Hi,
I own a tablet Nexus 7.
I just bought a HTC Media Link to watching HD video on television.
But there is a problem. When the HTC is connect on television, I see the image that invites to swipe my fingers on my Nexus to see on television.
The Nexus 7 detects the HTC Wifi and connects with password. So far no problem.
Then I open the application Wifi Media to view photos and play a video.
But Wifi Media doesn't detect HTC, It only sees that android tablet.
In addition, Wifi Media does not play any video in any format on the Nexus 7 itself.
I tried several things, uninstall, reinstall, close the tablet, restart the HTC, I even reset the Nexus 7 at the original factory setting but nothing works.
However, different videos on Youtube shows that this should work.
I thought the new update for Android 4.2.2 would help but ....No.
Somebody ask you this before ?
Can you help ?

I also had Nexus 7 and I am using HTC Media Link. Unfortunately DLNA does't work when HTC Media Link is in hot spot mode, you need to reconfigure HTC device so it can connect to your wi-fi router, then Nexus 7 can connect too your wi-fi and then Wifi Media can see HTC.

Type IP address in web browser, then http page will open. You can change password and add/change wi-fi network. This is some example how it looks like: tinyurl . com / acbcdo9. I remember I had problem with that - not every wifi security type was working so I couldn't connect. I had currently WPA2-PSK and this is working. WEP should work too.
When you are connected to network you can also update firmware.
With Media Link HD I didn't use 8080 port for web page like they did in article, just default address.

In case you don't know and if storage is an issue for you, you can use USB storage devices like flash drive, SD card reader, etc. by using an microUSB OTG cable, root your phone, and install Stickmount as per this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736825
However, I was also looking into alternative methods to increase indirectly increase storage capacity like things like videos and media. Media including videos and music, I believe is the number one reason why people want to increase their storage, so we will concentrate on that. My example scenario will be wanting to watch a movie on a plane (in which there is no wifi internet available).
There are wifi hard drives like Kingston wi-drive and Seagate GoFlex Satellite wifi drives that would work (haven't tested myself), but those arent' cheap. CloudFTP is similar but is still expensive. I would like to see a similar device without any onboard memory, but at a cheaper price, basically something like CloudFTP but at around $50-60. If anybody knows of one, that would be great!!
Then I thought about why not use the hardware you already have and carry with you at all times, your phone? It has wifi and it has expandable memory (most do at least). It would be great if an app can allow you create a wifi network (ad hoc network?) that Nexus 7 connect to and can then share the storage on your phone.
Well, I couldn't find one that does all of that in one step, but I did manage to get it to work with a few steps based on this reply by mrfahrenheit94 (THANKS!):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28818320#post28818320
Basically:
1. Wifi tether your Nexus 7 to your phone (ie Wireless Tether for rooted phone).
2. Run Es File Explorer on your phone (latest version I am using version 1.6.1.6 from Play market, just make sure it supports remote FTP server). Go to Settings, then Remote Settings (Under Network Settings). Check Remote Manage. It will display an ftp address.
2. Run ES File Explorer on Nexus 7. On the upper left hand corner, press the button that probably says Local by default and has a small down arrow. Select FTP. Now press "New" and then select FTP again to add FTP server, Under Server, enter the FTP address that was displayed at the end on step 2 on your phone (do not enter the "ftp://" part, just the numbers after it), but only enter the adress before the colon. Under port enter the number after the colon. Then check the anonymous box. Press OK and now you should have that FTP address as an icon. Select it and you should now see your phone's files and folders. Now you should be able to navigate to your video or media files and select it to play using an external media player. I suggest using Dice Player (free with Ad version). VLC Beta may work as well but I seem to have more luck with Dice Player.
Main drawback will be battery life especially on the phone!!!!
Thus I tried to do this with bluetooth by using Foxfi to tether. At home it worked and I was able to stream a video although very slight stutter at times. However, i realize that Foxfi only worked when my phone has an internet connection (which is not true when on an airplane).
THUS, IF YOU ARE GOING TO TEST THIS, TURN OFF YOUR CELLULAR DATA CONNECTION TO TEST IF IT WILL WORK WHEN YOU HAVE NO INTERNET LIKE ON A PLANE.
It does for the Wireless Tether app on Play market even without internet.
What I would like to know and for us to discuss:
1. Any other alternative methods for using wifi storage?
2. Any app that is similar to Foxfi that can Bluetooth tether but doesn't require an internet connection?
3. Any app that can just create a network connection between the two android devices without actual tether feature?
4. A IOS app similar to ES File Explorer to navigate ftp server. Maybe set it up in XBMC?
5. Any interest in a developer creating a one step app that connects and share two devices via wifi and/or bluetooth without any tethering (and thus would work for nonrooted phones)?
One thing I envisioned was one a plane I bring nexus 7 for the kids and my asus TF300 for myself. I would love it if I can share the videos from the TF300 which has a larger capapcity and bigger battery than my phone to the Nexus 7, but I couldn't get Wireless Tether to work on the Asus Tf300 (probably because it is not a phone). Hence, the request for #3 above.
I apologize if this is common knowledge and a waste of time for many of you.
my RAZR can tether and it has 8+16Gb of storage. and it also has 6Gb/month data connection.
oh yes, im planning on tether-connect it with the Nexus.... alot.... for videos and data.
It's good to have alternative methods like this, as a lot of people will certainly use it. Since my phone is in pretty poor shape all around, I doubt I'll utilize it anymore than I have to until I get an upgrade. Personally I'm going to go the USB OTG route with StickMount for long rides/traveling/etc, basically in situations where I might actually find myself watching a few movies back to back to burn up the travel time. I can't see in regular day to day operation needing that functionality, but at least it's there for the rare occasion where I might benefit from it. :good:
You could use bubble pnp to share files from your phone when connected to a LAN. For direct access I know there is a app that allows you to share your storage thru samba. It was just reviewed on android police, I'll try to find the link.

Connection Speed
I'm only getting like 100KB/s download speed by using this method. Way to slow for streaming video. Even with a 8MB buffer size. Is this a similar speed to what you guys are getting? I'm tethering with FoxiFi from my EVO 4G LTE. My phone is rooted, but for some reason, this is the only tethering method/app that has worked for me. Any suggestions?
The name of the app is SyncMe wireless. It turns your phone into a samba share(or cifs share).

I found a way to connect the TF300 with the Nexus 7 just for the sake of sharing the storage of the TF300. Thanks to another thread on xda, i discovered Wifi Direct works great, and is plenty fast. I think Wifi Direct is only found in some versions of ICS. Took me a while to figure out how to turn it on since it is different for each tablet. On Nexus 7, it is in the settings button in the upper right hand corner when you are in Wi-Fi- settings.
On TF300, I think it is in the "more" section or "advanced" section under Network subsection.
Will give SyncMe a try.
Does it also create its own ad hoc network, or do you still have to connect via wifi somehow?

I just ordered my N7 and was just wondering exactly which app you are using on the N7 to actually find the files on your TF300 to stream. I have a Galaxy S3 that I know can share files with WI-FI direct. I just need to know what to get on the N7 you be able to see the files.
Thanks!
I am reviving this thread because I was interested in a method of streaming multimedia from my s3 to the N7.
Using 3G is not possible because in Argentina the speed of networks are pure SH*T, and the method of ES FIle Explorer did not work for me.
BUT I found a way in other forum (androidcentral, thanks to rubrnek), and basically these are the steps:
1) on the phone install Twonky Mobile
2) on the N7 install aVia media player
3) turn on wifi hitspot on the phone and connect the N7 to it
4) set up twonky library on the phone
5) open aVia media player on the N7 and select Twonky Mobile as the source
6) Navigate the files and play!
I was amazed on how fast it works, I did not tried a 720p or 1080p movie, since it is an overkill in my opinion (mostly a 1080p movie on a phone or tablet), I just tried photos and an DVDRIP AVI of Bill&Ted movie and it plays like it was a local file, the best part is that open the file with Dice player, not some rare player.
Now I have an 88gb Nexus 7

Does this method also allow us to transfer files from phone to the tablet? I do not have the device yet, but will be getting it soon and one thing that bothered me was the lack of USB Mass Storage option when connecting to a PC. I prefer transferring files directly rather than MTP. Do apps like AirDroid work?

OMG! Thanks so much for this ultra simple phone to tablet "local wifi ftp connection" method. Most important we need is just a wifi tether/ hotspot phone or tab, which 99% of android do, i believe. I've tried to connect all my SGS1, SGS2, SGtab7.7, HP Touchpad (TP, no usg otg) n they all connect flawlessly. IMO, this method is even more versatile than "Wifi Direct" comes with Samsung devices, which feels a tad faster. Why bother w installing other apps, when u can get done w 1 great free app, ESbrowser.
To my surprise, i also learned that wifi tethering function actually works with mobile data disconnect, through this.
Triple thks for your tutorial, excellent work. High Five!
Got this to work with esfile explorer between my N7 & SG3. One question though.
When I browse the files on my SG3, I can't see the files on my external sd card, only the ones on the internal memory. Anyone have any ideas on how to access the external card?

What I'm really looking for, essentially, is some sort of a connection between my Nexus 7 and my PC, wirelessly, so I can stream / use files on my Nexus 7 while I'm in bed etc.
I have not the slightest clue what it is, and hence I couldn't do a search for it, because I don't even know the 'keyword' for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Try Plex: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en
You can use ES File Explorer to stream one file at a time, so it would work for video, but not so well for music. I thought I would throw this out there because you did not mention what type of media you wanted to stream.
I use ES Explorer. Swipe left to access the wireless networks. I have a hard drive plugged into my router so that I can stream films to mx player without any pc needing to be powered up.

If you do have TV and Movies organized on a network accessible drive, then Plex is amazing. Had a good organization of my files on a PC I have always on. Installed Plex Media Server on the PC, and the Plex app on my Nexus 7, and it pulls up episode descriptions and everything.
I am very impressed.
if your Nexus 7 and pc connected to a router then use bsplayer setting up for LAN then you can use your N7 to play any audio/video from your pc.
XBMC
I've gotta recommend XBMC. It let's you stream all your media, from videos to pictures. It also presents it in a beautiful way too. Plex's underlying code is actually XBMC.
- Idea: Want to play Mobile Games on my big HD TV (has no DLNA), only solution so far: MHL Cable, but this is a pain in the a s s you need a MHL Adapter, a Charging Cable and a 5 meter HDMI Cable. b*tch please. that's no fun.
- Problem: TV has no DLNA function where i could mirror the Mobile Phone screen, else it would be solved.
Is there a Solution?
my PC is connected with DVI-HDMI to the HD TV, so if i could make my PC work like a DLNA Receiver with VLC Player or something, maybe i could get the Xperia Z find my PC in the LAN as DLNA device and stream the Xperia Screen (Games, Videos) to the PC VLC Player and watch it on my TV then like i play games on my PC.
Is this possible and how ?
DLNA will not enable you to play games on your tv. It will allow the playback of media.
You need something to mirror the phone image. Like MirrorLink. Which isn't available yet.

ok, that's what i thought in the first place.
i contacted the sony support today and they told me that i can not play games from my phone on my older sony bravia tv without a MHL Adapter Cable (Micro USB to HDMI), but with a newer DLAN TV (yes DLAN, he thought it is correct like this, in the end i told him it's called DLNA).
that's where my thoughts came from, that a pc may also be able to view the screen picture and act as a DLNA Receiver like the newer DLNA TVs.
It's not DLNA, it's Miracast. Currently no solution to have your computer act as receiver exists, but it is theoretically possible on any device with WiFi and WiFi Direct.
Remember though that wireless mirroring doesn't work simultaneously with regular WiFi and has over a second delay.

You could play limited media through your laptops DLNA server from the phone, just select your computer from the throw settings. But of course you will have to have the computer connected to the TV.
One scond delay over wifi, dude you need a new router or network config, there is a delay, but I would suggest it shouldn't be one second, this would be due to the connected device rendering the image for display not WIFI lag.
Yes as for using your tv for what you are asking MHL is really your only option

He asked about mirroring, not streaming. Streaming music or movies to your pc is easy, I just use foobar for that (music only).
Miracast doesn't use your router at all, it's WiFi Direct which means it goes directly from your phone to the receiving device. You obviously haven't tried it because there really is quite some delay. Your phone has to compress the display data on the fly, transmit it and then the receiver needs to decode it. Don't expect that too be to fast. Check some YouTube videos and you'll see there is a delay.

Yep and what do you think DLNA is??? Only streaming of various media types. So the answer is clearly NO. That was his question. And that is what I told him

Yes I wasn't referring to WIFI direct nor miracast, and neither were you in your quote stating about the over one second delay, well at least you didn't make that clear. I was referring to using wifi to mirror my screen on my Sony TV, and I state that quite clearly.
You ovbiously got out of the wrong side of the bed
Guys I got a PTV3000 which allows for widi & miracast wireless display mirroring. I had an Xperia Z which mirrored perfectly but my new HTC one dont ;(. I dont want to spend money on another dongle e.g. HTC Media Link. As the device has the capability. But I have not being able to connect it. 2 questions, will All Share App apk on Samsung work on the One to force it to display? or even an apk of the Mirror link app from Sony. There must be a way to connect it via an apk or something? any help would be welcome.
Google and see if you can get the APK's, install them (Hopefully they will instal) and try it mate, thats all you can really do. . .
All Share is from samsung and will not install on HTC, at least I didn't managed to install it on nexus.
I don't know for mirroring but i've used skifta for streaming media files to tv.
The phone does support Miracast for sure but you just need a app to use it.
I was able to view photos on my LG TV via the Sense gallery but videos would not work, kept saying cannot play back media.
A mirroing app like the Xerpia Z would be cool.
giotecno if you try and install it to your One and it works please share it.
[I sold the Xperia z and didn't extract the apk's so I am stuck. not sure where I am gonna find a program that will enable the miracast to mirror via wireless. what I don't understand is Miracast is going to be a whole standard why limit the phone so it just connects via your own proprietary media link dongle. Mind you with JB 4.2.2 update we might just get the wireless display option to use miracast.

So you can play games on the TV too?
How did you switch on the mirror mode?
After loading the latest firmware on my netgear PTV3000. Nekromantik try this, make sure your TV is ready for MIracast and is looking for the device. Turn off wifi on phone and then fully power off your HTC Onc and switch back on and then go to Media Output this will enable your Wifi on the phone and hopefully will see the device.

I'm trying to cast my (Tab S2 9.7) screen to my Chromecast (v2). If I use the Google Cast app it sees my Chromecast, I choose the "cast screen/audio" option then get a warning that the device is not optimised, and when I continue nothing gets cast to the Chromecast - the tablet shows a "connecting to Chromecast" message which never goes away, and the TV/Chromecast screen remains blank.
If I use the Quick Connect option on the tablet it doesn't detect the Chromecast on the list of devices.
I'm running Android 6.0.1 (stock, unrooted).
Any ideas how I can cast to my Chromecast??
Google Cast works on my T810 using stock 6.0.1, so you must have a hardware problem. I'm assuming your connection to your router is OK from both your tablet and the Chromecast device because Google Cast sees the device. But to be sure, I'd re-install the Chromecast device on your network. If that fails, do you have another tablet you can use to test it? Or have you tried another HDMI port on the TV/Monitor? Or another TV? All I can say for sure is this isn't a general problem with MM on the T810 because I use it quite often.

Mine's an SM-T815. Anyone manage to Chromecast from one of these?
The Chromecast/TV setup seems fine - can cast from my phone no problem. Are you casting using the Google Cast app or the "Quick Connect" Samsung utility?

Samsung's Quick Connect connects via Bluetooth to transfer files. Google Cast connects via your wifi network and that's what I use. There is also a way to cast without a Chromecast device but I think that only works with Samsung Smart TVs.

Eh? According to this, Quick Connect uses Bluetooth OR Wifi to connect to devices including Chromecasts:

Maybe it's supposed to, but I just tried it and the only "nearby device" it found was "Samsung Cloud Print". Even with Bluetooth turned on. It doesn't even see my Desktop Computer, though it does show in my Bluetooth connections.
edit: I just had a chat with Samsung support and they are blaming Quick Connect not working on Google. Always the other guys fault.

Mine can see my Samsung Smart TV and Onkyo A/V receiver (both wifi-only devices), but not the Chromecast :0(

The only thing I can think of is that maybe your Chromecast device is an older model?

Interesting....I tried casting to an old Chromecast v1 (in another room) and it worked fine. Then I tried casting to the Chromecast v2 again, and this time it worked. I hadn't tampered with the Chromecast v2 at all. So now it's working, but I have no idea why it wasn't working before....?????
Hi Guys, sorry to butt in here, but you may be able to help me with my new Tab S2 9.7 64G Lolipop 6.0 (I think its 6.0) that I got for my 70yo mum to play movies on her Sony 46" non smart tv with either the Google Chrome Cast or MiraCast. I purchased a few micro USB to HDMI MTH?2.0 adaptors, and non of them show an image on her screen. I don't want to go and buy the Samsung adaptor as its easier to change movies play and pause using VLC media player while sitting on the couch for her. Can any of you please tell me the easiest dongle I can buy to simply play movies wireless to the HDMI dongle in the back of the tv? Happy to go Google Chrome, but which model do I need? Thanks in advance guys!

The problem with HDMI/MHL dongles is that they are difficult to connect. Most of them will work if you have the patience to keep trying until the finally connect. But then, you are forced to leave your tablet within a few feet of the TV. I MUCH prefer a Chromecast dongle that plugs into the TV and uses your wifi to connect. Most TVs also have a USB port that you can use to power the dongle rather than having to plug a separate power adapter into a wall plug. Here is one on eBay that is only $17 whereas a "Google" branded one will cost about $40. You can even get cheaper ones if you are willing to ship from China.
The current software to mirror the tablet on the TV is "Google Home". But be warned, the picture is not "widescreen" or HD.

Absolutely go for Chromecast, the easiest and most reliable way to cast from any Android device to the TV.
Do NOT buy a cheap chromecast copy from Ebay, they do not work properly.
Pretty much everywhere is selling CHROMECAST very cheap at the moment in Black Friday promo deals.
Get it now while you can as the price will go back to normal soon!
