I just realized something today, my daughter is going to be an android user for life. We were in the room together and she was on her nabi2 multitasking like a pro. Is it wrong that my 6 year old can work technology better than my wife, who is only 30 and grew up with all types of computers.
Well anyways, to my point, my daughter asked me to teach her how to make an android app. I am more of a hardware guy / tech support, does anyone have any ideas on how I can get her into development when I really haven't a clue? I have no problem reading stuff, but want to get her started quickly. Also my computer, the only fast one in the house, has to run windows for my corporate environment and the ssd is too small for a dual boot as its only 120 gigs.
What are your ideas? It would be nice to start her young, but her laptop is ancient and I can't afford a new one right now. Can I get her building in windows? What should I start reading with her? Any ideas will be appreciated.

So have I, my commodore sx64 was great. I miss the good old days. I gave my daughter her first android phone when she was 2, it as a Motorola back flip. Now she has the old captivate, a nabi2, an old Sony k23 laptop, and a roku box for the TV. My house is drowned in technology and I'm just hoping to further her interest.

I guess he want to get her interested in tech/computers early, so she might choose to learn to develop a little later in life. Much like parents who buys musical instruments and stuff like that for their kids when they're young. It's easier to teach them some stuff now than later.

You could make her watch videos from thenewboston. He has videos on programming in every possible language in the world. You could start with C++ or QBASIC.
P.S. He also has a tutorial series on how to make beer. Giving you a headsup

I don't think a 6 year old could comprehend C++ or Java. It requires... how to put this... I guess common sense. You need to make sense of what the code is going to be doing. Like if you add a button in android, you'll first need to name it and define it's id. Then you'll need to set it's OnClickListener. Then you'll need to reference that button and give it a command, and yadayadayada. It requires a sense of reason. When kids are only 6 they haven't fully developed this sense of reason yet...

I know C++ is a bit too early, but QBASIC is perfect. If not, Scratch would be the answer. It's a programming environment with a GUI. Created by MIT for students learning CS50 (a course they have). I can say that would be the best, cause my mom introduced me to that when I was 7.
Thank you both for the starting points. I am not looking to have her make an app tomorrow, just start learning the basics of programming since she has the interest. I will give both options a try and see what is easier for her.

Wait, so are we breeding intelligent people(meaning android users) to have babies who should be able to program right out of the womb? I'm all for it.
EDIT: OOOOOOH, nevermind.
I would say that once you learn android development(mainly java), creating a simple app is really easy.
My daughter is 12 she has a cheap cell phone now but for her 13 b-day im getting her the Evo 3d cause she has virgin mobile.. I had that phone and liked it.. so im gonna root it for her and see if she likes it.. She knos all about it now from me always talking about it.. That would be cool if she gets into it
My son can use android already and he is 4. He has a Galaxy vibrant he uses to play apps on and a tablet. But the tablet is vtech so its not android.

if you want your child to learn development languages,
start off with the ol' basic VB6
let her make a popup screen which never closes
Code:
do
msgbox "test"
loop
then save as .vbs and run ,
My 4 month old daughter can already swipe away an image she doesn't like on my nexus 7 gallery and will quite happily turn spongebob up to max volume or pause it when she is bored

Hi all,
i have been using this forum for some months after I got my amazing android phone. I am happy there is finally competition for good phones that are not iphones. I do not like apple's way of doing business and definitely the smugness of most people who get an iphone and think their coolness has gone off charts.
You know what I mean? People who have a need to show off their iproducts in public? I am so happy i have an android. Android people are so much fun to talk to and cool to discuss wasy to improve their phone.
Apple's best product has been the ismug What do you think? do you know what i am talking about?
Message to the moderator: i hope this is the right forum(if not please move it)
that is so true! i personally appreciate the quality of apple products, however i believe that apple products are incredibly overpriced, and their biggest advantage is their biggest downfall: Apples iron grip on their software
Lemme tell you a short story.
I am on a trip to Athens the other day and,as everyone in a large city,I used the subway to go to my destination.Entering the train,I found a seat next to a guy who looked like being 20-25 years old.He didn't seem geeky at all in fact.I sat next to him,but then he did something he shouldn't have.He pulled an iPhone 4 out of his pocket!Oh sh!t.There was also a girl sitting right in front of us,in a seat looking towards us.She told him "Nice phone you have there"(She had an old Sony Ericsson btw).He found a chance to show off then. And then, after I had lost my temper,I pulled my Galaxy S 2 out of my pocket and started playing with it.He looks at it,his eyes go wider than usual and awe was obvious in his expression. The girl(a beauty in fact) turns to my side and says "Your phone is nicer than the iPhone".Then I started to show off.The games, the screen, the effects, everything was better. That iSmug next to me turned white and got off at the next stop. The girl and I had a...nice time after that btw.
And what's the moral of the story?Android ftw!
Tolis that is an amazing story.
i think the only way to strike back at the apple cult is to make fun of their smugness
ps hi from thessaloniki
ps 2 Galaxy S ii is great
Most of the people think iProducts are COOL. It has now become a factor of an individual's "coolness".
Then someone pulls out their android phone and they're like, "Is that samsung?", "Bleh".

Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
that is pathetic -.-
Its just simple business, destroy the competition before they grow even stronger. This extends itself beyond phones to ipads, tablets and anything that competes with Apple.
After all Google acquired the developer of Android in 2005 and it was listed as distributed in 2007. Only until recently have Apple became very agressive in terms of suing and other lawsuits etc. Why? Because he realised just how much of a threat Android has become.
Windows could copy him, he woudnt have cared less but after all, last quarter of 2010 Android was listed as the best selling platform with over 190million Android devices to date.
Only makes sense for Apple to want to curb this growth although the reality is those who loves Apple products will never learn. They could release an iphone 5 with next to no new features and people will still go crazy and line up for days to buy it. They cant do any wrong but those Apple fans should be thanking the healthy competition Android provides because its due this competition that both platforms have lifted their game to out do eachother. SG2 is only as good as it is so it can sell agressively, its the only way potential Iphone owners will consider swapping and due to Android phones like this, Iphone have to provide more features to continue growing instead of crap like Iphone 4s which really is a pathetic upgrade (well not for Apple given how limited the Iphone 4 was) but in reality the features it offers is what many Android phones (LG, Motorolla, HTC, Samsung) have offered for a while.
Either way i dont mind Apple being popular, it forces Android phones to be even better so consumers win either way
I love android but He was good man
I think it's actually quite sad and pathetic the obsession he buiilt up about destroying Android, never mind fairytales about stealing it was all in his mind, he thought he was the main man and Apple were THE most advanced when it came to technology but couldn't hack it when Android came in and pulled the carpet from under him and Apple so decided to cry foul and accuse them of all sorts and issue patent after patent, that doesn't sound to me like a "technology genius" rather a bitter man who simply couldn't accept Apple were being brushed aside by Android.
Anyway this is probably for the general forum.
Just my two cents anyway.
I think he won't succeed.
Who cares what Steve MOD EDIT Jobs said, he was just a glorified marketing man. Apple is rotten to its core - a bit like Jobs now.
I think Larry Ellison will destroy Android for him.
I think that, without Steve Jobs, we wouldn't have these fancy android phones. There wouldn't be a dual-core 1.2ghz phone running an extremely customizable O.S without Apple creating the iPhone. But now there is.
Its called innovation. Company 1 makes a product that sells well. Company 2 "copies" them and creates a different and/or better product. Company 1 then releases an upgrade and tries to beat. Company 2's product. Its never ending and allows for products to improve at an extremely fast rate. That is, until company 1 sues everyone who improved upon their product and is now outselling them!

Was surprise in Steve's book about the bit on Gorilla glass. Was invented in the 60s but Corning couldn't find a use for it. The original iphone was suppose to have a plastic screen but Steve wanted it with glass instead. So his friend suggested he talk to Corning about it.
Corning haven't been making this stuff and Apple wanted this stuff in 6 months for the launch. They converted an lcd plant and got their best people to make the glass.
Apple should have taken out an exclusive license on it. Who knows maybe Steve thinks Andriod stole the glass too.
Android Central posted a good article on this subject: http://tinyurl.com/6l5ps8z

My question. In the field of computer programming at this stage is it worth the 2 year investment of time and money to get a degree in computer programming? I'm 28 married with 4 kids. Is it a good possible career choice? I know its mostly dependent on whether you care enough to be good at it. Or is it a field that is flooded with new talent making it not so much worth it unless it been your passion since you were in your teens?

Short answer for a short question. Lol.
But seriously. The job market is saturated with programmers and unless you have some programming experience it will be difficult. Also, if you still want to do it then pick up some text books and read it yourself. I can send you a C++ and a Java book in pdf. The ones I'm using this semester.

If you're only in it for the money you won't go far. If computers/programming is something you're passionate about there's no limit to what you can do. People who love what they do are always successful compared to people only in it for the money because when they love what they do it becomes apparent in their work.
So would it be a bad idea for me to go into computer science when I go to college in 4 years?

Like I said, it depends on why you're doing it. If it's for the money your time might be better spent on a different major, but if you genuinely are doing it out of a love for computers you won't regret it.

I don't know that I can agree with that. While someone who has a true passion for something can be better than someone that doesn't would you really feel comfortable with a complete moron with a passion for cars to do your brakes? Its a simple enough system but should a step be missed the consequences could be deadly. Think about the mechanics from the Jim Carey movie the mask. for anyone to make a career of something over a hobby the major motivator is undoubtedly money. No matter the passion for you'll find very few people who would work on a strangers car for free. Me personally I am very passionate about cars. I enjoy restoring them, modifying them, adding that custom touch to make it stand out. Would i make a career of it? No I found after years in the industry I much prefer it as a hobby. Even though I have made insane money selling cars that I've restored or even my 10 second street legal camaro. I have a closet full of trophies from the 71 super Beatle restoration project I did in high school and spent a year and a half trailering to shows. I've also started at a restaurant as a bus boy and worked to general manager with no passion for the food service industry. Passion does not guarantee success. Unless that passion is placed in making g yourself the best you can possibly be at anything you do.

Hey,
I created this thread because I enjoyed a very similar thread back in the day I owned my Desire S (still visit it quite often, the thread has +1300 replies (!) ). It serves to reduce the ammount of off-topicness between the (development / other) threads, also to have a laugh and ask some questions regarding various subjects. So who else among here haven't had any Apple products in your family. I do.
My Miss has a One x, daughter has Xperia P, and the youngest has Asus TF300 tab. We're an android fan family. No Mac for us as well, 2 desktop Windows PC in the house.
And yes I guess I'm old for xda, I'm already on my thirties and I think some of you here are as young as my kids.

My family are apple and blackberry unfortunately, the only reason my mum has android is I donated her my old zte blade
Only 19 years of age here, I'm probably on the younger side of most people around here
Well I got a Mrs who can't tell me why she wanted a iPhone.
Me - so what features do you want?
Mrs - an iPhone so I can have apps and stuff like that, and a web browser.
Me - ummm what about a decent andriod phone.
Mrs - why do I want a robot I want a phone.
That's what I'm up against.
My sons both have my HTC's that I have owned.

My ex gf wanted an iPhone when I first met her, then she saw that my Xperia X10 (when it was new haha) and realised that iOS sucks worse than 1.6 donut, she then got a Desire HD and was rocking ICS (PA, CM9 etc...) All her typical 'iPhone is the best' friends were amazed of how it looked and all the features, she now has SGSIII. It amazed me of how an OTT price tag gives people the impression that iPhone is by far the best.

My wife wanted an iPhone :banghead: but I persuaded her to get an Android, now my daughter had an Android for her phone, plus two Android tablets, mine and my wife's and two windows laptops. Thank god there's no maggot ridden apples in my house lol

Hey,
I created this thread because I enjoyed a very similar thread back in the day I owned my Desire S (still visit it quite often, the thread has +1300 replies (!) ). It serves to reduce the ammount of off-topicness between the (development / other) threads, also to have a laugh and ask some questions regarding various subjects. Young or old, noob or developer; everyone's welcome.

Good to see you again as well
The one X is also a truely a brilliant device, some of my friends have it and I hear no-one complaining except for having to flash a boot.img every time they flash a rom. I just bought the XT so I'll probably be around here for 1,5 years or more .

Not sure why I said X. I meant HTC One! I had an X, but my son drowned it in my cat's water bowl! I got this Xperia T as a stop-gap. Actually very impressed with it. Had it since January and only bothered rooting it on Monday. Best stock ROM I've encountered.
Highly recommend using the Xperia Launcher mod if you are not already using it.

I killed my poor old One X a while ago and have been looking for something to replace it lately. I have the opportunity to purchase a TL for what I feel is a very fair price but I am a little hesitant. I really really liked my One X and do not want to be disappointed if I purchase the TL and regret it in a week or two.
Would you add $100 out of pocket and pick up another One X or maybe even a Nexus 4 instead of the TL?
Thanks!

So who else among here haven't had any Apple products in your family. I do.
My Miss has a One x, daughter has Xperia P, and the youngest has Asus TF300 tab. We're an android fan family. No Mac for us as well, 2 desktop Windows PC in the house.
And yes I guess I'm old for xda, I'm already on my thirties and I think some of you here are as young as my kids.

arent lool im only 14
Yep there arent few young members. Back when i was developing for xperia 2011 there were like three 14 aged developers. I am 15 , but... still i think there are kids who like wasting time here.
And to start a new thing here, try answering that question: What is your favourite activity. Pass aroud some stories about it. I think its better if we dont discuss tech in off-topic...
So I personally like biking. I bike to school and from it. The past Sunday i was on a championsip (countrycross) and i finished 12th :victory:. And yesterday i flat my back tire in the middle of the road to school and i pushed my bike to school and missed 3 lessons and i think i shall flat more often tires cause ,teachers cant tell me anything, i have the "proof"
I got to be honest now as well, im 16 (in 2 weeks 17) and I generally like snowboarding (we have an indoor hall near), drinking beer with the mates in the pub, and apparently android development. I also like to go for a run once in a while
@MrTapa i usually travel by bus to school (25km) and fell asleep on an early morning. Drove all the way to Middelburg which is 40 kms further than school also missed 3 classes.
Next school year ill go stuying though, and ill have a bachelors pad (correct?) near school. Bicycle hello!

Sony Xperia ZR is rumored to be in the works! Quad core, 4,6' 720p display, water and dust-proofness again!
But... 8GB internal again... if it was 16GB then maybe this phone would be something interesting... but such a small amount of memory would run out in a moment.
Back to the topic - I love karate! I'm a student at Bydgoszcz Kyokushinkai Tezuka Group for about 8 years now and I tell you - if you want to get fit and be prepared for every uncomfortable and dangerous occasion, or just want to try something cool, try martial arts!

Thanks for the advice. Turns out it was only an extra $30 I needed to add for the very good deal I got on a 16G Nexus 4.
