[Q] Poor HSPA speeds - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm getting very poor speeds on my HSPA network. I see the "H" on the screen, but it's not working as I would expect it. Speedtest shows me 58kbps download speeds and 1024kbps upload. What could be wrong? Upload is fine, but what's wrong with HSDPA? Any similar experiences? APN settings were downloaded from the network and I have rechecked them to be sure they're right...

Well,
It really looks that way. I tried with a SIM card from another provider and it worked fast.
The three networks in Mexico use 850/1900 bands for WCDMA, so it should work equally for all of them. What I find strange, is that the phone is mostly on "H", it only switches to "H+" sometimes during calls, and in that lapse the data connection works fine, however it falls back to "H" after a while...
So, now I have a more concrete question. Is there a way to configure the behaviour of how the phone connects to different 3G networks (UMTS/HSPA/HSDPA/HSUPA)? I remember that some HTC phones had some file that could be configured to modify some settings. Any thoughts on Motorola phones? Maybe if I can priorize HSDPA:09 or HSUPA:10 over HSPA:11... However it's just an idea...

I have the same issue here
Sent from my XT890 using xda app-developers app

OK,
Here's the solution, just found it a few minutes ago. I installed the brazilian retail ROM, but somehow, it's radio is not good for the mexican network. What I did:
1. Make sure you have Motorola Device Manager installed (drivers)
2. Have fastboot.exe on your PC, if you don't have it, google it.
3. Download another ROM, in my case, I used this one: CFC_8.7.1I-110_IFW-39_S7_UCASMI01E1017.0R_USASMIICSRTGB_P042_A005_S1FF_fb.xml
4. Get the file radio_signed from the archive and put it in the same directory where you have fastboot.exe
5. Connect the phone to your PC and run "fastboot devices" from command line. You should now see your phone listed.
6. If step 5 worked, run "fastboot flash radio radio_signed"
7. It will take 1-2 minutes, after that run "fastboot reboot"
Now, I am on the Iusacell network in Mexico and have gotten excellent results with the Retail Brazilian firmware + GB retail radio. I am not sure if the radio I flashed is the ideal for your network, but you could search for different ROMs on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933308 to find one that has a proper radio for your phone.
Note: I did not unlock the bootloader for this step, neither did I loose any data. However, as this is in some way a "hack", it's under your responibility...
Regards

In need of instruction...

To give a back story on what I'm trying to accomplish, I'll explain my situation.
I work for Bell, in a retail store, the main reason I came to these forums was to find a way to re-flash phones in store to avoid having to doa what little stock we have of the phones. One of my colleagues from another location told me about the new update from Kies locking phones up at a ridiculous rate of 25%, so I'm trying to be pro-active about it.
Once I got in, I got a bit carried away with 2.2 software and what not. Now, i'm no expert, but I'm computer literate and made sense of most of the process, some extra guidance would be nice though.
Playing with the phones we have in store, I was able to flash every available software I could find on said phones, however a constant issue is found. I can not get a solid data connection. If I disable data, everything works fine, soon as I turn it back on, nothing happens.
Furthermore, I followed a thread regarding re-flashing everything back to Bell's stock settings and it didn't help me along at all.
I have done some searches, but i'm coming up dry. I know you've probably heard this hundreds of times and I'm sorry for being new to the process, some guidance towards this all would be great.

Can you elaborate more on this?
what do you mean by unable to get a solid data connection?
what kind of data connection are you referring to?
USB cable between phone to PC?
or Wifi data
or APN (3G) data?

not sure where you got that number from, but it's not that accurate
the reason for the ridiculous high amount of returned phones is due the Internal SD card problem that was found.
even under normal conditions if it gets formatted a lot or used a lot it seems to die faster than its Europe counterpart.
apparently on the Canadian version of the I9000 they use a bad batch of Flash Disk for the storage memory
there is a sticky Topic Poll about it.
it is NOT the ROM flash from Kies that are killing the units, just anything software that constantly access the internal SD can produce the same effect.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793404
the rest of the returns you guys at Bell are seeing are due this other problem discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775017
it can be reproduced, but you need the ideal conditions to do it.
it has to do with signal quality and tower availability

I'm referring to 3G connection. I have set up the APN, even tried different settings, all producing the same results.
In regards to your second reply, the phones I've seen at this location for DOA's have mostly because of a failure to fully turn on, the display won't show. I've experienced similar issues when a flash doesn't work properly, a re-flash fixes it. We started seeing this issue after samsung released the update. However, I'm not going to flash a customers phone to have them lose 3G connectivity, or open up other issues.
Basically, I'm looking for two things. Primarily a way to re-flash everything to work as if it were out of box, with the latest software update. Secondly, to be able to get a stable 3G connection on 2.2, everything else seems to work fine at this point.
i'm not even going to touch the 2.2 topic as it's not even released officially.
the current stable official flash is JH2, on JH2 3G should work properly (stable), another thing you can do is to go into the service menu using the secret codes (wiki) and make sure the proper 3G bands are selected for WCDMA
1900 and 850 should both have a start next to it
next check is the *#0011* to see if the towers keeps constantly changing
that's another reason for unstable 3G if the phone keeps jumping towers every few seconds
this is also related to the 2nd link i mentioned about people getting Comatose Syndrome on the phones, which locks up the phone, and they have to reset the phone to get the phone to work again.
I'm running JH2 currently, I ran *#2263# 850 and 1900 are available. Also, ran *#0011# both are available, ran a test on youtube it worked for 5 minutes.
Any ideas?
**Edit**
I lied, on the *#0011# it only shows 1900.

Get something straight
the update samsung released was JH2, and it is not causing the problems you've seen.
the problems with the symptoms described are after they were flashed by the Alpha & Beta versions of Froyos 2.2, which many of them do end up losing the 850 band, the band issue can be fixed with much work.
there have been at least 4 different leaks of froyo, each one bringing its own volume of chaos and bugs, the most dangerous 2 are JPH and JPK, one loses the IMEI / ESN number ID, the other one kills the internal SD

Since the I9000M and I9000 are hardware based bands, you should always have the 850 and 1900 bands for 3G
Many who have tried Froyo and back had come across the problem of losing the 850 band, mainly because the Froyo leaks were intended for the Korea test team running international I9000 devices
some times just by flashing the Firmware back to stock or Froyo betas doesn't actually activates the 850 band, even though it shows as selected in the Service Menue
if you go back to the Band Selection screen of the Service Menue, you should choose bands that are knowingly not available in canada, like say band 900 for example, and then go back again to the service menu, and band selection to only choose 850
once you can confirm 850 works, then you can select 1900 as well, and now both of the bands should be active permanently until some body else screws it up again.
using *#0011# and trying to call the voice mail are the fastest way to verify for line and for 3G on 850
you can also try the app speedtest from speedtest.net

[Q] no 4g or lte on stock or custom rom

So I've had this phone for almost a week now and I used to he able to get 4g LTE. But ever since I rooted it, I no longer get more than 3g. I now have bananacakes Holiraider 1.6 but I still don't get any higher than 3g. So my question is how do I get 4g and 4g lte. Oh and if anyone is using that custom Rom, is it possible to get faster than 1512? In his thread it shows you can clock it to 1566. Thanks a bunch I'm kinda new to this!
try dialing *#*#4636#*#* and see what your modem is set to, it should be GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto
you also may have an APN issue, verifiy that your APN is correct, perhaps contact your carrier for the correct APN settings for you phone and plan.
Well I'm now running a custom ROM. The apn is the same as other users and it does say the above. And yes I am in a 4G LTE area
Sent from my HTC Raider X710e using XDA App
Try doing the above and change to LTE only.
Then once you have 4G change it back. It should stay on 4G. I had to do this to get 4G on official rom.
Ok I just tried that but it wouldn't let me to switch it to LTE only. When I did, it switched it back to GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto. I'm just gonna relock my phone and set it back to the original stock rom and format my phone (yes I have the apps and stuff backed up). Because my actual mobile connection fluctuates on and off as well
the phone should be locked into the GSM/WCDMA/LTE setting. If you try to change it from that setting it just returns back. The phone will get instructions from the carrier's base station to tell it whether to be on LTE or just 4G/3G. Using *#*#4636#*#* under phone information, what is listed as the Network type?

It is locked in GSM/WCDM/LTE auto.
above that option it should tell you the network type. it is about half way between the "run ping test" button and the "Set Preferred Network type" option. Need to know what it says there.
Oh ok I see what you mean, it says HSDPA
make sure that you are in a active LTE area. toggle the radio off and on. the network type should change to LTE if it is available. remember that if you make a phone call your phone will drop back to just 4g/3g and it might take a second for it to switch back to LTE.
I live in Los Angeles so I'm like in the center of the LTE center in Southern California. But for some reason my phone won't get anything higher than 3G, and my actual cellphone reception toggles on and off randomly too.
It worked before. For the first 3 days atleast. And now all of the sudden it wouldn't work, so I rooted it and installed a custom ROM
Try one of WildChilds custom ROMS. LTE works on both and they're tailored to US users.

if the problem arised before you rooted and rom'd the phone I doubt the rom is the problem. there is always the chance that you have a bad radio.

That's what I'm thinking... What would I do about this?
i would verify your sim with another 4gLTE phone and vice versa.
Hrm... So it could be a Sim card problem eh? Unfortunately there are no other LTE devices for me to get a hold of... Would this be the only way?
it could be. i hope you have pulled battery/sim and then rebooted already. you can verify your phone with a known good sim and verify your sim with a known good phone. I would try your local at&t store. they might be able to help.

Droid 3 In Australia

Hey, I'm in Australia (GSM) and I purchased a Motorola Droid 3 (XT862) from America a few months ago.
Should I have bought the XT860 (GSM version)?
I was with Optus but because they don't support the 850mhz network I switched to Vodafone because they had it. So now I atleast have data working on my phone after those months of not having it, but vodafone sucks, especially on this phone (text messages sometimes don't send/signal cuts out all the time) but the 3G is very good.
The phone I previously had before the Droid 3 was a HTC Tmobile G2 which I had also bought from America, and everything worked perfectly.
If I buy the XT860 will it fix everything?
On the Motorola website it says the XT862 and XT860 have the same networks... but the XT680 is supposed to be used on GSM, so would it work fine?
Sorry if I confused anyone, I'm really baked.
Thanks in advance for anyone trying to help
Maybe you could try the T-MOBILE AT&T hack?
Sent from my XT862 using XDA
i have XT 862, on GSM and it works perfectly. More than that, I use also vodafone
The xt860 (and xt883) would not be any better; all they (along with the xt862) support UTMS 850/1900/2100mHz. Thus, you probably didn't get a lot of 3G on the Optus network (which uses 900/2100mHz). The main Vodafone 3G network in Aus is 900/2100mHz, but they are in the process of rolling out an 850mHz network.
Telstra Next-G uses 850mHz (and they have 2100mHz as well, but only in cities I believe)
Anyway, in brief: If you're willing to switch to Telstra, you should get great results. If not, Vodafone is the next best option.
I have xt862 on optus in Austraia. I just stay in global mode. I did experiment around with some of the custom roms but found weirdnesses like my calls not coming thru. I went back to stock and now im going to stay on stock until cm9 reaches release. Im not having any issues on stock.
Hope this helps

Just did it, I suppose it improved the situation a tiny bit, but i'm not sure.
I will do some tests on the Telstra network, see if it's better than Vodafone.
Im using the phone in Global mode atm and I'm getting a decent 3-4 bars instead of the 1 or 2 i'd normally get which excites me
And the network type is displaying HSPA.
But I cannot send text messages, everytime, it just says "Text message not sent" which is very annoying. Anyone know anything about this? When I swapped over to Vodafone from Optus I could send texts but after a point it just stopped working...
Anyone know anything about this?
thanks
So does the droid 3 bought from usa connect to data services with optus at all?
How fast is data transfer in "global" mode?
late reply i know, but I'm on TPG [Optus network] in Qld, Aus with the droid 3 XT862.
from memory, all i've done is done the 'hack' to show actual reception, rather than 1 bar. I run the phone on the global setting.
I just ran a speedtest.net check, got an internode server in Sydney. ping 139ms, DL 5241kbps, UL 1202kbps.
OP, when you were with Optus, did you go through your account settings and make sure you had 3G data turned on for your phone, etc? I'm not trying to patronise or anything, but it always helps to start with the basics when fault finding.

Hi All,
Im also in Australia, with Vodafone, and am looking at getting myself a Droid 3 as well.
Since the phones aren't released here, what happens about software updates? Im assuming they won't happen via OTA?
Im leaning towards the XT860, rather than the XT862, any particular reason to go for either?
Thanks,

No difference between them but the xt860 has more dedicated roms here. Both are the same phone and just build.prop edits are needed to get the phones up and running in 5 mins. OTA updates will still work anywhere tho if you root and mod your phone don't use use the OTA feature as you will screw your phone.
All you need to do select wcdma/gsm mode and manually put in your service provider APNs to get 3G. Find this on the Voda site.
Best place to find your APN is here:

I managed to get a xt862, but I cant get data working on optus? (live connected)
calls/text works - tried global mode, tried GSM/UMTS mode, tried manually selecting optus 3g network, made sure the data setting was enabled which is actually under "battery & data manager". Already manually input the optus apn.
what am I missing?
Do you have to do the tmobile at&t hack? running everything stock from factory; or will rooting the phone/install ics help?
I have the one bar reception bug which I read on another thread if that makes a difference.
nvm, got it to work, for some reason manually inputting an APN didnt work, had to find the optus site and send it via sms.
Speed isnt too bad.

[Q] Want to use Droid 3 on Straight Talk

I followed the instructions on the first post of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406812 but I'm not sure if it has worked or not. Would like to know before trying to activate the phone. I would post on that forum, but because I'm a n00b, it won't let me.
Here is what I have done:

Got SIM from Straight Talk and unlock code from Unlock Fusion on eBay. No problems there.
4 - Download the following files and unzip it to your desktop: http://www.mediafire.com/?y1wjw775v8itsx3
5 - Click Start and open cmd.
6 - Type in the following in cmd:
'cd desktop'
'cd fastboot'
'moto-fastboot flash radio radio.img'
ONCE it flashes, then enter:
'moto-fastboot reboot'

Took me a while to realize I had to be in AP Fastboot mode to make this work! Saw the box and android icon with progress bar, so I think this worked.
7 - Use root explorer to push the build.prop into the system folder
8 - Reboot, select GSM/UMTS in Network Settings.

Did both of these, also set APN settings per ST instructions.
Problem is that I have no service still. Shows grey bars with red crossed circle. I'm hesitant to activate the phone as I think I should be able to see bars even without activation. Or is it normal not to until activation?

I have the phone set to GSM/UMTS, but have also tried Global as someone on that thread suggested that might work if GSM doesn't. I specified an unlocked phone when I ordered and got a SIM that was for Unlocked or AT&T.
I guess the real question is, am I supposed to get service bars before activating the phone? I haven't purchased the activation for it yet. However, I think I should be able to dial 611, but it says no network is available.
I tried re-flashing the radio several times and copying build.prop from the zip file into the /system folder. Still getting the no signal icon. Once I got a gray box with a red plus inside, but on reboot it was gone and the no signal icon was back. Shouldn't I get signal even though my phone has not been activated?

I changed it back to the stock build.prop. No signal. Then changed it back to the build.prop that came in the zip file. Still no signal.
I guess what I'm going to have to do is do a factory restore and start all over again.
I wiped all user data and started over. Performed all the steps again, except I didn't have to unlock the phone. Still no service. See attached picture for what I get.
I have gone through the steps several more times, tried a different order (SBF, flash radio, root, build.prop), tried 2 other build.prop files posted on that thread, and even tried a different program to root the phone (motofail-gb). Same results.

Here's a picture of the phone info. Looks like everything is correct. Any idea what I might be doing wrong???
So I'm trying to configure my Droid 3 for net10, and I keep getting stuck at step 6. I enter everything into the terminal and it says "waiting for device." I did some reading and tried "motofastboot -i 0xfce flash radio radio.img" and still get the same result. Is there something I missed? I have root. I haven't changed the ROM so I don't think I would need to reflash with step 1. I got the unlock code from Verizon and after I installed the net10 sim and entered the code it said "unlock successful." I've tried it both with the phone turned on like normal and hold M+power and selected AP Fastboot and neither seems to work
*update* I reinstalled the drivers and the flash was successful. I copied over build.prop into the system folder (overwrote the original) and now I'm stuck with no signal. Added the APN exactly as it is in my wife's phone (which is active on net10) and nothing. Where should I go from here?

SIM is unlocked. When I search for networks, it finds ATT 2G and 3G and Tmobile 2G but won't connect to any of them. I'm reading through the 48 pages of the other thread looking for info. I'm thinking of trying the XT883 stuff outlined on page 18

You HAVE to use the XT883 radio and build.prop, the stock XT862 radio will not work on US GSM networks, Verizon had blocks put in the radio firmware to prevent it from being used on competing networks (such as AT&T). I use the D3 on Straight Talk with an AT&T compat sim, if you need help with the XT883 stuff, let me know.

I first tried the build.prop from the guide, then the RWALEY v3 found here. What would you like screen shots of?

Also, is the SIM already activated? Else it will NOT be accepted onto the network (it'll show signal strength under 'status' but no bars) it only shows signal bars if registered on the network. Since it 'sees' AT&T and T-Mobile (when you scan networks) I do not think it's a phone/radio problem.

Borrowed my wife's active SIM and everything works. Currently -81dBm. I hadn't activated mine yet because I didn't want to port my number and be without a phone if this didn't work

Awesome, so when you decide to activate your sim, it should work fine! Good to hear, also I suggest (if you followed the instructions for data) remove the 'proxy' field. It actually blocks a few apps and whatnot and try to keep data usage around 1~1.5GBs a month. Else you'll get throttled or possibly cut off.

The APN I used for her (and now me) I actually had to piece together from three different ones I found. I don't know why net10 would change what they're telling people to use, but until I set it up like this, it wouldn't send or receive MMS. The current ATT APN on their website doesn't work at all for me. This is what I ended up with that works great
Name: net10
APN: wap.tracfone
Proxy: NA
Port :80
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com (lead by http but new members can't post that)
MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.32
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: PAP
APN Type: default,mms,supl

[Q] htc first 3G not working

H!, I have a HTC First AT&T factory unlocked, bought from US. I'm in Bangalore, India now and the phone worked great for the first month. lately it does not work for call, sms, data when in "GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto" mode (the signal bars just disappear and the phone goes out of reach). It works if i change network type to "GSM only" (in this setting i get call, sms and Edge). And the network type does not have the option "GSM/WCDMA auto". I tried all other options in the network type selection and it works ONLY in "GSM only" mode. Please help me solve this issue. In any of the case above, WiFi works fine.
NOTE: The phone is S-off and locked (can be unlocked easily), in an attempt to solve the same issue.
htc first
Buddy, similar situation like u. from bhubaneshwar , i ordered from us ebay.com. every time i insert reliance sim it shows me airtel sim and before doing custom rom i cant connect even mobile data. now i am on jmzbestsense all working good excep wifi and blutooth. i will fix it soon.but after custom rom also it showing airtel instead of reliance but all good. my phone's network vanishes at some time interval for 5 or 6 seconds , does your too.
GSM mode is a sim card. WCDMA is the type of network that a carrier like Sprint or Verizon uses here in the US. I don't believe the First supports WCDMA technology.
Sent from my HTC first using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hmmm. WCDMA is an integrated data technology that works with GSM with part of the technology borrowed from CDMA. So most of the smart phones with 3G data capability will have GSM/WCDMA auto selection. Here the WCDMA is for either HSDPA or HSDPA+. If a phone is capable of LTE, then the options will be GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto selection. Well this selection is where I think my phone is goofed up. I vaguely remember playing with the data settings through "Battery Doctor" app just before it went for a toss.
@anilhotblood, yes if I select the "GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto" option my signal bars vanish but not for few seconds, it vanishes once and for all . as of now I'm using it with GSM only option with EDGE only (very slow data) .

Can't you select GSM/WCDMA auto?
Or the equivalent is WCDMA preferred.
"GSM/WCDMA Auto" option is not listed in this phone.
