My Google wallet fix - Nexus 4 General

Let me start off by telling you all my problem I had. I was able to set up wallet, but not able to successfully make a purchase anywhere outside of Walgreens. I tried a slew of stores and always got the " reader detected, but transaction did not go through" error. And Google wallet support was no help.
So this is what I did to fix my issue. It was pretty simple, I just went into app management and cleared all data from the wallet app. (I did not disable my device from the web or remove and cards from my wallet account). Once the data was clear, I went back into the wallet app and re-set it up like I did before. The app pulled my credit card info from the cloud and I was ready to go... well sort of...
I went back to Walgreens and tried to make a purchase, it went through, but I had to tap my phone a couple times. I did notice that when I held my phone a certain way, it worked better. So I went to 7/11 later that day and tried again. This time I tried holding the phone upright like I usually did and I got an error. So I turned the phone (I'll explain later) and it worked right away. I tried Meijer the next day and holding the phone this new way, it worked the first time. I returned to Meijer a few days later, went to the same register as before, but held the phone the old upright way. An error again, so I turned the phone end it worked. Since then, I've been holding the phone the new way at different stores and every time, it works on the first time.
These are the two things I do when paying and it's worked well.
1) unlock the phone and hold the phone horizontally so that the volume buttons are facing down.
2) place and HOLD the phone so that the headphone jack end lines up to the left edge of the reader. I say hold because I've found that just tapping the phone doesn't always activate wallet.
You'll then hear the tone that the phone has recognized the reader, pull it away and type your pin and then place and hold in the same way as before till you see the "w" pop up on the screen.
I know there will be people here that will tell me I'm wrong, that the NFC chip doesn't have to be positioned a certain way as long as it's on the reader, but I've done trial and error testing and I have yet to get an error holding the phone in my above mentioned way as opposed to holding the phone upright or with the volume buttons facing up. So do with this info as you will, but if it does work for you, I'm glad I could help.

Google Wallet and T mobile fix
I was unable to activate google wallet on my nexus 4. I kept getting an error about my phone not being fully activated and that I need to ensure I was connected to the network.
I tried what I saw in a few other forums saying I needed to clear the app data by going to Settings > Apps > All > Wallet > Force Stop > clear data
I would restart my phone, and re-enable Google Wallet in the settings menu again Settings > Apps > All > Wallet > Enable
None of this worked, and I had been trying a few times a day.
I read that it had something to do with new ISIS sim cards from T Mobile, however this was not the case for me.
Today I finally called Google Devices Support 8668363987, Option 1: Support Option 2: Nexus Devices
Spoke to the first Customer Service Rep, she transferred me to Google Wallet Support, where they asked if I had reset the App data previously, and if I had the most recent version of Google Wallet. Yes I did for both.
He told me to keep trying to activated it, as they were working on a fix, but had no ETA to announce. It is a known bug according to him.
Well, tonight I got home, Cleared the App data, restarted my phone as I have in the past, and Launched Google Wallet. It magically worked.
I think Google Wallet Support has to manually reset something behind the scenes.
Hopefully this little post gets picked up by anyone who is still frustrated by trying to activate their Google Wallet on their new Nexus 4 without any luck so far.
I think a call is necessary.

I work part time at a CVS and thought this would be worthwhile to mention. The app will not work on all registers. I noticed that even though all of our registers accept Mastercard and Visa RFID cards, only 3/5 of them work with it. Those 3 are also distinguishable from the rest. I'll try to get a picture when I'm working this weekend and post it.
If you can't get it to work, don't blame the app, blame the stores (or the people who make the stupid things).
Also, I can confirm that holding the phone with the volume buttons down definitely works for me. I never really tried holding it vertically though...

I recently received a replacement N4 and had the same Wallet experience as you (1st was replaced after I called Goo about battery drain when the phone was off). A few hours after I received an email from support stating exactly what they told you, the set up screen magically appeared. Using it at the register is still challenging though and slower than just swiping a credit card and the retailer support in my area is somewhat limited, so I'm wondering why I even bother. From the reaction of the cashiers, I get the impression there's not too many of us using it at POP. The best application I've experienced so far was at a vending machine in a museum.

At least you made a payment, in UK the wallet is not available. So cool to make payments with your phone.

What does this mean? That the phone is perpendicular to the NFC terminal (as if it were sitting on its edge) with the volume buttons almost making contact with the terminal?
Or are you describing some other way to hold it?

I'm sorry, I should have explained it better. Hold the phone so the screen is facing you, but in landscape, not portrait and place the back of the phone that says nexus against the reader pad. I suggest having the volume buttons pointing to the ground. Let the phone make contact for a second or two, not just a quick tap.
UPDATE TO MY OP:
I've updated wallet and though everything processes faster, wallet still does not work at CVS or Meijer* me. Now, I don't know if it's because of the store or the hardware on my phone, but the software did not fix my issue.
*mine has only worked at Meijer's self checkout and sill only works at the self checkout.
SECOND UPDATE:
I was in my wife's home town and both Meijer traditional checkout and McDonald's both worked. So it's just the store, not my phone.

[Q] Screen orientation not changing?

Hi,
I got a Captivate in the mail yesterday. It seemed to be working fine.
I installed LauncherPro and screen rotation was working fine.
Unfortunately it's not rotating the screen. I went to the settings to verify that screen rotation was enabled, and it was.
I can't get rotation anywhere. LaunchedPro Home screen, text messages app, email app, gmail, browser. None of them work.
Is this a known issue? Could a factory reset resolve this? Maybe flashing another ROM? Also, is there any app that can test the accelerometer?
regards,
del
Have you removed LauncherPro to see if that is the issue? I would do that prior to doing a reset of your phone.
Yeah. I also flashed a stock Samsung ROM from this thread:
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
No go. I also tried a Bubble Level app from the Market. It is not moving (not getting anything form the accelerometer).
Guess I'm gonna have to contact Samsung, because I got it from ebay.
Yep looks like the accelerometer is dead
Sent from my phone so excuse the spelling errors
Oh lucky me.
Called Samsung, had to explain the problem around 4 times to the rep. After a number of restarts, enabling/disabling screen orientation on the menu, and even a user data clear, she agreed that there was a problem.
So, she starts making arrangements for me to send in the phone and, all of a sudden, says: "I'm really sorry, we can't honor the warranty because you bought it off of ebay."
Sounds like I bought a Lemon.... tried contacting the seller via email to see if the phone is still in the 30 day AT&T warranty and she seems to be ignoring me. (Maybe she knew beforehand and that's why she sold it?).
I think I'm going to open a case in Paypal.
i don't know if this was resolved but you can access a test mode by going into *#0*# into the phone then there is a sensor selection select that and then there is an image test that test rotation i messed with that and got it working. but im now on a custom rom and it doesnt work anymore.

[Q] SIM recently removed, verify identity

Out of nowhere when i rebooted my phone i got a messege on my phone saying "The SIM card was recently removed, sign into your account to verify identiy" I try loging in but it says its wrong. I cant do anything with the phone when its like this. I found a work around with a custom lockscreen if i turn on airplane mode as soon as it turns on. but its extremly annyoying not being able to use the home button!!! So if anyone has a fix please tell me D:. Im rooted and safestraped on a deoxed version of the stock rom (well i think it is) I just got the phone last night, i started having thease issues later this morning though.
Its a known issue with the RAZR and the Droid 4, the only solution is to hard reset the device.
If anyone is curious I actually found a temp fix for this!! What you do is you restart your phone, as soon as it turns on, quickly turn airplane mode on. Your phone works perfectly now...its just useless. SO TO FIX THAT. You must then go to wireless settings and turn on wifi. Our main goal is to remove your email from accounts, in my case, it was my verizon yahoo email. I think its whatever email shows up for you to verify. If you try removing it over wifi though it will have a server error.
So since you can at least go in the market now (or google play now or whatever lol) you should download an app called LockMenu (free version) that will replace your lockscreen and it has a slider to go directly to your home launcher, once that works fine you can turn airplane mode off. (Your home button and notification bar dont work right now btw) In any case now that your phones data is on again you can now just go to accounts and remove the cursed email.
Now just reboot, and you shouldn't have the error!
Hallelujah
I signed up for an account just to say Thank You to Artic.Light!! I was customizing my phone and while setting up my gmail account activity feed my phone froze up. Upon reboot I received the "SIM card removed" message and was completely f-ing devastated. My GF is 9 months preggers and was out and about in heavy rain so communication was critical. I was freaking out and scrambling for like a half hour looking online for someone who cracked the code. After finally finding and following Artic.Light's instructions my phone is back up and running fine and I could not be happier!! Mega Huge Thanx!!!!
FIX
I found a fix for this. Do what the guy said and put the phone in airplane mode. Reboot the phone and turn it back on. Airplane mode should still be on when the phone comes back on. Simply go to the dial pad. call someone, it will give you a message about airplane mode being turned off, just ignore it and complete the phone call. Stay connected in the phone call for about 2 minutes to allow the sim card to refresh. and thats it.

Nick, did your solution continue to work after fixing it and then powering off? Unfortunately, it did not for me. I'd been using the power off in airplane mode method, then after powering on, make a call. I typically just call me voice mail and hang up after a few seconds. Your suggestion gave me hope but after leaving the call open (with my work phone) for several minutes (and trying it a couple times, it reverted back to the same issue.
Does anyone know why they don't just fix the bug?

My Phone Erased Itself?!?

I was minding my own business grilling hamburgers for family and friends this afternoon when I thought, "my phone seems awfully hot in my pocket, what's up?" I took it out to see the dreaded green Android and the word "Erasing". It was already too late to do anything... it took another 20 minutes or so and sure enough it rebooted into the setup screen as though I had just done a factory reset.
Anybody have a similar experience? At this point it's clearly been erased, there's nothing to do but set it up again and back up more regularly, but what happened? No way did I press the boot loader button combo this afternoon. My boot loader is unlocked and I dirty flashed LMY47Z about two weeks ago but no other notable changes recently.

Al kidding aside, never heard or read of a `premature` wipe. You must have a wild and active life to be abe to do that
I'm sure you have heard the expression "butt dial" when you mistakenly dial a number while the phone is in your pocket? Well, you just did a "butt wipe"!

That just gave me a good laugh, thanks!
But seriously, to the OP does anyone have your gmail password? Because you can remote wipe a device using Android Device Manager.
I setup my friends phone for him. We both pull pranks on each other so to get him back for letting all the air out of my tires while my car sat in my garage I remote wiped his phone on his way home.

Nobody has my password and I use two factor Auth for my Google account so I really don't think so. I logged in to the device manager site to see if anything looked suspicious but there's no history of activity or anything like that.
It must have been a "butt wipe" as the other post said! [emoji23] wish I could figure out how it happened though.

Very unsettling. Now you're always going to be paranoid with that phone.

Well, our phones can locally wipe back to default state if a security code is incorrectly input 10 times in a row, I believe.
It's possible that you *did* butt wipe, I'm thinking.
- ooofest
Similar Case
This is one of the cases when you have a big string which gets inputted by the emergency call keypad. That screen matches with the butt wipe code of Android making the device in erase mode. I got the reason.
I travel a lot and always have the phone in my pocket so can someone tell how to switch off the emergency keypad.
Turn off ambient display and the phone won't wake in your pocket
I thought I did this once bit it was actually that I had switched user profiles by clicking on the blue figure circle in the notification panel. Check to see if you are signed into your account or more than likely your guest account.
You better hope you mistakenly did it or it could be remote code execution that might have caused the wipe by a third party.
Are you running a custom ROM. If no and you're running some variation they have security features in it now like most other devices that too many incorrect password attempts will wipe the phone more than likely what it happen
I just realized someone revived a dead thread lol. All of us saw the action and tried to help him.

[Bounty?] Remove unlocked bootloader warning.. OR

One of the biggest banes of having root/magisk is unlocking the bootloader. The warning screen that does indeed slow down booting, also advertises itself to thieves as "You can wipe me clean and use me". Obviously, removing that splash screen won't fix that aforementioned scenario, but it would, (if it can be completely skipped.. The power button won't skip it anymore), speed up booting, and at least not advertise to the world my phone is all for taking.
One thing I'm really hoping for, if the bootloader warning can't be skipped or removed, is at least having the ability to modify (or disable) the hardware buttons being able to enter bootloader, recovery, powering down, or emergency mode. That doesn't seem to be entirely possible, SO , is there a way to fake it while the phone is still on? In example, a "fake" power off icon (while on lockscreen) that will mute all sounds, vibrations, and the screen from ever coming on. Or, being able to fake power off from the powerkey, a few seconds before actual power off. If the power key\ can truly be remapped or disabled (and be made to fake recovery, emergency mode, or fastboot and thus deter the thief, assuming such will be necessary if the power key is interceptable anyway.)
Xposed seems to have the power (but I don't know for sure) to do this, as with magisk, or some kind of kernel.. There would be a bounty if any of this is any possible (Of least $100-300..) It would be worth it for me not to lose my phone to horrible situations; (San Diego.. 20 lost phones from pick pocketing at a party.. The theft was most likely to extract parts from the "inunlockable" phones.
Additional: One would argue just to remove the SIM.. But in theory, couldn't I glue/solder a 2nd sim in the second ("hidden") slot? I have a t-mobile oneplus whose sim tray is only one sim; hardly anyone would think about a second sim being embedded in the phone, especially when they see the sim tray, which would enable me to track my phone continously. Especially before the phone is most likely disassembled, (PreReqs: Remove data icons, airplane mode or data enabling from my quick icons)
Also interested in a fix for this
I don't think there will be a fix for this. It's been the same for a while now on Android.
Not going to happen. It's been this way for 3 years or so. Plus who cares? How often do you reboot your phone for it even matter? I reboot my phone once or twice a week but even if you do it once a day, does it bother you that much that 6 or seconds on the warning matters?
Yep, has been that way for a while... Just cover it with a business card when booting ??
I would like to get rid of this annoying screen as well.
I have never had a phone stolen, lost or broken.
I live in Germany!
Cerberus allows you to do a fake reboot / shutdown. It's a security app that allows you to locate your phone and do all kinds of stuff with it remotely. You can set it so that at the lock screen, if the power button is pressed and they choose to reboot or shut down it will lock the phone and keep the screen off to trick whoever has your phone into thinking it's off and can't be located. You can also install it as a system app (and disguise it), so if your phone gets wiped it will survive and you can still locate it. On my phone it just shows up as a generic looking system app called "system framework" you can also hide it from your app drawer and make it so that the only way to open it is to dial a secret code into your phone dialer and hit call. There already has been an Xposed module that does this too. I used it like 4 or 5 years ago but can't for the life of me remember the name and have no clue if it's still around
Edit: oh yeah, it's called APM+ (advanced power menu)
Is available on edxposed but isn't on magisk manager. It hasn't been updated since 2015. Give it a try, maybe it will still work, who knows

If you have an unlocked bootloader, flashing magisk modules or playing with xposed modules and plenty of configurations that require a reboot, it's kinda important to not have 6-10 seconds gobbled by a totally unneccessary warning. Plus, the warning pretty much alerts even the most dumb thieves that the phone is 100% USEABLE once physically in their hands.

Can google assistant talk back be disabled on this SM-G973U Galaxy S10?

Recently was gifted this phone, and was going to sell it, but realized it's a nice phone, and pretty quick.
It took a minute to import a lot of the apps and settings from my old phone, and one nagging thing, is I can't get google assistant to shut the hell up. I don't mind the explanations of longer questions, but when I say "Hey, google, Open Camera" it always responds back to me saying "OK. Get ready" and it confirms every command I give it, and I hate that.
My older phone an LG V30 never had this problem.
Any advice on how to disable the google assistant talkback?
NOTE: I have already gone to accessibility-Talkback-turn off Talk back, and it the sliding button IS turned to the off position, but I still get talk back, (I am assuming this is Samsung's side of things) and I can't find a setting anywhere in google assistant.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks!
