[Q] Very dark screen after update - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have got a Galaxy Note wich has a very dark screen brightness since a firmeware update.
I don't know, wether the firmware update was interrupted and wether the phone is rooted, so I flashed "CM9_safe_kernel.tar" from the kernel repository, because here it's said, to avoid the superbrick one should use one of the "safe kernels" with .tar archive type and all other kernels seemed to be in .zip archives.
Afterwords I entered CWM-Recovery and noticed, that the screen brightness was still to dark to read anything.
Another thing I noticed was, that the touchscreen seemed not to work in Android, but the s-pen did. I managed to enable USB-debugging and caught some screenshots with QtADB, a gui for the adb program. With thouse screenshots I was able to gether some information about the installed versions. (note that I did this before flashing the new kernel, because with the CM9-kernel it won't boot)
By the way I checked that the brightness was allready set to 100% and auto-brightness was turned off.
Now I plan to install ParanoidAndroid from here but I'm not completly sure, wether I've done it right to avoid a superbrick - may I now just wipe the data- and cache-partitions or have i missed something ?
Furthermore I can't read the options of CM9, because the screen is to dark to do so - could somebody list me the displayed options ?
I'm pretty sure that this is a software issue because when the Note is turned off (I removed the battery) and I connect the cable and hit the power-button, a loading sign and shortly after the battery-level are both displayed at readable brightness for a short time - then the brightness fades down.
I appreciate any help,
afxi

boot into download mode and see how the screen brightness is..

I've allready tried that - it's the same as in Android and in the recovery mode.
It looks quite similar to this, but mine looks like new - not like after a drop which could have damaged something.
Does anybody know, wich part of the system displays the battery-level when switched off ? Is it the kernel, the Android-system or something else ? Maybe that one is corrupted.

have you tried to flash a completely stock rom using odin? may be start with a GB rom

I'm downloading N7000XXLC1---------2.3.6-------2012 March----------N7000OXALC1----------Open Germany from here.
While looking for an Odin download I've found Odin v. 3.07, but most people seem to be using something like v. 1.87. This newer Version has much more options, so could you please tell me, which I should enable and which don't ?
As far as I understood, I should only enable "Auto Reboot", "F. Reset Time" and select the Android-Image in "PDA", right ?
Downloading will take some time, because my internet-connection isn't that fast and the file is about 500MiB in size.

latest odin will also do..
1.85 version can be downloaded from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997

I was able to flash GB 2.3.6, but the problems with the brightness and the touchscreen persist. It shows some welcome-screen and it looks like I'm unable to go to the settings to enable USB-debugging, which would enable me to navigate with screenshots made via QtADB.
Do you have any other ideas ?

go into recovery and check if you can do a factory reset. cant you go through the settings? even using the spen now?

The problem in getting to the settings menu is, that I can't properly see, wether there is a popup, when pressing the settings button, which aks me, to which settings I want to go. As far as I can see, there is no such popup, the only thing I was able do read, was the question regarding the language setting.
In the stock GB recovery I can't read the text too - could you please tell me, which one in the list is "factory reset" ?

3rd one i think

While wiping data the screen was a little bit brighter, so that I could read the text. It was still not very bright, but readable. After the wipe was finished, it was dark again.
While booting Android, the Samung logo flashed once a little brighter, but that was everything special I noticed.
By the way: The backlight for the resistive buttons seems to be normal (but I don't have another Note to compare).

ok.. still no touch?

The touchscreen is still not working.
While booting Android, the Samung logo flashed once a little brighter

This seems to happen allways, when the lights behinde the resistive buttons switch on for a short time and the phone vibrates ones. In this moment the brightness looks like normal but turns immediately down again.

may be you now need to check it at a service center

I think I've found the issue - it is a water damage :-/
When I'm home I can add a picture which shows the comparision between the water indicators under the battery and in the case - the one under the battery has become a little purple.
I've read that people have succesfully repaired their phones with isopropyl alcohol, so I've got myself some from the next pharmacy.
The only thing I am unsure about is, which things I should put in the alcohol and which don't.
I wouldn't put the microphone, the speaker and the display into it, but I think I should try to clean the connections from the ribbon cables. How about the vibration motor ? The vibration function seemed to work, and I'm unsure whether it could become damaged.
Would you agree that both cameras are safe to put into the alcohol ?
At least the mainboard should be safe.

Captivate brick???? oranje screen???

Well yes, that is .... do not know if either captivate my story (I hope not because that really does a paste) or you can still save, but here I tell them what is happening:
NOTE: I clarify that I had wanted to get into issues FIRMS, roms, etc ... only put apk but that's another story, I was happy with my cell phone as he was, even so lag and everything was a machine, so do not put his hand, so I'm somewhat out of touch with developments as Some terms used by those that modify cellular pleasure
each connecting my phone to KIES told me that there was an update, so I proceeded to update the firmware of my phone .. the KIES says pda service name: jh7/phone: jh7/csc: jf6 .. update but after about 1 hour and seeing no changes, stays KIES: updating firmware and my phone is in download mode but no progress bar ....
Well I finished turning off thinking that I was left without phone, as it is not in any way except a notice appeared: X. ..!... X (celular. ...!..... pc)
well then maybe restoring the firm to KIES but more of the same .... after 1 hour and nothing happens, no changes or my cel or the KIES so again to remove it ....
walk after looking, I found I could do the same but with ODIN3 .... I try, and I thought it had improved and that this time if I could take back to my cell, because in ODIN said he was in the process of SBL.BIN and download my phone appeared as a small front bar (which I indicated that a bar would be charged completely) but still after 1 hour, nothing happened so I disconnect ,.... ....
but something funny happened, now my screen when turned some codes appear red with a black screen, now if I think I will lose my galaxy s forever, but I managed and achievement do you enter download mode .... I do not notice appears where it appears the cell phone and the PC (X. ..!... X) but I take comfort that even I can get into download mode .... but to try for the 2nd time after 20 minutes, I appeared orange screen, as he had read somewhere that it was gray but scare me very much and lit it off hours later and I can still enter download mode but now my questions are:
what else I need for my phone is restored? and I have the drivers for my galaxy to win 7 of 64 bits! ODIN gets stuck in SBL.BIN .... I have that file? I have it wrong? or because there is not progressing? what else I need to restore?
over there told me that if he had made the repartition, the pit, or to make him a factory wipe but I guess that the phone is still working, but did not do anything about it, because I knew nothing about it KIES that the pedal and I did not just going to upgrade my phone, we did not think that some "routine" became so dangerous and so frustrating
I have only the root, since the cell phone so I sold it, at another, I can only enter download mode and the recovery I need the center button and then the captivate you do not have XD
I hope and I can help ......

fix the captivate stuck with phone--!---comp. icon
Default get the samsung captivate back to download mode
I have similar problem like that. When i use Odin3 one click flash the ROM. It stuck in the middle of flash. I take off the usb cable out ,try to reboot the phone. Oop .. the screen show the sign of the phone--- yellow triangle with exclamation sign in the middle---computer icon. Can do nothing with it, because the computer now can not connect with the phone.
In my case, I take the USB off the phone but still connect with the computer. Hold the volume button + power until the phone flash in black screen .This moment happen very quick ,it will go back to the unconnected sign again. When the screen turn black just release power button but still press volume button (otherwise it not working) hook the USB back in your phone right on that moment. The Phone go back to download mode. If not work try couple time ,important is timing right on the moment the flash to black screen .
Now ,you can use the odin3 flash the ROM again. It works for me ,and i try again same situation couple times. it really works.
hopefully, this will help for who got the same problem.
Moved to Q&A.

My Home Screen is locked as landscape

I really funny issue happened to me today.
Somehow my Home Screen is in landscape mode. I already did a Factory Reset and after the first boot, the home screen shows up as portrait (as it should be), but if I shutdown the phone and restart it, the Home Screen shows up again in landscape mode.
I already took the battery out for about 10 minutes, formatted the SD Card but the issue is still present, the closest fix is doing a Factory Reset, but once I reboot the phone, the Home Screen is set back as landscape.
My phone has the latest firmware version (I897UCJI6) and i'm using Froyo. My phone is unlocked but not rooted.
Of course, Auto Rotation is enabled but still the Home Screen stays as landscape. This never happened to me before, and I have been using the phone for about 2 months now.
Any idea of what could be??
PD: I've had a lot of issues with this phone: USB connectivity issues, MPT Application issues (filename bug) and now this.
Sorry I cant offer any help, but I too have had the same issues.
Using Cog 2.2beta3, no usb connectivity, screen works in portrait mode after a user data and cache clearing, but reverts to landscape with no help in a short time (or after reboot). Without USB connectivity, I have no way to use ODIN to revert back to an older rom or to revert to stock to check and see if that fixes it. With Cog 2.2beta3, I am stuck in 3e recovery and cannot flash any update.zips.
Just chiming in with some other info for someone else with the same issue. Thanks!
Im having the same issues as well... just happened to me today. I unlocked my phone and it was stuck in landscape mode. I have no usb connectivity, Im running cognition 2.2 from mid october. Is there anyway to fix this?
I don't know if this will definitely resolve it, but worth a shot.
on your phone, go to "settings" and then chose "display"... at the bottom there should be a "horizontal calibration" option. lay the device on a FLAT surface and press this and wait a few seconds until it completes. you should be back to normal after that.
Note: this option *only* exists in froyo releases, but it would be a good idea to be running "stock" JI6 to do this.

Help my phone keeps typing itself or touching itself through lockscreen?

Hi there,
I was wondering if my phone has virus because of my phone either typing itself or clicking on random apps causing the phone to glitch out. Is there a fix to this issue? For example i decided to plug in my charger and tries to access the lockscreen and decided to lock the screen out for 5 seconds.
Thanks Nandan
I'm having the same issue too. Mine always happens when it's charging. I had this problem all of the roms I've tried so far. I don't know what is the solution of it but if there's a fix, please let us know.

So with different roms..... So it survive if clean install roms. Have you both tried flash a ftf via flashtool/emma? Since flashing roms wont effect the bug, it has to be deeper in the system.

I've tried to flash with flashtool but never tried emma. Stock rom is in a better state, when the battery is charging it doesn't allow multiple touches. But when I'm on a different rom, it's randomly touching to the screen.
Can anyone find a fix for this bug? Otherwise I have to use the Xperia e3 instead. Can the developers do something about it on the custom rom or does this contain a virus?
I also faced that issue............
-When you hover your finger on the screen with automatic touch input.
What you need to do is:Go to Settings>Display> and uncheck Glove Mode
or flash to some other rom, see if that issue continues.
or it may be time to replace your touch as many a time due to pressure on screen would crack the touch which is invisible
i was cleaning my touch screen from inside due to some dust, with average pressure to whip display i cracked my touch.
since then i installed two cheap touch screen which where also malfunctioning and failed as i lost my temper.

buttons, lights and others

Hi,
I bought Droid Turbo month ago, I love this Phone but it has few problems. Firstly, the lighting of the reccent apps button is darker than the others, secondly sometimes the home and back buttons are not responsible (I read about this problem in others posts and I think I have this problem because of additional glass I have) and finally I have 6.0.1 with locked bootloader (I know, there is no option to unlock bootloader... Maybe someday somebody Will Find a solution. I Wonder if is it posibble to get lolipop with Verizon app to unbrickin phone, you know what I mean).
How to solve this first two problems? Is it cause by ROM, Android? I cant use guarantee for sth like that because it isnt a big problem and I dont live in USA and bought my phone far away from my country).
PS. Sorry for my English :/
Anybody know sth?

I own three of the Quarks (all of them the 64GB Moto XT1225, the "international" version of the Droid Turbo XT1254). All my capacitive buttons are the same brightness. Something is wrong with your third "recent apps" button.
Two of my phones are being used daily by myself and my wife, and have custom Marshmallow ROMs. The third is still "new" in the box and still has stock Kitkat with locked bootloader. The first two have always had the same buttons brightness, even before I installed custom ROMs. The one in the box I turned on when I got it, just to make sure it worked -- but I would have noticed if the capacitive buttons were wonky.
Also, all three phones have very responsive back buttons. Yes, your poor responsiveness is probably your screen protector interfering?
So, are you thinking my Phone is broken? It is not problem of androida somehow?
Well, on the left is my "new in box" never set up XT1225 with stock Kitkat, bootloader still locked (still has the factory screen protector). On the right is my wife's XT1225 with custom ROM RR 6.x. I'm taking the picture with my own XT1225.
See, the capacitive buttons? The brightness is fine and the same on all three buttons (home, back, recents), as wells as the responsiveness on both these phones and on the Moto XT1225 phone (my daily phone) I took the picture with.
So, something is wrong with your hardware, at least as far as brightness of the capacitive buttons. For the responsiveness, try taking off your screen protector.
I checked it, poor responsivnes is because of screen protection.
What if I told that I think all 3 buttons had the same brightness when I first started this phone? I disabled maybe 15 apps, is it possible that this made problem with brightness?

What kind of apps did you disable?
Yes, it's possible. I'm not going to say "probable", but "possible". Here's why...
This guy in this thread below has a rooted XT1225, but on stock ROM. He didn't like his capacitive buttons having any backlighting. So, he found a way to turn them off by editing something. Someone else in the thread said they use Gravity Box to do that. So, those values can be changed, either manually or by apps -- and perhaps changed disparately/unevenly?
Turn off button backlight in StockRom
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-maxx/help/off-button-backlight-stockrom-t3527679
I know you have a locked bootloader and are not rooted, but it's POSSIBLE some app that regulates auto-brightness or something also regulates the brightness (backlighting) of the capacitive buttons? Speaking of which, try turning on and off your autobrightness, see if that does anything.
If that doesn't work, you can always re-flash your Marshmallow firmware, and re-set everything back to "factory" settings. That may solve your problem.

Apps like verizon one, Amazon etc.
What do you mean reflash? By ADB? Not factory reset?

Yeah, by ADB or RSD Lite. If you do a factory reset, while that sounds good, I'm not sure it re-sets something like this. Whereas if you overwrite your values with the 6.0.1 factory firmware it will definitely re-set.
Then if you still have a problem, it's a hardware issue, not firmware or software.
You can try factory re-set first, but unless that fixes the problem then you are going to want to re-flash the 6.0.1 factory firmware just to make sure.
So, I think I flashed it well via RSD, phone automaticaly boot into my home screen (looks the same) and problem with this button is still there...
Am I done everything right?

When you flashed it, and it booted for the first time, did you have to enter everything again? Was it like getting a new phone? All your settings were wiped out?
No... It is weird for me. I think it would wipe everything but I have all the same what I have before

OK, then try factory re-set, then flash the image?
After that, I don't have any other ideas.
Ok, so I did it with adb also and it doesn't change anything, my recent apps button is still without lighting. I have to accept this little issue.
Thank you very much for your help
ps. maybe on other system someday it will work xd
Oh I remember the fact with my Nexus 4, one day the turn on/off button stop working, I was thinking about replacment of this button but with update on custom rom everything started to work fine, so I have still hope

Need help with some S8 Stock info

So my brother go some Black/Green screen on his S8 recently. He said it happened a week or so after a update he did on the phone. It's completely unusable. The only image on screen is either black, very dark (almost black) green, or when its booting sometimes it has black with green dots. Physically the device looks nearly perfect and he says it has no water damage. Upon searching the internet, other people have the same problem but theirs is usually fixed by restarting.
What I want to do is flash the stock Samsung stuff using Odin and see what happens. I am unable to get into recovery mode but I can get it into Download mode. Odin does detect it too. But the problem I am at is, I have no idea what version of bootloader or OS he has, since I don't follow the device at all. Anyone able to help me out with the version numbers so I can safely follow a guide that says like "only do on X bootloader/OS".

Just flash the latest. 5th digit from far end on firmware is a 1 through 6. 6 is pie. That's the best way to not have to download a bunch of them.
