Is it possible for the proximity sensor to go bad? When I was using my vivid, I had an otterbox on it, and I thought that was what was causing the issue. My wife wanted wifi tethering so when I got my Nexus 4, I wiped it, left wcx experience on it, and gave it to her. Now she's having issues with it too. Known fix?
Really how does a proximity sensor go bad, there's no moving parts!

I know it has only an on-off function it doesnt detect the distance so try putting your finger right on it in a call does it work?
I'll give that a try. It still works somewhat, I know the buttons will light up if you cover it for a couple seconds, just sometimes it'll shut off the screen during a call, sometimes not so much. I wonder if it's a rom issue

Use power button to end call in access ability settings.

As of this week, there's a creaking sound on my upper left side (of course, where else..)
Anyone else had similar luck? Was pretty happy with it up till now, well actually I'm mostly still happy with it.
I just assume I need to buy a new screen protector now if I RMA it right? Or do they give the same device back?
And does anyone know how the RMA process works if you bought from an Australian retailer?

They send the same device back if it is fixable but it might have a new screen on it

I used to claim i got a CBOK with no problem at all. Last 2 days the screnn lift appear. How did i notice it? I just got paranoid about problems on my N7. But now i realize that this thing is so tiny that its no a problemt at all. I will no brother myself because that kind of stuff. Love my n7.

Well I didn't care about my lift but now it creaks lol
But flawless apart from the screen issue, I've never had a problem with much flicker or speaker issues, only on 4.1, but 4.1.2 fixed for me.

I got my Nexus 7 three days ago. It seems like sometimes when it's charging and I pick it up, the screen turns itself on. But I can't seem to purposely reproduce this behavior and I'm wondering if maybe I'm just hitting the power button without realizing it. Likewise, once or twice it seems to have put itself into sleep when I set it down. Can anybody confirm this behavior?
Mine has done this with me as well. There was one guy who posted that it had happened to him, but it was to do with a magnetic case. I've not got round to getting a case for mine yet, and there have been times where I've picked it up, 100% sure i haven't hit the power button, and the screen has come on....
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
This has happened with me too, turns out it was coming on when I left it charging on top of a speaker... Sometimes the screen wasn't coming on at all even if I pressed the power button numerous times.

Funny...come to think of it, the auto-off happened when I set it on my iPad, which is in a magnetic case.
P.S. - Am I allowed to say "iPad" in this forum?

Well when my n7 was switching itself on, it was sitting on a pillow on my bed, nowhere near any magnets. And when it happened I manually switched the screen off, put it back down again, and was able to repeat it again and again. So unless my pillows are magnetic...

That's actually a very good idea, something along those lines, I'd need to bore her with a subject that won't immediately let her know that I'm taking the p155, but having just got my n7, I could maybe just start talking to her all the time about it and nothing else lol
Who would have thought you'd even get relationship (avoidance) advice here on XDA
Thanks!!!

My be your bed company is "magnetic"? kidding!
I got twice this effect when at bed. And I found it perfect to wake the device in the dark because the start button is not so easy to get and very often is opposite to your available finger!
I had that before, but not since I upgraded to 4.2 I think.
It's a really cool feature, I hope Google add it.
I had this happen a few times as well. Try putting your device to sleep and wiggling the USB cable where it plugs into the N7. If you plug the charger in while the screen is off, the screen will turn on. I know mine doesn't have a real solid connection and if I pick it up while it's charging, it will sometimes cause the cable to lose its connection for a second or so and then move back into position, causing the N7 to essentially think you're plugging the charger in. You might see if that's what's happening with yours as well. I figured I was the only one and it wasn't a big deal so I've just been careful about picking it up while charging or transferring data.

When it happened to me there was no cable plugged in, and I was able to switch the screen back off, put it down again, and pick it up and make the screen come on again. Definitely never pressed any buttons or had it near any magnets.
I think it was before I had upgraded though. Some people say this would actually be a nice feature, and until you remember that everywhere you take your n7 away from home its gonna be switching on and of all the time in your pocket/car etc it would be....

I fully agree, but this feature will and must only be for in "home" use. So not active when lock screen is enabled.
When I'm at home is the main time that I do need the screen lock lol, if I'm out it's usually in my pocket.. The auto screen on would be a good feature at home though, I'm just not sure how it could be implemented.
Oh, wait, I just thought of something It's entirely possible right now. I could use my nice new app called Tasker, and set it up to tell the screen to come on when it feels movement. What's more, if I want it to only happen at home, I can tell it to only work when GPS says I'm home, or simpler, tell it to only do it when I'm connected to my home WiFi network. Tasker is a cool app.

I just recently updated to the cm 10.1.3 final build and I've noticed that there is a red light that always comes on between the earpiece and the front camera... Not sure what it is or why it seems to be on all the time. Rebooting the phone seems to fix it, but by the end of the day it is back on. Any thoughts?

That red light is the proximity sensor (well, half of it, the receptor is next to it). Not sure what's causing it to come on in your case - there was a version of Viber that switched it on constantly a few months ago, but that got fixed in a subsequent release.
Cheers,
Steve.

I figured it was the proximity sensor. Not sure what is activating it though. I don't have Viber FYI. Is there an app that could tell me which apps can control the proximity sensor?

When I pull the phone away from my face to use the keypad or switch to speaker or end the call even, the screen doesn't turn on. I turned off just about all of the motion sensors in settings would that have something to do with/affect the proximity sensor?

Is anyone else experiencing poor proximity sensor behavior during calls? Proximity works great during sensor tests, but fails to turn screen on/off during calls correctly. Problem is identical across 3 seperate Note3 devices I've tested and oddly I get the exact same issue on Galaxy Mega.

Mine works most of the time. Every once in awhile it flakes out. Same on my note 2 but it was very very rare on note2. I am possibly thinking it might be these cases with fatter lips I've been using since there is so little choice for a great case. My diztronics tpu is awesome but sadly it doesnt fit proper with wireless charging cover and I ruined it trying g to mod it.

I'm not using a case, screen protector, or anything. Exchanged my device and a few days later the proximity sensor is failing 100% of the time during calls. It works flawlessly for everything else...just buggy with stock dialer.
Note 3 -- Tapatalk version [HORRIBLE.1x]
Maybe an app that is causing chaos. I had a speakerphone app bork my proximity sensor sensitivity.

Mine annoys the **** outta me, as soon as I make a call, phone in had, on table wherever it may be the screen turns off.
With this many people having issues with it, it might be an app that's causing it because testing shows the sensor works right?

I had the same proximity sensor issue on my first brand new N3. I think it was faulty from the start. when doing the sensor test, the screen would light up when you place your hand over the sensor, and stay light up when you move it away.
I even reset it to new a few times with the same problem. I got tired of the problem and did a warranty exchange. The new phone works as is. I also went to my local BB where they had a Samsung booth and tested all the N3s they had there. None of them had the proximity sensor issue. I believe it's a hardware problem.
Wow.
Man I'm having this problem also!
I had the same issue and requested an exchange from ATT. So far so good on the new one. Very frustrating issue!
I am having this same issue. Besides that and super high temps I honestly don't think this phone was ready to come out.

There's a separate setting in the phone app to turn off the screen during calls, and it's set on by default (I think). Could that be interfering with the sensor?

No, that's the setting to activate the proximity sensor during calls or not. Turning it off deactivates the sensor. Then you manually can turn your screen on and off during calls.

The touchscreen just stopped responding. Wouldn't work for almost 2 hours. Shut it off and let it sit and it eventually starting working, but it's sporadic, as some times I have to press the screen 3 or more times to do anything.

Nothing worked except using the s pen. It's like it over heated and shut the touchscreen down. Either way, I'm getting a replacement. I'm really kinda pissed about this.
