Triple (Hitter) Question: See inside for Questions - Motorola Droid Bionic

First Question:
Is it safe to delete all contents of /mnt/sdcard ?
Second Question:
Is there a way to install to unsafe?
Third Question:
Liquid Smooth has parted ways. The two best ROMs that have been recommended to me were LS and Eclipse. I found Eclipse to be sluggish compared to Liquid Smooth. What is a good primary ROM with these two requirements: Stupid Fast and Everything Working?

1) I would say no. Safestrap and some others are located there as far as I know. I mean you could probably do that and then install fastboot or something and update that way but i'm not 100% sure. Also what is the purpose? As far as I know with SS there is no need to do this.
2) IDK about that.
3) I found Blurry Maxx Rom to be a very snappy and responsive ICS based rom so everything works. It is not blur based so you won't have the quick contacts but I just put 8 "people" card widgets up and it looks the same as a pulled down contacts widget. So far everything except smart actions seems to work flawlessly. I did find v 3.8 to be more stable and faster than 4.2 (not to be confused with android version 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 this is an ICS rom not JB).
Hope this helps.

1) Internal SD is starting to get crapped up and Android isn't very good at cleaning up after itself.
2) Not a huge deal until I find a new daily.
3) I was not clear and it was 100% my fault. I left out the detail that I am looking for a JB build. I have a near 100% Jelly Build from Liquid but there is an issue that I can't figure out.

Sorry I can't be of more help. The JB builds are really hit or miss and seems individual phone dependent. I had CM 10.1 and app drawer stops working after 10 minutes, just FC. I'm hoping Liquid will be better as I've heard. Also it is known you can't do pattern unlock on JB builds as of now and you will need 3rd party camera app like camera fx. Good luck.

My only issue is the whole mounting to /storage instead of /mnt everything else I can live with. I am thinking it is a JB thing. Other JB Roms are doing the same thing.
New question, to get as close to a stock phone as possible, is this the procedure?
1) Boot into Safestrap, remove safe-side ROM.
2) Boot into stock ROM, remove safestrap boot files followed by SafeStrap apk.
3) Do a factory reset.
Would this be the safe way about it?

If you really want stock then I would delete all partitions and then remove bootstrap then RSDLite the phone to completely stock.

Fresh in terms of stock leak, so that I can keep unsafe completely app free, only have contacts and use it in case of emergency for calls.
I will want to reinstall root, safestrap, and custom roms again but just want to decrapify the unsafe side.

Can you use RSDLite with the stock leak? I'm not 100% sure about that one but I don't see why not. If you are using a ROM anyway what's the point of using leaked SW for the stock? Seems like extra work to me.

I figured out the formatting but what do you mean with extra work?

my thought is if you can't just use RSDLite to install the "leak" SW than it may mean doing more work figuring it out.

[mod] D3 and Stock GB Camera CWM installers

Attached are working CWM installers for the D3 and stock GB camera apk's.
These install correctly on picrust/cherrypi 0.6 and ninja 4.5 sf, but they should work on any 4.5.91 OTA or newer gingerbread based rom outside of cm7 right now.
Step 1)
boot into cwm (romracer's is prefered)
Step 2)
advanced > wipe dalvik cache, go back > wipe cache
Step 3)
install zip from sdcard > flash respective zip
Step 4)
reboot
It does take some time on initial load of either camera after the flash.
D3 - If you switch to 5mp you get stuck on 5mp. This is not rom specific. If I manage to find a better version I will update the cwm.
**disclaimer**
If you break your phone, I am not responsible. As pointed out later in the thread, yes all this does is push the corresponding apk file, this just makes it a flashable cwm and speeds up the process.
Nice, should this work on stock 4.5.91 ?
it should, I havent tested it directly but the stock gb camera is from that.

Romracer´s CWM
I just did a fresh install of ken's gingerbread beta and both install correctly following the instruction in the op.
I am on romracers atrix 2 cwm, but I dont think that should make a difference in this particular case.
do either of them work for you?
only d3 camera didn´t work
its possible the file got damaged in the download, or didnt flash right. give it another shot and see if it still does it.
i flashed three times with no luck and also tried changing app permissions with root explorer.
fixed permissions with CWM... no luck.
i don´t know what else can do
did you redownload the file though?

yes, of course
I have no idea why it won't flash for you then, I will look into it further when I wake up.
This will not work unless the rom is made from the 2.3.4 91 OTA/retail SBF . So Alien/Cherrypie/R-9 etc
Most of the new roms have it or have the option on the respective thread.
this is actually in response to people having problems with the ones linked in their respective threads, the update script was changed in the zip files.
Worked fine for me running Alien v3... put on the stock GB camera... tho it took quite a while to bootup so beware... I was thinking I fried the thing...
Tho I have a question... why do pics look so bad and pixelated on this...?? Also the size of the pictures is less than 1mb usually ... isn't it generally the bigger the size the better the quality...??
What, settings should one keep for the best possible picture quality...?? Is widescreen better or 5mp...??
Sent from my Motorola Atrix
Im not sure why they would be pixelated, unless the gallery you are using is the cause. Pictures being less than 1mb would mean they are being taken at one of the lower settings.

I'm completely sure they are set to 5mp or widescreen yet when checking the picture info they are usually like 800kb around... and by pixelated I don't mean like that terrible but not as crisp as what you would expect or what IV seen on my other phones like the SGS...

I'd like to root but.. I need advice on whether or not I should

As the title says, I'd like to root, but with somewhat limited knowledge on the phone and it's processes, and no knowledge of scripting/coding, I want to avoid taking too much risk.
I've been stock with the D3 since I got the phone in 2011, found out we aren't getting ICS, and we aren't getting unlocked by Moto. (pissed off!) >.<
The way I see it I have 2 options, 1) stay stock until my contract is up in march and get a new phone, or 2) Give root a go, and Have ICS ported to me via a Custom Rom, and do more research as I go. (I like being hands-on when it comes to learning).
As to my phone, I am running 906 OTA Stock as it gets .. -_-' I'd like to root using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686911 <-- ovelayer's method in this thread. (thank you Ovelayer, I can't seem to find that button so I'm just acknowledging you here since I'm new to this kind-of thing).
I just need some clarification
in his thread it says to dl the 1-click .exe, then the Motofail root tool? or is that also a way to root? I got confused with that.
Afterwards, I dl safestrap once I'm rooted? or should I just dl it and put it onto my phone all at once?
Apologies for the noobness. I'd rather be a noob asking questions than a retard who goes ahead and does things and finds out he screwed up too late.
Rooting is done to get superuser permissions within Android so you can install some advanced apps and modify system files which can all be done from within the stock ROM. Rooting then flashing an unofficial ROM is a little more advanced and something I haven't done yet so I can't help you much there. I'm waiting for something a little more stable since my Droid 3 is my main phone. You can read Hash of Codes site (the developer of ICS/JB for the Droid 3) on how to safestrap:
http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/how-to-safestrap/
To root use Motofail. I know it says its for the Droid 4 but the original Droid 3 root exploit was patched with the latest OTA so we have to use the Droid 4 method called Motofail:

My D3 has Maverick as non-safe for daily driver and the latest Hashcode for fun. I find that to be the best combination. Once Hash finishes the camera and JB is working reasonable well, JB will be my DD.
I also have an SGS3, TF300T, and a Spica, all of them rooted.
once rooted, make sure you use safe strap. It makes roms easy to try out before having to settle

Alright, so it appears I have been rooted, and still looks like I'm in .906 OTA. It was pretty easy using Motofail, actually. So, now I have Superuser and Titanium Backup(free, for now) on my D3.
Now, you guys mentioned Safestrap? Can you guys give me a suggestion on which one to use? There appear to be a few of them. 1 is SAFESTRAP v2.10 Recovery (Kexec) and the other is a Tweaked version of Safestrap v1.08e (Non-Kex) which one is better, or a better question, whats the difference between the 2?

Safestrap 1.08 is the 'normal' ssafestrap
Safestrap 1.08e/f/g is an advanced safestrap with extra features like touch etc but not by hashcode
Safestrap 2.10 is the latest which allows the new kernel with the kexec ICS/JB to be used.
2.10 It appears to also work fine with normal roms so i'd use that

If you were stock 906, there was no reason to run the 1-click.exe - that's only for people who rooted their phones and deleted bloatware to get the phone back to stock, or people whose phones are bricked somehow. Coming from stock, just running Motofail was enough to root.
I will concur with everyone here that running rooting, installing and running Safestrap, and installing a custom ROM - and leaving your rooted stock alone - is the best way to go. It will be a lot easier to unroot later on if you want to sell the phone, etc.
Alright, Safestrap 2.01 is installed. According to Hash's Blog, I should create a backup when in the Recovery Menu since its my first time accessing the Safestrap Menu. Can I get a little more detail as to how I do this? When I select backup, it asks if I want to backup from Internal SD or External? I'm assuming Internal, but I just want to err on the side of caution and ask those who already know.

It's asking where to backup TO, like the post above me, choose wherever has space. Backups are about 1GB. You may wish to move it to your computer after if you don't have much space on your device. You can always stick it back on your external sd via card reader if needed, but it's really hard to brick while using safestrap
Also one of the most common errors for noobs on safestrap is, the first time you engage safe mode, you must flash a rom. Since its using a different partition for system, it's currently empty and if you switch to safe and try to boot you will get a black screen as you are booting an empty partition. All gingerbread roms are stable but there are no ics roms that are fully functional, although one is in the works

I saw that, and before I rooted, I did a Factory Reset on the phone and formatted my SD card. So I have 11+gig free on Internal and 15+gigs on External.
Now, I just need to learn to Flash RoMs (probably more to it than just hitting a button that says flash .zip) and find some info on the "must-have" apps for a rooted phone.
Well guys, I've successfully installed CM9 Kexec ICS Sept 5th update from Hashcode on my Droid 3! Now, another big question, How will I restore stuff like contact and account info? I've read somewhere around here that Restoring Data from my google account is a bad idea?? Are there other ways of doing so without Titanium Backup, or should I just go ahead and buy the Pro Key? (currently limited funding)

If your contacts are on your google account they will show up.
What other account info do you mean?
You should go ahead and restore contacts. just go to Settings>Accounts and Sync>Google, then turn contacts sync on.

I must have made another noob mistake. Everything went well, up until my first startup with the new OS (cyanogenmod9). It has been at the startup screen for over 15minutes right now. I must say, it is one awesome startup screen, with the blue effects and all, but I would love to get to the desktop/homescreen, haha.
If you guys have any advice I would greatly appreciate it. This is a Droid 3, it was rooted a couple hours ago, I did the safestrap as described, created a backup file, etc. My only guess is I jumped the gun by trying this OS on my Droid3 and it may still be under development? FWIW to you, this is the first I've rooted or modded a smartphone in my life, from 0-full speed in a couple hours is what I was shooting for using everyone elses experience.
thanks
Make sure you wiped the data/user settings in Safestrap. You lose your apps & settings but those items from a previous install can cause that type of boot issue.

thanks. since my last post I used a more detailed how-to, and wiped 3 different areas for data. Now, i had only a black screen (with power, barely lit) and it never even got to the cool blue screen.
I'm currently in safestrap after pulling my battery again, just trying to figure out how to revert back to my standard OS (rooted) and try a ROM like MavRom since it's suppoedly fully capable and stable. I'd love ICS, but I just want a working phone right now
---------- Post added at 10:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:14 PM ----------
good news is, I did enough steps correctly, that I was able to startup in my unsafe mode, and my normal rooted system is functioning fine. That makes me very happy.
This duel boot thing is pretty cool, reminds me of having bootable thumb drives on my old linux system with different OS's. I hope i can get a seperate OS working, however, that fits my needs for a day to day functional phone, without all of Verizon's crap on it
Once rooted use titanium backup to back up apps and data.
Only restore with the same ROM though, the following is in increasing order of risk
restore app only to exact same ROM+version
restore app+data to same ROM+ver
restore app only to update of same ROM
restore app+data to updated ROM version
play chicken with a bus on a highway
restore apps to different kernel e.g. CM7 backup => restore to CM9
check to see what a gun firing looks like down the barrel
restore app+data to different kernel
restore app+data to an older ROM or kernel
do anything at all with system apps+data if you don't know what you're doing

[ROM][JB+, 4.2.2]OFFICIAL AOKP for Droid 4 [LATEST BUILD 5-23-13][NIGHTLIES]

****ALL CREDIT FOR THIS GOES TO HASHCODE AND DHACKER****
I saw this rom on hashcode's rom page, but didn't see a thread for it here. So I decided to create one.
Discuss bugs, experiences, questions on this thread I guess.
Installation procedure should be the same as CM10.1:
"Using this ROM requires Safestrap v2.11 OR SAFESTRAP 3.X currently. As things progress we may add support for Bootstrap or others in.
In all cases moving from ICS to JB, I recommend a full wipe and Titanium Backup restore of just apps+data.
If moving from KEXEC STOCK there might be some issues where you will need to wipe and restore. Be aware.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FLASHING:
1. Download the ROM from the above link
2. Grab Jellybean GApps
3. Place both files on your SD card
4. Reboot into Safestrap by pressing [menu] at the splash screen
5. If necessary format /system when swapping from ICS to JB to make sure that GApps and other files are reset correctly
6. Also if necessary do a wipe of data/cache (when moving between ICS and JB)
7. Flash the .zip files as normal
8. Reboot and let the phone sit for about 1 minute while it re-indexes files, etc."

I have been running Stock based AOKP for about a week now and it runs well. The only issue I have with it is no flash for the camera.
I also have been building my own from hashcode and dhacker29 source. I noticed that the stock-aokp build on rombot is a couple of days old. Here is one I did yesterday that is android 4.1.2 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31584441#post31584441

Just to be clear, you are actually bootlooping, not getting any error messages, yes?
Second, try wiping data in stock recovery.
Let us know if that works!

Not sure if I can help, but certainly interested in what happened to cause it. Did you boot back to stock and uninstall the older safestrap first? If you can still get to the recover there must be some way to get it working again.

I ended up doing this right after i made my post and it booted up.
I to boot looped my phone, so i wiped data and factory reset in stock recovery, which once it booted, i disabled super user than re enabled it, which then i was able to update it and get busy box installed than install SS3 and everything is back to normal
Glad to hear it all worked out for you

I have stock camera working on 10-14 build! it has never worked on any previous build, I've done nothing different.
however, there is still no camera flash.
I've seen this problem on other AOKP ROMs... how do I disable the AOKP Statistics notification that keeps popping up? Already ticked and unticked the report checkbox. I just cleared Settings data/cache so maybe that will change it.
Also, how about we "kang" the lockscreen options from CM10. Miss those already.

Yup, last night when I was trying to use the Alarm Clock, and then again today with the Camera. This one has some neat features (Status/Notificaiton Bar customizations are outstanding) however its not quite un-alpha enough to use as a daily driver for myself. I will be keeping an eye on this one though, its looking very promising.

Okay, so I know there are problems like the camera not working on ICS/JB. But I can't really find a comprehensive list of all the problems it has?
Do important things like data work? Bluetooth? Wifi? Etc
Also would ICS be a better thing to install if things like BT/Data work on ICS and not JB yet? Or 4.1 instead of 4.2?

Data and wifi works for me. I don't use bluetooth, so I can't verify that for you. I have a different unlock then everyone else here. So it might not be the same for you. But from what I've been reading it should work.

Where do I check that?
How do i get data on the xt862? I cant get it working.

Well I think you need to enter APN and activate it. Works for me. Unless I do not have signal on my D3.
I just installed CM 10.1 on my mother's Verizon D3, and WiFi/3G seem to work just fine. The performance is much better than stock (where she came from).

As long as I safestrap and install the rom into another slot I can always just boot the stock rom right? Safestrap itself doesn't have any issues does it? Also does rooting with motofail wipe the phone?

Yes, though I believe that I read from Hash's latest announcement that the latest build must go into slot 1. I may have read that wrong...

Occasionally it will not start Safestrap when you press menu on boot when prompted. It seems to only happen to me when I reboot using a reboot command from a menu or app, rather than by shutting down the phone and restarting the "normal" way. There is a fix for this that always works for me: pull the battery. Open the keyboard and hold the "X" key while you power on. This will boot to a menu. Use VolDn to highlight "Start BP Tools" (should be the last option) and press VolUp to choose that. That always starts Safestrap for me.

Awesome, thanks. I'm gonna root the phone, remove bloat, and maybe put a custom launcher and lockscreen on it and hopefully that will make the phone a lot more smooth. I've seen some issues with minimoto so unless that gets fixed I won't be installing that. Well I guess I can put that on the second rom slot, right? Or was that multiple rom slot thing only with Hash's ICS/JB releases?
I just installed CM 10.1
do the cm 10.1 roms have google play store? I just installed the latest release from hash code, but can't seem to find the store. Is there a way to install apps?

most of the current roms can be install with safestrap
steel droid 4.8/5.6, cm9, aokp, XT861 5.8.25 2.3.6, XT862 2.3.6 DST, minimo......
there are four slots + stock
only cm10.1 needs to be on slot 1, if you don't have cm10.1, another rom can be there

So wait, if I put 10.1 in slot 1 is that different still from stock? So I can switch between the two?
Also I need some clarification, is the XT862 what the US Verizon DROID 3 is called?

Yes. There is stock and you can create up to four ROM slots on internal storage (depending on how much storage you have available there and how big you make each data partition.) There is some good info on hashcode's blog: http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/how-to-safestrap/
It's pretty easy and fast to switch between ROM slots and/or back to stock.

[ROM] Blackhole G2 Custom ROM [VZW]

In order to flash this ROM please make sure you have the following:
Nerves of Steel
Root
TWRP 2.6.3.2
A Current Backup
A clear knowledge of how to go back to stock
Disclaimer: Though I have flashed this ROM on my own device with no issues, and it has been beta tested there is no guarantee that yours will behave the same way. It is possible to hard brick your phone while flashing custom ROMs, and I take no responsibility if this happens to you. Please be aware that this is the first public release of this ROM, and has only been tested on a handful of devices. Further, this a ROM made for the Verizon G2 variant, and flashing it on any other version could be disastrous. Proceed at your own risk.
Installation steps:
1. Boot the phone into the TWRP recovery using ADB.
2. Choose "Wipe", then use the slider to start a system restore. This will take 5-10 minutes. (This step should be optional, but I have not tested it without wiping /data, feel free to test, but expect problems and be pleasantly surprised if they don't occur.)
3. Back out to the main menu.
4. Choose "Install"
5. Select "Blackhole_G2_Stock_1.0.zip" from your internal memory.
6. Confirm by using the slider. This will take 5-15 minutes, possibly longer. Do not attempt to reboot your phone or cancel the flash in any way.
7. Choose "Reboot System"
Please E-mail me or post here with any feedback, suggestions, and especially problems you have with the Rom.
Features:
Built on Stock Rooted base by scrosler
Zipaligned
Odexed, since this phone is a pain to deodex and no one has done it yet...
Stripped of almost everything but the bare essentials. As a rule, anything you can get from the play store is gone. Most LG apps are gone. All Verizon apps except mobile hotspot are gone. See screenshot.
Includes the Mobile Hotspot with provisioning removed for free tethering (thanks to WACOMalt for posting)
This ROM is a Clean Rom that is just the first step toward the final goal of an Aroma based installer that will allow you to build your own ROM with whatever features and mods you want. Since no Clean ROM is available yet I thought I'd release just the base for the people who want something lightweight and stable to flash.
KNOW ISSUES:
- If you wipe data when you install (and I suggest you do) you will get an error when you click through the setup wizard, but just continue and you'll be able to complete it.
- In some cases it may ask you to install the Google Play Services, go ahead and do so.
- The Qvoice has been removed, but the shortcut when you drag up and to the left from home is still there for now. It simply does nothing.
- The Help app is included only to disable the annoying popups. All other features of the help app except the icon glossary will cause the app to crash.
Download:
Version 1.0
Missing app installers:
(Coming soon) Copy these to your internal memory and flash via TWRP to restore stock apps that have been removed. Please post if there's something you need back and can't wait for the final version to have it.
Quick Remote
Stock Email
Qvoice
(These will become links as I put the packages together and get them uploaded)
Thanks:
scrosler for the Stock Rooted ROM I used as the base
WACOMalt for posting the modified Mobile Hotspot
Matt (drkow19), heffzilla, triskropf97, and sgtmedeiros for beta testing
Blackhole Universal Installer
I put together a package that will let you easily create your own flashable packages for the Verizon LG G2. All you have to do is grab any apps you are missing and want to add back from the Stock Rooted ROM provided by scrosler. Open the .zip on your computer using 7zip or your archive manager of choice. Place all the .apk and .odex files you want to flash to your phone in the /system/app folder inside the zip file. you can rename this whatever you want. Anyone can feel free to use this to package any mods/apps/themes as well, just create the appropriate folders under the /system folder like /framework or /media.
Reserved for Changelog
AWESOME! Cant wait to try. When you say LG apps are removed, are you removing functionality like knock-on? Or just things like quick remote/Qslide?
Nice job. Good to see this. Will try later. Thanks.

All the LG features, gestures and functionality are left in. Knock-on, Quickwindow, Quickmemo, Qslide, Slide-aside, etc. all work as intended. The LG apps is the stuff like notebook, quick translate, quick remote, email, qvoice etc. Stuff you can get better versions of from the market, or that not everyone uses. In the final rom I'll have them all available to add back, but for now I tried to make it as clean as possible without affecting any of the extra features that LG provides. And if I've removed something that a majority of people want back it can always be added in the next version.
Thanks for this, I remember you from my Fascinate days!
~2.5GB down to 1.04GB....thats a helluva de-bloat!

It needed to be. OG droid ROMs used to be no more than 200MB, now were looking at 10 - 15 times that and it's just crazy. Who wants to download and copy a 2 gig file to their phone? But with Aroma that's what it will end up being. I'd so much rather use Rom Manager like on the fascinate, so you only download what you want, but then you're downloading over a gig straight to the phone. Oh well.

First three I hid myself. Tasks and Weather will be optional in the final build.
Not sure if you want requests or not, but do you plan on adding features like:
- Black/Transparent nav and status bar
- Removal of location icon
- Remove AM/PM - Do you know if this one is possible?
- AOSP status bar icons
I am on the other VZW rooted rom in the same section of XDA this rom is in with TWRP recovery. I am not on the latest TWRP recovery. After I get on the latest recovery, do I wipe factory reset, clear caches and flash like it was with the GNex? I just really do not want to have to worry about bootlooping and such. This looks like the rom I am looking for.....thanks, I appreciate any helpful responses..
That's a good question. It is the stock ROM essentially

yes, those features are intended to be an optional part of the final product. I just wanted to release something people could flash for an easy debloat now. Since this is a stock based rom built off the OTA, any mods that work with the OTA should work with this ROM, I just haven't tested them yet. I am not much of a modder, but I intend to add available mods to the Aroma installer for the final ROM, with permission of the creator of course.

Once you have flashed the latest version of TWRP, I do recommend wiping data and cache. This should notbe necessary, but I haven't done enough testing to say for sure. If you have opened and used apps on stock that have been removed in the ROM, it's difficult to say what dependencies they may have created. If you are concerned about getting a bootloop, then wipe. If you are prepared to restore to stock with the link in the OP, then go ahead and don't wipe and hope for the best. Again, it should work, but I haven't had anyone test it yet.
And ultimately, if you're on the latest version of TWRP, I believe they fixed the issues with booting into recovery with the hardware buttons, so if you do get caught in a bootloop you should be able to enter TWRP and restore a backup. Someone please correct me if I misunderstood this, "2.6.3.2 removes /misc from the recovery.fstab which prevents factory reset when you use the key combo to enter recovery."

Is the LG filesystem any different from the filesystem on the Gnex?
If not, Ive had great success using the Android Revolution SuperWipe script before flashing a ROM. I add it as the first zip in the queue on TWRP and it handles wiping all of the caches/data/system
If I know for sure it will work on the G2 Id be happy to provide a dropbox link.
Works great but it force closed on the initial install when i tried to do the email part and the stock email app is not there otherwise so far so good
Glad to see it posted! Still running great for me, thanks again!
