[Q] phone not recognized (either download mode or MTP mode) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
first off, i have searched the forums and i have googled my problem, but i think this is a real specific problem,
my phone boots just fine. but my bottom three buttons aren't working whie in software. i CAN go into recovery using the three button method. (using the home button, so it workes just fine) but as soon as i enter recovery the homebutton (and menu and back button) wouldn't work anymore.
so i thought; it is an software problem so a new rom should do the trick. at least it is a good guess.
problem being, the phone isn't recognized by my, and others, pc. whenever i connect the phone (phone "on", at homescreen) the phone starts to charge but the pc does nothing. it doesn't even show "unknown device". Also in download mode no luck. not recognizable.
Strangest part? if i start to connect, disconnect, connect, disconnect (etc.) the phone 20-30 times, there is a chance it will be recognized. this is only not the case in download mode.
i replaced the cable and reinstalled (and redownloaded) the drivers numbers of times, also i used different USB ports (USB3.0 and 2.0)
Hope you guys can help me out.

have you tried to toggle the usb debugging mode ?

Yes, tried that already. any other ideas?

bump, nobody an idea what to do?

tbh it sounds like the microusb port on the phone itself is dodgy. possible that the solder needs to be reflowed.

sounds logical, would it be possible to do this on my own? i have got a good bit of experience soldering. and is there anything i should know beforehand?
and the buttons, is it possibly in the software? or is there something else going on?
edit; it would be strange if the connector is dodgy, because every time i plug in the cable it starts charging, so atleast 2 pins are properly connecting

did u try to connect another phone ? or try to coonect it to another pc, maybe problem is in ur pc ?

Phone-PC brick with no working 3 button - options?

Hi all,
I was flashing between Jf6 and JH7 today, wanted to see if flashing JH7 via different methods would give me a 3 button fix. (If it did fix it then flashing via Kies mini didn't do the job)
Ironically it backfired when Odin froze and I flipped out the battery
(Hey, I've been at the dl screen before when it was doing nothing and it survived!)
I plug the USB in, I get the exclamation screen
Do it with volume keys pressed, still get it
Hold down the volume + power and the screen goes blinking between exclamation and blank. I've tried releasing power keys at each point in those screens
I even took a video incase I'm not doing it right. Odin is running in the background. No USB plug-in 'pings' from Windows, as you can hear.
Anything I can do?
btw my bat build date is 8/13.. that bad week
I'm in Australia (bought phone off ebay) so sending it back to the States will be a bit of trouble.. I'm hoping I can work something out with the ebay seller otherwise I'll buy another cappy and hope someone finds the jtag points I guess.
same here. no button combo method that previous worked is working now. :/
OP, did you see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
not working for me, but maybe it'll help you ... ?

You may also want to try removing and then reinstalling the Samsung USB drivers on your PC.
I've verified there is simply no USB device being registered no matter what OS, the phone is just sucking power.
@The_Bishop: Did see that, exactly the same as yours, plug usb in, get that screen
Anyone want to be awesome and send my Capppy back to Samsung on my behalf?
best method that never dies when i was in your situation......
unplug usb, turn phone off, then put battery in, turn odin on, now hold volume buttons ONLY then insert usb in phone, you will see download mode with odin identifying the port;
hope it worked ?!?!?!?
Believe me I have tried everything. There is simply was and still is no way to enter recovery or download mode on this phone. Its hardware locked!
a little off topic, but how do i find my phones "bat build date" ?
I had the exact same problem. If you do a battery pull.. hold down both volume buttons and plug the usb cable into the phone while it's hooked to PC then it bumps you into Download mode. I did the exact same thing you did and am running froyo at the moment.
Oh.. no power button.. just both volume buttons.

Done that. Exactly what happens in video. Both volume buttons down, plug in usb.. no response, just brick screen.
I had the same problem.. the phone didn't register USB.. have you rebooted the computer? I believe i did that at one point.

I did try once or twice. From another thread it was also said to disable driver verification on windows startup for x64 machines. which I also did.
Basically I want to hear from someone who:
a) has a captivate that could never enter dl/rescue via buttons, only adb
b) captivate didn't trigger a plug in 'ping' from Windows until they ??
FYI this is a Macbook Pro, and I booted into Win7 x64 Pro for flashing.
Hi I have the same problem..
What I did was this rooted with one click.. loaded Cognition 2.1.6 all was good..I saw the froyo so I thought lets try it. so opened up ODIN put it in recovery mode. with ADB could never get it in the button way.. it started to load and it froze. I didn't disable voodoo and IS THAT WHY I AM STUCK? I have tried every combo changed drivers computer will not see the phone.. is it a AT&T Phone
IS there anyway to fix it?? or can someone make a program to fix this? I would make a big donation if they did!!!
Thanks Forum!!
Yeah I had it in adb mode to enter download mode, maybe that is why it won't start back up.
I've now given the phone to a local mobile repair business, if riffbox or someone comes out with a Captivate rescue soon its probably as a end result of me
I sent mine back to Samsung as well. BTW, I have a battery from 2010.08.12 so I might be in the same boat. Wish I'd have used one of my OEMs to see if that made any difference, but I did not. :/
I have the same issue.
Rooted my phone through adb, which was fine. Couldn't get into recovery/download modes with hardware before then.
Now my phone is bricked, and not detected or even charging via USB.
wtf
If the repair shop cant fix it try this:
1.) Remove Battery, SIM Card and External SD
OR
2.) Press and HOLD VOL UP AND DOWN with USB inserted and THEN slap in the battery.
This worked for me, for some reason inserting the battery last did the trick.
Let me know if anyone finds a solution to this I have tried it all and my computer will not detect my phone. Has Samsung blocked this in there firmware?
Did you try what I posted above?
yep nothing if I could get it to detect in command prompt I could force it but it won't... the button thing didn't even work when the phone worked!
So ....

[Q] Captivate Bricked. No 3 Button Combo. PLEASE HELP

PLEASE HELP ME!
I was trying to flash back to stock but odin3 just sits at factoryfs.rfs
Read a different thread which said that you should unplug and replug into a different USB port. Tried that however got an immediate black screen.
The phone doesnt show the battery symbol when plugged into a charger.
If i can get into download mode I think I can flash stock with Odin3 because I changed the programs privileges to admin and turned compatibility mode on with WinXP SP2
Essentially NOTHING comes up on the screen, regular boot up is out of the question and I cant even get into download or recovery mode. 100% dead regardless of what i do.
I've tried the 3 button download mode trick. I held Volume down / up / POWER before plugging in the USB and Battery....I've tried everything and nothing is getting this thing out of a complete brick.
I've also read that you can make a wire and solder pins 4 and 5 of the micro wire with a 301K ohm resistor in between to simulate the 3 button trick...But im skeptical it'll work at all. (Going to try it soon anyways).
My question is.. What else can I try to get this to Download mode??
PLEASE HELP.
anyone ? any information is appreciated.
I have the same problem just like you.
I am waiting for the solution too.
As I know there was no way now.
u might have to try doing the solderless trick..ill reserach and see what i find though
Give the JIG (301k resistor between pin 4+5) more credit!
Here's a parts list and solderless directors to make a jig:

there are other ways to get into download mode.
Have you tried just holding the up and down volume buttons and then plugging in, or the adb method (adb reboot download)?
I have the exact same problem. my phone came back for a second with portrait mode and usb connectivity. usb worked on my desktop computer, i freaked out and ran to my laptop (that had odin one click, and mod software loaded on it) and plugged it in. while plugging it in to my laptop i noticed a bright blue spark on the usb connector wich i already had plugged into my phone and immediatly lost usb connectivity and went back to being stuck in landscape mode.... i wonder if this has something to do with it?
i had a similar problem and really thought my phone was bricked. I ended up having to use another computer to enter download mode. i installed the drivers first from the odin thread and held the up and down volume keys and plugged in the cable and it came back to life. This was after 24 hours or so of trying every possible combination and getting nothing but a black screen using my original computer.
When I connected the i897 and computer, there was nothing happened. No charging shows. No every modes. the screen have no response.

Can you post up a link to this solderless trick?
IT WORKED!
so i gave the 301K resistor and it worked beautifully!
- Fired up to download mode
- Opened odin (as admin and with compatibility on WinXP SP2)
- Plugged it in
- Clicked start on Odin.
apparently the new Galaxy S's dont have a hardware 3 button reset to get into download mode.

Computer do not connect with OB - so I can't restore stock rom! (USB problem?)

Hi,
(First, sorry for my bad english...)
I have a really big problem. My brother's OB has CM7 custom rom, with CWM recovery, so it lost it's warranty. The phone has got some hardware problem, like "silent" speaker at calling, can't connect to computer via usb and the turn on/off button has got hectic working.
Also, my problem:
- when I connect it to any computer at home, to restore the stock rom, I push the volume+ button, and it goes to flashmode, but the computer do not anything with the phone. The drivers are installed, and everything is done, wich is written by the "how-to". Some months earlier, I restored it, and this phone was in service, so I know what I do, but I think it's a hardware problem.
Sometimes the computer recognizes the device as "unkown device".
Has anyone an idea, how to solve my problem? Were there a method to flash V20O via zip file, than remove the recovery without computer?
Thanks for your help,
hornyak2!
Try rebooting the phone itself before connecting?
Same problem here. Now while charging it will not show as charging, i know its getting charged becoz the percent is going up. My solution to power button not working is i put a little cotton near the camera lens and close the case so that it put a little pressure near the usb port. That way the power button works fine. Usb connection n charging still nkt working right. Any help is welcome.

Hello,
In Smartflashtool does COM port shows anything after connecting phone?
No. Pc cannot detect the phone. I think it has somthing to do with the connection on the board which is not soldered but just pressed by the plastic case.

[Q][SOLVED] Phone will not respond when trying to update

I have the Xperia T and I am trying to update to 4.3, I had tried to use flashtool, but the phone isn't recognised by the computer when I plug in the cable holding the down button. Now the update is finally here for me I tried using PCC but again having the same issue. I have tried two different computers and all the USB ports on them. I have also fully switched off the battery (holding down the power and up button keys for 10 seconds).
I am stumped as to what is wrong with the phone??
thanks
Can no one suggest anything I could try? I have a feeling its a hardware fault, but it seems like a strange one at that... I dont know if its related but the phone also sometimes doesn't wake from sleep, it seems to be awake but the screen is not on, which requires me to do a hard restart
I am really desperate! thanks

turn of your phone. open flashtool. do not connect the phone to pc. select the firmware and click on flash,. after a few seconds it asks for the phone to connect. the hold the vol - button and plug in the usb. release the vol - button after the green light turns on. this may solve your issue

thanks for the suggestion though
Interesting update (well not really), but I did some troubleshooting and stuff and found that when plugging my phone into the charger when it is switched off, it doesn't respond either (i.e. boot up). So I have a feeling that its the actual phone with a fault such as damaged pin in the usb port that relates to power when the phone is switched off?

I have the same problem.
When the phone is turned off it won't charge, either wiht the wall charger or with the USB cable connected to the computer.
I've sent an email to SONY but they told me so sent it to tech support.
It's not very easy to do it where I am so I'm looking for some other options.
I also noticed it when I was trying to update to 4.3.
PC Companion isn´t a solution since it asks to connect the phone to the PC while turned off pressing the volume down button, even to try the repair.
Can someone help?
Found the issue here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018466
Such a weird problem, but unplugging and reconnecting the battery solved all the issues I was having!

Have a look at the thread link above, very simple to solve just take off the back cover and disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes

M7 bricked (?), possibly bootloader is wiped, can it be saved?

So, I let a friend of mine use my old M7 in order to repartition/format an sd card (using an OTG adapter). Came back with phone completely dead. I do suspect he ended up partitioning or formatting one of the system partitions in there (possibly the bootloader?) phone was rooted so...
Anyway, situation is as follows: Phone looks dead. Long pressing the power button does nothing, no vibration, no keys light up, no screen comes on.
BUT, when connecting it to the computer I get the usb connection sound on my Windows 10. If I long press the power button for ~10 seconds, i do get the usb disconnection sound, followed again by the usb connection sound. So "something" is alive in there. Also, power+vol down button does reboot the phone.
However there's no way to access recovery, bootloader, adb/fastboot, or even flash a RUU.
It isn't even charging when I plug it in, no red led.
Anything else I could try before giving up?
Thank you.

When you here that USB sound when connecting to your pc, go to the windows device manager and look for devices in the usb section. Is the phone showing as "QHSUSB_DLOAD" or simply "HTC Phone" ?

Yep sounds like your phone is in Qualcomm download mode. Usually this can happens for 2 reasons.
1- Hardware failure
2- Bad firmware flash
this thread can help: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2770684
Hard to tell since we don't know what your friend exactly did or what was used from that usb-otg drive.
A phone shop that can connect to your phone using jtag/riff could maybe fix it but doesn't worth the $$ asked for a 2013 phone, imo.

As far as he told me, he just used an app to try to format the otg drive, multiple times, and after a reboot phone died. He couldn't remember which app he used, but since phone was rooted, I can only guess he actually tried to format some system partition.
I will give the unbricking project a go, need to find a linux machine first. I really know jack about linux, but I guess it's no harm trying it Thank you!
