[Q] Help with Hook HD+ - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All - First Post...I hope I am doing this right.
I have a Nook HD+ (32GB internal) with a 64GB Micro SD Card. I use my Nook HD+ for general net surfing and watching movies/TV shows.
I am having an issue playing non-B&N video content. I will try watching a TV show in mp4 format. At random times the video will stop playing and I will get an error message that the video can not be played at this time. Turning the device off and back on does not correct the problem. Unmounting and remounting the SD Card does not solve the issue. Using a different SD Card does not correct the problem.
Also if I delete a video from the device or SD card it won't delete. I have two "ghost files" currently that will not delete no matter what I try. I have wiped and reformatted the SD card and they are still showing up. The ghost files do not show on my PC but show on the Nook HD+.
I have performed a factory reset. I have erased the SD Card. I tried calling Nook Support. That got me no where. I would love some help.
This all started with the software update they pushed earlier this week. I am ready to throw the stupid thing away and go buy a Samsung 10. I feel like I have wasted my money.

I start from end.
No you dont wasted your money. Just stock software is not for using device as media player. And yes they limited most of Android power only to reading books and visiting B&N shop to waste money
These "ghost" files not real files. Only symlinks and cache, which ones stock software not able to delete after real file deleting. Dont know why stock soft acts this way.
You can delete these files but for this you need root your device and install some additional file manager (RootExplorer, Astro File manager or OI File Manager etc). Look to this thread and you see that rooting and installing sideload apps is not hard. Even more, you can get more media power at your device if you start using CM10 (thread here)
With stock is help very limited due to B&N side lock for /system dir.

For playing non-protected content, I would try BSplayer first. By far it's the best player that will play most stuff w/o any problem including wirelessly streaming 1080p MKV file from a Windows PC.

I've never just copied and pasted. Use an app (I use doubletwist) to transfer and see if that works.....
Are you sure they are mp3s? It sounds like you're using the iTunes hierarchy, which means you may be using its music format. That could be a cause.
Also, this is in the wrong section.

None of it would cause that. Are you sure it's not scanning your media? If not, then I honestly have no idea what you're talking about.
All of my music is in .mp3 format that was organized artist>album>song for iTunes, and it works perfect on my Captivate. If the phone is scanning your SD card, then it will bog the phone down significantly (especially my class 2 16GB external SD...so slow to scan, but cheap to buy).
Did you give it a few minutes for media to finish scanning?
Try a USB port on the back of your computer instead.
I had a similar problem when I first got the phone when transferring a large amount of files to an external SD card. The entire phone would become horribly laggy and even pressing "power off" it wouldn't ever fully turn off, requiring a battery pull to actually restart the phone. I tried loading media onto the SD card directly from the computer and everything worked fine and the phone was able to scan it without crashing. But copying files from external to internal (or vice versa) also caused the phone to react the same way.
The only thing I figure was that it was a VERY low-quality micro SD card (2 GB, not even SDHC, no idea what the class was). When I put in a 8 GB class 6 card, I never ran into this problem again. If this is happening while transferring to your internal SD card, I don't know what the issue might be; but if it's an external, try using a certified high-quality micro SD and see if the problem persists.
edit: I know you said it was to internal SD card, but try removing the external if you have one to see if the issue is still there (the internal would also behave oddly when I had a low quality SD in external even if I wasn't using the external).

HELP!!1 External SD Card Issues (Music, ROM, etc...)

I have searched high and low for the answer to this but only found 2 others with the same unresolved issue.
I got a Sandisk 32gb Micro SD card today. I put it in my phone and formatted it. It was all well and good until I wanted to put files on it.
Firstly, and most importantly for me, I cannot copy music onto the card properly. When I put music on I get one of two messages: either 'file type not supported' or 'file does not exist' - either of these messages will come up when a file is selected via the media player (I use winamp but have tried in the stock player and TuneWiki).
In terms of transferring files to the external SD I have tried:
- Copy/pasting from my PCs music folder
- Copy/pasting into the internal SD music folder from my PCs music folder (the internal accepts and plays files fine), then pasting them from the internal to the external
(I have also tried dragging and dropping)
- Loading them via winamp. (When I do this method it says that all files are transferred but when I unplug there is only a few files (out of the tens, hundreds or thousands I have tried to put on in any given time. Some files play but it dumps most into an 'Unknown Artist' folder and refuses to play them giving the prior mentioned error messages. Most of the files seem to be dumped in a directory on the SD card call 'LOST.DIR'. The files are given a numeric name and are an unknown file format.
- All methods I have tried have put a majority of files in the 'LOST.DIR' folder and the 'Unknown Artist' folder. Also, all methods tried have shown everything to be a success (i.e. all files showing up nicely in their respective folders, winamp shows 100% sync success), it is only when I disconnect my phone and check on it does it show how awry it has all gone. When I plug my phone back in the mess is then represented on my PC too. -
It seems to be very slightly more reliable when files are done in small chunks. In winamp if I copy a few files over, disconnect phone, re-connect phone and carry on it works a bit better but still drops most files.
My second issue (which is likely related) is trying to play ROMs from the SD card. I copied some PSX games and their save states to the external SD and opened them up. They appear to open but it just displays a black screen. I can load the games but they will ONLY play if I load up a save from when I was playing from the internal SD card. If I try to load up a new game that I haven't played before I am just stuck at the black screen. The app itself is running fine, or so it seems, I can still access and mess about in the menus.
I have not tried my GBA, SNES or Genesis emulators yet as when I tried to copy the ROMs over they just disappeared into the 'LOST.DIR' folder, I'll have to redeem those from my PC.
I have also tried to go via Kies for all of this but it will not acknowledge my phone. My phone is rooted, not sure if that matters to Kies.
I'm sorry if that is all a bit awkward to read, I find it difficult to explain. If you need any more info just ask Please help me! I've been at this all day!
Thanks guys .
Smells like fake card .
Ebay purchase ??? Honk Kong ???
Test the sd card in a sd card reader .
Fill it up with data it should take at least 28 GB
Long time to write data could be fake .
Try the Sandisk checking tools from the web site .
jje
Tried a different card. Only tried using music files but it worked which leads me to think that everything else will work too. So it seems you are right: fake card.
Thanks for your help man. I'll go and try to get a refund from that Hong Kong eBay seller, haha .
EDIT: Although. I uninstalled psx4droid because it wouldn't run my ROMs properly and then re-installed it. The sound is really crackly now, I know some other people have that issue but I never did. Also, my phone crashed twice this morning so I have to take the battery out, it has never done that before. Can fake cards mess your **** up?

Self-deleting videos on microSD

I have a problem (my friend also) on the Note, when I load videos on microSD, in any folder, they disappear after some time. I do not use Kies, but frequently I connect the phone with cable for external storage.
thanks
Hi,
no idea to solve?
Did you try doing a disk check?

...the strange thing is that a friend has the same problem...
^^ are those 720p videos ? or greater than 4gb in size ?
same issue
Most of the videos has been deleted from my micro sd card (32 gb) with my galaxy note. It is really frustrating, problem disappears if using phones storage. A fix is requested urgently cuz this not accaptable from samsung.

While connecting the phone to the PC it is possible that a program intended for synchronizing or importing media file to PC can delete the files from SDcard. So does "PMB Sony" for example. You can change it in options.
Same issue with samsung Galaxy s2
Same issue here. My device keeps deleting video files from my external 16gb microsd.
I put video files inside a folder (/media/video) and after some time the files disappear. The only thing that I do is plug and unplug from a pc mounting usb storage several times a day (i do not use Kies).
I also used a freeware program to recover deleted files from the microsd and found out that the files were marked as deleted (i had success in recovering).
This thing is starting to be very annoying.
I'm on MIUI 1.12.9.
Thanks
I confirm that I have the same problem.

If I store video on the phone memory (not inside te microSD), the problem persists,
without using Kies, where can I found the menu to change options?
thanks

This is true and I also can confirm this. I did not notice that my videos were missing until I saw this post and checked for my videos on my XD card and they were all gone What was odd was that the video which were transferred over from another computer to the XD card did not vanish but the videos which were recorded with this Samsung Note did all vanish WTF
I never did a sync either.
I really don't remember the used application 'cause I did it on a pc that i can not acces anymore. In any case, the application was free and i really found it on 5seconds search on google.
bye
I'm thinking of two things, neither of which are probably right
Firstly, I recently installed Window7 alongside my Linux Mint installation. On this I've noticed that if I copy files from Mint to the windows partition that Win7 often does a chkdsk thing on booting up and goes and deletes all these files ! I've never had this happen with any other version of Windows (Xp, etc). I'm wondering is there some filesystem 'tag' on your pc that makes the system think that file is corrupt or something and results in the files being hidden/deleted.
Secondly, I was looking on Amazon for a Sandisk sd card and I saw a review by a guy who said that many sd cards are fakes and not made by Sandisk at all. Apparently a lot of these have a much smaller capacity than claimed and as you add data they fill up and older data is destroyed. Here is the link

I never connected my Samsung Note to a Windows PC and the videos still vanished.
Same issue here..
First of all, I don't think it's a resolution issue because I have two similar videos, one disappeared while the other is still there.
Second of all, my videos are on the phone's memory and not an external sd.
If I go to folder details and check last modified date I notice that all folders from which videos have disappeared have been modified at the same time.
No solution?!
did anybody contact Samsung?
and could it be app "smart lock" causing this disappearance?
thanks
all of you developers out there.. anyone to help??
I might be wrong, but i think that those files aren't deleted at all. You may have a FOUND or LOST dir on you micro SD card with files in it that are the same size of the lost Videos.
I think this problem occures when you turn the phone off while it searches for media files on the card.
Try making a .nomedia file on your SD Card root folder, Stock players might not find any Videos after you've done that but you can easily open them with a Filemanager (ES FileExplorer).
.nomedia helped me

maybe I do not understand your proposal, but the problem persists if I put video in the memory of the phone (not external microSD) adn I do not find the file with File Explorer, so I think it is lost...
I remember some people complaining about this when the EVO 4G first came out as well & for some it seemed to be bad SD cards but there were also a lot of firmware changes happening so unclear about the determined cause. This is troubling & would not like to still have to worry about this if I purchase the SGNote. Sounds like backup & keeping an eye on this is necessary. Has anyone emailed Samsung?

It does not install apps to internal media anyway. It installs them to /data unless you tell them to install to SD. And on CM7, if you did not have an SD, you could swap emmc and sdcard so that apps are fooled. Maybe that is how you did it. CM10 does not have that feature implemented get.

Hi Leapinlar. Thanks for tips thread and for the partition repair scripts. I have done multiple intalls to emmc trying to rectify an internal storage issue. Unlike the user above, I'm not trying to install apps to the media partition, just trying to save files(pictures) to internal storage. My media partition is currently 4.2 gigs, but each time I try to save or open the gallery a message pops up that "no sd card is present." I am new to the NC but not to rooting, and have had a really good experiences with CM and Kang builds on a Galaxy S2. I have never used an sd card on my phone and media files save to the internal storage with no issues whatsoever, so I'm wondering if the CM nightlies for NC are so radically different than the JB rom on my phone as to cause errors in accessing the internal storage on the NC. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes, the Nooks are different than many phones. On many phones, the internal media storage is named "sdcard". And external cards end up getting called something like "ext_sdcard". That way when apps look for "sdcard" to store their books, music, whatever, it ends up using internal storage. But for the Nooks, internal storage is called "emmc" and only external cards get called "sdcard ". And since many apps will not run unless it can find "sdcard", CM7 has a setting that lets you swap emmc and sdcard. So internal storage gets called "sdcard" and external cards get called "emmc". That is for users that have no external card inserted. But that is not yet implemented in CM10. So until that does get implemented the work around is to insert an external card. There are hacks you can use, but most are not simple.

Great info, thanks. I'm rather techy, but it's funny how the more you know, the more you realize there is to learn. I only mentioned my phone as it seemed a fair reference point as it is running AKOP JB, and the settings for it and the Nook are all but identical. Storage settings on both devices show two partitions( is that the term?) each labeled "internal storage" the first on each dedicated to data and the second to media. On the Nook that media portion seems inaccessible even from a PC; it shows up as "My Nook Color," or some such, if I connect as an MTP device, but if I attempt to drag and drop a file a message pops up saying the device has stopped or has been disconnected, even though it is clearly visible and connected. I believe your tips has a link for fixing adb/usb(?) but I haven't gotten that far yet. It is fun to be learning a new device and your guides are invaluable. I picked up the NC as a refurb, full warranty, for $75 so it was hard to pass up. Now that I'm fairly certain all partitions are healthy( thank you) I think I will move back to a larger data partition, pop in an sd card and just enjoy the Nook and continue to learn as I go by following your work and suggestions. As an aside, I have had zero performance issues with the CM 10 nightlies beyond a tiny bit of lag here and there and continue to be amazed that there is so much life in the older hardware. Again, thank you.
You may want to try USB mass storage rather than MTP. Go to settings, storage, menu, USB computer connection, and check off mass storage rather than MTP. MTP can be flaky sometimes. After you plug in the cable, you need to go to the notification area and enable the computer connection.

Yes that has been my experience with that protocol with other devices over the years. A day or so ago with usb enabled the PC wouldn't recognize the NC. Last night I went back to the 5/1 partitioning scheme, popped in a 32 gig sd card and went to bed. Tonight I turned on usb storage and my machine picked up the sd card immediately, and I was able to drag and drop a few music files in typical fashion. While the issue of not being able to access that "internal" media storage still perplexes me (I can be extremely O/C about tech working the way it's "supposed to,)" I'm simply not going to sweat 1 gig when I added an additional 32. As my experience with the Nook Color grows, more will be revealed. Thanks

Sony Xperia Z Video Playback Issue

Hello,
I have had my Sony Xperia Z almost a week now and just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced the same problem as me.
The day after I got my phone I decided to load some tv episodes and films onto my device (32gb SD card) to see whether it will play MKV, MP4 etc. Initially I was very impressed as they all worked. I went to bed happy that night that my new expensive purchase would play most files with ease.
Heres the strange part, the next day on my lunch break at work I thought i'd watch one of the videos I loaded onto my phone. To my disbelief NONE of the files I had transferred over would play and gave me the message 'Cannot Play Video'.
After deleting and reloading the files again would not play. I noticed 2 files in the SD card folder called 'default-capability.xml' & 'customized-capability.xml'. I deleted these files and transferred the videos onto my phone once more and the videos worked again. But again stopped working after a small period of time. Could it be these files have something to do with my problem?
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any advice would be great.
Cheers
Adam
Nothing to do with this 2 files, try another sd card.

Tried the micro SD in my gf's phone and all the files work. Think i've been sold a duff card!
Thanks for your help, probably should of checked this before posting but at least I know where to come in future
Cheers
I also have been sold an dud card from eBay. Was supposed to be 32gb turns out it's only 2gb.
Never had a problem playing videos on it, but did when playing music.
Loaded a few albums on it and they would play as if they were being played on fast forward, play for a few seconds then skip to the next song.
Won't be buying one from eBay again.
For video and high quality audio files you need class10 microsd card.

Yep, this one was supposed to be a class 10.
Will buy a proper one from a store or Amazon.
SD card
Sorry for this post, but I bought my phone one month ago and I had never the need to use a SD card, but in this case the files in my phone are really huge, so I decided for a SD card class 10 16 GB, when I inserted to my phone the first thing I noticed was the storage capacity, it was 15 GB of the "16ยจ I bought. Anyway, I transfered all my files to the SD without formating previously and everything went all right, well, only pictures and music, but when I played the full HD videos the error "cannot play" appeared, so I checked the SD and noticed those two files 'default-capability.xml' & 'customized-capability.xml, when I opened them and there was only two lines of information, nothing important IMO, but I read this thread and decided to deleted them and the videos already worked!!
The good thing about this is that the 2 files after was deleted returned to the SD card (suspicious) but I opened again and now the files are full of information, like the model, resolution of screen and a lot of things that I dont really understand, maybe, if you want, I can share those files so you can paste to your SD card so the error "cannot play video" dissapear forever :highfive:
PS sorry for my bad English, I am from Mexico
hlw bro have you solved your problm??
