Hey gsuys i was wondering if anyone knows a video on youtube that shows exactly installing a Tom? Also can someone please tell me what a bootloader and a kernel is? I've been researching but i can't find anything since im a noob..

I think you mean a ROM. Bootloaders are files which load other data and programs which are then executed from RAM. Often, multiple-stage boot loaders are used, during which several programs of increasing complexity sequentially load one after the other in a process of chain loading.
As far as Android is concerned, the kernel file is related to threading and memory management. It's sort of the map of the infrastructure that helps the other programs when and how to act and manage the resources.
For your own sake, take a week or two to do some reading and get familiar with the terminology, software, and processes involved with flashing a ROM. I can promise you that without some basic slef-taught information, you will end up bricking the hardware 75% of the time. Get to understand how the phone works and why other people have problems, and how they solved them. Don't make mistakes that others have made when the information on how to avoid it is here in the forums.
Many people are too impatient or uninterested in how these phones work to do the due diligence. You can find ROM flashing guides, but without some basic knowledge, if something goes wrong you will find yourself in panic mode. Just look through these forums. Half of them start with 'HELP!' or 'Phone Bricked'. Don't be one of them. Arm yourself with some information and you will soon be solving your own problems, and possibly helping others.
Good luck and have fun. The Captivate is one of the most moddable smartphones out there, you have already made a good decision. Don't stop now!
see that wasnt hard to ask without a subtle insult. mobiletechvideos has plenty of install tuts for 2.2 and 2.3.3 based roms. stick with 2.2 roms to lessen the chance of a perma brick

+1 on josh @ mobile tech videos. That site was 85% of the research I did on my first flash. The other 15% was asking courteous questions to the great people on this forum.
Agreed on sticking with 2.2 ROM at first, less chance of hard brick and they are very stable.

Whats wrong with reading forums of the rom before hand? Don't get me wrong I've used videos (my very first flash and my first GB rom) but I had done a good reading before hand. I had a decent idea on what I had to do before watching videos. =/

I don't think theirs anything wrong with reading up in the forums, its just a lot more easier on newcomers to watch the videos so they have something to look at step by step and if they want to they can go back and watch different parts over and over =] well at least that's how I see it lol

When I flashed my first ROM, I had read quite a bit on here, but I watched one of Josh's videos and paused at about every step! Bottom line here is, everyone is different and some people are "visual" learners. Having said that, I agree whole heartedly with the "read twice flash once" (then follow a vid if ya have to) mentality.
Of course, the videos are very good and simplify things immensely. However, what the videos do not show you often times is how to avoid mistakes and errors and how to fix them if you make them. This is why it is always a good idea to read through the thread of the kernel or ROM or what have you to see what has gone wrong for others. It can seem daunting to try to read through a 20+ page thread, which may take an hour, but that hour might save you 4 or more hours while trying to recover from a brick or failed flash. Add to that some peace of mind because perhaps you've seen or read about the same issue and can do some problem solving.
Both are helpful, but reading threads is essential.
Alright, please don't butcher me and be constructive before posting. I've noticed a lot of people posting in this forum getting bashed by others not really helping in anyway.
Anyway, I got a stock N1 2.3.4 and love it. The only issue I have with my N1 is storage. Now I have done the whole adb thing and set to go to the SD card, but I am app hungry as I am a systems engineer and have a lot of troubleshooting apps. Problem being, I have to constantly choose between what I need vs. what I want to use; and both conflict due to size. I have been looking at possibly rooting and even possibly going to a mod (Cyanogen) but do I really need to? My only issue is storage of the apps, so if I can get all the apps I need onto my N1 without having to do any of the previously mentioned, I rather do that.
Any ideas and help would be awesome.
If you root you can run a rom such as, cyanogen which allow moving app to sd-ext. (a script such as dark tremor's a2sd is required)
You could even move dalvik cache and data to the ext. Moving app to the fat 32 don't help much as data still reside internally taking up space.
I guess the follow up question would be then, does it do it natively or like you said, there will be some reading and tinkering to do?
I just rooted to CM7 for the same reason and I get like 100 to 200mb extra space with all my apps already installed before I used to have 25mb free. it does make a difference good luck rooting.

Read the FAQ, question 9.
There is a good reason why some people are bashed on the forum - it's because they refuse to read and do their homework before they go around opening threads and asking the same question for 100000th time. Please try to avoid being one of those getting bashed, and before you ask - invest your time searching the forum for answers. Think of it this way: are you the first that is likely to ask that question? Does it seem like a rare question? And if both answers are "no" - then you'll most probably find your answer without asking.

Some people are just cranky... there is always a bit of RTFM...but this is a forum.
I finally made the plunge about a month ago with CM7 for some very similar reasons as I was just running out of space to run any good applications. I still don't have it tweaked the way I want but doing more research on getting Darktremor to work best for my application.
I have been reading these forums since before I got my N1 and just did not have the need to install any of the ROM's...mainly as I did not think I had the time if things went sideways (usually happens with my projects it seems) but the instructions people have put out are really good and fairly easy. I might not have my mom try to root a device but it is surprisingly easy. I have not jumped over to the nighties yet and may do so in the future.
So my general summary is do it... Root... and get CM7 or the flavor of the month you will be surprised on how much you like it and wonder like I have why in the world you waited so long
Good luck
Chris
app2sd doesn't need a custom rom or anything like root to work 'n' its built in since froyo. anyway try the "pm setInstallLocation" process it might work even without root.
currently there are two different ways to root, with or without unlocking the bootloader.
anyway storage isn't necessarily a reason for choosing CM or whatever like MIUI/Modaco or anything.

At this point I don't think people should really mind simple questions at this point of time. the N1 section doesn't really have that much traffic like before when good questions would get buried under the how to root or best roms questions.
It's actually not so much about the forum traffic, but about the quality of answers. People get tired of answering the same things over and over, and eventually they stop. As long as there are enough knowledgeable people that still answer - it won't matter, but when enough of them stop answering - there won't be good answers to keep this forum trustworthy.

Instead of wasting your time and adding to your post count with wasteful information, why do you skip the thread and move along. You are not being helpful being the forums Dad. There are thousands of posts here and I'm not about to scour them for 2 simple questions that I have, which by the way I did go and look. There are follow up questions that I had as well, that some members, unlike you, have been very courteous in answering. I was wondering how long it would take you to post a useless post, since you seem to be the one bashing and scolding everyone here.

Trust me I wish this was the case. It leaves always files on the main memory and even though I really don't have that many applications the storage left is only 30mb. After a bit of browsing on the web on it, I get running out of space notifier too and I have done both the app2sd and the setinstall location.
Thank you for those who posted with useful info unlike some. Anyway, going back to the topic, I just ordered a class 10 card since mine are only 2 and 4. Did notice quite a few people mentioned that as a must. Now while reading on the CM7 rom, I did notice some saying they have nightlies but have failed to come up with what the heck is it. Any info on that version of CM7?

I guess you didn't read the FAQ after all, otherwise you would have known that all the "courteous members" of the forum that answered you, don't know a thing about A2SD - which wasn't mentioned anywhere in the thread - and all the space that CM7 helps you gain isn't nearly enough for most people with N1. Even using A2SD without Dalvik2SD flag is not enough for most people.
But since you insisted on calling the FAQ "wasteful info" and bashing me personally, instead of actually reading the required minimum - I'll move to other threads, and you'll get your help from others. If you'll find someone willing to help, that is.
The forum also has search for a reason.

Now i have the following problems.
- Cant connect to PC (dont suggest me to try other cables , other computers , install drivers etc.)
- Odin wont work
-Android SDK wont work
-When someone calls me the phone shuts off
-The Mitra ROM is accessible but there are alot of bugs , i can still use it if i have to perform something.
-Recovery mode wont work.
-Download mode works but my computer wont detect my phone.
-Phone shuts off when i enable wifi
What i want to do is:
]- Use some app one the phone which will wipe everything so i can install original Gingerbread rom again.
I can use a SD card reader to transfer stuff into the SD car and then use Astro to transfer the files to Internal memory.

Dude, please don't blame a ROM for a fault on your phone that was there when you bought it!!
You really don't have to keep opening new thread for the same problem over and over and over and over....
We get it, you get it, the phone is knackered, you bought it like that, take the damn thing to a Samsung/independent repair shop and get it fixed!!!
There is no magical app this week that will fix it, there wasn't one last week and there won't be next week.
So seriously save yourself and us the time, effort and aggravation and get your ass to a service center! I am sorry for sounding harsh but look at all the threads you've posted...

The only fault with the phone was that it wouldnt connect to usb , all the other problems occurred after i installed Mitra ROM
I never got a clear answer , ok so the repair shop will magically fix the phone? I dont have any warranty now because of this rom
There was no other problem with the phone when i bought it , besides the usb connecting issue.
Lol, yes they will magically fix it, probably charge you something to replace the USB port or motherboard.
But honestly I think that is your only option.
You could ask them for an estimate before any work is carried out or you could try to return the phone to the guy you bought it from.

First of all, I am going to assume (perhaps wrongly) that you are 14 years-old (from your user name), and believe me when I tell you: I know that age is hard, and I know because I've been there, however, no matter how hard it was for me I knew that if I dared asking my mother what a word meant, I'd get immediate attention and instructions to f-off and check up on a dictionary (there was no wikipedia nor google back then) and that no-one else was going to do for me what I didn't do by myself, it is with such background that I want to tell you something:
Last saturday I decided to try ICS on my N1, I had no idea where to start since it had been over 8 months when I last did anything to my phone. Still it took me 25 minutes to not only find the right thread, read it, understand it, download the stuff I needed, and read again to make sure I am not doing something dumb, it also was enough time to actually do the whole process.
Now, considering you already found your way into XDA-Developers and you know how to read threads and know how to post questions, I'd say you have wasted approximately 1 hour thinking somebody is actually going to give you the ROM for ICS and Blackrose, let alone baby-walk you through the process.
I am going to assume that most devs are ignoring this thread (and rightly so) as well as most respected members (and I'd like to consider myself a quiet, self-respected member) but still, I do believe its good to take a bit of time from everyday routine to let someone else know "hey! you are doing it wrong" and hopefully get into that person's head and make that little switch go click.
If after all of this you still feel entitled to have someone hand you over a couple of files, please by all means head over to this location: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
Thanks and have a great life!
srry im very new here and i couldnt get my way around and ive been checking for hours on the files for ics on the N1 and had nothing but thanks for ur reply
as i said, again im extremely new to all of this and i dont know how to put ROMs in the phone and how to just do any of this if anyone can just give me something from where i can start i will be gladly appreciated
See, now that is different and worth of paying at least a little bit of attention. However I don't believe you have spent hours without making some sense of anything, at least you know about ICS and Blackrose, you may have a rough idea of what you want to accomplish, and so I'll point you in the right direction by telling you to look for the very first thread on the android development forum for nexus one, the one referring to the wiki and to now read it instead of skipping it as you probably did the first time. I'm sure if you read through it you'll understand the basics and will be able to figure it out really soon.
Good luck.

I use this one in my (now replaced by SGS3) nexus one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366897
You should read the instructions carefully, the process involves a few steps...
Note that there are 2 o 3 ICS ROMs for Nexus One, and they all have some glitches (USB tethering, camera, SoDs) but they are quite usable.
Hi all,
I have had my Note for few weeks and like it, but have a few queries.
1 - The battery for me dies really quickly when doing anything, I can fully charge it then talk on Facebook for an hour and it's down to 50% just from that, or play a game and in a hour it loses 60%, is this normal? I have everything turned off and brightness down at 50% (I kinda refuse to have it less than that as one of the reasons I got the phone is because if the display) and even at 50% it isn't as good as I know it can be, but the battery just dies so quickly!
The following queries are regarding ICS which I updated too yesterday.
2 - Since upgrading to ICS, everytime I get a text and read it the message icon number doesn't leave from the messaging tab, like as if I haven't read the text, this didn't happen before the upgrade and wondered if anyone else is having this issue and what I can do? I can get rid of it via deleting convo or restarting the phone but I shouldn't have to do those things.
3 - I have noticed more lag since upgrading, like half a second when changing pages and stuff, not a massive deal but again it wasn't like that before, is it because ICS is more ram hungry and that's just way it is? I have noticed a lot more ram being used since upgrading, and when I goto task manager and close apps it will say for example '12 applications closed' and then I go straight back into it without opening anything else and it will say '15 apps closed'...Again, this never happened with Gingerbread.
Anyway, any advice appreciated.
Thanks

I updated it via the official software update on the phone, it popped up and asked me to update and I did.
Don't worry about it... We aren't dealing with rocket science.. Here in xda we have lot of experienced advisors who have created "how to" threads in development section. Just find the stickies in that forum you can find Dr. Ketan's guide about flashing roms thru PC Odin. It's zero risk. Anyone can do that. That would definitely solve your problems.
Here is the thread..

Thanks, will take a look and see if it helps.
Sorry I am bit thick but didn't really understand a lot of it haha.
Found out today as well that since upgrading to ICS I can no longer send or receive mms and my GPS has stopped working! Great. Got an ace phone and now can't do the most basic of things, and apps keep crashing since updating too.
I noticed a lot of people have similar probs to me from reading about, the phone updated to version 4.0.3 while a lot of people who don't seem to be having the probs have 4.0.4 but the Note won't update to that.
Really annoyed, and the battery is just ten times worse on ICS for me, I went to be with it at 100% and woke up and it was at 70% with everything turned off!!!
As I said I am not phone savvy but with all these probs I am not happy and might take it to a shop to see if they will downgrade back to GB which I was very happy with as not sure what to do...Can't send or recieve mms's, gps not working, laggy, very poor battery drainage, when I get a text and read it the number icon doesn't leave the messaging icon plus more.
Not happy, feels like I have a basic phone that I am paying top price for!!
