I'm using a data only SIM on my phone, so I'd like to disable SMS and cellular so that I cannot make or receive calls on the phone. I strictly want to use data only; ie 3g/LTE. Is this possible? If my phone thought it was a tablet...

You could simply tell your carrier to disable them.
assuming you are rooted, you could use titanium backup or similar to freeze the phone and messaging apps. That would prevent them from running and possibly free up at some ram as well.

Sometime correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't disable cellular because that's where you get the data from.

I think he meant cellular data. you can disable voice calls without disabling cellular data

I'm a complete noob at this, so bear with me.
I don't have a data plan with my Verizon xv6900, and I'd like to run Incubus Froyo from the SD card. How hard is it to disable any data apps in a full package like Incubus' so I don't get charged an arm and a leg for data usage? Is it just a matter of disabling wireless networks etc, or will some apps still try to use data without my permission?
I've successfully installed the stripped down version under the "How to use Android without a data plan" thread, but I'd like to use Incubus instead.
There is an option under Wireless & Network settings -> Mobile networks -> Data enabled.
If checked -> data works
If not checked -> data doesnt works
Simply like wifi -> checked, working / unchecked, not working
or you could use
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738612
it is incubus' froyo build just with out all the data using apps, you can also use and nbh editor to turn on ppp nostart this would turn off all data
Install android without simcard.
Then use wifi or sdcard to install apps that disable dataplan and delete all mobile networks, disable networks gernerally.

he has a problem there, he doesnt have a sim card or wifi
?? He does not have a data plan but no sim??? (didn read that ??? )
So the problem i see for him:
After first boot before he can change settings some apps try to use data connection which cost money on a "by call"-plan or smth like that. Apps like market widget etc....
So wouldnt it be enough to to make the first boot without simcard, so he can turn off all data settings?
If he needs an app he can try to download the .apk and install with the sdcard. (i know it works, but i dont know where to get apkĀ“s )

Ah okay.. its the first time i hear about this.. here in germany there are only simcards to use the phone, i think...
How does this work with cdma? How does the provider gets the information who you are?

basicly instead of a sim card all the phones have a serial # or ESN that is then tied to your phone number, this also means for switching phones you have to call and have the ESN changed instead of SIM switching
Incubus froyo without a data plan
thanks for the replies. I "think" i've got all the data disabled. I'll be watching my data usage for a bit just to make sure.

Sorry. I know this is old, but for anyone else reading this thread and trying to figure it out just call Verizon as ask for a "data block" for your line. It is free, and prevents their network from even allowing data to your device. This is a setting on your plan, so even if you flash/re-flash your phone a dozen times, data will not be sent and you won't get any charges - no need to change anything in the ROMs you flash. If you do not have a data plan then you should have this setting on your plan anyway.
I recently got a sim unlocked gs4active (i537). I rooted the device and used app quarantine to quarantine the files so that I can create a hotspot using my 4g signal. that process worked well. however since I got the fone I am unable to use any internet apps (eg google play fb twitter ) using my 4g signal. when using wifi these apps works as it should, however when using my 4g signal I always get the no connection error message. it should be noted that when using 4g signal I am able to use wats app and viber to chat but I cant send/ receive any sort of media (eg photos and music). can some lend some assistance on whats wrong here
Are you sure your apn's settings are ok? Are you talking about using a 4g lte network or a 3g network? I'm probably in the same situation as you since I have a sim unlocked sgh i537 and I'm using hspa with any issues.

Have you tried the obvious? Unquarantine those files and see if it works then - that way we'll know what end to start trouble-shooting in.
Good luck!

I was experiencing this problem before I quarantine the tethering provision file so I highly doubt quarantining this file was the cause of this problem
just to be sure I just tried un quarantining the file to see if it works ...... and it doesnt
try this :
go to settings- more networks- mobile networks- Access Point Names- then hit menu , then- reset to default.
and make sure your Mobile Data on phone is enabled.
wow!!! this works!!
thanks a lot ... now I have a perfectly working s4 active
Is there a way to only keep the Mobile Data but disable Calls and Texting on the Moto X?
Tmobile allows you to use you data plan internationally for free, but charges per text and call. I dont want to be charged for those.

You could try turning on Airplane mode, then enable just mobile data. I know that you can do that with wi-fi and bluetooth, but not sure if mobile data turns the cell radio back on. I think it would allow texts though. So, you want mobile data just for browsing?

That is correct. I want to use my Unlimited Data plan for using the internet while in Europe (Currently from US using Tmobile). I had tried to insert my simcard into a IPad but it gives me a message saying this Sim is not usable in this device. A tablet would have made the most sense, I am going to try and talk with TMobile about this later.
Just use a call blocker to block all incoming texts and data.
Actually, I know calls would go straight to voice mail....but I think you might still get charged for a text anyway.
Yeah...I'd buy a 2012 N7 3g. Cheap now and will do what you want.

I got a around 46MB OTA update today, it automatic started without any notification, and then it used 46MB from my data plan.
How can I stop automatic AT&T update (I have stopped automatic update in the google play for APPs)? I wish I can do it using WIFI when I am home.
Thanks very much!
Best

This AT&T update should not be taken against your data plan.
Swiping from dark side of Galaxy S5.

I think it used my LTE data coz there isn't wifi connection in my office, I also checked in the "usage manager", it shows there is a 46MB usage in the data page.
Is there a way to stop this?

Check by USSD code. From keypad dial *3282# and then you will receive text message with how much data was use. In data usage manager data is inaccurate because is measure by device and not always what you really use.
It's going to show on your phone but it's not going to count against your data plan when you're billed.

Mobile data switch greyed out while on call. How can I turn on mobile data while on call?
what carrier?
T mobile
My data works when on a call

So you turned on the mobile data switch before or during a phone call
I was on a call earlier and trying to access the mobile data switch during the call but it greyed out.
what are you trying to do? mobile data switch??
You can already talk and use the internet at the same time. No setting should have to be change. I never had to change any settings on any of my tmobile phones for this to work.

I'm unable to turn on mobile data during a call. It's greyed out. I'm able to to turn it on while i'm not on a phone call. My s7 edge works fine.

what iam asking is does it matter? is your internet working while your on a call?
Its possible its just an OS update that stops your from toggling data while in a call.
I just tested mines and its grey out while your on a call but there is nothing wrong with that. No reason to turn it off or on while on a call.
But what iam saying is it should be grey out and all works as it should.

Your calls are routed over data now so the toggle is greyed out so you don't accidentally disconnect yourself. Your data should work while you're on a call. It may be slower though as your voice call will be using a portion of your bandwidth.

Yep. The T-Mobile Note 7 does not give a toggle to turn off/on VoLTE. It's on by default now so what was said is true .. no turning of mobile data while on a call or .. no call.
