[Q] [Help] ICS black screen on bootup

Hey guys,
My situation is that I'm trying to get a working ICS rom working, but I get a black screen on bootup for both Virtuous Quattro and Ice Cold Sandwich. I've also tried different kernels, but the same thing happens.
What I did:
Reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery
Backup
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Install zip from sd card > Choose zip > Picked my zip here > Confirm
The actual rom installs with no errors or anything... then when I try to reboot, I get the white screen with "htc" in green font, as normal, then it just goes to a black screen. The backlight is on, but the screen is black... softkeys are not lit, either. Like I said, I've reflashed multiple times to no avail. I've seen videos of people on YouTube flashing on IncS, but their devices go straight to the bootloader animation after the htc logo screen.
Anybody encountered this before or know how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Your phone must be rooted before this and also verify your downloaded zip file with checksum to make sure about proper download.

I actually encountered the same problem a few days ago. I realized it was because I flashed an incompatible Kernal zip file. So I reflashed the ROM and rebooted without flashing any kernals and it worked for me.

I have rooted, and have superuser access. I have also redownloaded and checked the md5 sums. I'll try to download it again and test...

I just redownloaded and rechecked the md5 sums, and I still get the black screen. I've also tried no kernel, and tiamat and still nothing :S

have u converted you filesystem to ext4?
btw, what rom was previous? stock one or custom?
and i recommend you to use 4ext recovery instead of CWM

I have to use CWM for now, since I don't have access to fastboot right now (i'll download it later), but how do I check if it's ext4 or not in CWM? And if its not, do you know how to make it ext4?
And i'm using CM7, not stock

if u have CM7 ur filesystem already converted )))
i think the reason of crashes on boots is old version of recovery. try to upgrade urs CWM or install the latest 4ext recovery
It's very easy to change CWm to 4ext: go to http://4ext.net/ and download 4EXT Recovery Updater, install it. With its help u will instal 4ext

I'm not S-OFF, but my bootloader is unlocked... i think it doesn't really matter much in this case if I have/can flash CM7 without issues
I'll try another version of CWM or try 4ext recovery tomorrow sometime

i'm afraid s-on is the reason of ur problems

I completely agree s-on does matter always.

I have the same problem on Quattro.
If you are s on you have to flash via fastboot the boot.img inside the Rom.zip from your wanted rom after flashing Rom via recovery.
Fastboot flash boot boot.img

Indeed sniper is correct. However what I would do, get a rom working then look into becoming s-off. Its so much easier to mod your phone after.

For people who come here looking for answers, basically just open the new ICS rom zip, extract boot.img, cd to that folder in cmd, and type:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
and it should now boot properly.

Or just make s-off one time and flash roms without any necessity to flash boot.img manually

I have HBOOT 2.0, sadly I accidentally updated my original htc and it updated HBOOT as well... and I can't be bothered to downgrade now lol
I'll do it later when I have the time to download the downgrade toolkit

I had a issue with something on my SD card after i wiped my SD and tried the re install it worked.
let me know if that helped.

[Q] Kernel doesn't seem installed and wifi issues

I tried to install the kernel from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1575568
I followed all the instructions and rebooted. Everything seemed to work, the android upgrading screen on boot said more applications than normal so I figured it worked. However, nothing seems different then before. The kernel in the software section in settings is the same as usual. Also, wifi is stuck in "Turning on..." and eventually "Error." What is wrong?

If your on a stock Rom flash a custom Rom and re flash the kernel ...and you'll be overclocked and WiFi will work

The reason your wifi isn't working now is because the bcdhd.ko module is now missing or replaced with a version that doesn't work with the stock kernel.
Ask Google where you can find the stock ICS kernel and download it. In that zip you will have a system/lib/modules/bcdhd.ko file. Copy that to your /system/lib/modules and reboot. Your wifi should start right back up.

I recently got s-off, and I retried installing the kernel. Nothing. Also, wifi still won't work. I replaced that .ko file and it still doesn't work. I don't understand why the kernel won't flash...

I have never done this before. I had one of my friends root and unlock my phone for me. I have a htc vivid. He installed the holics 1.3 version for me and he is in a different country now so I can ask him. My wifi wont work. he sent me a link for a kernel but it says that the installation is aborted. the name of the kernel is:
0816holics-kernel-for-son(pc).zip
but this wont work.
can someone please tell me what to do to start my wifi again?

Are you S- On or S- Off? If you're s- On you have to flash the boot img before flashing the rom. That will fix wifi. If I'm no mistaken you should have a boot img saved in your ad card folder.
You also have to do this via fastboot. Also when you flash the rom you must select the S-On option, if you did you'll find the boot img you must flash in your phones sd or internal storage.

You have to unzip "0816holics-kernel-for-son(pc).zip" and the boot.img is inside
HTC VIVID 4.0.4 SENSE 4.1

Actually that won't work, his phone will boot, but he will still have problems with wifi cuz the rom generates the boot.img acoording to the selections made in the aroma installer so he has to flash the rom and then get the boot.img and flash the rom again. Try using WCX recovery its easier and it let's you flash the boot.img from recovery instead of doing it via fastboot.

Can't flash any kernels

Hey guys, yesterday i got my htc one and decided to root it and to install a custom rom on it. The custom rom i'm using is trickDroid.
I then saw this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255160 and wanted to flash the kernel to be able to use the htc logo.
I Tried flashing the performance zip file from cmw, it worked fine but then when i try to reboot the htc logo appears and then... nothing, the screen remains black...
I tried to flash several different other kernels after having to constantly press volume down and power button for 30 seconds and then to reflash my rom , do one boot and then go back to recovery and flash the kernel... Whenever i try to flash a new kernel it won't boot to the os anymore :/
Does anybody know why and how to fix it?

Hi,
I presume you use the last Trickdroid rom (based on Android 4.2.2), the kernel you want to flash is for Android 4.1.2...
You can try these ones (for Android 4.2.2):

EDIT: I misread your post, you can't flash any kernel . Are you sure you don't try to flash a kernel for AOSP/CM rom, or another 4.1.2 kernel?

[Q] Wifi Modules - how to find the right one?

Fellows gurus..
First let me say that i have been using the search button and google for more than 1 week and all the answers let me to nothing.. so this is it.. time
to ask for help from the people that really know about this..
After cyanongenmod 10 my wifi/bluetooth never starts, keeps in "Turning Wi-Fi on." .
I have already try to flash a new kernel (KangBang-Kernel-v2.0) but still same results.
I think that the problem is with the wifi module, because after cyanongenmod the " /modules" folder disappears, already download tons of bcm4330.ko, bcmdhd & bcm4329.ko push it via abd into /modules restart with no results..
in dmesg i see
"bcmdhd: version magic '3.0.53-g6ac6fc4 SMP preempt mod_unload ARMv7 ' should be '3.0.38KangBang-Kernel-g816ca3b SMP preempt mod_unload ARMv7 '
seems like I need modules from 3.0.38 KangBang-Kernel, but i couldn't find it anywhere.
Any help is appreciated.

Did you use fastboot to flash the boot.IMG?
If you use cm11 or aokp/PAC in the 4.4.2 flavor.. The WiFi modules are built into the boot.IMG...
And the kangbang kernel is for ICS... And maybe cm10... But not cm10.1 or cm11

CM11 installed, unfortunately wifi still not working..
using root explorer i can see that \modules folder doesn´t exist..
maybe my wifi hardware is not working and that why is not installed??
is there any log where i could see if its a hardware problem??

yesterday I try to install [SENSE3.6/ICS] HolicsROM V1.3 Official with Holics Kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1585373)
But after flash room and kernel, phone doesn´t boot.
BAck to CM11 backup.

Update: I update the Hboot to 1.85.2525, reinstall CM11, same result.. NO WIFI..
I can´t understand why in CM11 the "/modules" folder doesn´t exist.

OK, I understand that, but in dmesg i get "wifi driver not loaded" ...
I´m still thinking that is a driver compatibility issue..
