Bootloader Wars - LG Optimus 2x

In the fall of year 2012. LG has finally released long awaited Ice Cream Sandwich update for it's former flagship, Optimus 2x. Short after, young warrior named wkpark cracked the new, locked ICS bootloader for this device. That is the day when Bootloader Wars begun. Lot of Optimus 2x users were eager to see that if LG made a proper job with it's official ICS. First custom stock ICS roms begun to emerging, and more and more users were converting on new, unlocked bootloader.
In meanwhile, developers on the old, GB bootloader didn't fell asleep. Official CM10 came out, there were even few attempts to bring stock ICS to old bootloader. But all ICS and JB roms on old bootloader had a critical flaw named 'call bug'. Because of that bug, even more users started using new instead old bootloader. But all of those who wanted to taste Jelly Bean on O2x were forced to stay on old bootloader. O2x community was separated in two fractions: ones that uses new bootloader, and the other that uses old one.
After some time in stalemate position, things have started to develop further. One member from notorious group The Penguins of Madagascar, pengus77 succeeded to boot up CM10 on the new bootloader. With it's brilliance, he brought the advantage on the new bootloader side. That impact cause a massive troops crossing towards new bootloader.
Another inversion occurred when marsgod fixed the infamous call bug on the old bootloader. It gave the new light for old bootloader users and developers. So, one can say that we're again in stalemate position. Which side will be victorious? No one can and won't predict... only time will tell.

I hope no one will bi offended with little war story I wrote above. If someone find it offending, or wants that I remove his nickname from it, feel free to PM me.
Point of this thread would be to see how much users are on new bootloader, and how much of them uses old one. I'll make poll about that. Also, I would like to hear why someone choose the one bootloader or the other? What are advantages over the other in your opinion? And are you ready to change bootloader again if the community will choose one way...
Also, since this is bootloader thread, I hope that people will stop spamming threads in developers subforum with posts such as: my bootloader is stronger than yours etc.
Let the battles begin! And please, don't start to offend other users because of their bootloader choice. Let's keep it nice and cosy.
And sorry if my english is not good enough, and some sentences sounds funny.

I am currently on new bootloader, but as soon as cm10 without wifi drain is available, I'll switch back to good ol' bootloader

I'm on the new bootloader since stefan's v28E stock ICS. I'm happy with it, especially after pengus77 managed to get CM10 working on new BL. Currently using tonyP's PA with penguses kernel. I think it's nice combo.
About old bootloader... there isn't any stock ICS which is a minus. Official CM10.1 is still to buggy for me to use it as daily driver. CM7 (for stability and speed) is the only thing that would make me go back to old bootloader, and somehow I don't want to go back to GB. And CM10 on new BL seems to be enough stable and fast.
But if (when) one day CM10.1 become stable, and if whole community starts to roll back, I wouldn't mind another BL change.

I prefer to be with the new bootloader, because there are many ROMS that are becoming the new BL.
Greetings.

I dont even understand why people ***** about not have old bootloader version, why bother fixing all the issues with the old one when the new one works, its just they are too lazy to flash the new bootloader. The new bootloader is there for a reason.

Base on the same source new bootloader i don't have slow charge issue at least in mine case. Old bootloader the charging are endless hall for me.

I have been on the old bootloader and charging is absolutely fine since over a month. I will stick with RC and official CM, who else can give us daily bug fixes besides cyanogenmod. As for device apecific bugs, I am sure we will have kernel fkx by pengus.

Exactly my point, why move to a new BL when I am going to run CM 10 only which is only officially supported on the old BL.

Another thread about that?
This will lead into an android vs apple fight, where the loudest people are the ones with the lowest knowledge about what they're talking about.
Fact is: Both bootloaders don't suffer from the callbug and can be considered totally stable for a daily use.
Some people have a slow charging bug with the old one - I for myself never suffered from that with my Nexus 7 charging cable - so try not to use a cheap usb cable.
So choose whatever you want for whatever reason you like and stop telling others what they should do.

AW: Bootloader Wars
I am on new bootloader because of penugs. But actually who really cares? Changing bl is thanks to the AIO really easy. So my decision is not about the bl but the roms. I will choose the roms I am interested in and if I have to change the bl again it doesn't matter. I think this discussion about bl is nonsense.

I don't see point to move to new bootloader.
I am on tonyp's PA, pengus Kernel, and everything is working, no slow charging etc.
Also on CM10 everything was ok.

im on new BL:fingers-crossed:

Really? I shall try that one then! Because official CM10.1 is buggy as hell lately... I've been getting SoD's, which I never had, gTalk video is dead (even though apparently there's a flashable zip to correct that), I've had the charge bug (with an original blackberry charger... so I don't think it qualifies as cheap crap usb cable), the phone feels laggier than normal, voice recognition fails miserably... the list goes on...

those reporting about "slow charging" bug, need to know if you charging with screen ON or OFF. i am on old bl and with screen on via usb connected to the pc, slow charging (15%hour) but maybe cause screen is on with autobrightness. with screen off i can get 25%hor, so i do not think it can be considered "slow charging"....could any more confirm this "slow charging" bug or just "screen on with charging" bug?

Yop, I tried CM10.1 too before PA, it wasn't smooth like CM10 or PA and other roms, I think it's too soon.
I had slow charging with earlier CM10 builds with SU660 source codes, but it was only on one build.

The work of rc / the whole group behind CM is beyond great... but I cannot help but wonder the future is somewhere else than old bl...

I'm on a new bootloader, but I prefer, cm roms, but cm10 and cm10.1 is fine with new bl.
I belive, old bl, is OK for thistime, I just want a newer cmw, and newer bl

You're asking in the wrong place mate, go and talk with some LG representatives or in their forums (if they have).
O2X have ICS already, look for CM9 (CyanogenMod9) and try it, is in beta though not everything works and problems are to be expected.
Finally; dude this is NO freaking yahoo answers, twitter or facebook so stop spamming with threads.

I ve naively installed cyanogen 9 with ics after going in loops and not being able to find simple information on front camera functions and why it is not working with skype.
welllll, let me put it this way
I would not recommend the above mentioned rom to my worst enemy
the half baked thing may be ok for people who are developing these things but for normal users it is just plainly and simply a big heartache , and apart from few different coloured user interfaces there is nothing that a normal user could call useful or good for everyday operation of the phone.
I lost my contacts at least 10 times in the span of 3 weeks that it is installed,
it restarts randomly, just sitting there on the table and next minute you notice silly blue starting animation twirling around,
video camera does not work,
normal camera works but freezes as soon as you try to install some other camera apps,
gallery freezes from time to time,
default music player does not work, I could only play music from es file explorer,
gps apps do not work or work randomly, you can not rely on them if you go somewhere.
hooking to free wi fi hot spots is a nightmare,
and this is just the start of my problems.
I really cried once after the phone just decided not to work out of the blue showing logo screen and not much else.
So, if you want your phone doing most of the normal things, DO NOT install untested half baked software lingering around.
Install them only if you understand inner workings of android system and can fix things that go wrong daily on the fly, because, I guarantee, things go wrong with this ROM when least expected and when you really need your phone.
Im currently trying to understand or for someone to explain to me how to return to gingerbread version because Im at my wits ends with this cg 9

thanks for info, I had a look into nvflash and one of senior members on these forums have recommended to be very careful when using it so Ill stay clear from that
and as I learn more about android system Im staring to realise that most of this so called development and upgrading is trial and error and should not be performed or used by everyday smart phone users.
Mu mum has lg p500 which has stock gingerbread upgrade on it and the phone is rock solid , not missing a beat for over a year, everything working perfectly .
I bought my phone because of my mums experience but made a huge mistake by thinking that upgrading android system is as easy and simple as you would upgrade a windows system.
Well its not that complicated - but a little bit more work than upgrading windows.
but in the end you can always restore the original system - like windows
Nvflash is not that complicated if you just read all the steps a couple of times. I have done a nvflash a couple of times and has worked fine for me every time.

Weaker support from DEVS for optimus 2X ?

ICS arrived ,source code as well ... why nothing is happening in terms of new ROMs, kernels etc. ... Where did our developers gone ???

You can blame the no audio bug for that. It's so random and at the same time crippling that no further development can begin until it's taken care of.
New and better phones probably, and with the persistent call bug getting the way i wouldnt blame them.

I wouldn't call support weak... yes it has diminished since last year but that's true of many handsets - some devs sell or give away their old ones and move on to brand spanking new models (especially at the end of a contract). Plus, LG's reputation is making things worse.
Ricardo Cerqueira is still hard at work on the official CM10, and we have lots of people making modified versions of stock ICS or even CM10 derivations. Just not as many as during the CM7 days, but again, that should not be a surprise for any phone.

That is only part of the problem, and not the biggest part, IMO... See, the stock ICS doesn't seem to have this bug, plain and simple. At least, I have yet to see a single report of it on a clean stock V30A. However, all custom ICS/JB ROMs that currently exist use either non-original bootloader, or the old GB partition layout, or both (you can also add a custom recovery to this equation). If someone would create a custom ICS ROM based on the new partition layout AND the new original bootloader, I am pretty certain it would be free of this particular bug. The problem is that the new bootloader is locked. Can someone crack it to unlock? I hope so, but so far the only unlocked bootloader by wkpark actually comes from SU660... ArCee and the CM team are trying to make it all work with the old BL and partition layout, and the other devs either follow suit (take a ROM by tonyp and Harsh as an example), or trying to make something based on the new partition layout, but with an unlocked SU660 bootloader. What I am waiting for is someone capable of unlocking the new original bootloader from P990 V30A.
I am not a dev, so it's just my uneducated opinion, but the logic here is really simple: the in-call audio bug exists only when you introduce non-original components...
xalix -- as regards to a "weaker support", I am disappointed about it myself... It doesn't mean I am complaining, because I just can't expect, let alone demand something from any developer -- they will do what they can (and what they want to do), in their due time. But yes, there is not a lot of activity right now, for a number of reasons. You are not the first to bring this up, some people already commented on it. Some good developers, like Topogigi, moved on to other devices (and some are probably planning to), some just left XDA (Stefan is gone, and he was one of the most active contributors when it comes to stock-based ROMs), some don't have enough expertise in particular areas (Carburano has been making wonderful DM ROMs, but he is admitting it would take him time to get the kernel tweaking going without others' help)... All in all, it's kinda slow now, yes. Frankly, I am not the biggest fan of CM ROMs (just couldn't get myself to like CM7, even though some people swear by it, or unofficial CM9 varieties), and would much rather have a tweaked stock as opposed to a CM, no matter the version. So, I am waiting for some progress, but I am not holding my breath at this time... Good thing is that the official stock V30A is working quite well for me, so I am just using my phone without problems, all the while waiting for some nice stable ROM...

Yes, unfortunately I agree with you.
Stephan went out of xda because his fight about commits, and then topo, who was following stephan's work, sold his o2x. Then the kernel source was released and until now not a single stock rom with custom kernel compiled with p990 sources.
It's very sad. I would love to see just some gueste_ICS, but sometimes I think that people are more interested in following the rules than making it work.

I don't understand why but devs still love this phone. So no point saying weaker support. Its the weak support from LG. And, the bootloader can be unlocked. We just need the ramdisk source and we are good to go

Since Stefan has gone i to miss Gueste_Ics im still using Stefans V28E as a daily driver, its a best rom i have seen no lgas no audio bugs, works smooth, i don't understand 1 thing as still the audio bug is there in CM10, we should give time to RC to fix the audio bug, but till then why the dev is not trying to use AOKP or building the custom modified stock rom with a custom kernel as the source are out, from past 1 year we are waiting for LG to release ICS and source now both are out but we are still waiting, don't know how much we have to wait more.

New or old bootloader

I opened this thread for the dev section to stay clean (espacially the fixing the call bug section).
All discussion about using which bootloader should go here.
At the moment im on new bl, but i wont mind switching back. I noticed a few things, since im on new bootloader.
Especially battery live has increased considerably, even without much kernel side optimization on pengus 26.12 rom (correct me if there were battery optimizations done on that rom)
Additionally there is an easy way to activate swap. this is quite useful, because photospheres are working well with swap on.

in that rom, pengus77 implement some batery saving wifi related.....
Yes sure, so with wifi up for 30 mins a day i got an uptime of about 45 h. for me it was better than on old (around 30h with slight wifi usage). but this may not be related to bl at all.
what i am wondering is, if there are some binaries linking to the new partitions? if there are, we should notice a different behaviour between old and new bl. maybe we can find some differences

I started this thread because many threads are filled with comments why to move to new bl, get back to the old one etc.etc., so this thread is for discussing these things.
I think its quite hard to decide, which bl to go for. Many are arguing the old one is better since it is standard cm. I think its also valid to argument, that the new bootloader is the stock LG bl and its easier to switch roms if on stock LG 30A/B or have stock mod roms installed, so if cm would use the new bootloader, switching between upcoming roms (stock mods and LG) would be much simpler.
Do you know if the stock LG 30A/B is taking advantage of the swap partition?
I don't know anything about swap partition, I see that original stock LG 30B with locked bl and without root is extremely smooth and fast.
I'm using it since last Christmas and am very happy even if few minor bugs are still on.

I must admit that I am working on that but I'd prefer you to be patient in this area
For experience of 4.2.2 we need many requirements, ex:
unlocked BL
A new kernel (for bugless roms)
Enough knowledge for cooking kernel(we need to partition internal memory{for heavy 4.2.2} which was not necessary on gb)
Jtag tools (cooking kernel is a sensitive progress & hard bricks is so regular)
& just some developers have the knowledge & tools for cooking
#& I'm pretty sure if a recognized developer cook that kernel there will be a lot of roms for working on it

Addiction

I think I'm addicted to flashing ROMS. I've flashed just about everyone I can find for my T. Even when I get settled with a ROM I truly like (Hybrid/ CM 10.2) I think to myself 'oooh, I'll just try that one with a different kernel on the off chance I can get 4 minutes more battery and a speed increase that can't be registered with the human eye.'
I'm now checking XDA more than I check Facebook on the off chance that some genius like @tilal6991 has posted a semi-stable 4.4 build.
I only rooted/ unlocked bootloader 4 weeks ago. I feel I've come a long way!

I only rooted/ unlocked bootloader 4 weeks ago. I feel I've come a long way!

I think I'm addicted to flashing ROMS. I've flashed just about everyone I can find for my T. I am rooted with CWM recovery (Commonly Weak Recovery) but I am still addicted to flash about every girl I can find. Even though I get settled with one I truly like, I think myself 'ooooh, I still wish I could try the one with the different eye colour or shape.

Flash addiction is a difficult to cure disease. Welcome to our sick club x)
Thank you! It is nice to know I'm not alone. I'm quite certain that I'll be buying my next phone purely on how many roms/kernels are available for it.
I had the same problem with my Xperia Arc. Pretty annoying sometimes when my phone didn't work properly when i needed it hha. But it was fun.
Weird thing is that i don't feel the need to do the same with this phone, i feel like the last jb firmware Works perfect and i don't have the need to mess with it. I rooted this phone a few months ago but it resulted in a performance decrease. So i.haven't felt the need to root again since then.

hahhahahah...so true! I love your message!
i used to be exactly the same i have calmed down a lot now i used to flash a rom at least once a day even if it was one i had used a couple of days ago just to see the difference the rom i am currently using makes if any or i would grow tireless knowing i have the ability to flash new roms but was not doing so .... i bricked a few galaxy ace's in the early days when i didn't know what i was doing and thought i could skip steps etc but once i knew what i was doing there was no stopping me i became that addicted i was flashing my friends phones with different roms too .... i have calmed down a lot now flashing only 3 - 4 times a week instead of the 7 - 100000000000000000's of times a week
(100000000000000000's is not literal but just a way of expressing countless amounts of times)
i think i have had almost all JB roms running on my T at least twice now i flick between omni, honami v5, and keep trying the 4.3 version of pacman from buildbasket waiting for a stable release .... honami is my daily because i get to use doomkernel and OC and its got enough tweaks in it to make me feel like im not stuck on boring stock rom lol for me im always looking for functions and OC and unfortunatly unless you ar on stock OC just isnt there .... sure on one of the AOKP projects you can OC to 1.7 but thats a whole 0.2 less than on a stock with doomkernel might not sound like much but it can make a difference also doomkernel comes with governors that are tweaked for dual core again something that is missing from CM AOKP etc ....... hopefully omni will resolve this issue for me and i can spread my wings a little once they have a few more settings and OC / governors are fixed up
I think I've flashed every ROM on XDA at least three times. Just in case I was missing something. The odd thing is that almost every time I flash a new ROM, I think it's better than the previous one. Which is mental. I must have flashed Rimmer's MIUI ROM 6 times. Every time I flash it I love it because it's beautiful. Then 12 hours later I get annoyed at having all the apps on the homescreen as I like it to be minimal, so I flash another ROM.
Two days later I flash it back because it's beautiful. And on and on.
*sigh*
Normally I use either peetr_'s Hybrid ROM with Doomkernel, or CM 10.2. I find Hybrid with the kernel OC is snappier, I find CM 10.2 to be smoother. These are the two I return to on a regular basis. I always feel like I'm cheating on them, both with each other and with any of the other ROMs. Again, this is mental!
Very excited for when the T gets 4.3 and we get a kernel that can be OC!
Also, I like the XDA community. Every seems nice and chilled. Generally.

im not always nice and chilled i get annoyed at noobs who ask things that have been answered hundreds of times or state something as a fact when the rest of the world know it is something completely different but i try to keep a lid on it although im sure it hasnt gone unnoticed when i have let off the steam lol .... MIUI is a really tasty rom and is real nice but i feel like i am back on iOS too much with it ... all the greatness of android with all the rubbish of iOS lol and if you install another launcher it just isn't the same the launcher was designed for that rom so why put a new one on there when there are lots of other roms to try ..... i love the honami rom like all roms it has its limits and its bugs and its by far not the quickest one out there but it serves most of my needs out the box i just wish somebody would fix up pacman rom on 4.3 had repeated problems with it not restarting instead going into bootloop after installing roms .... i will openly admit i don't know everything as i can not build my own rom i wish i knew how as i would gladly take on building pacman rom 4.3 .... anyway enjoy your T flash until you discover that magic rom .... it might even be 4.4 once they have that up and running smoothly .... once omni gets its features that will almost certainly become my daily but its just a little basic for my needs at the current time lol .... if i can help out in any ways just give me a shout i might be able to help if not im sure somebody else will be able to between the who communities collective there is a vast amount of knowledge to be tapped into

I think it was caused by greenify but i'm not sure.

I had this impression regarding Greenify, especially since the auto-greenify feature is implemented. I can't imagine that rooting would slow down the phone.
Actually my V's stock ROM is a very good compromise in between performance, stability and fluid use. The 4.12 is rock solid and virtually lag free on my device. Well I flashed Honami Experience, but that is stock based.
Yes, it is very hard to resist this addiction ..I even infected my GF. She have Galaxy mini (terrible display) with CM10.1 some mods ..still better than stock sammy ROM.
Before Xperia T I have ACE 2 and I hated that lack of ROMs on this phone. So , after 5 months with this phone i bought T. and now I am in paradise .
Almost every day a CM or Miui update and now i flashed OmniROM from Tilal.. What a great feeling with 4.4.
Thanks OP for this Rom, made me smile
In truth, I have gone completely the other way, I used to be a flashaholic and flash new roms daily, it started with the X10 and i then bought an Xperia T off the shelf just so I could unlock the B/L - having played with everything there is to offer on here for the last year I finally trailed off flashing and the other day I flash an official stock Rom and re-locked my bootloader so as to get official 4.3 through SEUS or PCC
lol

lol I was just about to do the same thing when tilal released his 4.4 OmniRom. It's excellent. Now, I'm not trying to suggest you come back to the darkside, but it's well worth a flash...

I know, right? This is the very first phone I own that hasn't been flashed or rooted even. For the very first time, I haven't felt the need. Actually, that's saying something for Sony. Kudos to them!
Now back to eagerly awaiting my 4.3 update...
