Just discovered that my n7 will not connect through USB anymore. It still charges but the micro USB has become a bit loose, hence the USB prob.
Questions are thus: how long is the RMA turnaround from UK play store?
Or would I be better off to get my mate to solder the micro SD and get on with it.
Tablet is a first batch 8 gig from last July :
Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

IMO those mini-USB connectors are a planned obsolescence feature - they are just too fragile to survive more than a few years (several thousand insertion/removal cycles) for a device that needs to be plugged/unplugged at least once a day.
Well, for charging only you could get a dock.
For communicating with adb in the ROM (not custom recovery) you could do it wirelessly (TCP socket)
For communicating with a custom recovery, you are not entirely stuck - if your ROM is rooted you can drop flashables into /cache and then use a recovery command file /cache/recovery/command.
from recovery.c:
Code:
* The arguments which may be supplied in the recovery.command file:
* --send_intent=anystring - write the text out to recovery.intent
* --update_package=root:path - verify install an OTA package file
* --wipe_data - erase user data (and cache), then reboot
* --wipe_cache - wipe cache (but not user data), then reboot
*
* After completing, we remove /cache/recovery/command and reboot.
Sort of clumsy though - and if you ever end up with a non-rooted ROM and a stock recovery (e.g. the latest OTA) you'll be locked out of root until someone publishes an alternate rooting method.
Also, there are touch versions of the recovery that allow you to do all sorts of creative things - no need for a cable.
OK, last thing: if your mate deals with surface-mount repairs and knows about high-speed (RF design) principles, then he can probably repair your connector no problem. (The issue is that at high data rates, the *geometry* of the connections begins to become important - so clean work with no extra solder or jumper wires are a necessity)
good luck!
I'll answer the question. YES! if it's really not working Dropbox your sdcard and send it back. Do it before the warranty is out and the charge fails.
But make sure you are using the OEM cable as many cables don't data connect.

Definitely RMA. I sent mine in 2 days ago for a row of dead pixels, and it is already being repaired, according to the tracker. Hopefully it will be back in five to 10 days. I feel naked without it. Luckily, I stole my daughters to calm my withdrawals.

My charging port is getting loose to, and I got it in September.
A new one off eBay isn't a lot of money, I'd prefer to do it myself, if the warranty was off. Any chance Google would bump it an 8 to a 16?

From my call to Goo support a few months back, there is no upgrade path from Goo or Asus that the support tech knew about.
As far as the repair goes USB wise, you need to be careful since everything is so miniature and minimalist. Too hot for too long (seconds), can end up lifting traces off the pcb, so be sure your mate knows his business. It would probably be worth the RMA process instead of hosing the job and having to RMA with a void warranty.
Just my 2p.

My Nexus One has developed a stuck pixel. As a launch week buyer, I have 2 more months on my warranty. I also don't own any other phone compatible with my carrier, so I'd prefer a device swap over waiting for a repair - especially since I'm located in Canada.
Any experiences to report involving warranty swaps now that the Nexus One is no longer sold?
Also, I have a little scuff on the corner of my phone, which may or may not count as normal wear and tear. Has anyone here ever been charged for phone damage after a device swap?
I've rooted it but the bootloader is still locked. I was thinking that if I restore to stock via PASSIMG, Google shouldn't know the difference. Perhaps I'll even be able to restore the nandroid backup of one phone to the other.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Feh. The device swap is no longer an option unless I use a US address. I'm not incredibly excited at the prospect of having to cross the border and pick up my device in a strange place in order to obtain warranty service.
And since I don't currently own any other phone that'll work on WIND Mobile, sending it in for warranty is not an option either.
My choice is, cough up some money for an interim replacement phone, or cross the border for a device swap.
You can have it shipped to my house...
LOL, i just shipped mine out, using a dumb phone is really freakin me out!
Miss my Nexus one already.

Heh thanks, but Baltimore is pretty far from Vancouver.
I'll mull over my options. Warranty ends early in January, but I have a 1-year extension due to my credit card's extended warranty program. I could go with a receiving service in Blaine or Point Roberts but it's just a pain. Or alternately I could get myself a secondary phone to tide me over... which costs money.
Off topic, But did you have to call google to setup the exchange? My power button is beginning to not want to work all the time so i'm thinking about warranty exchanging it. However, my phone is rooted with s=off think that will be a problem?

Remember that HTC uses SLCD on their Nexus One phones. I called Warranty Repair to setup a swap and she said that all phone are exchanged with the new SLCD screens.
So if you have an AMOLED and you don't want an SLCD just think of your options. Either deal with the pixel and keep Amoled or swap to a new SLCD. Some people say that they've swapped and they've gotten AMOLED in return, so I think its a 50/50 chance.
I've seen the SLCD Desire models. I think I actually like them better because the jagged edges of the Pentile matrix give me a headache after a while. So that wouldn't bother me too much. However it would make ROM Manager useless until Clockwork Recovery is updated to support SLCD. So I'd need to flash Amon recovery manually via flash_image.

I apologize in advance if this issue has been addressed in another thread. Searching for such a thread has been a pain in the butt though for the following reasons.
A couple months ago I dropped my phone in water with the micro usb port open. The port can still be used to charge the phone but when I try to plug it into a computer, it shows up as a malfunctioning usb device. Also, the screen is constantly a shade of green and has lines going across it.
This by itself isn't so much a problem because none of the water indicators turned red, thank God. BUT, my phone is rooted. This means no warranty replacement for me unless I can return it to stock. I have an 8 GB external SD card and was wondering if I can return my phone to stock without using a computer? I would appreciate any help with this.
Edit: I meant WITHOUT using a computer..since the usb port is fried :/

Use the "One Click Root" to unroot the phone, and return it to stock. To my knowledge, it's not like HTC where it modifies a bootloader or anything, just Custom ROM.
so the phone actually boots and you just want to get rid of root?
download the one-click application on rooting, take the "unroot.zip" and rename it to "update.zip" and either dropbox it over or put it on your external sd card through your computer directly. now use an application (like my files) and remove the old update.zip (if there is one) and add the unroot zip so it's /sdcard/update.zip
reboot into recovery, reinstall packages, tada you are unrooted.

i hate to burst your bubble, but the water indicators are merely there for quick reference for on-the-phone techs. normally when you send the phone in, they actually check it, and will probably see what resembles water damage inside.
now, talked to guys at many carriers. some check more than the indicators, some don't. its really luck of the draw. be careful. thats why i have insurance. $50 and i get a new one

I thought I got lucky and got a N7 without any problems but it looks like my micro USB port is defective! The plug only works if I lightly push it down, the contacts inside aren't connecting properly. I've attached a picture showing how I had to rig it to get it to charge.
Interesting. Mine has been on charge for 5 hours and it still won't switch on or give any charging notifications. I've already requested a refund from google, but if this works I'll at least be able to spend the £15 play credit on books!
when come out of the package, there is a clear tape/wrap around the plug, did you remove that? I didn't bother to remove mine and I find the usb plug to be pretty tight.. tighter than all other devices I've owned..
Odd, if anything my USB port/cable are tighter than any other device I own.

You're keeping it, in this state? RMA is your friend
This sucks! I need to be able to use this device daily for work. It's replaced an older one I've gotten rid of. Will Google send a new one first?
try replace a cable first?? Use one from your phone and see how's the fitment first. Could be just the cable.
I have noticed that the one that shipped works fine, but I have another one with a longer cord (so it can sit on my desk and charge it's a long way to the floor) and that one slips out unless it's sitting on the desk I can't use it or the plug will fall out.
Mine seems to be the tightest fit of any device yet but I have left the plastic on the tip.
If you have to rig it like that it more then likely has a bad solder joint meaning it the charging port needs to be re-soldered back down to the phone, or the port may need to be replaced because one or more of the legs has broken off of the back of the port, or one or more of the pins inside the front of the port is bent out of place.

Ive got this problem now too. GOing to return it tonight and hopefully get a new one.

I had to return my micro USB plug also ,,, but Nexus sent another

I understand completely, I wish someone would tell me a simpler method than resoldering the port. I'm nowhere inclined to do this myself being as I have no clue how to even begin how to solder anything. I have to use 2 rubber bands, an 8 inch strip of clear duct tape, a bottle of hair gel to add weight, and my microwave to hold it all in place.. =| HELP??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi
I bought my first ever tablet on 24/11/2012. I was aware that the 4.2 updates was causing problems for many including myself. I updated device as soon as I started up device, as I did not know what the tablet was like before hand when running I could not be sure for definite if it was update that caused it or the tablet was just like that before update. My tablet was not great after the update. I woke up and restarted my tablet to find it would not boot back up and wold not turn on, could not enter boot recovery either. tablet was fully charged and I was using it for 30 minutes beforehand, whilst using it, it kept saying force closure on chrome clock, that's when I decided to restart the device as it kept popping up force closure every 20 seconds roughly, the device seemed bricked even thou I have never rooted it or anything. I got the device replaced immediately today and am not bothering with the 4.2 update until Goole releases a stable update. Because I have not updated the new tablet works like a charm thank god.
Tip: if this happens to your device within 28 days of purchase take it back to store for a refund not replacement. You are entitled to a refund under sales of goods act. Then once you got a refund buy the device again if you want another. reason I say to get refund first is if you just get a replacement your 28 days start from when you bought the first tablet, and won't start from the date you got tablet replaced. Buy getting a refund first then re buy it this way your 28 days start from the date you rebought it from. That way if tablet buggers up again you got 28 days all over again to get a replacement or refund. I did this today so now instead of just 25 days remaining to get refund if I just got a replacement and got a refund then rebought it and now have 28 days to get a refund or replacement. That way of mine does happen again even thou I'm not installing update it still gives me a new 28 day period.

I concede with approximately three million people updated by now, you could have been the one to find the error in the update.
Mine is on 4.2 and I haven't had any problem you described. It could have been just that one tablet.

Bluetooth, ruined, no stereo anymore. Battery life/charging time, ruined. Lag, lag, lag...
Stupid one sided "fat clock" December missing in contacts event option. some strange keyboard swipe came & went away!
Complete rubbish in this update...
your issue could have been fixed by you, easily. besides that, you didnt have a brick. a brick is when your device either wont power on or wont pass the google screen(and wont do anything else), and cant be fixed. you could have cleared the data for the chrome clock in manage apps(probably would have fixed your issue), you also could have factory reset and manually reupdated the official 4.2 release(without needing root).

The guy you were replying to was talking about the OP's issue which was supposedly a bricked Nexus as a result of upgrading to 4.2. It has nothing to do with the items you mentioned, so I would suggest that he is not the one who needs to "get a clue".

THANK YOU. The term brick started with the Linksys routers and a brick was just that, a brick, a paperweight, doorstop, and was a very real possibility (though rare).
Before that PCs would be called anchors or door-stops but those terms were also used for PCs that were beyond any possible usefulness rather than just being beyond repair.
At least say soft-brick.

If you can pull or remove the battery you can leave the battery out for 15 minutes. That can revive a device that has become non responsive.
I dunno is the battery on the N7 soldered in or use a ribbon connector?

OP, your device probably wasn't bricked, you need to press the power button for 5>7 seconds and it would of powered on, if for you get the count wrong the Nexus 7 wouldn't power up, this is why you thought it was bricked, in any case, all you needed to do is press and hold the power button for 20>30 seconds and i would of powered on.

Just what this forum needed, more *****ing.
May be a defect device most likely due to hardware. Other than the some performance issues and some minor ones here and there, I don't think anyone got their device bricked. I hope the new one will be a better experience. Also it'll be informative if you could have mentioned the first four alpha numeric serial number.

Just thought i would post my experience with Motorola customer service. 6 months ago i did an "advanced exchange" with them and received a new device as the first one burned up the WiFi chip. No real issues there. Fast forward to a few weeks ago and my volume down button just stops working. Call in and get so much run around it was crazy. It all stemmed from they said that my IMEI number was not in their system. Well i got news for them, they sent me the darn device with that IMEI. I spent probably a total of 4 hours on the phone and two different times they said it would take a few days to add. Only the second time did it actually happen. So yesterday i received second exchange device and the first thing out of the box the wireless charger doesn't work. Call back today and they say i have to pay for another "advanced exchange".
Made me mad enough i just went and bought a N6P and am saying so long to Motorola.

When the device is under warranty, you do not have to accept. Maybe the costs of transportation could be yours (warranty conditions). I think you should try again. We all pay for warranty, so don't give up.
I'm not exactly following you. They sent me another device that was broken when I took it out of the box. Now they want 25 more dollars to exchange that one.

I don't know about the specific warranty conditions. But it seems reasonable to me that Motorola must deliver you a 100% working device.
The costs of transportation to send the device back to M. is a different point. When the warrenty conditions does not mention who is responsiblefor the transportation costs, than IMO you have to pay.
Excellent choice mate. Hope Huawei doesn't turn you off as well. Although if I was in your shoes I wouldn't let them off that easily.

I'm seeing poor support from them as well. I tried calling in to get my broken screen fixed and couldn't understand a thing the lady was saying to me and she couldn't understand me either. I ended up doing the online repair request, said it was a free repair with a 4 day turn around. A week and half later they email me that it's going to cost $175. Still waiting for my phone to be returned to me.
Co worker waited over a month and a half to have his moto x pure replaced under warranty and he did the advanced exchange and they wouldn't release the hold off his card.
Seems like lennovo had ran Motorola into ground, or is at least in the process of it.
So my co-worker decided to fix my phone, and what he found makes me embarrassed for Motorola.
Wouldn't charge via wired or wireless. Keep in mind this was supposed to be a perfectly working model sent back from Motorola.
First the reason why it wouldn't charge via the wire. Part of the plastic was under the contacts had snapped off. So the pin was hanging lose. He was able to fix it enough to charge by putting glue in there and getting the pin in a location it made contact.
Second the wireless charging issue. He opened the phone and found that they had ripped the "ribbon" with a screw that went to the wireless charging coil or whatever. He was able to fix that just by patching the ribbon. with some electrical tape or something.
Either way Motorola you get an F for customer experience.
I will never buy another one of your phones after dealing with you guys.
Bought a 6P almost a year ago and its the best phone i have ever owned. I decided to do some follow up posts when i was looking through my history.
You have to remember that Motorola no longer exists. The brand logo has been slapped on a few phones, but what you're seeing now is typical Lenovo. When Motorola was owned by Google, things were very different, and the Nexus 6 is proof of that as it is the only device where both the hardware and software were made by Google-owned entities.
Well, I beg to differ. My experience with their support was good.
I bought a N6 from swappa, a vertical half of the screen would randomly freeze, while the other half would still work; search revealed this to be a hardware issue.
The seller denied the phone had a problem and said I 'must have done something to it'...
Anyway, there were 3 days left of warranty for the phone (July 2016).
I opened a case, got a shipping label, and I received a replacement, however, the replacement was a 32GB version vs the 64GB I sent, so I called support and they immediately contacted their manager, who in turn contacted the logistics group; they emailed a return label, and as soon as the wrong phone arrived in their facilities, they shipped the correct one.
All this took about a 5 or 6 business days.
I could ***** around about the mis-shipment, but as far as support goes, they're way batter than 90% of other companies out there...
