This problem has been reported on the Samsung Galaxy Note, S II, Droid DNA and others, but I didn't know it was also a problem on the HTC First until I got mine. Whenever my music goes to a low volume with my headphones on, the sound just mutes. It comes back when the music goes louder. If I increase my volume, it cuts off less. At full volume, it does not cut out at all. I have no problems playing through the speakers.
One needs to listen to audio with short silences to be able to notice it. Some say it is related to Beats Audio, with the problem going away if Beats Audio is turned off; I don't think that is a possibility on the HTC First, though.
I use my phone mostly to listen to music and streaming radio, so this is a deal breaker for me. Are any of you experiencing the same problem?
i can not confirm the problem.
i tested my HTC with BOSE and Pioneer headphones and do not have any problems with both.
no matter if i play music loud or very low volume.
will test it tomorrow with my monster beats and let u know.
HTC Support on Sound Cut-Off Issue
For the sake of completeness, I will let you know that I called HTC Support about this sound cut-off issue. The person on the phone was very nice and tried to help me for some 40 minutes.
The bottom line is that he couldn't reproduce the issue in the few songs he played (which didn't surprise me). He made some note for the developers but I don't think anything will come out of it.
In the meantime, I found a good song to test this strange behavior: "brainstew" by Green Day. Plug your headphones to your HTC First and listen to the first 30 seconds at low volume. It you hear distortion as the sound volume changes, please let me know (right now it seems that I'm the only one noticing this).
Thanks!
I'm seeing this as well. Has nobody else seen this?

I personally don't use my nexus for listening to music using headphones. Just read this excellent testing done by Anandtech and wanted to share it with you all. He has tested with 4.4.1 update and the results are the same.

Just a quote from page 5.
The conclusion I pull from this is that both the G2 and the Nexus 5 have the exact same flaw right now. However, the G2 has attempted to hide it by reducing the maximum output level of their headphone amplifier. The Nexus 5 can play louder, but only with far more distortion. Given this I would expect there to be an update to the Nexus 5 at some point that lowers the maximum headphone level to something closer to the G2.
However this doesn't mean that the Nexus 5 is certainly worse to use with headphones. The top 3 settings are ones I would avoid due to the left channel issue, but I might avoid the top 1-2 settings on the G2 as well. If we consider 1% THD+N to be the maximum allowable level, that leaves 8 volume steps on the Nexus 5 that are usable. The G2 has 9 steps that are available to you, and 10 if you consider 0.03% THD+N in one ear to be OK (it probably is).
In the end, the G2 won't play as loud as the Nexus 5 will, but you don't want to play that loud anyway. It has more usable volume steps than the Nexus 5, and otherwise very similar numbers. I'll be interested to see if either of them make further changes to their maximum output levels to remove this issue.

the same with 4.4.2 ?
I would rate the headphone out quality mediocre at best.

According to the empiric tests done on Anandtech, it is actually excellent as long as you avoid the top three or so volume slots. They just overboosted for those top spots, so a channel clips BADLY. Skip them, and the quality is fine - and this backs up my experiences. Spotify extreme quality downloaded songs through Shure SE535's is fantastic, since I never go past about one more than middle volume. Through the same headset, listening to crappy downloaded podcasts can reveal some issues, since, on public transit, I sometimes have to get into one or two slots down from max volume.

We have opposite findings then. I never go no where near the upper levels. Sound is not clean at all coming from my UE Triple Fi 10s. Gonna give it another listen in a few.

Does this apply also for the bluetooth-transfered audio?
I've noticed this using the upper few slots while flying. Good info!
I imagine the top volume levels are more or less reserved for using the speaker in loud environments. In that situation the mono speaker is not going to suffer any channel issues and though it may get distorted at least you will hear you're ringtone or notification better.
Over 75% volume with headphones is pretty deafening. If not you can always boost equalization across the board to increase volume music volume.
nice
good
About sound quality and music,
Did any of you got DSP tunneling to work?
For me battery drained as usual, 3.5%-5/ while screen off and phone awake all time, mediaserver wakelock. Means no deep sleep while music playing and screen off.

Running Spotify or Doggcatcher with screen off shows me 300mhz constant use. No deep sleep. With 3G, no wifi, all sync on, etc., it doesn't use more than 5-6% per hour, though, so it's not a big deal to me.
How and when are these jokers gonna fix this problem now?? Is it even possible to fix it through software? Did no one do any testing before releasing this piece of crap?
Try Noozoide Eizo-Rewire Pro
At the suggestion of another, I tried the free Eizo app listed above. It has many sound processor settings that you can apply separately to Line Out, Internal Speaker or Bluetooth. I love it. It also eliminates any distortion at high volumes with the proper settings. My settings for line out:
Deliver balanced, natural sound (processor enabled).
Digital Presets (audiophile)
Volume Enhancer Engine (checked...effect strength "strong")
Increase monitor size (checked only when plugged into powered speakers)
Create VSUR (virtual surround) (checked...effect.."studio II")

I think its a hardware issue. G2 has the similar issue like the article says. They can mask it like the G2 but it will be there i think.
But this issue is only when using the top 3 volume levels. I think the one notch below these provides great volume and the phone performs great then.
Is there any fix for the issues reported by Anandtech yet, or any reply from Google / LG?
I just recently bought a Nexus 6, and not to long after I bought it my phones volume started to get very low. When I was on a phone call and switched to speaker, the phone starts the audio off as low, but then gets higher after a few seconds. Now when I listen to music or watch netflix, the audik starts off high at full volume, but then goes very low as if the phone had a Automatic Leveler. Is there anyone way to fix this ?

you are on stock? i didnt experience it on stock, but did on aosp. on aosp its a bug, that was fixed by a few developers.
Im pretty shocked by the nexus 6 speakers.
1. Speaker phone only works on the top speaker.
2. Anything from the lowest volume till about 2/3rds is nicley scaled then it just jumps in loudness in the last 3 to 4 clicks.
3. The stock sound is shocking bad ! Sounds like they forgot to balance bass and treble.
4. My headphone jace only seems to work with some jacks, an aux lead refuses to work in all 3 of my work vans and my old HTC headsets but works with iphone headsets and some of my aony headsets ( these all worked in my N5 )
5. Where the freekin' EQ ! Really google cant make a EQ letalone a good camera app !!!!
I am on stock. No root, no unlocked bootloader.
The funny thing is, when in place my hand over the front camera lens, and curved around the front, the volume goes back up as if there was a auto level function. If I take my hand off of that speaker, it goes back down because I am in a quite room. Something's not right with that..
I'm not rooted and I have similar issues. When I get phone calls or texts the volume starts out really low then gets high and I can't stand it. Seems to have just started doing this. Same thing when I'm talking to someone, I get a call, I answer it and I can barely hear them then 1 or 2 seconds later it's fine. Driving me crazy. Would love to get this fixed.

I've never faced such issue. After googling a little bit I found that it might be a software bug. some people are also facing sound drop/fading in some cases. Have a look at This Thread
Hello!
I have a problem with my new Xiaomi Mi 8. I would like to confirm if its only my device doing that or other devices too. Its running Android 9 with Miui 10.2.3.0.
When I set the lowest possible volume (not muted) the static noise is louder than the sound coming out of built in speaker or earphones connected via jack. It is pretty noticable even when the sound is set to high and there are e.g. silent parts of song. It does not matter which app I use (youtube, spotify, default music app). When I connect my bluetooth headset everything is okay and the sound is clear.
For testing purposes I am using song Kaleo - Way We Go Down. I find it most noticable there. The song even breaks and stops playing for a few milliseconds in the begining. Can you guys somehow test this issue and reply here with the results? I want to see if I am the only one having this problem.
Btw when I connect my earphones to my 4 years old iphone 6 the sound is crystal clear.
Thank you.
