Anyone have any idea about what the consumer cost will be once it is ready to come out to the public? Just wanted to start this discussion so we can speculate, etc. I have heard far under $1500.00 but who really knows right? The fact that it does not have a built in date module should help, but like any technology it won't be cheap. What do you all think?

yeah i doubt that it will be the same price as the prototype they are selling to devs right now. So I'm guessing, it'll be between $500-$700, considering that in the past google likes to have much better prices compared to their competitors. (ex: Nexus 4 vs iPhone5).
I've also heard rumors of apple creating some sort of watch (which i'm predicting will be googles main competing product with the glasses), so the price of google glasses will probably be a bit less than those.

But i don't think they are really in the same competitive field as each other, one is kinda a watch to look at time and maybe some sort of video call on your wrist, whilst the other kinda adds an interface to life. they are too different.
besides knowing apple, and apple will be apple, their watch will be "revolutionary" and will cost like a gazillion dollars.
It's kinda really hard to estimate the price on the glasses,
but i know i can't wait to get a pair!
Will be exciting when we have tons of people walking around the the glasses on. I guess I will have to switch back to contacts as they don't look like they will fit over my current glasses.

When they are eventually available to consumers you'll probably be ready for new glasses anyway.
I can't see it being this $500+ everyone is predicting. It will most likely have only a single core CPU, 256-512mb ram, limited GPU, and lacking the cost of a large glass display. I see it being more around $150-$250

Yeah in guessing in the $150-$300ish range.

I don't know. I think the technology itself will drive it to the $500-$700 range. I will definitely buy it is it's $150-$300. But if it's any higher I'd have to see some user reviews. The videos look great but I want some testimonials.
The irony will not be lost on me that I just had LASIK performed two years ago to escape these things...
Its a new thing. I think it will start at $800. But when the crappy chinese companys start building it, it will go down extremly fast. Thats what also happend with touchscreen smarthpones.

I do not remember where I read it - consumer version will cost about 1000.
Are you kidding me? This is Google we are talking about here, I'd bet it would have at minimum a 1.2 gigahertz dual core and a gig of ram. This still could be really cheap, but they have to decide how expensive they want it to be. I'm buying no matter what the price is.
"1.2 gigahertz dual core and a gig of ram"?
Why to use such processor and RAM, if Glass will be only additional device to a smartphone.
It won't cost no more than a smart phone. Google are known for there cheap prices and quality. They will use cheaper material than the 1500 glasses and cut cost. If it cost a lot the price will drop because they won't sell enough units to make a profit.

I don't think the material will be cheaper. The prototype is expensive, because it is a prototype, which generally tend to be expensive. However, when mass produced, they will really come down. I have a hunch that Google is looking for people who will really put Glass to the test, hence they are asking for what you will do with it. Who knows, there could be reward of some kind for the testers.
Besides, I don't think Google will sell the metal band with all models. They are in process of talking to some sun-glass manufacturers and if all goes well, you will be looking at Ray Ban and such frames, capable of mounting the actual Glass hardware on. In addition, you will also be able to attach any prescription glasses on these.
This will mostly be an add on device to your phone. Like the Sony smartwatch and stuff. It will have some computing happening in it, but the majority will be offloaded to your phone (like the smartwatch). So, like touch-and-pair, then go everywhere. Glass does have WiFi for standalone operations, but no cellular chip, so it has to be tethered to your phone. Hence, calling and stuff will be routed through your phone instead of direct communication. WiFi also means that as long as your phone and Glass share the same WiFi, they can connect to each other, no matter the distance.
Kartik.
There is a device available now that has almost all of the required components, called the Recon Mod Live. It's a snap-in hmd for ski goggles that retails for $399. It has the optics to use the tiny screen, Bluetooth to talk to a phone, onboard gps, and a pretty decent battery. It even has an SDK for writing your own apps. The only thing it's missing is a camera. It's also quite ugly, as it's not intended to be seen on it's own. It hides completely inside the goggles. I think it's a very good product for price comparison. I would not be surprised to see Google glasses come in around $400-500.

It's not about the profit. Google wants Glass to be popular, just like Android.
One way to increase the popularity of a product is to sell it at a low price, just like they did with the Nexus 7 or the Nexus 4.
300 dollars would be a decent price.
True words - unfortunately.

So iPad 2 is out MARCH 11 next week and has the same prices they are also just attacking Android for being copycats too
But there you have it
It also has the two cameras, 33% thinner (like a piece of paper), dual core, mirrored hdmi out, two colors (black and white), and a case that is more of a "cover". It looks like they are trying to copy android tablets...
You need an extra $39 cable to get hdmi out? That is soooo Apple!!

yepp i thought it was funny the app jab with the honeycomb logo compared to a device that has been out for a full year already, and then the jab on prices i thought was legit
whats it matter what its price or power?the cpu and gpu look great, but whats it matter?they will require backwards compatibility with the old ipad, and the ipad lacks a true os that a tablet for a power user needs
Sweet! The iOS looks the same! All those app icons. Intuitive!
Seems to me, aside from the thickness, Apple has copied most of the new Android Tablet features...dual core, hdmi, front facing camera...I'm sorry but copycat much?

But the device starts at $499. The Xoom is $799 as its only price point. I think its a joke too, but its still cheaper by an extreme amount lol.
This is really sad. At first we said that the Motorola Xoom has to be expensive because of the components. This is completely debunked by the fact that the iPad 2 just launched 1 week later with a dual-core processor, the same storage, 2 cameras, and crafted from aluminum, for $499.
Not to mention that there is no software R&D in Motorolas price, they didn't have to buy Honeycomb. Its just sad that motorola can only release for $799, even the announced wifi version is gonna be $599. How can you release with the same specs for $100+ more than the iPad version?
I'm by far NOT an Apple fanboy, but Motorola is gonna have to slash these prices or they're not going to sell 1million Xooms this year. We're gonna have to see the Xoom down to match or be under the iPad 2 prices or its GG Moto imho.

Yep, me too. I'm not going to buy an iPad, but its A LOT harder to buy the Xoom for $799 when I know they're just straight stealing from me for the price of the components. TBH this means that I'm re-thinking waiting on the Xoom literally because I know they must drop the price to get any real sales numbers. I guarantee their numbers were bad before, but they're gonna be even worse now.
Apple sure knows how to put on a show and get people excited, though! Thinner, lighter, same battery life, same price... same accessibility limitations but it is making people drool...

Right. I'm sure if there was a WiFi only, 16GB Xoom, we'd be looking at $499.99 too. The "equivalent" Xoom is 32GB, WiFi for $599.99. The iPad is cheaper because it has options, as far as hardware configuration goes.

Final answer to all the people wondering about profit margins. What I'm wondering is, how would they work this out? Doesnt the cost price for the component depend on the order amount. They would have to know Asus's and Google's production numbers to find a more accurate figure, no?

Google's not making anything, Asus makes whatever profit. Google just put their name in for marketing the best priced tablet.

Dont know you tell me? This is the Nexus 7 general forum, isn't it?
What I want? Your opinion on the matter would be a good start.
ASUS is certainly profiting more off the 16GB model.
8GB Nexus 7 cost: $184.
<s>
16GB Nexus7 cost: $190.
</s>
To be clear, I'm just making a joke... but still, $50 for 8GB of flash?
I can see eventually Google offering % cuts of the advertising/media sales to the device vendors. As that's something Apple/Amazon can do, to NOT o the same will reduce their ability to compete somewhat. It'd be a good carrot to dangle to the vendors too.
Production cost isn't fixed, but pegged to volume (aka economy of scale). Assuming N7 sells well, this will go down. Component costs also drop over time. KF est BOM cost was $200'ish in Nov last year, now it's $150'ish.
http://google.com/search?q=kindle+fire+bom+cost
The thin margin is why the 8GB SKU is only sold through Play. The 16GB SKU's larger margin allows retailers to take their cut.
Some think that lack of SD slot is a cost-saving decision. But the one thing that cheapo China tabs have is plenty of ports, even full-sized USB. Per above, it's obvious to say that lack of SD is to encourage sales of the higher-end SKU, as else folks will just get the base model + 32GB microSD.
Realistically, the majority of sales will be for the $250 16GB SKU, allowing Goog to make a nominal profit (although I doubt HW profit is Goog's main concern). The 8GB's $200 mark is good for advertising, but is more of a lowballed price.
>I can see eventually Google offering % cuts of the advertising/media sales to the device vendors... It'd be a good carrot to dangle to the vendors too.
I was pondering this same possibility. The rising "app store" model really shoves HW vendors into second-class status. They bear the costs of device manufacturing and marketing, and yet only makes pennies while the platform owner and ISVs make all the big bucks. Some thing will need to give.
Pragmatically, I don't see the above notion happening any time soon, mainly because the ecosystem owners don't have to. There will need to be some trend or sign of rebellion from HW vendors. But the flip side to this is that it will only encourage the eco-owners (MS, Google, Amazon) to roll their own devices, which they are already wont to do.
Methinks many strategists in HW-only vendors are scratching their heads right now, trying to plan a workaround for a content-first market.
Sound analysis, emote.
Assuming they're using up-front component costs, I would treat their estimate as an upper bound. They're making at least $15/unit, more if economies of scale kick in. And probably vastly more on the more popular 16gb version.
Assuming the report about Asus keeping all the profits is accurate, I'd say Asus got a good deal here. The Nexus branding means they'll sell like hotcakes, for hardware inferior to their original me3o. Sounds kinda like a certain fruity company we all know of.

This is good news. It means that other companies can also build a similar 7"--hopefully w/ HDMI and SD slot--and sell it for same price ($250 for 16GB) and still make money. Google upped the ante, but didn't kill off the 7" market. Hopefully there'll be more entrants other than the KF2, since most likely it won't have a SD slot either.
Interesting tidbit: N7 800x1280 IPS display cost = $38, Fire 600x1024 IPS display cost = $35. It only costs $3 more for the high-res display. That means we'll probably see many other 7" going hi-res in the near future. Maybe 10" as well?
How can something that's estimated be final?

Maybe someone already posted this.. but oh well
I've had my GSM Galaxy Nexus since Feb.. and not once has anyone even notice it or asked what kind of phone that is..
Along with that half the people you meet always have something negative to about Android.. rather its not being as smooth as Apple products.. or its just too big..
But Google releases a tablet.. with no kind of public press (and by public i meant TV ads etc at least i haven't seen any) or any kind of notice before hand besides on blogs that i figure only people like me care about (Android Central, The verge etc)
and the thing flys off shelves as soon as they are in stock.. as if it was a Apple product .. and Google is so backed up with orders they didn't even expect this..
What makes the Nexus 7 such a high demand.. we had AOSP tablets before like the XOOM, and Samsung makes some pretty good tablets.. But no one is rushing to buy them, At least from what i remember.. i walked into my Best Buy to buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and they had about 30 in stock on launch day. and the Galaxy Tab 2 7" just came out
Is it just the price point? Jelly Bean? (Even tho 9/10 people don't care what OS their on)
It's a few things for me. The price point being the most obvious but the spec at that price is a winner. Backed by the fact that it's a Nexus device so you're gonna get updates also helps.
I think it's the price.

Asus were the only company making the high standard of android tablets, so it made sense for Google to choose them & it looks like they were correct in doing so
I constantly play with my tablet, thinking I would have paid a whole lot more for it.
The only downside for me on this tablet was the 16gb storage, it would have been nice to have 32gb (even if they charged a bit more)
But once you change your habits of not installing everything you own, 16gb is very manageable for me.

Because this is the first OFIICIAL TRUE AOSP based Google tablet. Xoom was more of unofficial but xoom was way overpriced and had alot of thing going against it from the very beginning. I would think these tablets flying off the shelves because its such a great deal and performs great. One of the best tablets out right now, if not the best period. You get all this power for budget price. If I were you, I'd be trying to get one asap
It's definitely the price point. Flagship android device for that price, I'll take it.
Once I find a job that is.
Congrats to Google though, it's about time an Android tablet starts flying off the shelves.
High end feel and performance for a low-end price.
Jellybean IS buttery smooth, and the Nexus7 feels REALLY fast to use, the screen is georgous, the tablet has a great feel. And it's currently got a bargain price.
I say currently, Clearly by Google pricing it at break-even pricing, other Android tablet vendors don't really stand a chance of competing. So I expect that now Google have shown what can be done with Android tablets, they won't be in too much of a rush to replenish stocks and sell them at the same price. They will have pressure from other Android tablet sellers to give them a break.
In short, expect limited supply and/or price rises for future shipments. You can be sure the $25 play credit will evaporate soon too.
Also with the N7 flying off the shelves it also put pressure on Apple to bring a 7" tablet to the market & the likes of Samsung & others to up their game to offers better specs 7" tablets for around the same price £200.
I gotta agree, it's an amazing tablet, but how the hell does Joe Public know about it?! There's not even a real commercial for it, just a bunch of boring programmers talking about what they have done with it. The only places I've seen it advertised are online ads, but I'm guessing I'm only seeing them everywhere because I've been searching for information about the tablet non-stop.
Either way, I'm glad it's had this popularity. I feel other manufacturers haven't got Tablets "right" yet, and I'm a HUGE fan of Samsung, I try and buy their new tech whenever possible (I have a Samsung: washing machine, TV, monitor, galaxy s2 and laptop) but I couldn't bring myself to purchase their tablet, despite me wanting a tablet for quite some while).
Google needs to take a chunk out of Apple. With Google being almost the opposite of Apple (open source, etc) then I'm glad to see this. Now when my douchbag friends whip out their iPad, I whip out something even better.
Don't want to be negative, but has anyone seen actual sales figures?
I know they are selling out, but how many were available?
Speaking to physical retailers here in the UK, it looks like each store only received a handful (my local PC World got 5).
I would love to see massive success for this tablet, but at this point it doesn't seem clear whether this is high sales levels or just stock shortages.

Right - how do we determine high demand if we don't have any idea of how many were available?
Retailers get them in batches, depending on how many they think they can sell so some will have more than others. I seriously doubt a shop like pcworld would only get 5 per store.
The reason they sold so well is because people (not sheep) bought them based on the reputation of the companies selling them and because they were sold at a fair price for what you are getting. The reason some companies spend a fortune on advertising when releasing a facelift of an outdated product, is because they need to convince their sheep that they need to waste another $400.

I could see the Nexus tablet line having the following:
A cheap ($99 seems low, but okay) 7". A higher quality 7" ($200-$250?). High quality 10".
While I have little money for toys, and I like paying low prices as much as anyone, I don't necessarily want a Nexus device that's had every cost corner cut. Especially things like storage and ram, which the current Nexus 7 seems to have slow parts.
Perhaps Google is trying to entice the masses further by lowering the price of a decent device, but I hope they realize that you can't make money off being the cheapest on the market. You might sell more, but your margins are smaller and your support costs are way higher because of cut corners and the sheer amount of people owning one.
I just see a lot of people being disappointed with this new device as you know they will compare it with the first Gen n7. Sometimes cheaper isn't always better.

I can see why they would want to offer a cheaper N7-type device, but my biggest concern is supply chain issues. The current Nexus 7 is the only device that hasn't had any severe supply issues from the play store in the past few months.... but that's probably mostly because it's already been out for 6 months.
I'm happy enough for my current N7
We have more than enough cheap low-end tablets on the market nowadays..

They better not! I just bought this thing!
With cortex a8 and adreno 200...
They probably saved money on production by leaving off the bluetooth hardware, since it doesn't work with their software anyways.

That's one way to gain market share, N7 were practically sold out everywhere in town over the holidays - DH got herself an iPad2 X'mas 2011 and the iOS people are releasing #5 in March or Spring of 2013 ...

One would be paying more for a used/pre-owned N7 in excellent condition than buying the newest model, cheaper & slimmer. Hmmm :highfive: :fingers-crossed:
Maybe I should return mine to Staple as there is NO restocking fee & no questions asked - and wait for the newer one, 4.1.2 is such a mess in stock form anyway, LOL.
This reminds me of Samsung. They just made a half ass 4in budget phone to sell (S3 Mini). Their intent was to provide a phone for individuals who do not need a power house. The problem is the individuals who review phones like power houses. In many reviews Samsung was ridiculed for making the phone (even though it was meeting their intent). Hopefully Google is not treated the same way.
I can see the headline now, "iPad Mini ($349) dominates against new Google Nexus 7 ($99) .... Google stands no chance".

You're so right, I really like these Nexus phones (4 especially) and Galaxy S3, but the screen size puts me off - it's to big. Gimme a nice 4,2 inch with a decent resolution and I'm sold, but yes, such phones get lost in reviews because they don't stand a chance competing with 6" super triple HD 3D Gorilla Retina screen, 16core CPU and more RAM than my PC has.
I already have a decent tablet (N7), all I want is a decent dual, maybe cheap quad core, ~4" Nexus phone (once I got N7 I realized what android is really supposed to look like, because CM is not stable enough for me to run on my Xperia, so I kept it stock).
Of course Nexus line is only top notch, playing in the big league of S4 and iPhone6, so yes if they released a normal 4" nexus phone, headlines would say "where's your god now Android fans, always you have been bashing iPhones 'small' screen, now you're buying one yourself".
Nexus 7 is cheap enough as it is, we don't need another 800*480 7" tablet, that you can get in the Pharmacy (seriously, I saw some cheap tPads in local pharmacy), make a cheap Nexus phone!
Any news about it?
I'm on a low budget (about $150) and was hoping to get that cheap nexus 7 if it's released
It would be certainly better than those nasty china tablets..
99$?!
Cortex a8 + 512ram?
all i got from that site information is...... "made cheaper . thinner"............mmmmm wow
I'm looking for a comparable china phone. I looked on multiple sites but I can't find a note3 clone with 4g. Maybe I am looking wrong. The clones look very nice, especially at the price they are going for. But I want 4g. I'm on straight talk right now, so it has to be at&t compatible. I really don't want to go any smaller than 5.7 screen size either since I have (and love) the note 2 right now.
Does anyone know if there is a nice note3 clone out there with 4g capabilities on the AT&T network?

it's a clone with 8 cores, 3 gig of ram, and 4g capable in the us.
sweet.

Took a longer look at it. Looks like an extreme scam. He wrote in an email to me that he cannot do paypal because they "do not allow clones" and would "freeze his account". He also states that the only way to order from him is to send western union or wire transfer. The wire transfer option states "do not put an order number anywhere on the transfer or it will get denied by his bank. And obviously everyone knows western union should never be used for any transactions because it is so unsafe. Now... Why would a reputable company say all that? Paypal in fact does not care what you sell since they just handle money. Wire transfers with no order number on them simply makes it easier for them to say you sent it of your own free will and they don't owe you anything. Seems scammish to me.
The other thing is that the new MTK6592 (octacore) with 4g LTE capability just came out this month. According to every other site that I have searched, no 4g LTE version of MTK6592 will be available in a phone until, at the earliest, after the chinese new year (starts jan 31). So again... scammish. I have read reviews about people who got phones from them, but they didnt get what they were told, and that they were scammed out of money. I don't have 350 to risk on a possible scam. I will likely not be waiting for the 4g china phones to come out. The goophone v92 pro is one, the THL monkey king 2 is another. There are likely going to be a lot more soon, but those are two that are being presold now. There are a ton of other phones out there though that get H+ in the us and look great. Elephone p8 being one that is comparable size to the note 3 (5.8 inches and 27k on antutu). There is also a really nice 6.5 inch one called inew i6000+ which I like. Both are at or under 300$ which is a far cry less than the 500 for a note 3. As long as you don't mind the wait, china products are awesome. I've bought and will buy them again. Just get a site that accepts paypal so there is protection on your end. www.pandawill.com is always good, thought they take 2-10 business days to ship usually and then however long it takes to get over seas. There are a ton of china sites that actually work though if you search. PAYPAL ONLY THOUGH!
for $400 US might as well get a legit real one.
I picked up my note 3 brand new in the box with a reciept and a bill of sale from cratgilist for $420. Do you really want to go through all of that and use a fake version of the phone with no warranty to save $70?

Well the idea is actually to get a better phone than the note 3. The note 3 is only quad core. The ones I'm looking at are octa core. Front camera is also 5 mp vs 2 mp of note 3. Then you have screen size. I'm looking at the 6.5. Either way its choice. I may end up just going with the legit note 3 but likely I will just get the new 4g LTE octa core from China because I want 8 cores. Performance wise I know the note 3 scores better antutu but its not all about graphics. I want a phone that is everything I want not just some.

You don't understand what you're getting yourself into.
The Chinese knock offs don't have gorilla glass and will scratch easily. There is no oleophobic coating on the screen and it will be covered in fingerprints immediately and be hard to wipe off without alcohol. The materials on the entire body of the phone are cheap plastic rather than polycarbonate. It will crack much easier and the paint will chip off.
The ram and all of the components are going to be the cheapest possible components on the market so memory failures are very likely. And with no warranty you'll be out of luck. There's no waccom digitizer so 90% of the s pen features will not even work. The speaker phone probably sounds horrible. And you can expect many aspects of touchwiz to not work at all such as smart stay and probably the gyroscope.
Good luck.
**Also you say the note 3 is ONLY quad core lol Are you aware that Samsung makes an octa core version as well? Are you aware that the quad core version scores higher on Antutu X AND is immensely more battery efficient?**

As i mentioned before i kow it scored a better antutu score than the ones im looking at. 35k vs 27k and im sure it is battery efficient. But when i research i find the octa core note 3 is not even activated to be octa core because of a heat package issue. So note 3 will never truly be octa core.
I do know that they make the phones cheaper. But when i buy a phone the first thing i do is case it and put a screen protector on it. So those issues are minor to me. When it comes down to it america charges for names. We all know this and we keep spending the money. There are times where i would only want the american version of things, but i have had china tablets and i am pretty happy with them. I dont mind lower quality materials sometimes because they are worth it. You can not get some of the phones you can get in china models, and the phones tend to have more power than their american counterparts.
performance boost on poor quality materials negates it. i suggest you stick with the legit one.

There is no legit phone of the model that I am looking at. I have not been looking at the note 3 clone at all. I was momentarily looking at it because I thought it was the same thing. Now I am looking at other chinese phones that are not made in America. The phones are reputable manufacturers that have millions of buyers. I am not looking at clones because I don't think it makes sense to get a clone. I suggest you take a look at the chinese brands out there, they have a huge following. ZOPO t1000 looks really nice but it's not out yet. Just because something isn't made for america doesnt make it bad. In fact, a lot of the phones made outside of the US are amazing. Either way, I ended up finding a really cheap note 3 and scooped it so all this is moot. But I will definitely be looking a lot harder at the chinese brand phones now that they are going to be offering 4g on them. I do suggest you take a harder look though, you are very biased against them, and they really aren't as bad as you make them out to be. In most cases people would be very happy with a cheaper foreign make phone instead of the overpriced overbloated crap that american consumers are used to. For the same technology they charge less. China is all open source, they really are ahead of the curve on phones if you really look at it. You can actually get the "foreign" make phones that are the same brands we get in the US, but they are VASTLY different. The dual sim note 2 is just one example. Take a look at them, you likely will be happy with at least one of em if you let yourself be.

I guess I'll agree to disagree. You seem set against foreign phones for some reason. Personally I think american products are overpriced and have inferior components to what they COULD put in there. It's all a game in america. Money over everything else. This is why we see all the locked devices and locked firmware, and everything else they do to keep their products theirs alone. All these things are unheard of other places. We are the capitol of control. I am not saying that every foreign phone is a winner, but there are many amazing devices. Most american devices are crap, that's fact, so it's really not much different. And with all the advances they have because it's open source, I think they will eventually surpass america in all areas. Till then, I guess everyone will just hate foreign stuff!

Capitol of control? And China isnt? LMAO You keep referring to AMERICAN phones. You realize Samsung is a Korean manufacturer right? Lol The locked bootloaders come from the wireless carriers in the US, NOT the phone manufacturers. And Chinese stuff sucks plane and simple. They clone everything and sell bogus products. Are you telling me you would buy a car from china? It would be made out of cardboard LOL
And when you buy an imported phone you will have zero warranty. I can't believe you would even be okay with that part alone. Show me one CHINESE MADE, not a Chinese variant of a Korean phone such as a note 2 that is sold in china, a Chinese phone like ZTE or oppo, that has a better spec sheet and build quality than one of the major brands sold in america.

Again, I am not saying they are all better. American phones, and I mean american CARRIED phones, are in general garbage. The new Zoppo t1000 has great specs if you look at them. The only phones that really are better in america are the flagship devices. I would never buy an american phone that was not a flagship. I would however buy a lot of the various chinese phones. As far as the warranty... I don't really care about warranty guarantees. I've never even used one, and I get all my phones second hand anyways. No warranty there. Either way, it's preference, you just don't like non american phones. I don't really care where they come from.
