can someone assist me plesse - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

Hi,
Im currently on ripper rom and want to chane back to wamanlite.
I understand I can do this using cwm recovery but do I need to clear any cache or data whilst doing it.
Cheers

Unless stated otheriwise by the developer I'd always wipe cache and dalvik while flashing a new ROM. This is normally
required and can be obmitted sometimes, but only when upgrading from an older ROM to a newer version of the same ROM.
HTH

almost certainly the ROM installation process will wipe cache and dalvik cache.
clearing data is a different thing, I always do it when changing ROMs just because I like to start fresh, but it's not always necessary. Always a good idea to backup first if you're going to attempt changing ROMs no matter what you do with regards to wiping partitions.

When changing between roms or upgrading to roms that are on a different base, you should always do a nandroid backup first and then do a full wipe / factory reset before flashing the new / other rom.

yuhp i currently run odin mobile so i just slam a titanium pro backup back real fast like then reboot via recovery, wipe dalvik and factory reset, the flash. once ur back in restore titanium and resync google and inabout 15-20 min you can be back to were ur were on your old version or rom and enjoying ur new one a hell of a lot faster,
btw another good tool for rom swapperes is nova launcher. especially if u have a lot of apps. because u can save ur exact layout to the cloud and refresh in less than 2 min, along with all of you personal settings and what not.

[Q] Cyanogenmod 6 stuck in boot animation need help

Just rooted my phone and decided to flash cyanogen 6. I'm pretty new with this whole process but my droid1 has been cycling through the boot animation for a few hours I've unplugged and plugged back in the battery once and it's still taking forever. Kind off freaking out here any help would b amazing love the phone and love wat u developers have done with it thanks a bunch
Thread moved in Motorola Droid and Milestone General.
Did you wipe data and clear the cache in recovery before flashing the ROM? If not, go into recovery and wipe it all now. Then a reboot, and you should be gold.
awesome thanks i just wasnt sure that was needed for a new rom. that will wipe all my apps right?
Sometimes it is needed sometimes not. Yeah it will wipe all of your apps so be sure you have the API files for anything you didn't download from the market. A saved list of all the apps you have will come in quite handy sometimes. Got mine written in my pharmacology notebook.
Don't just write em down. Get titanium backup. Its a lifesaver. Backs up everything from apps, txt/SMS, emails, settings, bookmarks, calander entries. You name it. So when u wipe you can restore everything in about 90 seconds.
Also should have done a nandroid before flashing cm6. While flashing a new rom, or trying to flash back to stock. Wipe and then try it. But first try this. Download the CM6 version again and check md5sum, add to SD, wipe cache, and dalvik cache in recovery n try it again.
Oh and if your like me. I hate when I forget how my pages looked & what icons were where. I use drocap to take Screenshots so I can put it back how it was before. Good luck and welcome to CM. The best android rom around

Full wipe rom?

Noob questions. Every time I flash a new rom I become narotic, and I first disable any lagfix, then go to cwm, and factory reset, cache, dalvik, and batt stats all wiped. I'm assuming I don't need to do this if it's a full wipe rom? Can I even skip the lagfix part or is that always necessary?
Also if I'm upgrading a version of a rom, ex, apex 6.4 to 6.5 or any other situation same as this, can I just flash it without doing any prep before hand?

if it's a full wipe ROM than yes, the ROM does all the wiping for you. And if the OP states for you to disable lagfix before flashing than i do so.. also if your just doing an update you can usually just flash over one another. But its always good to check with the ROM dev and see if he suggests any special wipes or whatnot.

You can still do whatever your used to and are comfortable with. BUT this is what I do before flashing any rom.
I go to market and make sure all apps are updated.
Next I go to titanium backup and backup all user apps and system apps with data (I NEVER RESTORE THE SYSTEM APPS OR DATA THOUGH)
Next I boot into recovery and perform a backup (which saves almost Evey aspect of my rom I am on before flashing
I boot back up and then reboot into recovery again.
Then I install whatever rom I am flashing at the time.
I DO NOT WIPE ANYTHING OTHER THAN CACHE WHILE IN RECOVERY AND BEFORE FLASHING THE ROM.
I have NOT had more than 1-2 issues flashing anything since I started using froyo, so that includes any froyo rom, the gingerbread rom that first was made, then Continuum and on my second cappy the same except I also have flashed CM7 on it.
The one or two times I had issues ALL I ever did was boot into recovery and run restore from the previous rom I was on. Then reflash the rom I was trying to get on to. I really have have had NO ISSUES NOT wiping anything other than cache.
I look at it this way, if it works the first time I flash a rom I am golden and do not need to reset up everything. If I have a issue then I CAN start from scratch with a factory reset and wipe cache and dalvich cache IF NEED BE. At least then I am ON the rom I was trying g to go on in the first place.
Then after all seems good I will restore my user apps and some user apps with data with Titanium Backup. So MOST of the time I have changed roms and all is working with no issues in 10 to 15 minutes.
Again this is HOW AND WHY I do it that way. A NANDROID BACKUP and TITANIUM BACKUP are your BEST FRIENDS in these cases.

6.5 is a wipe version which would take care of wiping caches. You dont need to disable lagfix. But as someone said always keep a nandroid backup
Also you may want to post these queries in ROM thread for quicker response
I always disable lagfixes just for good measure. Most roms do a full wipe so there's no need for any of the other stuff.

[Q] updating a rom quick question

I have an lg optimus 2x and when i want to update the rom i just go into CWM flash the new rom, flash custom kernel and reboot and am good to go.
It does not seem like it for the touchpad? are there any roms that are similar to this, im asking because I dont want to reinstall all my apps everytime I upgrade a rom. especially since ICS updates are moving so quickly.
thanks

I use the unofficial nightlies. All I do is wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and install.
You could also use titanium backup to restore your apps if you've done a wipe delete factory reset. Also, in cwm, you could try advanced restore > restore data.

For every Android device...if you are updating the different version of same rom, you dont need to wipe (unless Dev specify it). If you are flashing different rom, then you should wipe cache, dalvik cache atleast....better if you can factory reset to avoid random FC issue....
Its similar in touchpad...once you have android (CWM and mobbot) installed, you just wipe cache and dalvik cache for different version of same rom...and along with that factory reset if you are flashing new rom....
Titanium backup and my backup pro are very good apps to restore your apps in minutes.....
Thanks for the clarification guys
Also is there a way to get usb mode with CM9?? i cant seem to find a way to transfer files over to the touchpad via usb

Go to the storage tab in settings, click the menu button , 3 dots in top right hand corner click USB computer connection then tick the option for MTB, and your done .
Don't know who first discovered this method of restoring apps/user data, but you could go into CWM...backups and restore...advanced restore...select rom containing user data you wish to restore....select restore data....reboot.
A whole lot simpler (in my opinion) than using titanium backup for multiple app restore.

[Q] Steps to restore backup file using cwm recovery

Hi guys,
I believe this question has been asked multiple times, and i myself tried searching for answers from many various source to clarify my doubts, only to get more confused due to conflicting information.
Let's say now i am on a custom ROM. Before flashing the custom ROM, i made a backup of my stock touchwiz rom using cwm. However i want to revert back to the exact same state before flashing the custom ROM. What are the steps i need to do to restore the backup file?
1) Some sources mentioned just booting into cwm recovery, selecting "backup and restore" option, select "restore" and choosing the desired backup file will allow the phone to restore to the state prior to flashing.
2) Some other sources mentioned needing to wipe cache/wipe delvik cache/format system/format cache etc. first before i can restore the backup file.
So which is it?
Thank you!
Personally, I always choose option 2 if going to another rom. If restoring an earlier backup within the same rom i use option 1.
Don't know excact what the right thing to do is, but it never hurt to wipe cache / dalvik cache / system because you have it all backed up anyway. At least if you backup regulary. I back up regulary and delete the backups i don't want.

Thanks for the tip!
Is wiping cache/delvik cache sufficient in most cases?
Cos i saw a youtube video, where the guy did not wipe cache/delvik cache. instead, he formatted cache, data and system.

Any other things i should look out for or preventive measures i should take for restoring backup from cwm?
i have been reading of cases where restoration through cwm fails and they have to go through the whole process of re-rooting and flashing before being able to restore it
there is no need for wiping, the recovery does it on its own prior to restoring.
got stuck
i erased everything followed 2nd step now its stuck on logo not starting

Phone sudden brick

I have been using Alliance Rom for about 3-4 months and there has been no problems so far.Last night i was browsing the internet and all of a sudden it restart and got stuck at the Gt-N7000 screen.Tried restarting the phone and rebooting it from recovery but failed. Is there a way to flash alliance rom again and still get my data back or do i have to wipe everything and flash alliance again?
My phone was bricked

If you flash alliance ROM again, without a wipe, the data will stay intact. And if you can enter recovery, the phone isn't in a brick for sure. In this case you can even take a nandroid backup and i advise you to do so ( take a backup in the backup and restore in recovery). Try flashing alliance again or else copy the data to your computer, I'm sure the phone is detected on the PC isn't it?!
I can enter recovery but do i have to wipe data before flashing alliance again?

Make a nandroid backup, wipe, flash rom again and after that you can restore apps and data from nandroid backup using Titanium Backup or other app with this functionality.
No, u can skip wiping data as you're reflashing the same ROM that you're currently running. But you ideally should wipe data for smooth functioning of the ROM, so you can also get a nandroid backup as i said and then restore the backup apps with titanium. Anyway just reflash the ROM without a wipe and it should work fine. Do check the alliance thread if they recommend a data wipe while installing the ROM everytime.

Do i have to do any formatting?
No formatting nothing whatsoever. There's never a need to format before flashing ROMs.

What i meant was formatting the preload, system and other stuff.Must i do that?
No need. Visit the thread on the Alliance ROM once and confirm
Actually u don't have to flash a new rom again if u have a sudden shut down n this is quite common nowadays
just simply go to recovery n do a backup if u afraid of losing ur data... after backup check is it successful backup
n then do a factory reset wait for 5 to 10mins once able to start up completely then go to recovery again n restore backup
choose advance restore n there will have some option !choose restore data will do..
once u get used to it there's nothing difficult.. i'll suggest not to do any previous data restore n those
corrupted data will bring back the bootloop issue...

Well after i backup my data,i reboot recovery and check if it was a successfull backup.Fortunately it was.I factory reset my phone and switch it off immediately after it was done. The next day when i switch on my phone, the bootloop was gone!Waited for it to finish loading and once it booted up,i realised all my data was still there(my wodgets and apps)(Its a good thing for me).Its so weird because i remembered doing a factory reset the day before.Any idea what happened or how?

Sudden shut down most probably caused by high usage of RAM.
Bootloop might caused by maybe a 1yr old battery or different kernal, oc/uv n system task killer, flashing different rom
with backup n restore.
if u flash all the different developer's ROM in XDA n do a restore data u'll get ur answer "bootloop"
u can find philz fix bootloop but that's not really a solution.
try to uninstall unused app n unused system app to relase some RAM for heavy user.
when u flash different ROM try not restore backup data.
i don't think i can help much cuz we don't use the same ROM.
if u think ur ROM or Data still got issues u can test it by pulling out the battery during screen on.
pls don't try becuz i believe ur ROM n data not clean enough to take this action!
