[Q] Rooted KFHD 7" rename w/o amazon account? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there!
I have a simple question: How can I rename my kindle(the "My Kindle" in the upper left side of the screen)?
The problem is that my kindle is blacklisted and cannot be registered with a amazon account. That is not a problem for me, because I do not wish to buy any amazon content.
P.S.: I have a rooted KFHD and a fair experience with android&linux

So more than 50 views and no answer...this must be a tough one

i've already looked into build.prop but it was a no go. the link you provided is good but, like I said in the original post, my kindle is blacklisted and cannot be registered to my amazon account. thanks for the tip anyway. got others?

Sorry.. I'm not familiar with the circumstances of a blacklisted device. Short of a factory reset or using the Kindle Fire First Aide to reset the device to the initial setup where you create an account and enter your name, I have no other advice.
Good Luck!
You know, you could always install Omega Statusbar which would change the look thus removing your name. (Visually, at least)

it seems omega statusbar doesn't display my notifications. thanks anyway

Use jelly bean status bar it hides the name
sent from my unrooted kindle fire hd

it's the same as omega status bar

Hi there,
Ive just grabbed a Nook HD for my Mom for christmas, We got it running to discover all her prior purchased .mobi books will not work.. So I took it to factory, rooted etc did the OOBE bypass and discovered its called "TESTs Nook" now.. To cut a long story short.. How do I either change the user name or add another account as its just got a circle that spins for litterally hours (unless it restarts!)
Thanks

You can't change the test name. And you can't add an account that has B&N access because the device is not registered. But I think you can just add a profile by tapping the test name at the top.

If you skip OOBE, you cannot change the Test's name. You also cannot create another profile, as you have explained, the waiting icon will just spin for hours, until the end of time, or when the battery dies out (whichever comes first).
If you'd like to change the Test's name, or create another profile, you need to register your Nook device. You cannot skip OOBE. I'm not too familiar with the Nook HD (I'm only accustomed to the HD+), but do you need to skip OOBE to root? If not, then go ahead register (remember the credentials, they are extremely important, you will not be able to register the device again without the same credentials) and then root. After that you can probably get a reader off Google Play which reads .mobi (of course, I'm sure that was your plan all along).
Best of luck, and unfortunately with skipping OOBE, you cannot create profiles or change TEST's name.
All the best.

Ways to access books/pdfs outside of Kindle?

Ok. the topic title was a little confusing even for me. I appoligize. I have a brand new kindle fire hd 8.9. Rooted it yesterday with a few hitches but those were mostly due to my own silly mistakes. Regardless, i got it up and running but have ran into a sort of problem. The way to access books, by how I know it, is though Kindle Home 'app'. Which takes me to the original screen with the carousel and everything. But that seems like a really round about way to access everything. Is there a way/app/etc to choose specific books to simply add to the main screen? (I'm using GO HD, but have been checking both to see which I prefer) It just seems a bit silly to need to go through hoops rather then be able to add 'Books, Docs, etc' as seperate things on the main screen. Or even just add a specific book itself. I was asking simply cause it makes it easier/faster to access textbooks like this.
If its impossible thats fine too, but I'm new to this all and can't seem to find anything of this sort. Hope its not too dumb a question.
There isn't an application in KFHD to go directly to Books, but curiously there is a Documents path. I think it is because the DRM(protection) that almost all Amazon books have. You can convert your own books to Movi with a PC or Linux program called Calibre(whisper: "even unprotect them")) to make them visible in the Book shelf.
But if you want them to be more accessible and better reading, you can go to Cool Reader, an app that lets you configure all aspects of a book presentation, much better than Kindle. Inside Cool Reader there is a directory browser to find the books wherever they are, The worse is that it can't read DRM protected books, but I've whispered you the program to jump that fence(search google "how to remove DRM from Amazon". You have the right to do it if you have paid money for the book....But not all countries allow that.

unspunreality,
Absolutely, you can view just about any document on the Kindle. If I understand you correctly, you would like to have direct access to books from your main desktop, is that correct? Kind of like a Windows or Linux desktop where you are able to place documents and shortcuts to documents directly on the desktop.
If you are looking for software, the following are what we consider the top 5 document readers for the Kindle Fire HD Series:
1. Google Docs
2. Quickoffice Pro
3. Olive Office Premium
4. Camscanner - PDF Creator
5. Openoffice Document Reader
The original Kindle Carousel stores the history of open documents through the carousel which are stored in the order of last opened.
The after market launchers allow you to place anything on the main desktop by long pressing the document and then moving to the desktop.
You are also able to create what are called 'containers' on the desktop, these are really just folders created on the desktop. You can download and install a File Manager like ES File Explorer or Root Explorer which both allow you to create symbolic links or 'shortcuts' from within the application.
Finally, you can also install the Dropbox or Google Drive application on your Kindle and on your office PC, then create shortcuts to the document folders on each network drive - this option allows seamless integration between your Kindle desktop and your office/home PC desktop.
Does this answer your question or did I misunderstand your question?
My favorite reader is ebookdroid. If you go in an tweak the performance settings to use all your cores and prerender pages it is significantly quicker than any other reader I've tried. Plus It'll scan directories and add them to your shelf.

You can shortcut to documents using a FM app like Astro. You can also use this to create shortcuts to books as well if you have root access, i think.
Something ive noticed is that if you open a book in the sdcard/books folder using es explorer and choose the kindle app, the kindle app will open fine. If you do this once when you first boot, suddenly the kindle app opens from the app drawer when you try it. Ive only tested this using Nova Launcher Prime but it should work in other launchers. Now all we need to do is create a script that opens and closes a book during boot, this should then allow the kindle books app to be accessed from any launcher instead of using the current approach of going through the 'Home' Launcher.

Katalystik,
We have been looking around for people who can recommend features and you just gave us a great idea for our software. Are you interested in a Startup Manger? We could integarte this feature into our software Kindle Fire First Aide. What I mean by a Startup Manger is an program that would allow you to setup a scenario that would in turn design a script and insert it to the proper location. So, it would work like this, on Monday Wednesday and Friday open a book named "Upon Awakening" or open the book after 8am if the tablet has been left on. Is this the idea you had in mind? This would be very easy a very easy program to write.
Any other ideas or features you would like to see on the Kindle?
Katalystik:
Your approach returns to the last book open, it not lets you to search from there in the book shelf (the Books application). Even so it is a good trick, but appropriate only for a single owner, not for the Kindle shared with the whole family, each with their own book to read ...
There is not need to open the book from ES Explorer nor resetting the Kindle, only open a book from the Books application and press house. Press the "Amazon Kindle" icon and then you are back.
This happens because if you press the house button the app(any app) then waits silently in the background. On the other side, if you press back it obviously returns to the program you were coming. But programs left open in the background consume memory and resources...
Amazon has provided short cuts for all the free aspects of the Kindle, but not for the book shelf, that is not simply a folder. If you copy a DRM book to the Documents folder it don't work. And there Amazon knows good who are his enemies: epubs.
Correction: If you open a DRM book (prc) or mobi from other folder than Books with ES Explorer, it works fine with Kindle app.
I've learned the proper way to go directly to read a particular book! My launcher is ADW but I think it can serve for others.
It is simple and always has been there: In ES Explorer put your finger on the file you want and keep it until it opens a long list of options. Slide it down and find "short-cut" and press on it.
Then, when you return to the main screen of your launcher you'll notice a new icon. press it and select the application that will open, but do not forget to mark the square to open it always with the same program.
Then you can create a folder to put them all in, but that step is different for each launcher and you have to investigate it.
Thanks for the replies. Havent been around. Got class now but with all these options Im certain Ill find something nice to use. Using the kindle books app felt so.. ugh, wrong and backwards. Im glad to be told that I have a lot more options now though.

I use Moon+ Reader Pro. Within your bookshelf it will allow you to send a shortcut to the desktop. I actually have my book on my dock. I click it and it opens straight to Moon+ ready to read.
Here i made a guide for this and it works great. Heres the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2146269

[Q] Parental Controls

About 5 months ago my mom bought a kindle fire hd, she has been loving it...
I rooted it and set go launcher ex as the default launcher, and as far as I know she has never had a pin number or parental controls password set up, just her @kindle.com account.
But now, all of a sudden, her kindle will not let her connect with wifi, uninstall, install, update, or do anything really because it keeps on asking for a parental controls password.
She swears up and down she never set a password. We have tried her amazon password, and any pin numbers she might have once used... all to no avail.
I've already done a bit of google searching and the only solutions I can find are to deregister it from her amazon account, then reregister, or factory reset. I really don't want to have to factory reset.
But when she signed into her amazon.com account there is no kindle listed?? Is there even such a thing as an @kindle.com domain? This is really frustrating me and I just want it to work.
Thanks.
more
I've done quite a bit of reading up online.
If she doesn't know her password, factory reset is the only way?
I was hoping I would be able to go in with root explorer and change a permission to disable the parental controls that way. Is there really no file I can go in and change?
update
OK I went in with x-plore file manager and renamed parentalcontrols.apk and parentalcontrols.odex to .bak, and rebooted.
No longer getting parental controls warning asking for a password when I touch to connect to wifi... however... the wifi button doesn't work now, it just stays on "off".
Even when I try to end around to get wifi working by going through an app, it'll just load forever and never let me connect to wireless.
I am positive there is more to be done, but I am far from an expert and I really would like to have a little advice.
U might fix it by deleting the folder that parental control uses in /data/data, not sure exactly which one it is, but it probably says something like com.amazon.parentalcontrols or something. I'm pretty sure doing a factory reset will also do it, just backup the data off your data folder first if you have any settings for things u want to transfer over. Hope this helps, I don't use kindle os so I can't figure out what the parental controls internal name is, so sorry I can't be of more help in that area.

TY, I needed something like this to point me in the right direction, appreciate it.
She took it home with her today so I probably will not get to touch it for the next week or so, but I will check back and let you know if that fixes it.

[Q][ROOTED]Amazon Kindle Fire (3rd Gen, 2013) [soho]

Hi all...
I have an Amazon Kindle Fire 7" I think, its 3rd Gen (2013) SOHO running FireOS 11.4.5.2.
Rooted using FireRooter & Fastboot Cable...
I need help with the wall papers... In FireOS 11.3.2.5, I was able to browse the FRAMEWORK-RES.APK using 7zip, to the RES > RAW-HDPI and change every single one of the images inside to what I wanted. Worked Great!!! Except with 11.3.2.5 after initial boot up, and showing the modified Wallpapers, if I let the display sleep again, I would be presented with the constant Amazon AD Picture that says "Make sure your Kindle is registered, blah blah blah...." ................ Well it is.... Even without the Wallpapers changed, it still does this.
With FireOS 11.4.5.2, the Wallpapers do NOT exist in the RES > RAW-HDPI ... RAW-HDPI isn't there either. So, in my line of thinking, would placing these images from the 11.3.2.5 FireOS into the 11.4.5.2 FireOS Framework-res.apk, would I get to see the modified Wallpapers?
If not, where on earth did they move the wallpapers to? They MUST be Somewhere in there... Which APK? I have no clue. I can still change the BootUp Logo to whatever I want in 11.4.5.2... I can even change the home screen background to whatever image I want. But I would REALLY like to get back custom wallpapers if I can simply find out where they are stored now.
So...
Question 1) Where is the wallpapers stored in FireOS 11.4.5.2?
Question 2) Even with XPosed Modules enabled to block system\amazon updates, it STILL wants to download FireOS 11.4.5.4 ... How do I stop it from doing that?
Question 3) If I have to revert back to FireOS 11.3.2.5, how do I stop it from displaying that stupid annoying "Make Sure your Kindle is registered, blah blah" and show the modified Wall Papers after waking up the screen?
Thanks All!

I'm not to good with tech I'm getting better as I have started working with Linux computers including raspberry pi.
Is there any way to root the Amazon Kindle 5.4.0.0?. I don't care if it's temp root I just need a way to disable many of Amazon's features. I'm not interested in getting new ROMS or installing another OS.
Any one have ideas?

I've been searching like crazy the last week to try & Root this device. Everything I've seemed to find for 5th Gen version is for earlier OS (5.0.1 - 5.1.1)(I have latest OS 5.4.0.1) . I've read in multiple places that reverting back to the earlier OS have completely bricked there 5th Gen. I don't want a brick. I want a better 5th Gen.
Also I've seen different ways to Root for 8HD & 10HD. I even tried one but it wouldn't allow me to press the recover tab at the bottom. It allowed me to cancel it & that was the most of it. All for nothing. This process which I thought would be for the most part easy has become aggravating & extremely frustrating! I don't want to be like everyone else "PLEASE HELP ME", but I understand now how they've come to that conclusion!

At present there is NO root solution (or bootloader exploit) for this device running FireOS 5.3.2.1 and above. Reread that last sentence. Good, now we're done with that.
You can roll back to FireOS 5.4.0.0 and do some modest debloating if that suites your fancy. The Google Play Store can be easily installed on any current build of FireOS v5 giving access to a broad array of apps that may not be well represented in Amazon's store. You can also install an alternate launcher (eg: Nova) with some caveats which will give a different look to the home page/app drawer plus limited gesture support. Beyond that you have an.Amazon tablet running a highly customized version of Android 5.1. Get use to it.

Thanks for your feedback. I tried adding playstore once. Didn't work. I'll try again. By any chance do you have the links to roll back the O.S.? Alternate launcher? Etc... I have tried searching, but seems almost everything I find is for earlier O.S. or for 8HD, 10HD. Would instructions for those work for this one?
