Well...that freaked me out... - Nexus 4 General

I'm sitting on the couch...look over at the phone and the screen is off, but there's all these weird yellow-ish, orange-ish vertical lines all over the screen. Power button does nothing. Plug it into the puter and adb reboot-bootloader it and the bootloader looks all jacked up. All kinds of crazy colored bars going up and down and a funky, zoomed in resolution.

I DIDN'T EVEN TOUCH IT!
I get into TWRP, which also looks pretty jacked up and flash my most recent backup.
Everything's fine again.
What in the SERIOUS **** was that?!!?!

Its probably a screen problem. So its RMA time lol

same exact thing happened to me twice in the first month I had the phone (had mine since Nov). I was running cm10 at the time, freaked me out pretty bad. screen was flickering too afterward, I had to reboot a few times to get it back to normal. after the second time I went back to stock completely (no root, locked boot loader, stock recovery) and never had this or any problem again

Hmm...
Yes, I am undervolted. I was running AOKP Mako jb-mr1_build_3 when it happened. Flashed my most recent backup and it's fine. I was running build 2 of that ROM when I made the backup.
I tried to flash back to the build 3 version of this ROM after getting the phone back to normal but was getting the UI force close thing (flash a ROM or kernel and, when you reboot, you get repeated, rapid fire UI force closes...anyone else have that happen?) so I'm just going to leave it at build 2 for now.

That's what happen when you underclock

Definitely sounds like an UV issue. Do you have a nominal or fast processor? What kernel and UV settings you running?
Sent from my Nexus 4

Was it .. hot?

Hot? No.
It isn't underclocked, it's undervolted.
Well...it was. I put it back to stock. Hopefully this won't happen anymore.

My phone does the same about every other week...

I've had my screen flicker for several minutes before. I was undervolted and on CM at the time. Putting it to sleep and turning it back on, didn't help. However after a restart it was perfectly fine again. I undervolted back to the same level right after and am currently running it at that level (been about 2 months) and it's never done it again.
I don't recall the screen ever changing colors like you mentioned though. I have a fast binned cpu and my kernel was motely. I'm thinking it was just a glitch with CM.

I've noticed that one out of maybe 100 wake-ups doesn't turn the screen on when you press the power button. One day I left it like this for 30 seconds thinking it will come on, but instead the screen started fading to white from black - sort of like the brown starts on burning paper - and then when I pressed the power button again the screen was flickering. Seems to be a custom ROM/Kernel thing.

Fast reboot in 7 seconds

Hello,
I just got my third really fast reboot if I can even call it a reboot.
The fastreboots (I'll call it FRB from now on.) always happened when the CPU was really busy
The phone were getting laggy and didn't respond anymore and the screen shut off but the 4 softbuttons still lit up.
The bootanimation was starting and stopped like 7 seconds later and the display showed the lockmenu.
the first time this happened I just thought "wow, what was a freaking fast reboot"
the second time I just said wtf and accidentally checked the uptime.. 2 days! the phone just rebooted but is still showing 2 days?
and now the 3rd FRB, checked the uptime -> almost 4 days
What the hell? Is someone else experiencing this?
All active apps are stopped and everything is just like a normal reboot
ROM: CyanogenMod 6 08172010 Nightly
Kernel: 2.6.35-925mV-1113MHz-BFS-SVS-AIX-720p-Monks-081610 (max clock: 1036; min: 245; interactive)
And I think I also noticed a FRB before using this kernel and a previous CM6 nightly
I've had this happen too. The only thing I noticed is it happened after my phone had been idle for a long period of times. Its happened roughly 3-5 times for me. As a windows user I admit it didn't concern me much lol
It's not a reboot, it's Android restarting. The back-end Linux stuff stays up. Pretty obvious when it's the boot animation you see, not the solid X.. And as you say, it's pretty fast.
And yes I suspect there's a watchdog.. If the whole system is stalled for > N seconds, restart it. Waze does this to me once or twice a week.
Yeah, this has been happening to me a lot more lately, especially when I start installing apps from the market after a wipe and restore, it messes up the market. It also messes up on Titanium backup. Getting very annoying.
Has happened on Enoms, and LeoFroyo ROMs.

Yes, makes sense
I've been calling it a random/soft reboot and it has been happening with eclair as well.
Happens for me too, got this stuff twice, both at car's dock with GPS and navigation on.
Isn't this kind of reboot a documented thing? How comes?
EDIT: not OC/UV, enom's 2.11.3.
because it seems its only mainly happening on custom roms lol
I don't think it's the custom rom. At least not enom's one, because of his conservative kernel policy. Looks more like something with overheating (both times it happened for me I've used a car dock with 3g,bt,gps on and charging)...

Not overheating for me.. It's anything that bogs the system, as previously explained. But of course there could be many paths to this issue.
It's not the roms....I'm totally stock running FRF91 with absolutely no root access enabled and this happened to me yesterday. It caught me off guard too because like others said my phone went into a state of sluggish responsiveness and then all of a sudden it jumped right to my boot animation, no big X. about 5-8 seconds later I was back at the homescreen watching my Widgets load up like they do when the phone first boots up.

Quite an old thread here, never the less: any chance of reproducing this without ADB acces but on the device itself? Quite handy when playing around with the new T-Mobile Theme Changer and instead of a lenghty reboot reloading the shell would suffice. Eh...?
Sense ROMs have the feature ("Hot restart"), so it's reproducible.

Well, you can stop the shell via terminal on the phone but then you'd have no way to start it again...
A week ago I used a CM Nightly and noticed the 'Suspend' mode in the powerbutton menu (when you hold the powerbutton). I pressed it and it kinda rebooted like this. Not sure if it's what I meant in post 1 .. and it's not in the nightlies anymore

There are a few apps on the market that can do this, it's called hot booting (Search for hot boot). The only one I can see that is free is root toolbox but I couldn't get it to work on my S2. Quickboot plus has the option and it works just fine.

screen is acting weird

Im rooted, and oc at 1100. Havent done anything different lately except added Softlocker. Its kind of unresponsive. I have to hold down longer sometimes, but not by much. (just enough to dive me nuts lol). Any ideas why?
Not that i have an answer but.. mine is the same way for the first several minutes(i don't know how many) after i re-boot. It only started happening after i OC'd to 1100. Usually it gets to being normal after a while. Yes it is annoying..
Do you have soft locker installed? After I deleted it and rebooted it seems fine. So far at least lol.
This is a know issue if you use one of the OC kernels. Just turn your screen off and wait a few seconds and then turn it back on. Your screen will be back to normal.
No, I've had that. It's slightly different. Softlocker removal worked for me.

CM7 Root Issue - Screen Flashing When Turned On

Hi There,
Noob here. I did a CM7 (update-cm-7.0.3-encore-signed) root and everything seemed to go fine except when I turn on the unit, the screen flashes a white color. This is not the entire screen. It does it for a spit second then loads.
I thought maybe I screwed up the device, so I did a factory reset using CWR which did as was supposed to. Once factory reset, it didnt do the screen flash.
I then went and reinstalled CM7 with the same issue occurring.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Herschel
That's normal, nothing to worry about. It does that when it switches boot screens.

That will do nothing for the OP.
Is there a fix for that, it doesn't look good to eyes, when the screen suddenly flashes in full bright white, after the screen starts again after a timeout.

You two are talking about a totally different issue than the OP, but TainT's post should answer your question, pb. If screen-on animations are not your issue, you'll have to clarify.
Also, as a PSA: installing CM7 is not rooting. You may have rooted (unnecessarily) in the process of installing CM7, but not any and every modification to an Android device is a "root." Rooting is the process of gaining Super-User access to an Android OS on which you were previously denied it. When you install CM7, you are running a completely different operating system in which you already have root access.
For me the screen on/off animations are disabled, still when the screen timeout or when I press the power button, the screen flashes very brightly for a brief time. It looks very ugly and painful at night when the screen flashes.
This is not a device issue as this happens with CM7 only.
I hope that I am clear in explaining the issue now.
Sent from my NookColor
Sorry, I don't get anything like that--if I wake the NC with either power or 'n' it just comes on at normal brightness. I still get the flash horizontally across the screen when powering on the NC, if it was actually powered down (what the OP was talking about). Otherwise, no bright white lights.
What CM7 are you running? 7.0.3? The beta 7.1? A nightly? SD or eMMC?
7.0.3 from emmc.
Sent from my NookColor
Well, you could try grabbing a nightly, or the original 7.1 beta. I know I don't get any weird flashes with those, but I don't really remember if I did with 7.0.3.
Or you can wait--there should be a stable build with the new kernel before too long. I ran the 7.1 beta for over a week, OCed with dal's 5/23 kernel, and it was rock solid stable.

Lag + occasional freezing

Sup,
I experience lag frequently. A lot of times I can feel something in the phone spinning or vibrating as it comes out of the lag. the vibration isn't as rigorous as the notification vibrations. Also sometimes it will lag but not come out of it and completely freeze then restart itself. The freeze/restart seems to happen when surfing the web.
I'm running serendipity 7 build 2. Its happened on serendipity 6.x also. Not sure if its rom related or just my phone failing. Anyone experience this?
I should add that I have 9.31gb available out of 13 total.

I've had similar lag and reboot issues on Serendipity 7 don't know why, but you can always just try another ROM and see if the problem persists.

A couple things that come to mind, one is the vibrating sounds like something is F/C'ing. Take a look at your applications, what is running, do you know what you're trying to run when it vibrates? Also take a look at your system resources, I get lag if I have too many items running and system mem gets too low
"Most" issues tend to be software related so that is where I would focus my attention. If all else fails, reinstall your ROM

It happens the most when I am browsing the web. I have been using xscope for a long time. First the free version and now pro version since it was faotd on amazon. It happened with both versions. although xscope could be the problem its not the only culprit cuz it happens when im not browsing the web also. Lag & auto shut down
My captivate with serendipity 7 initially seemed perfect. But after a couple of weeks of usage, it started becoming slow. I face quite a bit of lag, automatic shutdowns and poor battery. I do have a few apps running in the background, but there was no lag when i was using cognition 4 or CM7. When my phone shuts down automatically, I have to take the battery out and put it back in to restart it. Holding just the power button doesn't switch it on.

Razor Phone 2 randomly freezes

Hi my Razer 2 will just randomly freezes. By that I mean sound will continue to work, the screen will remain on passed it's 5 min inactivity cutoff point, but the screen and the side buttons( all 3 buttons) will not respond to any input. I'm not sure how long this will last but I know it has stuck that way for more than 15 mins. Most of the time I just immediately reboot. And about 25% of those times it will still be unresponsive once it comes back on. But most of the time it fixes the issue till it decides to do it again. It does this about 2 times a day.
I'm not rooted, unlocked, nor have I flashed anything to my phone. It is still bone stock. The phone is only about 2 months old and I'm on the latest update.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Exactly the same issue here, stock completely but will crash on nearly every app I try to run. Screen is so unresponsive it is painful, playing Pokemon Go is a horrendous experience. Taking my handset to Three today to see if they can give me a replacement.
Mine doesn't do it on every apk. But when it does I'm usually watching a video...... Haha no not porn.... Lmao. And the other weird thing about it is when I reboot it it will show the splash screen then boot animation then it cuts the boot animation short and pops up a very basic very old school window requiring me to enter my password. So I enter it and it goes right back to the boot animation where it left off. And finishes running the animation then before I can go to my "Home" screen I have to input my password again. But this time is normal password screen and I have it set up to require it at that point. It's the first generic password screen in the middle of the boot animation that puzzles me. It just started doing this about 3 to 4 days ago.
Had a previous phone that would randomly freeze.
The solution was to enable developer mode. (Settings about phone and tap on build number 10 times)
Head back and find developer options.
Set Window animation scale to off
Set Transition animation scale to off
And set Animator duration scale to off
Restart phone.
Hope that helps.

I've faced the same. Three are not only swapping my handset for a Mi 8, but they have upped my contract benefits to the top level, and reduced my costs by £10 a month. I know the Mi 8 specs slightly lower than the Razer, but I'm fed up with this

That's one of the first things I do when I get a new phone, flash a rom, or just generally anytime I have to set it up from scratch. So it's not that. I guess I'm gonna flash the kernel in these forums that has root capabilities and twrp built in. See if that helps..... I like the performance it has during mobile gaming. PUBG runs on the higest/best video setting and speed like a boss.

You would have to do a hard reset.
When asked how the memory card is to be used select as portable storage.
Not to be provocative, but why have the option of adaptive storage if it doesn't function as it should on this phone? I've never had this issue with any other device. Personally I'm extremely disappointed at Razer. No updates since the Feb security patch, we are now in June. Razer forums show very little advancement and support, and we know the mobile division has been scaled down significantly.
I would have thought this device could be a devs dream, but alas it appears long forgotten

I agree. Not having any update since feb's security patch shows Razers laziness or lack of concern for their supposedly high end mobile gaming device. Not a confidence booster going into a round of PUBG knowing it may freeze at any moment.
It just froze again for no apparent reason.
And by the way I don't even have a micro SD card in the phone.
This is weird I've never had any of the issues you've described in either my RP2 or RP1. I would contact Razer send it back or swap.

Same. Haven't even had it for a month. Completely stock, latest update, freezes completely when opening either version of Chrome (Canary and Stock) sometimes, and forcing a reboot usually gets it frozen AGAIN before I even unlock it, which makes me force another reboot. Not to mention I think I'm already noticing a dead pixel on the screen. It hasn't even been a month.
I did a factory reset in the stock recovery about 4 or 5 days ago. It's been running beautifully since. No lag no freezing just running as smooth as a unicorn sliding down a rainbow. So I guess I picked up some kind of malware or something along my journey. I've gone to the "dark web" a few times. Just snooping around. But I was safe about it. I used a VPN and ran thru tor browser. But it could have been there that I picked up something. Who knows. But what I do know is it's back to as smooth as it was out of the box after a full factory reset.
same here on rooted
it mostly crash when I want to watch videos on Facebook or similar pages.
it does on stock/rooted stock/gsi and i think it's vendor problem
Moving back to Internal storage seems to have done the trick, especially as my SD card has been disconnected several times now.
Same issues with Radom and sometimes more often freezing as to where I have to hold power down until it reboots.last time it did it was a few minutes ago I was trying to watch a clip about oppo 7 pro video about 5g on the chrome search app it played about 15 seconds and solid froze my phone everytime I tried to play it.it worked fine in YouTube app
My phone is been having this issue lately.
Seems to have started only in the last week or so..
I am running the custom kernal and the "stock deodexed and zipalign" rom.
It could also be that I've rooted...?
I don't want to go back to stock rom so I live with the random frozen screen once a day and since people here have said it happens on stock.
Phone has never been dropped and it isn't hot when it happens.View attachment 4803124

Mine has done this a few times in the past week. Stock rooted, tried stock kernel and arter's kernel with same result. It's only happening to me while using chrome and videos in Facebook.
Running complete stock Three ROM, no rooting. Chrome took an update over the weekend and now the phone locks up when watching video. Works fine on Samsung browser on the phone, just Chrome.
Might finally get around to flashing and getting LDAC working on this thing....
