3g or Wifi only - Nexus 7 General

Hey everyone, I am going to be buying a nexus 7. I am torn between the 3g version and the Wifi only version. Is the development better for wifi than 3g or is it the same for both?
Also the battery life, how do they compare?
Thank you very much for your for your input

Well you can look in the applicable development sections and see what's available. As for battery I would assume WiFi only would yield better results unless you have WiFi on while idle, then probably not much difference.
As for which is better, depends on what you need it for. WiFi works for me as I just tether to my phone. While it would be nice to have 3g built in, I couldn't justify the added cost plus additional data plan every month.

Thanks for the reply 95z28. I was looking at the development section and I only saw like 20 posts in total. But it seems some roms in the other sections do support tilapia as well.
I will be using the tablet mainly for commute so 3g might be worth the 50 dollars. We will see. Thanks again for your input.

Depends on your usage. If you want internet on the go, go for 3g. But if you want to customize to your heart's content, go for wifi version since most roms are made for them.

I was also on the same boat before finally going in for a wifi one. The extra money for 3g version is not justified and is on higher side. Instead I saved some money and bought a basic mobile which can tether well. I bought xperia u and it tethers fantastically. I get good download speed. Even if u traveling you can carry both mobile and nexus 7 WiFi together to serve your purpose. I also feel today tablet with 3g version is not successful as most of have at least one smartphone which tethers. I again insist go for a WiFi only preferably 32 gig one.

Also 3g version does not have tethering capability out of the box.

Thanks for the input guys. I do have a galaxy nexus but tethering from it would probably drain the battery. The other option I can do is just get a 3g modem and use that for the internet. Too many options We will see. Thanks again for the help

You should get a 3g tab instead, the battery is fine.

Better to have the 3G version and not need than to need it and not have it later.

If you already have a gsm phone with a micro sim, get the 3g nexus since you can use your phone sim in it when your phone dies.

If you are going to use it only at home or at places where you can grab wifi - I would go with the WiFi only.

It's my first tablet with 3G it's not disappointing
I had a TF101 (sold) and now I have a tf300t and a N7 3G Tilapia.
I use on the go, and it's really practical. The size is very good for use it with 3G
And about the development, look my index and you will see that you have 14 custom roms for the moment, and it's good.
So if you need a 3G connection (work or for the pleasure to be connect everywhere) take it with closed eyes.
If you need just at home, the wifi is good enough.
And it's a micro sim for the 3G version.
I hope this has helped you to your decision

If you have a data plan on your tether able phone then you would use it as a WiFi hotspot on the go instead of buying the 3g tab

Thank you everyone for your input. It was a tough choice but I finally went with the 32gb wifi only version because I got it for $100 cheaper than the 3g version. I didn't want to folk out extra for another data plan as data is expensive here in Australia.
Again thanks for the help

For US Tmo 4G DS7 users: Confirmed working using the link inside

Myself saw a lot of posts and people asking if it works for US Tmo 4G users.
Here is my confirmation
YES it works for me using the method below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286295&page=1
And a quick instruction is here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286295&page=8
Credit goes to author of the above two post.
I just confirm that, following the method above, my Tmobile DS7 is still able to use TMobile 3G network and my wifi is working as well.
But 4G network is not, or at least not shown at lower right corner as "4G", like I even care because HSPA is barely 4G. Just a faster 3G
what kind of speeds do you see though? noticeable decrease??
No. Not at all!

I downloaded the .zip from the first link and followed the instructions and can confirm that it works. However I do not have a data plan on my DS7, so I cannot confirm cell connectivity/speed. In froyo there would be a cell signal strength indicator, but I see none of that here. There is the option to receive cell data or roam.
This version of Honeycomb is a bit more refined than Honeystreak (no offense intended) there seems to be no issue with resolution or screen size in either orientation.
Now, to get all my apps back...
I dont kno how to use cmw.

Woah, if you don't have a data plan, then you DON'T know if hc will work with T-Mobile data. The fact that there is no wireless icon info ndicates it most likely will work on WiFi only.
Can you change the title of your thread? It is misleading. Yes, you can flash, but people want to know that their T-Mobile data will connect with the WiFi hc update.

Nor my thread - I am just responding to the OP. Additionally, the title says the ROM works with T-Mo DS7s, which is true. Just that I personally cannot confirm cell data.
If you read the first couple of posts, you'll see that the OP confirms normal cell service.

For the moment I'm holding on. Really, except for battery life, Froyo is working very well, and lots of apps work on this version. The OP indicates the manual update process does provide cell service, so I may go ahead and try. I always like the latest!
I'm going through some issues with dell right now. I bought this S7 from an XDA user, and apparently he bought it from someone else, because his name is not in the dell computer as the original owner. So I have to find out the original information so I can call them about updates after they transfer ownership.

Wifi Connected no Data??? Help

I just recently switched to ATT service from sprint still have to port the #'s.
I got 2 Infuses, 1 Thrill and a SkyRocket.
All is good except for the Thrill? I have the 2GB data on each phone and I am trying to have the kids (Thrill is for Kid) use WiFi at home to conserve data
use as we are used to unlimited with evo 4g's and evo shifts.
Now the problem! The Thrill Connects to my wifi (netgear WNR2000).
But is will not transfer data. It also times out and loses connection.
When on you tube it says there was a problem while playing
Web pages just won't load. Works fine on ATT network.
I'm fairly computer savy and have tried tweaking the router, different channels,
faster, slower speeds. WMM on and off. Nothing.
Try a different wifi network if it still has a problem I would probably take it back I hate my thrill because of how many problems I have with it

How to set Nexus 7 as a hotspot?

Hello everyone,
I've searched tons of different places looking for an answer but I couldn't get one...
My question is really simple (the answer however..), can I set my nexus 7 as a hotspot? My nexus is the 16GB version without 3G, so basically I want to:
1 - connect the nexus to a wifi network (done);
2 - share that network to other devices through nexus 7 (pending);
I've even looked at play store but the apps I've found aren't compatible with nexus 7.
TIA.
If you have your nexus connected to WiFi... Y not just connect the other device to the same WiFi....

Bingo. Wi-Fi their was never designed to act as a range extender. It is for using a cellular connection to act as a hotspot to provide a Wi-Fi for devices that could not otherwise connect. As such, any time tethering is activated, it will, by necessity, disconnect the device from Wi-Fi.

Buy a range extender, as what you're looking to do is contradictory to the functional design of hotspot apps.

I was looking for a similar option, but to use the n7 as a wifi router. The purpose this would serve varies between users. My use, would be so me and my kids could all connect together in games while going down the road with no internet. Hard to play multiplayer while having no connection. So, being able to use the n7 as a router would serve more uses than just extending range. Those answering should see the benefit of such an ability in a larger scope, and not just the reason the op needs.

No, unfortunately. There are special drivers needed as it shuts down the part of the cellular function in order to save battery so it's not as easy as just installing an app. Also, the new T-mobile wifi calling for ICS and JB is now part of the system instead of an addon app like the gingerbread one. Luckily I moved to a place where reception is good, because I used to have to rely on WiFi calling all the time.

Well that's a shame. I had heard that it was a driver/kernel issue. I'm using one of those CelFi repeater units from T-Mobile as I was an original BETA tester for the pilot project back in 2010. The unit works well but I recently move from Miami to DC and my area has HORRIBLE T-Mobile signal; im in a true dead zone. The repeater window unit only pics up 1 bar at best :/ and them tries to amplify it to 5 bars in the house which works well but the speed stinks. So I just use WiFi calling 99.9% of the time. This now has me worried about jumping onto one of these non T-Mobile branded Android phones.
Yeah, I know how you feel. The only hope is once the LTE network is up and running that they will be more aggressive in getting other phones, but I am not going to hold my breath.

without root you have to go off the tethering on your plan if you have it. dont go with the new tmobile unlimited plans because they charge for tethering and it's not as much as you can get now. there's really not anything similar to the note 7. the note 5 comes to mind but you had the note 4 so i'm guessing you didnt like the note 5. the international note 7 has root so you could go that route. it has bands for tmobile use.

tmobile uses Frequencies: Band 2 (1900 MHz), Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz), Band 12 (700 MHz).
the n930F uses:
LTE Cat9 700/800/850/900/1700/1800/1900/2100/2600 (Bands 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,12,13,17,18,19,20,25,26,28)
TD-LTE 1900/2300/2500/2600 (Bands 38,39,40,41)
so yes it is tmobile compatible.

I'll recommend a Nexus 6P, it's a gorgeous phone, and it's full pure android, so no problem rooting it legally from google.
no problem with bands, as it's multi band.
I'm using Wind (T-mobile partner), I too only buy phones that works with AWS bands
for the past few years, all phones are true multi-bands, so we no longer have issues with phones not supporting AWS
I too was considering the Nexus 6P before picking up the Note 7.... which I might either return or sell, if root is not available in the next 30 days

I understand why someone wouldn't need it but not knowing the use case of the guy asking the question it's better to assume all possibilities rather than just your own.
I for one cannot send a text message at home without WiFi calling connected. That may be a consideration for him to take into account when making his decision.
Also the area he lives in may not support volte

Titanium Backup, i've been using it for many many years.
The stupid Samsung "Smart Switch" (not smart enough) software doesn't work, it doesn't transfer your Apps/Games and safe games, or Apps data.
Which is why Titanium Backup is a must.
Then I also use use Droid Firewall, to manually control what comes in and out via. It's a great tool to avoid browser malware from being installed into your phone unexpectedly while browsing the web, or trying out some AD Bomb Infested Apps from Google Play.
Being able to choose what gets to connect to the internet, makes it easy to identify. Nothing goes behind my back without knowing which App is sending/receiving data.
There are a lot of other Apps I use which requires root, but they are of less importance. Apps like Widgetsoid, CPU Speed control, GPU speed control, SD card Boost, restart to Recovery Mode, and much more, basically all the Apps that can let you have full control over your phone.
Which is why most manufacture they do not like the idea of the "End User" messing around with their phone, because we are not "Owner" of our own phone, so we don't get to be "Admins"
That's the only nice thing about Nexus phones, you are guaranteed Admin / Root access.
But unfortunately as you mentioned, Nexus phones even the top of the line, are not always the best.
Samsung makes the best phone, but they are getting worse and worse at letting the "Consumer" do what they want with the phone.
