMod Recovery but once I've typed the command "heimdall flash --kernel zImage" in the terminal window the phone starts booting up again and again in an infinite loop.
How can i fix the problem?
Thanks for helping

Do you use sgs or sgs+ ?
because i know more things about the sgs+
maybe solution: turn out the battery and then if you can get into recovery mode, flash a cwm recovery zip and an ICS or JB rom
if it doesn't help report back
Greets
It is a SGS.
I've noticed that I can get into ClockworkMod recovery with the 3-buttons combo and i can navigate in the menu or wipe cache and so on.
Is it possible that my problem is due to an wrong firmware? Maybe i should use the multiCSC version?
Where can I find the cwm recovery zip?

Thanks everyone for help and hints!
I managed installing CM10 by reverting to stock firmware with Odin, then reflashing again CF with Odin and at the end installing latest CM10.1 successfully
The only thing I was missing in the first attempt was I haven't installed KIES on the pc (it is new) where i plugged the SGS (I thought that with heimdall i wasn't supposed to install kies) but in order to get Odin working i must install kies.
After kies installation, Odin successfully revert to stock firmware, than CF e than CM10.1

My SGS does not boot and does not enter recovery mode. I can enter download mode though. I suspect it happened after I removed some files from SD card.
Can I access SD card in download mode?
How can I use download mode to restore firmware and the recovery?
Thanks in advance.
u have to reflash your firmware. if u get only downloadmode working u can only reflash your device.
try a custom kernel first. if this wont work, then flash new firmware
Strange.from download mode you can only flash firmware.I think u can use adb and connect your phone to computer.try little search on topics don't rush first read carefully.

@malcho
adb wont work in download mode. only in cwm and after successful boot
So I understand I need to connect to PC in download mode and then use some software like ODIN to flash a ROM? Correct?
thats right.
may u can flash via kies, if u want a stock rom from samsung
I didn't know that info about adb. Thanks for info

Well, it's strange but looks better. Even before I did anything with ODIN the phone booted into the new ROM but I still cannot get into recovery. Seems like ROM installation procedure deleted something essential to run the recovery.
So now I have the download mode and Android working.
I am trying not to make any sudden moves so that I won't lose to ability to boot the ROM. What would be the best way to restore ClockworkMod recovery?
What ROM are you running now?
From a running stock-ROM the easiest way is to flash some custom kernel that includes CWM.
Here's a list http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966646
For 2.2.1-based ROM I prefer Speedmod.
For 2.3.3-based, choose your own
edit: There are some ROMs/kernels that can only enter recovery when USB-debugging is on.

I've just switched from Darky's 9.2 to PilotX with 2.6.35.7-I9000X[email protected]#Beta4.2_1 kernel.
From what you are saying I understand CWM recovery needs Linux kernel to run. I thought it's a stand alone boot-loader independent from the OS and kernel.
I installed CF-Root-XW_NEE_JVH-v3.2-CWM3RFS which comes with CWM recovery via ODIN with no effect. I still cannot reach recovery mode.
My phone came with 3e recovery which I downgraded to 2e (I don't remember how I did it then). Is it possible it has something to do with the problem?
You should always flash to stock when you have an issue.
You can also use Darky's resurrection (at least, part A: Pit with re-partition)
Then flash the original firmware (from samfirmware.com)
Thanks to everyone.
The problem was solved using http://www.v00d00.co.il/GBFINAL.pdf guide. Note, this guide is only relevant for Hebrew PilotX ROM.
Okay,
So i have searched, I was on 2.3.3 custom rom, and then i went on to flash Onecosmic's ICS Port Android 4.0.3 RC1, i flashed the kernel first and then from then on i cant go past flash screen. I tried flashing official firmware from here "I9000DXJV9_OLBJV9_DXJV9" but it wont go past flash screen. any help??? Can somebody link me to full official rom with bootloader and everything.??
register at sammobiles.com and find your firmware there, then flash it through ODIN. Then flash your KERNEL then any custom rom. If you find bootloop, you will need to flash a voodoo kernel this gives you other options in CWM to enable you to disable ALL lags. Then you should be fine. You can reflash any other kernel once your all done.

Ok i will try find out a vooddoo kernel, but if you please can link me to it, it will be very easier
Ok i flashed the voodoo kernel and from CWM i disabled the lagfix. And then again i i got the same error, "failed to mount /dbdata" after flashing through odin. And again back to bootloop.
What do i do.
Thankfully i can get into recovery menu. And i tried restoring nand backup but i got an error flashing boot image.
What's the next step
Try this. Remove BOTH external sd card and sim card. Boot to recovery, goto mounts/storage and format sdcard, back to recovery head menu, factory reset/wipe, format cache/format dalvik cache then remove battery, boot to doenload and flash rom agin with odin
Oh, and dont forget to disable ALL lagfixes BEFORE odin flash.
i had the same problem yesterday, what i did is i flashed through odin some 2.2 froyo (3 files) with repartition and the problem was solved; the rom was pre rooted JP3 ; hope it helps you

Hi, I used cm9.1 for a week but was disappointed with it's battery life, so i decided to try cm10 nightly. I did the CWM backup but after that i entered boot cycle and cannot boot to recovery now. Boot to download works fine, so what are my options now? Should i flash a stock rom and try flashing cm10 nigtly after that?
Edit: Managed to get recovery working but the recovery file itself doesn't work.
Try flashing Semaphore kernel for ICS via Odin, it may boot properly or it could get you to CWM, then you could flash a ROM... If not, download this http://d-h.st/4nP , it's pack of 3-file stock jw5 value pack, pit512, cf-root and Odin, flash it (if u know how), then just flash cm10 or cm9.1, your choice, there shouldn't be any problem
Thanks alot! Worked in the second attempt (the semaphore flashing)
I was upgrading from 9.0rc2 to 9.1 and encountered the same problem; could not get my phone into recovery mode, only download mode. Flashing Semaphore ICS 1.3.0 using Odin3 got my phone booting again without losing any data, settings or apps

I recently use my old GT-N7000 back (stock Android 4.0.4 ICS). I rooted the phone and installed CWM 6.0.1.4 via odin. After that i tried to flash KitKat ROM but failed - i found out that this was because of my CWM obsolete (based on ics) and incapable to flash KitKat ROM.
I tried to flash an updated recovery via odin but failed. Now i'm stuck with boot logo and only able to open recovery mode and download mode. I don't think this is eMMC bug (right?)
Is it the reason odin unable to flash new CWM is because my kernel is still based 4.0.4? and any other way for me to get out of this bootloop?

What "updated' vers of CWM r u referring to? CWM? TWRP? Phils?
All KK Roms need at least 6.0.4.5+ to flash. There's a sticky guide here that guides u step by step. Did you read this?

sorry for the late reply. My problem was solved (i found the guides and realised that i skipped one step - to flash a kernel which also comes with KK -compatible recovery)
thanks for the help :fingers-crossed:
Hi all..
My friend encountered this issue recently..
where the phone cannot be started and the firmware error appears.
I've tried several attemps on recovering it back.
1. it cannot go into stock recovery mode
2. it can go into download mode
so i've tried to flash thru odin:
1) philztouch custom recovery
2) stock rom jelly bean from sammobile.com
both attemps failed.
so my next move is to connect thru kies.
it failed again as it does not detect the device to do the emergency phone recovery.
so now im in the idea of trying to flash custom recovery again and a custom rom. do not know whether it works or not, but ill try.
any other solutions/ideas?
Thanks.
Where does the stock JB flash fail? Odin logs? Which version of philz kernel did you try to flash?

i cannot remember but it seems that when it comes to the "KERNEL" status appears in the odin box, it took a while n then fails.
PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT9-ORA-5.08.5.tar.md5
this is what i used to flash the philztouch.
any ideas?

If you cannot get the rom to flash.... You have to go through the philz kernel using odin.. Try to flash philz kernel xxlta version again using odin. Make sure you remove the battery for a couple of seconds. Then boot into odin mode. Use main USB ports and genuine USB cable.
