Is there a way to only keep the Mobile Data but disable Calls and Texting on the Moto X?
Tmobile allows you to use you data plan internationally for free, but charges per text and call. I dont want to be charged for those.

You could try turning on Airplane mode, then enable just mobile data. I know that you can do that with wi-fi and bluetooth, but not sure if mobile data turns the cell radio back on. I think it would allow texts though. So, you want mobile data just for browsing?

That is correct. I want to use my Unlimited Data plan for using the internet while in Europe (Currently from US using Tmobile). I had tried to insert my simcard into a IPad but it gives me a message saying this Sim is not usable in this device. A tablet would have made the most sense, I am going to try and talk with TMobile about this later.
Just use a call blocker to block all incoming texts and data.
Actually, I know calls would go straight to voice mail....but I think you might still get charged for a text anyway.
Yeah...I'd buy a 2012 N7 3g. Cheap now and will do what you want.

So, AT&T kills you on a monthly data plan, unlimited for $40 a month are there any alternatives for getting a monthly data plan or do I specifically need to go through AT$T for that service?
Also, I use the "No Data" feature which is awesome by the way to essentially turn off the data to and from my phone, I use WIFI. Someone sent me a text message the other day that I did not receive I assume because I have the data turned off on my phone, as planned.
Is there a way to get around this, t receive messages when connected via WIFI or is that specific to the data plan associated with AT$T?
TW,
u do not need to turn off your connection when using wifi. when you have wifi turned on and properly connected, all data usage will be through wifi so no charges. your phone calls and txt will still come through normally. you can call/email att to confirm, i did. plus you can also check your usage online and it will show no charges for anytime you are using the internet through wifi.

I can get sms through my web connection? I thought SMS came directly from my provider?
Is there a way to use another provider for data service?
TW,
I use Unlimited MediaNet for only $19.95.
That would be the best choice if you want to have data wherever you go for less then the DataConnect plan.
Well if you're without an access point that is.
I've been using it for a while now, and I use quite a bit of bandwidth a month, (IMplus / Tethering pretty much all the time) and it works great.

I've heard this before, I pay $39.99 for MediaNet unlimilted...so how do you get it so cheaply? The tethering can be done with ease but getting caught could encurr the wrath of ATT $$$$$ !
I'm sorry about that.
I'm using MediaMax unlimited.
Its unlimited Data /w only 200 texts a month.
I shoulda mentioned that. =/
Slayer6234,
I know I have the option of downgrading to MediaMax Unlimited online (account access) but I've contacted AT&T and they told me this is not supported so I'm a little leary to change it and have it cost me in the end. How long have you been using this? If it works fine I'll just downgrade and see what happens.
Thanks.
I've been using it for about 2 years now since I got a flip phone with a browser.
I've talked to AT&T about it and they do "frown" upon not using a dataconnect plan with a PDA but I've been using it with the HTC for 3 months and nothing has happened, plus I would just say that I have a flip phone that I can only use medianet on, and that I switch my sim to that from time to time.
The tilt will automatically connect/work with MediaNet.
The PDAconnect / Dataconnect plans will still get you on edge/3g, its just a fancy, more costly way of getting you there.
MediaNet will do the same... and you dont need a tethering plan with the tilt because, well, you have a tilt.
Slayer6234,
Thanks for the info. I'll give it a whirl.
I think I might no longer be confused ... MediaMax is still a service offered through AT&T (https://www.wireless.att.com/media/cingular_video_purchase) at a reduced rate...
So, you can't get an external data plan from another vendor for your phone although @ $20 bones I think that falls in line with everyone else's plans.
TW,
So im thinking of picking one of these up, and can buy from dell directly and get a pretty good discount through my employer. I am wondering if these are going to be like the galaxy tab and not be able to use a voice and data plan sim. I dont want to add a line, or go prepaid for the data plans. Any thoughts
The Streak 7 does not have voice calling, only VOIP. There are ways around it with Google Talk, but you will have to see the phone.apk thread and follow the lengthy instructions. For all intents and purposes though, the answer is no. The data plan from T-Mobile is 49.99 a month for UNLIMITED or 39.99 if you are an existing customer.
You are correct. Voice plans do not work on the Streak 7. You have to have a data plan. This was a major bummer for me. I use a prepaid voice plan. On my Streak 5, I could buy a day pass for data for $1.50. That doesn't work on the 7. Technical support said that the network detects this device as a data device because it sends a mac address to the network rather than an IMEI(?) number. So you must buy the weekly or monthly prepaid data plans to use data on the device. I use mine mostly at home, so all I need is the occassional day pass, but no can do.

It does also send an IMEI by the way, but it also sends the MAC address, just as all phones with internet capabilities do. If you open up the door on the side you will see the IMEI number for you device.
One big disadvantage of not having a voice and data line on it and them making it web only (webconnect) = NO ROAMING OF ANY KIND! It's t-mobile native service or nothing. It doesn't even work on t-mobile affiliates like i wireless. (who has aws 3g running in areas).
I buy this tablet to have internet access everywhere, but end up using the wifi hotspot of my hd2 when i travel. Grrr!
Im getting this delivered today, would it benefit me to put my Voice/data plan sim in it or keep the web connect sim in it?
thanks

Has anyone out thought of a switch for root users on 4g phones to disable 3g so you don't have 2 wireless radios for 3g and 4g running at the same time? If so, can someone name the app, or tell me where I can find the info on it?

I think if you disable the 3g radio you would have no voice or text. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

you're right. 4g is only for data.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
I'm not sure this is correct. On the Thunderbolt, you can switch it to LTE only, and it remains able to make calls and send/receive texts. Although perhaps that doesn't disable the 3G radio.
Radio Switch
Only reason this even came to my attention is because I had heard rumors about the Sprint users being able to disable their 3g radio and still receive texts and voicemails... So, I figured I would ask about it. I mean with dumbphones that weren't 3g how did those receive those functions without a 3g radio?
voice/text messages are on 1x while internet is on 3g/4g

Issue I see, is sometimes I'll lose 4g around here (GR area too), and if 3g was off, I wouldn't have data at all.

Than why when I'm on 3g, in a non 4g zone, when I go to make a call, the phone disables 3g?
Radio Switch
@sheatyj - I would have use for this though because I travel the country for work... Most places I go are all 4g (or at least Verizon claims them to be) so if I can disable my 3g radio, I can make my phone last a little longer... Also It will help with me having issues with my phone jumping back into 3g when I just had 3 bars of 4g.

Just enable Airplane Mode. That will turn everything off.
Once everything is off, just re-enable WiFi and/or Bluetooth if you want to use just that.
Hi, on my Moto x on Verizon, even when im on Wifi at home (usually a pretty good signal) it still searches and is constantly trying to connect to a Verizon mobile signal. The problem is that in my house we have a terrible signal (usually low 1x to emergency calls only) so when receiving calls or texts, the call either drops out constantly or never goes through, and i get texts hours later and sometimes when i send they never go through.
It seems that even though im connected to Wifi, its only using that for data and is using the mobile connection for everything else. On my GNex when i connected to wifi it would basically ignore the mobile connection at that point and use wifi for everything. It wouldnt even show if i had a 1x/3g/lte connection at that point. The moto x continues to show me what data connection i have on wifi. Is this how the moto x just works, or is this just some weird device specific or verizon issue?
Turn on airplane mode, then wifi. Airplane= no mobile data.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
That's how all android phones work. SMS and MMS don't use data (unless your using Google voice). Your GNex didn't ignore the wireless signal (there would be no way to route calls and texts without it). You can call Verizon and they will put in a signal booster for free.

also the signal booster will be tied to your wifi connection so now when you have a good wifi connection you should have a good signal. With the booster your texts and phone calls will not be going through your wifi network. The type of service verizon uses doesn't let them router phone calls and texts through wifi networks. I believe tmobile or some other brands have the ability to do this already but verizon doens't. Not the phones fault its the radios the carrier uses.

just complain enough that your signal is so bad that it is not usable in your house. You might have to call the I am going to cancel service hotline and say you will leave because you aren't getting service. Just complain some more. then ask for supervisor. complain some more. eventually some one will offer you one for free.
T-Mobile has that ability. That's the primary reason I have them for my backup phone (the cheap Lumia 521). I have that phone set to default to WiFi calling so while I'm at home it never uses the TMo network. Unfortunately, the Moto X does not support this feature.

Hello just got a U2, At&t, what Sims have people been able to successfully use on it besides the att&t? Would like to connect mine cheaply. Anyone tried Mint or Project Fi?
I just got today my U2 ATT unlocked, I put in an ATT SIM and a T-Mobile SIM and both worked, and both showing LTE, although ATT held onto LTE more often, T-Mobile went down to HSPA+ or HSPA as I moved around deeper indoors.

I've had Truphone for a year with no issues. It should work. I tried Ting and H2O originally but had the same issue of no data. Probably an APN settings issue.

I only have had my UB2 about 2 days and still learning, but know enough I think the Truphone incoming-centric cost structure probably is a good part of the solution. Thanks for advising Truphone works inside the UB2

Thanks for the Truphone tip, I got it and I been averaging about 2MB/day so 18c/day = $5 / month extrapolation, and so I'd struggle to find anything lower cost. What I learned is the LTE really drains battery life, about 25%/hour, vs 5%/hour on BT tether, so the idea I can spend all day out just with the UB2 is not viable so I'd be using for brief traveling light situations, popping down shops, walking the dog, that sort of thing. Around here AT&T is the best coverage. One thing i've learned however is the UB2 for some reason will lose the BT and Wifi connection and so connect to LTE so causing some demand, so I've had to disable cellular and manually enable when I intend to go away from the phone with just the UB2, that should lower my monthly cost to significantly less than $5 extrapolation.
My UB2 would be become more useful once AW2 and Android Pay comes out then it really becomes me single device to head to the local supermarket.
I use H2O Wireless for voice. Prepaid, minimum $10 for 90 days. Calls are something like 5¢ per minute, same for data & SMS. I turned data off, though, because the watch keeps hitting the data connection, running the balance down.

Right, what I also found the watch keeps hitting the cellular data connection, when there is no good reason, I'd be near Wifi all the time and at most it moves from BT to Wifi but it seems to not go to Wifi, it seems to go LTE if the BT is hiccup.
So the UB2's option for cellular is very dumb, it only allows on/off, I can't say, disable LTE for data but keep the SIM on for incoming calls. So that means I must take specific action when I leave the phone behind, which is to enable cellular.
I guess data is on, it's reporting on & I don't see a setting to turn it off.
I leave my phone on 24/7: cellular on, WiFi on, Bluetooth on, data on (apparently). But I sent a text message from a Google Voice account to my watch 5 minutes ago & the watch hasn't received it so I don't know. I don't want data on it, except WiFi, so it's not been a problem for me. Bill's about $3 a month & I have coverage everywhere so I love it.
Just checked & the SMS test message did go through. Didn't alert so I didn't know it until I looked for it. Guess the volume's down.

Yes, the APN couldn't be modified from the watch. I am not sure if there is a small tool so that we can modify it from the paired phone.
