Novacom on Windows 8 - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone successfully installed CM9 or 10 onto a TouchPad while running Novacom on a 64-bit Windows 8 platform?
My buddy just gave me his TouchPad to install, and for some reason I can't get the command line for Novacom.exe to work properly.
I've dropped the Acmeinstaller's into the BIN folder - the same location as novacom.exe. Every time I run the command, I get an error of "unable to locate device".
Nothing.
Anyone out there had any success on Windows 8 with novacom?
--McBean

It runs fine on 32 bit windows 8.
What bin folder, and where exactly is it located ?

I have done it find on 64bit Windows 8 with the novacom driver and acmeinstaller3

On 64-bit Windows 8 Enterprise, the Novacom SDK/PDK is installing to the following folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\HP webOS\SDK\bin
Notably, there's no more Palm Inc. folder, so I'm assuming I drop the acmeinstaller files into the same folder as novacom.exe (which is the bin folder above).
I'm using the full SDK that HP provides: https://developer.palm.com/content/resources/develop/sdk_pdk_download.html

I would suggest you run this https://www.box.com/shared/9fa9a63ffc3c4b5531a6 which is the 64bit novacom installer for windows which should create your Palm, Inc folder and then copy your acmeInstaller there .

That's exactly what I ended up doing to get things working. I just hadn't gotten back here to post the update. After poking around that first night, I found the installer, and it properly installed the novacom files and folder structure with the Palm Inc. details.
Once that was installed, the command line details worked flawlessly.
Thanks for the help!

Your welcome glad you got it sorted . Now the fun begins .

The box download not working, any other link?

ACMEinstaller issue

Been having issue trying to get ICS on my Touchpad..
Finally got to the stage where I have WebOS doctored, Full Wiped WebOS.
Now having a issue with the cmd script to kickstart the process.
Coming up saying The system cannot find the file specified?
I have created the folder in Root of touchpad put both moboot and ACMEinstaller in that folder.
What have I done wrong / missed out?
Please help
EDIT: Oops wrong section, Mods please move. Sorry
Before you run the command, copy the AcemInstaller to your novacom path .
So if you're in Windows open a CMD prompt to "C:\Program Files (x86)\HP webOS\SDK\bin", make sure you have AcmeInstaller in that folder, and run:
Code:
novacom boot mem:// < AcmeInstaller
P.S I'm 64bit OS so yours might just be "Program Files."
This may be too simple, but are you trying to use ACMEInstaller or ACMEInstaller2?
You need to use ver 2 for ICS
And Linux Newb, ACMEInstaller does not run from Windows. It's supposed to be on the Touchpad, which is where it needs to run. Novacom is simply the interface from your computer that tells the Touchpad to boot ACMEInstaller2 into memory. No files are transferred between computer and TP during the installation process (that is to say, after you've copied the files to the TP initially)
Jay, can you elaborate more on what your process was? We need some more details, such as:
1. Was the TP in USB flash mode?
2. Are you sure that novacom recognizes the device?
3. What did you name the folder where you placed the files?
Some more info will help us help you.

Nah, LinuxNewb is correct ACMEInstaller file should be in SDK\bin or Palm, inc folder either place will do.There is no need for it on the TP.
ps. a related post is in TP General section now.

Help! Trying to Root and stuck

Okay. I am stuck and frustrated like crazy. I have a touchpad that i am trying to root. I have tried the universal novacom installer and it fails. I have tried web os doctor but that fails as well. I put the tablet in editing mode, then hold the volume up button while pluggin in the tablet to my computer and that puts it into usb update mode or something like that. I start the webos doctor and it gets to 4% and the tablet shows the HP loga and all of a sudden the computer looses connection with the tablet so it stops. What do i do? I really want to get this going but am hitting walls left and right. I have ene tried it on my old laptop that is running Windows XP. I can either use my XP laptop or my Windows 7 computer so anyone please gimme some answers. I probably left out some info so please ask. If anyone wants to call me thats fine by me. Thanks

Have you put the touchpad in developer mode? To do this, go to the just type line on the webos home screen and type "webos20090606" without the quotes. this will allow you to continue. If you would like me to assist you in depth, I can be reached via email at [email protected]. Additional help can also be found at webosnation.com in their forums

I have copied acmeinstaller2 to the plam, inc file as well as copied the novacom.exe file to the location of acmeinstaller2. Any help is appreciated

There is a space after < ie // < ACMEInstaller2
Have you installed novacom correctly as the novacom.exe file should in the Palm, Inc folder when you open it along with along with a folder called novacomd and terminal and that is where you should put ACMEInstaller2 and for safety's sake ACMEUnistaller .
Hope that helps.

First of all thank you so much for replying. I appreaciate it very much. Now, i have novacom.exe , novacomd , and terminal in this folder. I tried the command prompt like you said but it couldnt fine specified folder.
My ACME installer 2 is showing to just be a file and my novacom.exe is an application is that correct? If not would you happen to know where i can get the correct files? Thanks agian.

[Q] MyPhoneExplorer and Cyanogenmod 10.1

Has anyone got MyPhoneExplorer to work with a Cyanogenmod 10.1 based ROM ?
I've only just got around to rooting my Incredible S, and haven't had chance to look into it much but it seems like you need to update the adb drivers that MyPhoneExplorer uses to make it incompatible?
Anyone had any luck with this?

Yes, I did find a solution in the end but I've forgotten exactly what I did now, sorry! Try this though (taken from the MyPhoneexplorer forums) :
1. Download Google's latest Android SDK: 32-bit or 64-bit.
2. Unpack the SDK or - if you have Windows Vista, 7 or 8 - simply open the ZIP file.
3. Inside the SDK locate and open the folder sdk -> platform-tools.
4. Locate the files adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll and AdbWinUsbApi.dll.
5. Open MyPhoneExplorer's DLL folder, which usually is C:\Program Files\MyPhoneExplorer\DLL (on 32-bit systems) or C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPhoneExplorer\DLL (on 64-bit systems).
6. Backup the files adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll and AdbWinUsbApi.dll which reside in MyPhoneExplorer's DLL folder by copying them to a safe location on your hard disk.
7. Copy the files adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll and AdbWinUsbApi.dll from the SDK folder to MyPhoneExplorer's DLL folder; these files will then replace the old files. Notice: Windows might ask you to enter the administrator password to perform this step.
8. Close all open folders and start MyPhoneExplorer.
9. Connect your Android phone or tablet to one of your computer's USB ports.
10. In MyPhoneExplorer choose File -> Connect.
11. On your Android smartphone or tablet confirm that your computer is allowed to establish a USB connection.

[Q] Linux Commands to install Evervolv 4.3

(Posted this over at Rootz Wiki and WebOSNation and it was suggested I post here for better response)
I am trying to use Knoppix to install Evervolv 4.3 onto my TP. Each time I open the terminal where the Palm,Inc files are, then enter the commands for installing, I get this:
[email protected]:/media/sda1/SAVE/pALM, iNC$ novacom.exe boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller5E
bash: novacom.exe: command not found
trying this, produces:
[email protected]:/media/sda1/SAVE/pALM, iNC$ ./novacom boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller5E
bash: ./novacom: No such file or directory
and this gets this:
[email protected]:/media/sda1/SAVE/pALM, iNC$ novacom boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller5E
failed to connect to server
I've re-installed novacom several times, updated the drivers and found the "palm-novacom_1.0.76_i386.deb" install in SynapticPM and that is what resides in my pALM, iNC directory.
There is no .exe or boot folder that I can see.
Novacom never did create a Palm, Inc folder at any time. I had to make a new folder with the name "pALM iNC" to double check this.
I also tried the suggestion over at WebOsNation here:
[Link removed due to newby status-check]
Here's the upshot of it, though-
[email protected]:/media/sda1/SAVE/pALM, iNC$ novacomd & novacom boot mem:// <ACMEInstaller5E
[1] 30138
bash: novacomd: command not found
failed to connect to server
[1]+ Exit 127 novacomd
Can I do something different to get this to work? I am totally new to TP, Android and Linux.
Thanks heaps.
TT
Novacom.exe is a Windows executable file and won't work on linux from the command line, afaik.
Could always use a windows emulator or a friend's PC =)
Cheers
Try this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2499959
It's easier on Windows.
EDIT:
Should work on KNOPPIX too:
Code:
http://www.toki.co.nz/mobile/2012/10/16-running-novacomd-on-debian/
Thanks, but, "File not found" on all those links for DL's.
I am wondering too why I can't get WebOSQuickInstall to work properly and thinking this may be a common factor here.
Whenever I go to install it, I get the "installing novacom drivers", then success, then cannot install as "no device connected" or something to that effect.
Could those all be related?
yedall vague
After double checking my Java install from suggestions over at Rootz Wiki, I discover I had not installed Java. I was using Iced Tea-Web Plugin for Java applets and thought I was good to go.
Plus, I thought I had installed it because a Java pkg kept showing up in Synaptic PM, but I went to Oracle and it couldn't be found.
So, after hunting for some info I found this:
://andrewelkins....n-oracle-sucks/
and following this I ended up with-
Cannot write to `jdk-7u51-linux-i586.tar.gz' (No space left on device).
download failed
Oracle JDK 7 is NOT installed.
I am running Knoppix on a 8Gb flash drive, and I will have to extend the data img before I try again.
Going on holiday for awhile, so won't be able to post back with results until I get back.
Thanks for the input guys.
Hope this helps somebody in the same predicament.

Worked for me although typing the java command (java -jar devicetool2.jar) didn't work as it couldn't find the jar file, but using the BAT file worked. Based off this post, I think the issue was I didn't type the path to the devicetool2.jar as I just followed the video. I typed the command from the directory the files were located in so not sure why Windows 10 cmd line didn't use the file without the path?

Thank you for reporting your success with the bat file and windows10. Ya got to be the path but i'm glad the bat worked, that's much easier anyway:highfive:
Thank you, It works like a charm!
Can confirm it still works in 2021/2022. Windows 7, JDK-7u80 (used old versions on purpose)
