Hello XDA members this is my first post on the XDA forums. I am about to upgrade to a droid bionic from my droid x. I am able to use the verizon hotspot app threw teamblackhats hotspot hack without verizon knowing I am using my phone as a hotspot. I have searched around all the android/bionic forums for the past week and have been searching for a way to use a hotspot app that has infrastructure mode working on the bionic and the only one I have found is the built in verizon hotspot. However verizon can still detect that you are using hotspot even if you do the SQllite entitlement hack. So does anyone know of an app/hotspot trick that lets you use your phone as a hotspot with infrastructure mode without the verizon hotspot or verizon knowing? If you give me "Foxfi" or "Wifi Tether For Root Users" as an answer can you please tell me if those apps can use infrastructure mode and bypass the Network Access identifier switch that verizon has built into their LTE phones??
I have emailed both Foxfi developers and Wifi tether for root users developers however I have still not received a response and it has been 2 weeks since I have asked them.
Here is a thread that can give you an idea of what I am talking about http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1260968 post #12 on page 2.
By the way I already know there are apps out there that can use wifi threw bluetooth and adhoc mode, but I need infrastructure mode and that's why I have included the information that I did in this post.

Quick question. How much data are you using that you're paranoid about Verizon finding out about the NAI switcher?
Because if you're not going to be doing it too heavily, I've used Wireless Tether For Root Users (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether) for 3 years across a Droid, Droid Bionic, and SGS3 without any issues whatsoever from Verizon. It uses a legit infrastructure mode.
However, there's no such thing as a safe tether workaround if Verizon ever decides to do deep packet detection on you. They'll be able to see desktop browser user-agent strings and that will blow your whole cover immediately.

I'll say i will be using 7-10 gigs of data per month. I have unlimited data grandfathered in and I have been out of contract with verizon for the past 2 months. I appreciate the info about wifi tether for root users. Please tell me projektor which setup method is infrastructure mode in wifi tether? its hostapd(master) right?
Bummer i was hoping there was a way to make it undetectable.

Hmmm. What if, though, the tethering is to an Android tablet?

I heard bluetooth tethering works with pdanet. Try usb tethering on pdanet as well? theres a lot of variables. Sorry i dont have ur tablet to test it out
oops. I was unclear. I meant would they be able to read browser headers and notice a difference if I had my Android tablet tethered to my Android phone? (I've always assumed yes, but it made me wonder - if the browser headers were identical, would then notice the difference without actually delving deeper)?
I know I can tether my Infinity to my BIONIC, because I do it on a (nearly) daily basis. So, I was just asking the question more as an academic question than anything else.

from my understanding yes they can tell. i believe the mac address used on the tethered device is somehow revealed to vzw.

So I'm running a rom (Cognition) which enabled tethering and mobile AP.... but I haven't tried using them yet... does anyone know if there's any way for AT&T to see that I'm using tethering without a tethering plan, and bill me for it? I heard about iphone owners using jailbreak tether getting texts from AT&T telling them to buy a tethering plan... does anyone know if on Android they're able to do the same thing?

i doubt it .. but to be sure we would need a pay to inspect packets .
No, at&t cannot tell the difference of packets being passed on their network.
No carrier has that capability. The amount of resources needed to monitor packets in a way that is effective, at an effective rate, is basically not cost effective at this point.
The tethering notices are completely based off of data usage. It's been determined that most carriers take notice of you if you exceed 5gb. So if you manage to use over 5gb of data without tethering, you could very well receive one of these texts.
With that said, they can see packet routes. So if your already being watched, and are tethering, and happen to be using it for say...pirating, it could lead to further action. I've only heard one case of this, but still worth noting.
Also, contract prevents at&t, or any carrier for that matter, from adding tethering to your bill. Their work around for that is that if you exceed a data limit, or a fair use limit, they can and will charge you for that.
I tether causally; causally being non-data heavy lurking. I've owned a blackberry bold 9000, an iphone 3g, and now my captivate...all were made tether capable. All were used for tethering. None had received a notice.
Hope this is helps!
tl;dr- no, at&t can't tell if you're tethering.

If you download gigs and gigs because you use your phone as your primary internet they'll get on your case.
they do break your contract if they add tethering charges. You can end it without an early termination penalty within 30 days.

KritikSS nailed it spot on. Some anecdotal evidence, but I've been lightly tethering (usually less than 1GB/month) for years now and haven't heard anything.
i think the kb1 and jj4 roms have a way to inform att if you are tethering but should not be an issue if you are using a custom rom sepecially if the rom is a port.

Yes, this is what I was worried about... I know that actual deep packet inspection is unlikely (and could be defeated with vpn), but it doesn't help if there's actually a 'phone-home' mechanism telling them you're tethering. My understanding was that this is what's going on with the iphones, though I could be wrong.
I'm running cognition, which is a kb1 based rom... should I be worried?
As far as a "phone-home" system, the only notification of tethering that would be sent to at&t would be by their own tethering app on the phone. If you happen to flash another ROM, as you've stated that you've already done so, this app should no longer be on your phone and functioning, thus unable to "phone-home."
And even then, that app wont allow tethering until it receives notice from at&t that you've purchased the package needed to do so.
Simply put, just use an app such as "wireless tether" to do your tethering and you'll be completely fine.
I would like to bring this back from the dead. AT&T KNOWS! They sent me a text that stated something like: from your recent activity you will be upgraded to the tethering plan..... I believe it referenced tether specifically though
If I got that text, I would call and say they violated the contact and end the contract.
They cannot alter the contract without you agreeing to the terms.

Wrong. From the TOS:
AT&T data plans are designed for use with only one of the following distinct device types: (1) Smartphones, (2) basic and Quick Messaging phones, (3) tablets, and (4) LaptopConnect cards, and (5) stand-alone Mobile Hotspot devices. A data plan designated for one type of device may not be used with another type of device. For example, a data plan designated for use with a basic phone or a Smartphone may not be used with a LaptopConnect card, tablet, or stand-alone Mobile Hotspot device, by tethering devices together, by SIM card transfer, or any other means. A data tethering plan, however, may be purchased for an additional fee to enable tethering on a compatible device. An Activation Fee may apply for each data line.

This has been rehashed many times. The no unauthorized tethering has been in the TOS for years.

Okay, the droid 3 has been given a hack to allow tethering without verizon tracking it. It involves radiocomm and works great. I would tend to believe that the same thing would work for the Bionic so long as the version of RadioComm supports the specific chipset that the bionic runs.
Here is the d3 link: Droid 3 THB inspired free wireless tether
this is like the 3rd or 4th post on this subject...
as far as I know, nobody has been able to get this to work.
just a matter of time... there is a way to get ad-hoc working... but I have not seen that verified yet either.
I have a non rooted stock ROM, is there any hotspot wifi app available for the TBolt ?
I had the Samsung Droid Charge and I found an app from SVTP that allowed hotspot without Verizon charges.

Or THIS
Those are for Tethering, not WiFi Hotspot, but thanks anyway.

Well you do realize that tethering will also allow you to use your device's connection through a PC or laptop, right?
Similar concept, just uses USB instead of wifi.
Anyway, here is a WIFI APP (no root needed)
Can't verizon bust you for this?, I'm not trying to do the "holier than thou" thing, because I am interested in this...Just was wondering...I know at&t started nailing people for it.

I believe the running concensus is that yes, they can bust you. Possibly by sending you a bill and/or enrolling you in the wifi tether plan. I'm sure they could legally void your contract and/or refuse service to you as well (there goes that grandfathered unlimited data plan). That said, I don't know how many cases there are of them actually doing this, so from what I've seen, people say to just keep it within reason.
I'm planning to go pick up a moto x (card) today, but I need to know if I will be able to use it to create a personal wifi hotspot.
Right now, I have a Galaxy S (AT&T Captivate) and as soon as I installed Cyanogen, I was able to turn on the wifi hotspot and connect with my laptop. No extra fees from AT&T, it just worked.
Since there is no root or unlocked bootloader for the Moto X, will I still be able to enable this feature or will it still be removed from the OS like it was on my stock Galaxy S?
I don't want to have to pay $10 a month or something to use the data I've already paid for--I don't tether often, but it is often fairly important when I do.

It won't be an option until we get root. After that we can alter the build.prop and work around it.

Is it still an option if I pay for it? I guess I could pay for it until the device is rooted and then cancel (assuming that doesn't red-flag you for improper data use).
Hopefully it gets rooted soon.
Why is Bluetooth tethering disabled in Canada?
I can see why in the States because they charge for tethering.
but in Canada I am not charged I have WiFi tethering but no bluetooth tethering.
I should see if I can load another ROM, but frankly the Know thing has me chicken,
Can your provider know if you do tethering? That's the first time I've heard that
You probs not going to get an answer in this forum as it has nothing to do with the gear. Better off going to device forum (or general)

It has everything to do with the Galaxy Gear because the Galaxy Gear is the only reason why I want it.
I suppose the concern is security.

It isn't. Works just fine.
Every time you turn on your WiFi you're being logged and tracked.
Spy agency tracked passengers for days through free Wi-Fi
http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/0...wi-fi-at-a-major-canadian-airport-cbc-report/
That's why your (Every Canadian) carrier allows for WiFi tethering but disable Bluetooth tethering to encourage users to use wifi to be tracked by the government.

It has nothing to do with the gear as in the gear is not responsible for it not working...
Some carrier's block tethering because it is only offered on certain plans.
Lol bounce a thread than is 4 months dead.
Really does not matter much, the Canadian note 3 does not have native bluetooth tethering and that is all.
The next generation smart watches will be out soon, waiting for Android Wear devices, things have changed since last December.

True, but that's a Nexus 3, older phones used to have Bluetooth tethering until Canadian NSA Spy program went online and required the end of that.

Should bluetooth tether work on AT&T in USA now that I switched to their Mobile Share plan, and not the unlimited? I am on stock again for now, but would switch if I can get online on the watch. Thanks.
