Will it work on Sprint?! - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been doing my research and havn't really found a straight answer if the Z or ZL will be able to work on the sprint networks does anyone know? Also excited to for MWC!

No. Although Sprint might pick it up in the future. Nobody really knows at this point.

Don't expect anything on CDMA from Sony right now. The hardware in the Xperia Z is in theory capable of connecting to EvDO and CDMA networks but I doubt Sprint and Verizon are going to support it.

What you mean is that the SoC can technically handle a CDMA radio - but i'll just be really clear here - the Xperia Z/ZL does not in any way support CDMA. You should probably suggest to your carrier that they use a transmission standard relevant to this century.

Busted =( haha hopefully Sony though will make it work so they can get the most out of the cell phone market before the M7 and S4 come out later.

Z/ZL US Release date?

Does anyone know yet which of these models(Z/ZL) are coming to the US? And maybe a release date?
:fingers-crossed:
Both will probably be coming to the US, but only unlocked through Sony's own retail channels. If I'm right both sets will work with HSPA+ on AT&T and T-Mobile (so no LTE).
Spectre should have more info on this though.

No LTE on AT&T is a bit a waste, isn't it?

The ZL will have LTE but not the Z which will only be HSPA+ (still very fast, I get upto 6.5 Mbps on my Xperia T on at&t on their HSPA+ network).

Not really, considering AT&T's transfer caps.
Even if I had LTE available in my area, I'd take an unlocked HSPA+ device over a carrier-mangled locked-down LTE device without any hesitation.
LTE isn't all it is cracked up to be, once you take into account monthly transfer limitations (Since AT&T now throttles "unlimited" users, there is no such thing as "unlimited" any more.), especially if you have access to HSPA+.
LTE was more critical for Verizon users, since CDMA2000 hit a wall without an upgrade path far earlier than UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ did.
I'm really hoping the rumors that the Z will be sold directly in a timely fashion are going to be true.
The ZL will be available from AT&T as far as I can tell, but that version will suffer from complete lockdown in addition to traditional AT&T firmware mutilation.

Its still up in the air about the Z availability in the US. Hoping its sold directly too.
AT&T isn't picking up the Z or ZL. but both should work on its network.
So till now, AT&T was the only carrier that sold the sony smartphones, with the only exception I think was the playstation phone on verizon.
So the most logical thing for me is Sony to push again through AT&T, because:
1) They already have done business in the past, and have worked out the business side, so it's a safe bet, they might try to work deals with other carriers later through the year to have bigger exposure to the market.
2) It's a flagship phone, Sony will try to get it in the hands of as many people, the comment that it'll be available only full price in retail channels made me laugh The situation is so heated, that they'll have to loose ton of money, just to try to snatch some market, to have a chance to stay a player in this market. They surely want to be in this market, why would they make the Z and show it at CES when no other big name was revealing top models - so they grab the spotlight at CES, and the phone doesn't get lost in all the announcements coming in Feb from the mobile congress.
3) AT&T would love to have another strong horse in the race so they are not dependent only on Apple or Samsung for the best devices they offer. For AT&T the bigger portfolio of manufacturers that want to move devices on their network gives them edge on pricing and other deal terms.
So yeah, I can bet money that in couple of weeks, there will be announcement/leak that AT&T will carry a Z/ZL phone, with LTE of course.
Spectre51 has said it before, AT&T won't be carrying the ZL or Z. The ZL will be sold unlocked through Sony's own retail channels, the Z may be sold unlocked too.

He is the source. As far as I know he works at AT&T but I'm not sure.
I'm starting to like this phone. I'm currently on T-Mobile so I probably will only see 3G speeds correct? If so maybe StraightTalk could be an option as my contract expires in June of this year.

I wonder why AT&T would skip out on such a great device. Especially considering what appears to be a long term relationship with Sony. It doesn't make much sense...

They were supposed to pick up the ZL but backed out a month or so ago. They will be picking up the Fall device from Sony and it's supposed to be a flagship phone.
I asked one of the AT&T associates and they confirmed they will be getting zl but not sure about the z

Hmm I would consider buying a factory unlocked ZL then and using it on ATT's network - less bloat.

Can you tell me (or better yet show me) what the Sprint HTC One compares to lets say a Sprint GS3 or other Sprint LTE device with regards to LTE reception. Really what I would like to see is the RSRP (dBm) values of each device sitting side by side. I myself have an HTC EVO LTE and love the (almost) all metal construction that HTC did with the phone. The one thing I do not like however, is the LTE performance. 3G is great and on par with other devices, but I want to make sure HTC fixed this in the HTC one before I buy it.
Thanks in advance!

Wow, they actually put earbuds in with this phone. I haven't gotten a pair of earbuds with a new phone from Sprint since my Touch Pro (Maybe the Touch Pro2).
I was actually wondering how it works with roaming. Is it possible you can force it to roam for a moment? Or is that a root only function (been on a rooted phone too long). I don't expect LTE to roam, but I also don't recall seeing any info about a 2g/1x radio onboard. There's a little get-away I go to often in the summer that has no Sprint coverage and hoping I'm not bringing a paperweight every time I go.
Is the phone unlocked? It has a slot for a microsim, correct?

Maybe as a follow up to this question, we believe it has a MicroSIM slot (please let us know if it does not). Have you attempted to use an AT&T micro SIM in it as well? An international microSIM such as 3, Vodafone, etc?

And yes it is the only sprint phone with replaceable micro sim. But it is carrier locked. Att, ST, and tmo sim = no go. I am a sprint rep and not even my point of contacts new anything yet about unlocking

I'm sure it won't be far from now when it gets a carrier unlock. I know it's probably that way because of the law, but when they pass the new bill, it'll be allowed.
Although no force roaming, do you know if it's 3g roaming, 1x roaming, or neither?

Can you try the following dialer codes to see if they work?
##DEBUG# (##33284#)
##DATA# (##3282#)
*#*#INFO#*#* (*#*#4636#*#*)
If DEBUG works, can you see if there is an “LTE Engineering” menu to view the RSRP/RSRQ values? These values are also in the “Phone information” menu if the INFO code works.
If the INFO code does not work, would you mind downloading the following app?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mangelow.network
Basically, it’s a shortcut to the “Phone information” menu that you would find through INFO, but if they killed the dialer code, this might be the only way to access it (assuming the menu itself is still there).
I’m sorry, I know this is kind of a lot, but a lot of people are going to be eager to find out if they can use this phone for field testing to see if it’s a better RF performer than the EVO LTE. Thanks in advance!
Adrian, can you enlighten us as to the storage space? Under Settings/Storage. Some of us are wanting to know how much User Accessible space is available to store music, movies, photos, etc.

[Question][Discussion] Do you think that the next Nexus will be available for Verizon

If I remember right, I remember reading a leak somewhere that the next Nexus will be available on CDMA networks. I'll try my best to find the source if anybody wants it. But it'll take a while because I'm on my phone currently. If you do think it'll be available for Verizon and sprint, how would that work. As far as I know, Verizon's SIM cards aren't similar to GSM cards at all. So you'd need an actual SIM card from the Verizon store. Would that mean that Verizon would want complete control over the the phone like the Galaxy Nexus? How do you see this playing out?

Nobody knows. Might as well as for tomorrow lottery winning number.

The LG d120 that went through the FCC and is widely expected to be the next Nexus was both gsm and cdma compatible, as well as having LTE support for AT&T's, T-Mobile's, and Sprint's bands, but unfortunately not for Verizon's. This not good news for Verizon customers, since I doubt they'll allow it on their network without LTE support. I did read some speculation that there might be a separate model just for Verizon, but I kinda doubt it. It's more likely that Verizon are being their usual dickish control freak selves and don't want to play Google's open, unlocked game.
Sent from an N4 blessed with AOKP and sanctified by Faux123!
I thought Google wasn't supporting cdma devices anymore. Didn't they drop support for the sprint galaxy nexus because of that? I pretty much thought they wanted to keep it simple and have just one device, since the rest of the world is gsm. Maybe I'm wrong.

Please use one of the existing Nexus 5 threads. Discussion of a phone's successor is allowed, but having numerous threads is not.

[Q] Verizon LTE Band support?

Hey guys, I've searched Google and the forums and I couldn't find my answer. I apologize if I overlooked anything.
I'm on Verizon and I understand that GSM phones cannot work with CDMA which made me bummed out since this phone is what I really want to use. I was even planning on going to a different carrier but decided not to.
Anyway, at Best Buy a mobile associate told me that as long as the phone supports Verizon's LTE bands, I can just slip in Verizon's sim card and I'll be able to use the phone. Now I told him that I'm sure he was wrong about it and he insisted that it's a fact and wouldn't change his mind about it at all.
So basically, since the Sony Xperia Z1 supports Verizon's LTE bands, can I just pop in a Verizon sim card and everything will work?
Thanks in advance.
Sorry, but you cannot simply slip a Verizon Sim card into a GSM phone and expect it to work 100%. You may get LTE but I don't believe you'll get anything else (such as phone calling capabilities and what not).
The Best Buy associate is only half right. It's unfortunate because it's guys like him that make us look like we don't know what we're talking about (I'm am employee as well).
Good luck though! At this point, Verizon can offer all the LTE they want, they can't provide customers with all the amazing phones that are available. The Nexus 5 will be another big deal breaker for Verizon customers, as it won't fully with with Verizon either.

Xperia Z in the US

Stupid question:
I have a UK Xperia Z on O2 and am due to move to the US at the end of the year. I'll need to get a contract with a US carrier of course, but my question is whether my UK Xperia Z will work with a US carrier? As said it might be a daft question but I wasn't sure and I dont want to find out when I'm sitting in a hotel in New York wondering why my phone doesn't work.
Won't you get a new phone with a new contract?
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
Yes it will work. I believe on att as far as hspa+ and T-Mobile edge. I'm 90% sure as I have had a few carrier locked international phones that were completely unlocked once over here in the states. So I don't see why this would be any difference.
You won't be able to get LTE (4G) in some regions with AT&T since they use 2 different LTE bands which one is not compatible with the Z.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk
What version of the Z do you have? C660?

Sorry, I remembered wrong. It's 3G I was talking about. I was in Arizona 1,5 month ago and had no 3G using Red Pocket who uses AT&T network. My fiancee has Xperia P and had 3G using same network.

The smartest move is to sell it in the UK and buy a new phone in the US. The Xperia Z you have is not compatible with US LTE bands and probably not with T-Mobile's AWS 3G+.
