want a ROM with .tar extension - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi my i9000 totally messed up. I can only goto download mode. even when i flash CWM and try installing any rom .the phone switches off in between. all i could do is flash rom directly using odin. can any one provide me any rom with .tar so that odin can flash as all rom i find are zip.

Find a stock ROM with 3 files , like XXJVU , then flash .tar based Value Pack like XWJW6 etc.
Here is a list of Stock ROM and link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
BTW , I think this thread should be in Galaxy S i9000 General.

Install the latest stock ROM and then use CFROOT to install CWM 3.0.x.x. Then install cm10 stable (zip format). Make sure to factory reset in CWM 3.0.x.x first, then install CM10, then it will reboot to a newer recovery so install CM10 again, then install GAPPS, then factory reset again. That should do the trick (just did exactly that 5 minutes ago).

[Q] Flash RevolutionRom on SGS I9000

Hi guys,
I'm really interested in flashing Revolution Rom to my SGS1. It currently has CyanogenMod7 on it.
I've looked at the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236432
but can't figure out if I'm meant to just flash the rom or if I somehow need to flash a stock Gingerbread first before then flashing the REvolutionROM.
Can anyone assist?
Apologies if this question's already been asked, I did a thorough search but couldn't find anything. Happy if you just point me to another thread if it's already answered.
thanks
Aaron
To revert from CM7 to any other samsung rom you need to first flash a full PDA stock rom with odin. with repartition. and 512 pit.
then you can change to what ever rom you want.

Hi Bork84, thanks for the reply. Where do I get the stock GB rom that will allow me to then flash RevolutionROM?
Am I able to just flash nandroid backup that I took before I flashed CM7? It's stock Froyo with Voodoo LF (rooted)
thanks
Hi mate u just go to www.samfirmware.com make an account and chk the firmware sec in toolbox and then select ur model and download the latest formware...JVR is the latest firmware on samfirmware download it and download odin extract that downloaded folder and u have 4 file 1 pit file 2 code 3 csc 4 modem.
Now open odin and put these file respectively ( dnt forget to closr kies if u have even from running services on windows) now put ur phone in download mode and connect through odin and tick the repartition on leftside and then start odin...
Of all goes well u r on stock GB
wait phone to phone to boot
now choose any kernel to root ur phone and again turnoff ur phone and get in download mode and choose that kernel in pda option of odin and this time unchk the repartition and start odin
now ur rooted
then download custom rom and put in ur internal sd and go to recovery or cwm mode and flash that rom.

[Q] Bootlooping Problem in Galaxy S I9000

Hi,
I have a problem when trying to flash my galaxy s and install ICS Dark night v5.5.
When I try updating the kernel using ODIN, my phone gets into bootloop.
It is a froyo installed phone. Also, I am unable to get recovery mode. It enters download mode though.
Can anyone help me out in this??? I am very new to this stuff... I am a beginner...
Held up in this for a couple of weeks.....
Thanks,
Sridhar
If you can boot into download mode, use ODIN to flash a stable rom, then get CWM and your back to where you were, hold off the nightly builds or post in the Cyanogenmod official thread or forums.
Thanks a lot... That did work.. But now i have got Mobile network not available error after flashing.....
Probably best to mention which version of software you are using and the source...
Best option is to flash stock gingerbread version via Odin.
www . theandroidsoul . com / xxjvu /
sorry can't put correct address in yet dont have enough thanks...
it would be better to update to any stable stock rom, go to sammobile.com...
i suggest you update to the latest firmware or ics stock rom for i9000 via odin then root that firmware you have chosen(CF-ROOT) and then update the custom rom darknight v5.5 via cwm...
I think you need gingerbread bootloaders for ics.. You were on Froyo, so it won't work.. You'll need to install a stock gingerbread rom with the pit file and repartition.. After that you can try an ics rom..
I found this thread. After attempting to get CM9 onto my S it wouldn't boot so I used odin to install a stock from from sammobile but now the phone just boot loops.
Could someone please help me.
More info:
After the odin flash - I get a screen like the recovery menu saying things such as "E:Format_volume:rfs format failed on /dev/block/stl10" and things of a similar nature - will have to see what the others say.
Any ideas?
You probably flashed a rom without bootloaders. Try flashing a 3 file rom from here and repartition with 512 pit.

[Q] HELPPPPP please soft brick

Hey peeps iv got a big problem it happened yesterday with my Galaxy note GTn7000. I was on stock ICS LPT and was flashing new kernels through CWM when suddenly my phone just kept freezing on the Samsung screen when I start it up and it has been happening since yesterday. I think it was the speedmod ICS kernel that I flashed that made this happen. I flashed Abys kernel through odin and could get in to CWM. I did factory reset/wipe cache/dalvik/cache and then flashed checkrom which was on my SD card. Installation was fine but then it got stuck on the Galaxy note startup screen. I was searching for answers on the XDA forums and someone suggested that you flash a stock full wipe GB rom. So I tried to flash LC1 open Europe rom and was waiting for an hour the the rom to flash through ODIN which had only a bit left on the bar to flash and it didn’t flash it just froze. I tried 3 times and the same thing happened . I have used the USB jig to erase previous downloads and reset binary count. I flashed ICS LPT rom through odin and it flashed normally but when it starts up it gets stuck on the Samsung screen. Any suggestions? I can get into download mode and CWM so it means Im in a softbrick. Do you think I should download an ICS rom and put it on to my SD card and then try flashing it ? Help would be appreciated thanks.
Here is the video of what happens. Basically i have waited for 4 hours yesterday and it just stays on the samsung screen
Hey, Id recommend you flashing back to GB via ODIN before we continue.
ICS still has a few bugs and that could interfere with getting you back up and running.
Hey thanks i will download a new GB stock rom, i cant post the video link because im a new member dang...

So you've extracted the original tar file, you don't need to, just point the original tar file to the pda section of pc odin, it will sort out each partition for you.

I would like to know if the first link is safe for me, and which ROM I should use of the ones listed there (I live in The Netherlands). Do you guys have any tips or some guides made for the noobs among us?
that 1st link is the safest and best.
download the rom of. your choice. It. doesn't need to be of. your region. although you can check the latest firmware on www.samfirmware.com....
Once downloaded, use pc odin with the downloaded rom tar.md5 file selected in the pda tab. The connect the phone to pc in download mode and press start.
If you are upgrading to ics, then do not do any wipes, first flash a safe kernel...

Thanks for replying. Good to know that that thread is safe, but what do you mean by flashing a safe kernel? Those terms mean nothing to me.
theres two way to flash ROM. 1 is using PC ODIN and the other one is CWM
Flashing Via PC ODIN .. you need to have two thing.. The Rom You Want to flash and the PC-ODIN software
Flashing Via CWM.. you need two things. You need to root your phone and you need to install CWM.
every rom comes with modem, kernel (the file that govern how to handle your phone cpu), csc... the kernel inside ics is known to have brickbug
theres no need to flash kernel if you are flashing Rom via PC ODIN... Flashing kernel is when you are using CWM....

So, I can just flash any ROM using ODIN, and there will be no risk bricking my device?
If I flash a ROM, will I have a fresh install, and will my kernel also change so that I don't have the brickbug anymore?

yes you can flash any ROM using ODIN safely without bricking your device.
yes you will have a fresh install. your kernel will change too. as for the brickbug....
If you flash via PC ODIN then everything is stock to what you flashed.the kernel the firmware the csc the modem..all as stock provided....
1.If you flash ICS via PC-ODIN then your kernel also would be stock ics kernel that has brickbug..
Warning :
Don't wipe anything from stock ICS recovery
Don't factory reset/Hard reset on stock ICS.
Don't flash any Wipe version of ICS ROM
let say you want to flash Latest JB Rom but you are on ICS stock.
first thing you need to do is root your device ...install CWM.. Flash safe kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
let say ive rooted... installed CWM with safe kernel...
what i always do is everytime i want to flash new rom whatever rom it is...i flash Speedmod 3-15 (safe kernel) and go to Advance>reboot recovery and flash any rom i want so that im on the safe side without worrying what kernel im on.
2.If you flash GB than your kernel will be GB kernel which is safe to wipe..
if you want to flash custom rom from gb then you root your device and installed CWM and Flash since GB kernel is safe.
but.. let say u flashed ICS and wanted to go back to GB. then you are not safe anymore,,, that is why i always flashed Speedmod kernel 3-15 (safe kernel) and reboot recovery (by going to advance>rebootrecovery) and flashed any rom... that way im always sure that im in safe kernel when flashing Rom

BajoPrimate you should name this kind of rom such as Custom Stock roms or custom roms based in stocks
You are right in your comment but I think it is really important, specially for newbies, we won't create confusions by this way

Custom Roms as Nathan's rom, CM7, CM9, CM10 can be flashed over Stock roms via CWM 5.x.
If you flash CM7 you can go back to stock using a CWM Backup, or you can directly flash another rom as Nathan's rom, CM10.1 ... whatever custom rom!
Only if you have got problems or you want to clean your system and set it by default when you unboxed your device, then you need to use Odin, also if you want to upgrade from Froyo 2.x. to Gingerbread 2.3.x.

I UNDESTOOD ALL WHAT YOU ASKED FOR :s
THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO FLASH A STOCK ROM >>>> ODIN!
THERE ARE 2 KIND OF STOCK ROM FILES >>>> ONE PACKAGE AND FULL PACKAGE
THIS 2 KIND OF FILES ARE THE SAME! THEY CAN BE FLASHED FOLLOWING HUBIX'S GUIDE!
IF YOU HAVE A CUSTOM ROM (ALL OF THEM HAVE .EXT4 FILE SYSTEM) WHEN YOU FLASH A STOCK ROM VIA ODIN, ODIN'LL CONVERT YOUR .EXT4 FILESYSTEM TO .RFS FILE SYSTEM (AS DEFAULT IN STOCK ROM)
IS IT CLEAR??
If you want to go back to CUSTOM STOCK ROM (Nathan's rom e.g.) only you need to flash it via CWM following dev's instructions
If you want to go back to OFFICIAL STOCK ROM (ktm, ddkq8, kte...) USE ODIN!!! It's the safe way, following hubix's guide.

Okk look at this odin image.
1..... If i load files in boot, phone, pda, csc and start flashing
Then it will be called multiple file pakage official rom
2.... Look at one pakage in the botom of this image that is disabled. If i load only one file (md5.tar) and start flashing then This will be called one pakage.
Will flashing of any way as given above will change file sytem to rfs ??

One package & multi package firmwares perform the same task. It is just that phone, csc, boot, pda, etc., are all integrated in one file. Yes the filesystem format will be converted, you needn't worry. Just flash. Prefer one package files over multi package files as they are always easy to handle & less prone to errors.

You don't have to format system nor do the 3 wipes. Maybe, you can do the 3 wipes after flashing it via Odin.
I used to always wipe after flashing the ROM via Odin. Never faced any problems so far

If you want to flash a patch you'll need to mount /system to be able to write/modify in /system partition when you finish is not necessary to unmount it, android automatically unmount it when you reboot you phone (as default)
