[Q] GT-I9000 2.21 root? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Struggling to find an up to date guide on how to root 2.21 for this phone.
Biggest issue is, the usb is broken on this phone, and I am charging via putting batteries into a external battery charger, so I need to be able to root and put a custom rom on via the phone and sd card, without using the usb or programs on pc.
I tried an old z4root apk I found and it didn't seem to work, so any ideas?
Thanks

?
any help?

Flashing rom without USB

Hello people,
Anybody know if it is possible to flash a rom without using USB? So using an SD card or bluetooth for example.
Hope you can assist me
Nopes! its required to have physical connection between phone and pc via usb.
sdcard flashing is only possible if you had already backed up the rom at present working on the phone onto a sdcard and most important that the phone is already CID unlocked.

It needs a physical connection because it also charges using USB, normally during upgrades devices consume more energy so the companies prefer devices to be connected to a charger while being upgraded or flashed thats why you need it connected with USB so that it can charge and data can also transfer fastly and securely.
Secondly if you would be using a Wifi Connection or Bluetooth to Flash you ROM you can charge your wizard with a charger and upgrade but what if your wizard stops recieving signlas of bluetooth or WiFi? Wizard will be a definite brick. So there is a need of secure medium for transfer that is why USB is used.
I hope i helped. TC

[Q] SGS I9000M not recognized by the computer

When I connected my phone to the computer this morning it did nothing..No device unknown, nothing on computer, zilch!!! I was like let me do a master reset and format the memory card. That did nothing too. I tried switiching out cables, switched out computers, but same thing, the phone is charging but does not show up on my computer. I have another SGS that is detected on both the computers with both cables so I ruled out the driver/cable issue. Kies does not recognize the phone either. I have not done anything to it. It has the factory Bell ROM with 2.3.3 with UGKG3 firmware. The phone makes calls but just cannot be detected by the computer making it completely useless as I cannot load anything on it (Music/pictures). I am out of warranty so sending it to Samsung is not possible. Do I have a fried board? What are my options. The phone is not rooted and has never seen any custom firmware. Any help is appreciated.
I had that problem after I rooted the Bell UGKG3 rom, but you're not rooted, so not really sure.
I just rebooted my computer and it was recognized again.
You've eliminated all the obvious issues with the other cables and phones.
As for loading music and pictures, if you have an external microSD card in the phone, you could take it out and load it with a USB reader for microSD cards.
If you can load and run Apps then likely the board is fine. Try cleaning the port with rubbing alcohol and a bit of q-tip on a pin. They can be very sensitive to dirt. Like in that you'll see nothing in the qtip but it works again...
Also check if it is recognized in odin separately as if it is OK there it may be a rom issue.

I'm sure you just haven't installed the proper drivers.
I have a bell phone too, but just made sure I installed them manually.

Black Rose: My phone is not rooted. Microsd card is the last thing I want to do as I wanted to root the phone and use the internal 16gb memory. WHen I install a microsd card and plug the phone in the computer it still doesnt show, so I am thinking it is the usb port on the phone
G: I will go get some rubbing alcohol. THe phone is not recognized in ODIN either. I can get to download mode..is there something I can do to reflash the phone?
TheToiletSpaula: How can it be drivers when I have 2 of the same phones and one gets recognized and the other doesnt?

I know this is an old thread but is there any news on this particular problem. My SGS have the same problem (not recognized as a phone in xp) phone does boot up an can load apps etc. fine. I can go into download mode and recovery and phone does charge via the cable. I tried a different cable without luck. Even tried to reinstall drivers and ended up reinstalling my whole OS on my laptop. First win7 without luck and now I´m back on xp. Also tried a friends desktop computer but same problem....

Backup files needed for pre Mango

I don't have access to a Y cable or goldcard, I'm on bootloader 5.12 and on TMOUS. I've tried the Europe_401 method but no luck, I am not SIM unlocked, nor do I know how to do so.
I've seen a method that can get you back to pre-Mango using Zune restore, problem is that I just got this particular HD7 and am not on the same computer as I was in the past when I initially did the update on my previous HD7. Is there a way to get a copy of the backup needed to restore from Zune?
Thanks.

Look mate, the easy way is to make the y-cable, I did it with spare parts and converted my TMobile HD7 to a European HD7..., I tried everything, even the MS tool and all are trash, the Y-cable is the only option.
remember 1GB microSD card, the Y-Cable, and power (whether it's USB from a PC or the wall charger)
if you need more help, I'll gladly assist you.

I actually stripped down a USB hub and mated everything together following some tutorial here. I got power to my SD card reader and to the phone.
I was using a 32gb micro SD due to me not having another. I put the phone in USB host mode, connected USB, then the phone said Loading for like 15 minutes.
I removed the USB, tried again, but only kept reading USB host mode...the phone still works though.

Root KL3 without USB

Hi guys. I need to root my girlfriends N7000 to SIM unlock it and eventually change the ROM. Somehow, she managed to damage the USB port and it only charges but connecting the phone to a PC wont detect it so I can't root using a PC.
My question is, are there still any apps like z4root to root the phone without USB?
The phone is on KL3,
Thanks!
The only way i remeber to root the gb is by pushing a cf-kernel into the fone and it can't be done without connecting it to pc

[Q] Formatted /system, Download mode not working, extremiest HW USB modding

I-896, from the start USB was working in Lo-Speed mode when data transferring (1 Mb/s speed). I was too stupid to format /system from CWM and then reboot to Download mode which wasn't working (USB Device attached not recognized, blind ODIN and Kies). Can I somehow flash stock ROM? Is this an phone's MicroUSB-Female issue or deep hardware's one(processor, PCB)? Here are some photos of me trying to connect USB directly:
Did u see this sticky thread about Captivate - PC Connection Issues, etc? ...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33227541
Did u try a Jig to get into Download mode ?? Here is a thead on how to make a Jig...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9238587

Yes, I've seen this thread (and many others too, done a small research for about 1 hour). Tried all the solutions from the threads. My phone easily switches to Download mode, but it isn't recognized by PC. And it's not a driver/cable problem because my second Captivate works properly.
To be more concrete: code 43 in Device Manager, Device not recognized in tray.
since you've got the phone opened up, clean the micro usb connector and check resistance of each connector contact to test point on board. then check resistance between pins. if 2 and 3 are shorted, power chip wont pass data to phone.
also, if you enabled fast usb charging in kernel, that would be problem.
you want battery out, good contact cleaner. get completely dry and clean before applying power.
Have never using Fast Charging (only GB ROMs and kernels), bought a new captivate with broken screen, now trying to get the phone working.
Why isn't power chip allowing to pass data to phone? I haven't normal multimeter at the moment. Can you advise me how to flash Captivate w/o USB? Is there a way? And, maybe, this bug appeared because my Captivate was from Rogers, not the I-897 one?

Well as far as I know, the Rogers one is an international phone, which is the i9000 not i879 (not 100% sure, correct me if I'm wrong) so that could have a lot to do with it.
As for flashing w/o usb, if you have an external SD card the phone can read yes it's possible but it's not advisable because you can completely screw yourself like I did . My phone currently won't boot besides Download Mode, Recovery Mode, and the bootscreen but since I don't have USB data connectivity I can't fix the phone (when I flashed speedmod kernel, everything went fine. But it doesn't read my external, so I can't flash my phone to fix it).
If you do choose to flash without a USB, please for the love of everything holy, MAKE SURE YOU ALSO PUT THE ROM .ZIP ON THE INTERNAL SD AS WELL

Actually the Rogers version is i896 and the other is i897. To my understanding the hardware is identical and shouldn't be a problem using stuff for the 897 with the 896.
Yes, I have now tested all the parts compatibility between I-896, I-897 motherboards and camera, part with cardreader, speaker, vibrator and sim-reader. All works properly.
How can I flash the ROM using my external SD card? I can't access it through CWM (can't even mount, I think mount binary was formatted with the /system partition). Is there a guide?

I can't access it either, hence why my phone is bricked :\.
If you have no access to the internal SD, you're in the same boat as me lol. If you know for a FACT that the usb port is damaged, there's a website that will repair it for you for about $35. However, you can usually get a used cappy from ebay for around $80-$100, so if there's more issues might as well just buy a new one and use the current for spare parts.
EDIT: Excuse my last post, I forgot you had already not been able to use the phone to access the internal SD. Long day at work
Just bought I-897 with a broken screen for 33 USD. I'm wondering if I can flash my old PCB someway, even if I'll need to find a hardware tool for this. Will try checking USB port's resistance, especially 2, 3 pins as was mentioned above.
MicroUSB consists of 5 pins, and the place where USB-F port is connected to PCB has 7 (as can be seen on photo). Where can I find a pinout for this one?
